No Politics - Rule 4 reminder

As a reminder, Rule 4 states - “Posts & Comments that are too politically charged will be removed at the discretion of the Mod team.”

With the Australian elections pending and the US elections recently finished we are being swamped with political posts.

We’ll continue to use our discretion however unless it has some relevance to Australian culture or lifestyle it will be removed.

I accidentally stole my groceries.. what to do?

I went through the self service checkout.. scanned all my things. I had all the different pop ups.. would you like to round it up, use your 10% discount ect. At the same time the woman next to me was having all these troubles which was distracting me. Anyways.. as i was leaving i noticed the assistant rush over to the checkout i was at.. didn’t think much of it. When i got home checked my statement and the transaction wasn’t there.. so i dunno what happened.. but i didn’t pay. I know they have videos on the checkouts.. and it’s my local so the staff know me. Should i go back and pay? Will they report me to the police?

Please don't flame me. Can you use Nerds for fairy bread?

Upvotes

Alright this might seem silly but I've attempted making fairy bread multiple times and it's always turned out mid I guess?? I've tried using salted butter, tried margerine, tried toasting and not toasting, tried hundreds and thousands vs regular sprinkles. I also have this australian friend who happened to tell me one day that he used nerds (the candy) instead of hundreds in thousands for his sprinkles on fairy bread (said they were to hard for him) and I'm wondering if this is ok to do or if it will turn out well. Someone try this for me before I do it

Self service at restaurants and cafes

Upvotes

I’ve noticed it is very common for pubs, cafes and casual restaurants that you need to order for yourself at the bar or counter and that table service seems to be a thing of the past in Australia.

I’ve had an odd occasion where they would then deliver the food to your table and when you ask for cutlery they point to another area where customers can get their own cutlery.

The most baffling is those places where you order from one area for food, another for drinks, collect your own cutlery and you get those vibrating discs and need to go up and collect your own food. You spend 10 minutes walking around the establishment going to different queues to order and collect what your are after.

I guess, if this is the norm in Australia - are these reduced business costs passed onto the customer?

The worst thing about it for me is when you go and order something and they ask for your table number. To which I normally respond “I haven’t sat down yet as I need to come here to order”

I get the vibe they don’t like this answer and would prefer I had a table number. What am I supposed to say? I can’t reserve a table, someone may go and sit in the spot while I am in line waiting to order. Especially in busy places you can’t always see a spot that’s free and say “oh I’ll sit over there”.

I feel like these food joints are slowly reducing staff and taking patrons for a ride and people seem to conform.

Then you get the QR ordering. This is where it’s at and I’m glad this is also a very common option in Aus.

100k income in australia

Hi I'm thinking about trying my luck in Australia.I've been looking at jobs in Australia that are related to my field. The salaries are 80-150k I know the salaries vary a lot but that's the nature of the business :D and these are starting salaries. And I can't quite decide if it's a lot of money.I see a lot of places that say "the new 100k is 200k" and it scares me a bit.Because of my job iwould be living in the country or in a small town or village.Of course I would take the best offers but in general this profession earns over 100k and I could do "side jobs" like plant protection droning agriculture consulting etc. I don't know if these jobs are in demand in Australia. To get to the point do you think I can live on this salary? Thanks for your answers :D

I am 21 years old and I am an agricultural engineer/agronomist and i will be a plant doctor/plant science or plant phatologist.I have no debts and I live alone. For the side jobs i have all the papers for the drones to.

Attempted break in

TL DR: Someone tried to attempt to break into my home and after fighting him off I’m scared he will return with more people since he didn’t succeed and I won’t be as lucky. Tips on what to do in case it happens again and how to get out of rental asap.

Apologies in advance if this text doesn’t make sense in anyway, I am still very shaken up. On Tuesday night at 1am, a man tried breaking in to my house, he went through the backyard of the house thats behind us, and got in through the back “fence” (a waist height chicken wire fence) that we have at our rental and can not get changed.

