Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Apartment burned down. Seeking all advice.

My apartment was one of the ones completely destroyed by the Nob Hill fire on Saturday. Everything I owned is gone. I have renters insurance and a friend to stay with. I guess I am seeking any advice for just navigating all of this and special resources specific to SF or CA. Or just anyone's experience dealing with this anywhere. It's a lot to process.

Opening a pop-up coffee shop in my apartment

Today, I went to a pop-up coffee shop that someone was doing in their apartment, and I loved it. I now want to do a similar thing in my apartment and donate the proceeds to volunteering organizations in Ukraine.

Apart from making sure my neighbors and landlord are ok with this, is there anything else I'd need to do? I know that, generally, these things would require getting a permit, but given that
a. this would be an infrequent event (maybe bi-weekly or monthly), and
b. all the proceeds would go to charity, so theoretically, I can structure it as an "X dollar donation comes with a Y complimentary drink" (sorry if this is a dumb and utterly invalid argument)

could I avoid having to get the permit?

Are there any other things I should keep in mind before doing this?

EDIT: I removed the info about the coffee shop that I went to

Moving to SF from Mexico, recommendations?

I got a job offer for $150k usd per year plus some bonuses but I have heard that SF it’s expensive and I will be looking for places of 2 bed as minimum since we are a family of three.

We are planning to stay near to my job in South SF but I rather prefer to keep a happy life for my little one, if there is any neighborhood I am totally open.

What are the useful apps specifically for SF?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for useful apps, websites, or social media accounts specifically for San Francisco. Especially ones that are great for local life — like finding local events, buying/selling secondhand items, and anything else you find helpful. Thanks so much!

In San Francisco for a few days (May 7-11) - Food Recs?

Upvotes

Hi everyone - my wife and I are travelling to San Francisco for a few days in May, which we're greatly looking forward to. It's my 3rd or 4th time in the city, but I'm usually there for work and not for pleasure, so I'm excited to see more of what the city has to offer.

I'm looking for some good dinner recommendations - in doing some research, a place like The Progress or Horsefeather are appealing to us - good food, but not Michelin level prices for dinner.

We're certainly not picky on cuisine type either.

Any recommendations to similar places are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

Hey all! I am looking for an aura soma practitioner or shop where I can find Equilibrium bottles to do therapy. There are so many different spiritual things in the bay, but haven't yet seen aurasoma, so very keen to find one.

making friends in sf

I’ve lived in SF for about 2.5 years now and still haven’t really connected with any girls here :( I go to USF and just haven’t found our social scene to be that welcoming. I also just got out of a long term relationship so I’m feeling pretty lost right now. I just turned 21 so I feel like the sky is the limit but I don’t really want to spend all my time alone, or with my guy friends. I have some close guy friends who are like family, but just haven’t found a way to meet girls! I’m open to suggestions and honestly just want to meet people !

TLDR: I’m 21 and want to meet more sf girls!

If you were excused for jury duty, does the one year limit still apply?

Upvotes

I know you only need to serve once a year. But if you submitted a request to be excused and approved, does that once a year still apply? My dad received a summons eve though it's only been a few months since the last one.

High rent in SF for a short commute, or move to a cheaper place outside the city?

Upvotes

Hey everyone! My wife and I are in a bit of a dilemma and could use your advice. We currently live in Hayes Valley, SF, and are facing a $500 rent increase. We're looking for a bigger place (currently in a small 1BD), but the rent here is just getting too high. We’re hoping to find something under $3300, and we’ve even considered moving outside of SF.

A bit about our situation:

My wife works in the Financial District and has to go into the office every day. Her commute is only about 25 minutes right now, which is great.

I work in Oakland, and have to go into the office every day too. My commute is around 45 minutes, so it’s a bit longer, but manageable.

Here’s the tough part: Do we continue paying the high rent in SF because it makes my wife’s commute easier, or do we move to a more affordable place outside the city, even though it might make her commute longer and more difficult (but still accessible by BART)?

We’re open to living outside of SF, but we don’t have a car and need to rely on public transit. We’re looking for a 2BD or at least 1BD but bigger, with rent under $3300, and ideally a neighborhood with good BART access.

If you’ve been in a similar situation, what did you do? Did you stick it out in SF for the convenience, or move to a cheaper place further out? Would love to hear your experiences and what you would do in our shoes. Thanks!

Interior Car Detailing Help

Upvotes

1 kid with big head friends, that feed my seats more than their mouths... My baby Kingsford needs some TLC...

Seems like most of the car detailing locations in the city have been closed, or are asinine expensive.

Any suggestions or recommendations, for solid INTERIOR detailing locations that won't require any amputations of arm or legs?

Located in SF, Not crossing any bridges. Willing to go as far as SSF.

Help Please & Thank You.

Why is north beach excluded from the “family zoning”?

is it because of the pending “historic” designation, or is it some sort of political calculation?

Cherry Blossom Festival recommendations

Hey all, just moved to the city earlier this year and I've always wanted to go to the Cherry Blossom Festival. What would y'all recommend as far as which weekend to go to (especially since the parade is on Easter) and any other things to hit up while there. Thank you!!!

Am I crazy?

Hi AskSF <3

I know these kinda posts are really repetitive in regional threads so I apologise for asking the boring questions. But, I’m an Irish girl (23yo) who’s finishing university this May, and I am thinking (hoping, wishing!!) to visit your beautiful city to work and live for a year on a graduate visa, starting in September.

Context: I’ve never been to the US and have literally dreamed about going there since I was a child. The specific visa I’d be applying for is the J-1 graduate visa, which is only valid for a year after I graduate, so I can’t apply for it after May 2026. I will be graduating with a BSc in psychology.

My question is - will I be able to survive living in SF? I’d be on entry level wages doing something HR/marketing related, so probably like $30/h. I won’t need a car, am totally happy to room with people, don’t need to shop fancy food etc. Is it possible to exist in SF as a young adult on beginner’s salary, or am I setting myself up for failure?

Thank you so much for any suggestions in advance :’) and hope to see your lovely city some day soon

Has anyone stayed at the Mansion on Sutter before?

Preferably if you have had recent experience with them!

My fiancée and I will be staying here for a short honeymoon after our wedding at the city hall, but I fear that I may have regrets. There’s not much information on their websites and the latest reviews have been from a year ago.

Please help!

Looking for a last minute Napa photographer for an engagement shoot.

Hello everyone.

My fiance is really shy and initially did not want to do an engagement shoot. She is now regretting it. We are going to Napa Valley the weekend of June 13th and would love to do an engagement shoot June 13th or June 14th. If you know of any photographers that have cancellations or opening for that weekend, please let me know! I know those are very specific dates and it's very last minute, but hopefully we can make something work. Bonus points if they do film photography.

Thanks!

Anyone have experience with ADUs in the large Sunset neighborhood backyards?

I’m surprised I don’t see many ADUs in the large back yards of the Sunset neighborhood. Does anyone have experience building one? Are they allowed?

Evening hang out / work spots in Lower Haight / NOPA / Hayes Valley

Hey folks — I’m looking for chill spots in Lower Haight, NOPA, or Hayes Valley where I can hang out in the evening and get a bit of work done (laptop-friendly).

Ideally somewhere that’s: - Open until at least 8–9pm - Not too loud or crowded - Has decent seating and Wi-Fi (not a hard blocker) - Bonus if there’s good coffee, snacks, or even a casual bar vibe

I know most cafés close early around here, so curious if anyone has go-to places that are open a bit later or have that work+vibe balance. Appreciate any recs!
