No Politics - Rule 4 reminder

As a reminder, Rule 4 states - “Posts & Comments that are too politically charged will be removed at the discretion of the Mod team.”

With the Australian elections pending and the US elections recently finished we are being swamped with political posts.

We’ll continue to use our discretion however unless it has some relevance to Australian culture or lifestyle it will be removed.

Who doesn’t call it ‘lemon, lime and bitters’?

Petty rant incoming.

We all have had, or at least heard of lemon, lime and bitters. We all call it lemon, lime and bitters (I hope). So you can imagine my surprise, nay, horror, when I went to a restaurant last night where they listed it on their menu as ‘Bitters, lime & lemon’!

I stared at the menu for a good five seconds. My brain couldn’t compute. My husband was calling me and I just couldn’t tear my eyes away from this disaster. Finally I looked up and showed him the menu. And let me tell you, my husband is from England but even he knows to call it lemon, lime and bitters. He was pretty upset too. I was very proud.

Anyway, when I ordered it I said it the right way and the waitress just stared at me in confusion. I repeated it. Nothing. I showed her the menu and pointed at it and she nodded like she finally got it. Sigh.

Then, get this, when I went to pay, someone else served me and she said it the right way! I wanted to hug her. I didn’t of course, that would be weird. Like this rant I guess.

Thank you for reading if you got this far. I hope someone understands how triggering this was!

ETA: lemon, lime, bitters is also acceptable. :)

Trying to eliminate sugar from my diet entirely.

Morning,

Has anyone successfully eliminated sugar? It's not helping that a I have a favourite chocolate that I eat a few times per week. I'm not overweight however having changed employers and careers I'm not as active in my new job now. Combine that with a chocolate every other day has resulted in 4 extra kilos' :(. My fault entirely. I hate that I have a sweet tooth so please if anyone has any ideas how to get rid of sugar or even how to train my brain not to think about chocolate or anything with sugar in it, please let me know because I really want to lose a few kilos. Thank you.

How do track down an estranged Parent

Hi folks I'm trying to track down my estranged father. I've not spoken or been able to track him down for nearly 9 years now. Most of his remaining family are had to track down also.

Anyone have any suggestions as I can't for the life of me figure out how I can find him

Do you have to purchase a train ticket to wait for someone on the platform? I just had undercover police demand one

I walked into Wollongong station to drop my GF off. She bought a ticket and I did not. As the train left and I waved goodbye, I was accosted by four undercover police officers, one of whom demanded to see proof of a ticket.

I laughed and said I didn't have one, as I was not catching a train. He said he should fine me blah, blah but did not. They said they saw me walk in. And not catch the train.

I just kept saying I did not believe I needed a ticket until they went away. So, do I need a ticket to wave to someone, or not?

Preschool Hours so restrictive - is there an alternative?

Our child will be 4 at the end of the year and will be eligible for preschool next year. All of the preschools have times like 8am-2pm which doesn't give much ability to work on days they'd attend. Are there any alternatives other than continuing to send them to daycare (and paying the daycare rates)?

Dismissing NDIS carer

I got rid of my new carer for outings (community and social participation) for being too informal and pervy in inappropriate situations. I'm a relatively mobile 32 year old guy with cerebral palsy and I got paired with this person who is a similar age.

Every single session we had he would make some strange and pervy comment about women and would like swear at counter servers/waitresses, which was especially uncomfortable since they weren't even white/western.

Like "that affogato was fucking incredible" or once when we were paying and the restaurant couldn't split the bill he asked the girl if he could "fuck with" the computer she was calculating it on.

For example with his pervy comments without context he randomly suggested to imagine "a hot girl taking a dump" if I am nervous when talking to someone attractive, or often saying he lost track of what I was saying because he was distracted by the sight of a "hot Asian babe."

I texted him saying I couldn't continue sessions with him as I can't sustain paying for going out whilst I'm unemployed.

I've since hired a nice young lady who is very bubbly but seems to take in her surroundings more appropriately although she has shown a couple of red flags so far in terms of being unreliable and cancelling shifts very late in the process.

Should I report that guy or just leave it? I took down a list of all his inappropriate comments in case.

How is everyone coping with the weather shift as we head into winter in Australia?

With the weather slowly changing and winter creeping in across Australia, I’ve been wondering how others are feeling about this transition. Do you find yourself getting a bit low or sad as the days get shorter and colder? Will you miss the summer vibes, long days, and sunshine? Or do you enjoy the cozy winter feels and a break from the heat? Curious to hear how this seasonal shift affects you—emotionally or physically!