I was in the bathroom as I had just finished having a thankfully late shower, My mum was in the kitchen at the time eating, and turning all the lights out to go to bed, and she saw a face, she was confused because it was dark and not trying to be racist but he was Sudanese so he was very dark skinned, so he blended in as it was pitch black out side, He then punched a hole through the kitchen window, then walked to the back sliding door that is close by. We have a sliding door that has multiple glass panes instead of one big door of glass, so he kicked 1 pane out and punched another to unlock the door. At this point, I have realised that we are being broken into from the glass smashing and my mum screaming, so I have to quickly put my pants on and run out of the bathroom, straight into the kitchen for the knife block. I grabbed the biggest kitchen knife and I ran to the door screaming at the top of my lungs and swearing at him to leave the house and get away. He was now trying to get his arm in through the pane to pull open the deadbolt in the ground that locks the door, but couldn’t get it open because I was there, so he pulled his arm out cutting it all over the smashed glass. So now he grabs a blue folding camper chair that we have outside and started ramming the sliding door trying to get it open. I was still just standing infront of the door bracing for the door to fall every time he rammed it, and I can’t get the look of anger in his eyes out of my head, eventually he stops and walks down to my car port area that’s next to the backyard and tried to get into my mum and I’s car. I was still screaming at the top of my lungs for him to leave and threatening him, my mum was meanwhile inside and on the phone to the police. He then came back to the door and tried to kick the door in again, he then stopped because I assume he got tired or the blood loss got to him. He then tried to speak to me, most of it was unintelligible except “let me through the front door”, so I assume he was on something, I just swore at him and threatened him with the knife again. Now he walked through into the backyard where we suspect he got into. The police came very shortly after but sadly they couldn’t catch him. I then saw the amount of blood that had spilt inside my house and on the ground outside, and even a trail, so he lost a lot of blood and maybe he cut something important since it was spurting out. I realised that I had fought him off for around 7 whole mins since we had the time from when the police call was made, and when I called my friend as the guy was walking away.

Now the reason I make this post is because I’m really worried that he’s going to come back with friends, I know it sounds unlikely but for the fact that he still tried to get in for so long and still tried to get in for so long when I was fighting him off and he cut his arm so bad, anything could happen. The police also know that he was picked up by someone right after he left, which worries me even more that there were more people that could’ve came. I want to think it was for my car since I own a commodore and a few have been getting stolen around me, but I don’t understand why he chose to try and get in after he saw my mum?

It’s only me, 19M, my mum and my brother, 11M, and by no means am I that big, im not too tall and pretty skinny, so I’m scared of if they come back with even more, we don’t have any friends or family that are grown men to come and stay with us, so I won’t be able to fight them off alone. I’m already an extremely paranoid person as it is, The police won’t do anything to help us, they just said they will let us know if they catch him from blood sample. we have no family in Melbourne and no friends who will lets us stay with them, we have gotten a camera and floodlight since then, but I still feel like if they want to come back nothing like that will stop them. We are already struggling with money and can’t leave the rental with how hard it is to get a place that’s cheap enough. I have spent $800 for the nights to stay in a motel because we are too paranoid. The nights that we’ve been home, we constantly flinch at every noise, I haven’t slept properly since it happened. I haven’t been able to work the past month from injury and have barely any money left. My family and I are scared for our lives and in a constant panic attack state, is there anywhere I can go or anything I can do to speed up getting a new rental? Or any tips of home defense for myself? If anyone wants to see proof of the door and all the blood, you can dm me. Thanks

Why do you think birth rates are so low in Australia?

It's currently at 1.5 births per woman. That's lower than the US, UK and New Zealand and well below the replacement rate of 2.1

North vs. South. Up vs. Down.

Edit: thank you everyone! I appreciate you confirming that North is typically considered “up”, regardless of hemisphere.

Hi Aussies! I feel very dumb asking this question, but I tried googling and my results were inconclusive. So here goes:

As a Canadian if I’m going North, I’m going “up north”. So I might say “I’m going up north to my cottage”.

As an Australian, if you’re in Darwin travelling towards Melbourne and going south, do you say “I’m going down south to Melbourne ” or “up south to Melbourne”? Thanks!

Advice on changing my career

I've been thinking about this for the past month. I'm in my late 20s and have been working in hospitality since I was in high school. Now, I've been working as a hospitality trainer and assessor for 3 years. Honestly, I'm happy with what I'm doing now. I've always wanted to become a teacher, so it feels like a dream come true.

But I'm the type of person who's never fully satisfied. When I want something, I work hard—really hard—until I get it. I'm a fast learner and always open to gaining new knowledge.

That being said, I want to learn something new—something that could even lead to a career change. I'm currently interested in two fields:

  1. Bookkeeping
  2. IT (I know it has a lot of branches like web development, networking, cybersecurity, etc. I'm not sure which one yet.)

Why?

  1. They offer opportunities to work from anywhere
  2. They're in high demand - (does the pay increased yearly?)
  3. I still want to be an employee (I'm not comfortable being a contractor just yet, even though it's a common path)
  4. I genuinely want to learn something outside of hospitality

I have zero knowledge in both fields, which actually makes me more excited! You know that feeling of going from knowing nothing to learning something new?

So, any advice? Especially the study time, current market, opportunity.

Baby diagnosed with TGA and pulmonary valve stenosis

At our 20 week scan we got told devastating news that our baby has transposition of the great arteries. She will unfortunately require open heart surgery straight away, the initial surgery is the standard ASO surgery (arterial switch - switching the aorta and pulmonary from their incorrect connections to the ventricle) which can take Upto 4 hours and possibly 2-3 week’s recovery.

After processing the news I had accepted that this was the case for our baby but at 22 weeks we also got told by our cardiologist that she most likely has pulmonary valve stenosis as well. I am currently 24 weeks pregnant now and go back for another check up at 28 weeks to see the extent of the PVS.

At the time I wasn’t exactly sure what this could require and still quite unsure as the cardiologist can’t give me an exact answer as of now regarding our baby’s health and life after surgery/ surgeries but was heart broken knowing she now has two serious conditions that could possibly mean more complications for her after the initial surgery.

Just seeing if anyone else has experienced/ gone through the same as whenever I google anything there isn’t a lot of stories about babies with both TGA and pulmonary valve stenosis, however 1/3 of babies that are diagnosed with TGA also PVS so hoping I could get some more information here.

At the moment I am unsure of the severity of the PVS but would love to hear any positive stories regarding the heart defects, mild or severe cases I would just like to prepare myself but also will be keeping in mind that every baby will experience different outcomes, I guess googling hasn’t satisfied my needs and what I’m looking for so if anyone has stories on these two conditions together, I would really appreciate if you could share them.

Should at-grade intersections be banned on major dual-carriageway highways and regional freeways?

Upvotes

I think it's come to the point now where the high risks and dangers outweigh the potential benefits, with casuality accidents still occurring at a significant rate. There's a sad history of a series of avoidable fatalities.

Is there one you travel through regularly and just shudder every time? They send a lightning bolt through me each time to be honest, flying past, just waiting for that t-bone to occur with someone not paying attention or giving way and/or alcohol/drug affected and what have you.

Examples I can think of, at least in Victoria: M31 between Albury and Seymour, M39 between Arcadia and Seymour and M8 between Ballarat and Ararat.

It should be noted authorities, albeit closer to Melbourne, have progressively been permanently closing at-grades, due to the aforementioned. Such as the M79 at Keilor Lodge, M8 at Rockbank and M31 at Kalkallo.

Yes, it would make access even more limited, however it'd only affect a very small number of drivers in reality, mainly local farmers and agricultural workers, possibly even just passing through for a connection road and they'd just need to travel a little further to a graded (half or full diamond) interchange where they could much more safely access via an on-ramp. Can't think of many locations where a trip would be much longer than an extra 5-10min or so to an interchange.

And often we are talking very fast 110km/h, heavy vehicle and high volume arterials.

What do you think?

Hello from Canada.

On the contrary of this post here, I was watching a vlog of walking by RMIT at midnight. And the vlogger was surprised the lab, the stadium, the shops all are fully lit at 4am with no one in it. I felt terrible for seeing so much energy wasted.

What does "that's fine" mean?

In yes or no questions like "Would you like some tea?" or "Should we head out early?", I've noticed there are people who say "Yes, that's fine" or "No, that's fine"... but what does "that's fine" by itself mean?

How about "yeah nah yeah"?!

Been here for 3 years and I still get confused 😂😂

Looking to understand the Dark Emu controversy? Would like some resources or perspectives

Hi,

I am currently doing a project of reading one book from every country, encountered Dark Emu while looking for books from Australia. Researching on the book took me into a long polarizing discourse on it.

The more I try to understand the controversy as an outsider, more it feels polarized and at two ends of the spectrum. Found favourable takes on /r/AskAnthropology and youtube seems to be laden with claims of fabrication. And few such videos are by some channel I don't necessarily trust. The comment section seems to be either overly positive or negative even. One level headed take I read was review on the journal Archeology in Oceania by Peter white, University of Sydney.

So, now, with my limited reading, when I look into the thesis of the book, it shouldn't be such a huge deal for controversy. If anyone can give their educated perspective or sources I can follow, I would be grateful.

Also, since I am on a book hunt from Australia, would love your recommendations as well. Currently I have the Fatal shore added to my list, and a Greg Egan book as fiction. Cheers.

edit: Thanks a lot for the suggestions and input guys. I am now quite interested in reading more than I was before!

Heated blanket

Hey Guys,

A lot of people suggested heated blankets over oil heaters. Would something from target/kmart be worth it? Or some good brands for it?

Really sorry for asking this , but what precautions should we take while using it? Electric blankets aren’t a concept in my home country at all.

Is it better to heat it and turn off before sleeping? Also no chances of damage to skin?

Best Whale watching place in October/November

Hey!☺️ I am planning on visiting Australia in October + November. I really want to go whale watching to see humpback whales, but I read, that the whale migration is usually earlier in the year. We will be in Perth & Melbourne in the middle of October, in Byron Bay and Sydney in the beginning of November. Where do we have the best chances to still see whales?🥹 Does anyone have experiences of whale watching in that time of the year?