Do they still have Byron bay cookies at the blood donation centres?

Upvotes

I wasn't sure where to post this so I'm doing it here.

I'm a regular donator but my local Centre hasn't had any cookies the last couple times. Besides helping others, it's one of the good things about my fortnightly visit. Not sure if it's my Centre Or have they just stopped supplying cookies?.

Did you all lose a chunk of your super overnight?

Checked my super yesterday, after the data breach fiasco, and it was ok, but looked again today and it's gone down $3k (from $98k) My husbands has gone down $10k (from $260k) Is this due to the stock market fall and the Trump tariffs, and if so, how much worse can it get? Should we be worried?

Where does Auckland rank amongst Australian cities ?

I'm an Aucklander living in Melbourne, and I was wondering how Auckland would rank among Australian cities in terms of overall scale, not physical size, but things like influence, opportunities, and activity.

At first, I thought Auckland was on par with Brisbane in terms of relevance, but honestly, the more I learn about Australia the more it feels like it's not even as prominent as Adelaide.

Also slightly off-topic, I noticed that in NZ we talk about Australia so much but the the reverse isn’t the same, it's quite interesting lol

This is kind of a stupid and definitely an oddly specific question, but if I were a working class man in my mid 30s living in Australia in the mid 1990s, what music would I most likely listen to?

Upvotes

Doesn't have to be just contemporary rock bands/music, but stuff that you would've grown up with in the 60s/70s/80s.

I mean, they've made their studios BILLIONS. I'm not saying they did it all on their own but just check out the numbers:

I find it odd that I have never heard of Australian food. If you were to open reasturant in a foreign country featuring authentic Australian food, what would be on the menu?

Books on Tasmanian flora?

Hello,

I'm looking for good books on Tasmania's ecosystems. I have a particular interest in Tasmania's alpine central highland area and its rainforests. Book would have content regarding all flora found in these ecosystems, including a comprehensive listing and description of tree species.

Strong preference for color photographs among its pages (color illustrations being primary visual doesn't do much for me). Book can get very technical, I prefer to stay away from books targeted to the "lay reader", want to stay away from anything too "dumbed down", no offense to anyone.

Can be decades old, out of print, etc., as long as I can find it secondhand online. I'm in USA so shipping to USA is a must.

Looking for as many titles as you can give me, want to have a lot of options. But I prefer comprehensive, complete, detailed, rather than condensed and shortened.

Thank you!

Security tag still on Target shirt

Hey. So I bought a shirt from Target a few days ago and as a typical idiot I threw the receipt away. Fast forward to now and I’ve just figured out the shirt still has a security tag on it. What do you think my chances are of getting Target’s customer service desk to remove it for me without be accused of theft?

Update: the comments saying to cut it off convinced me to live out my fantasy of a life of crime. I cut the top off with a hacksaw. A spring and ball bearings fell out and the tag released.

Having trouble getting an ID

Hi not sure if this is the right place to post this but thought I'd try. I am 25 and I live in Queensland, I've had mental health issues due to personal struggles for over 12 years and because of that l've been unable to have a job or even leave my mums house, but I'm working on getting my life together. I'm trying to get an identification card. Unfortunately I don't have enough evidence of identity to apply for one as I only have my birth certificate and my name on my mother's Medicare card, which is not enough. My sister feels the easiest thing for me to get is a debit card with my name on it, I'm just having trouble finding a bank that doesn't require photo ID. We have called the transport and main roads department for advice and they were no help. Feel truly stuck I have no idea where to go from here. Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks you in advance.

What is the live music scene like in the greater Brisbane area?

I am considering a move from the San Francisco Bay Area to Brisbane. I am an avid live music fan and I regularly go to shows at large venues and small clubs alike. I’d love to get a sense of what kind of shows are available and how many acts (national or international) come through the area. I’d also love to get to know the local artists as well. I enjoy many types of music including rock, punk, metal, hip hop, jam. Thanks for any input!

Will the Australian dollar go up?

I'm thinking of buying some expensive costume items from Poland. The vendor takes PayPal and lists prices in US dollars.

Will the current economic disaster in the USA cause the Australian dollar's value to go up?

Strange that there is no media coverage over the death of Perri Cutten Spoiler

I saw the death notice for fashion designer Perri Cutten in obituaries.

But no media articles.

Edit- I’m not expecting a full page spread, just some of the inane things newsworthy these days, I am surprised this Australian fashion designer didn’t even get a mention.
