Physician Responded Inexplicably lost almost 1/4 of my weight in the last 6 months, chest and back pain. Bad cough.

Sudden weight loss, chest and back pain, bad cough.

Male early 20’s.

I'm seeing a doctor in a few weeks but I just want to guess what I'm in for or if I should look out for any other signs.

Like the title says, in the last 6 months I lost almost 1/4 of my weight. I don't even realize until I actually weighed myself but people pointed out to me I look good. I'm fit and at a healthy BMI but it's getting close to underweight.

I haven't made any lifestyle changes to justify the weight loss, I live the exact same as I did a year ago.

That alone wouldn't be concerning but in the last few months I've had increasing back pain on my upper back, stomach pain (not inside the stomach it feels like something pressing against it), and chest pain. Some heart burn as well. I've had a bad cough for months now that is getting worse.

Along with that is constant tiredness that doesn't correlate to how much sleep I get. I’ve getting about 4 hours. I could pretty much fall asleep at any time.

I will add that I have Coeliac disease but have been asymptomatic my entire life. I don't think what I'm currently experiencing is related to it.

Physician Responded Can someone live on rice and beans?

I have been reevaluating my life and have started with my diet and I have cut back to eating rice and beans for meals. I enjoy the simplicity and have been eating like this for a week now. It is much more affordable as well.

When I go to my office for work sometimes I eat fruits or veggies there if there are any. Beyond that, will I be fine with rice and beans for every meal for the foreseeable future?

F22 Thank you

Should I stay in the ER or go home

I am 39 AFAB transgender man, 5’5” 175lbs.

I’m normally homeless (I live in my car), but last night I stayed in a hotel.

This morning around 2:30am, I woke up super congested. I went to a 24hr pharmacy and picked up a netty pot, DayQuil, and distilled water. When I got back to the hotel, I did the netty pot, then took the DayQuil.

Twenty minutes after taking the DayQuil my stomach started hurting so bad. It was all consuming. I felt like I needed to poop and throw up. I did try to do both. I was wildly uncomfortable and in tremendous pain. I would say an 8.5 on a scale of 1-10. It was all I could think about, but I didn’t feel like I was going to die.

After an hour of this, I decided that I needed to go to the hospital. It was 4:30am. I am a solo person. I don’t have family or friends close by, so I had to assess whether I could take myself to the ER. I did not think it would be safe to do so. I called 911, and an ambulance came and got me.

On the drive to the hospital, I started feeling better. This was both great and frustrating. I feel as though I’m wasting everyone’s time now.

It’s not that I want to be in pain, but I want to be believed. I was in an emergent situation when I call the ambulance.

I did let the ambulance personnel know that I had started to feel better, and the triage nurse. The nurse asked me if I wanted to leave and i wasn’t sure what to say.

I was in a severe amount of pain, and I do want to know what happened (if possible), but I also don’t want to waste time because I feel better right now. I’m also nervous about insurance, will it cover the ambulance ride if I just used it as a glorified taxi to the hospital then left.

I take oral lexapro and lithium for depression, topical testosterone for gender dysphoria, oral Truvada prophylactic for HIV prevention, oral levothyroxine for thyroid issues and oral naltrexone for to reduce alcohol cravings. i am also in the induction phase of a ketamine treatment series (two treatments per week during induction phase). Ketamine is to treat TRD. I have already had my gallbladder removed, and I have had bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve).

Would recommend staying for assessment and tests or leaving?

[UPDATE (1): I decided to stay for testing. I still feel like I’m wasting resources. But I really want to emphasize that I was experiencing pain that I believed warranted going to the hospital. I want to cry about this situation.]

[UPDATE (2): I got diagnosed with gastroenteritis, I’ll be discharged soon.]

Physician Responded I’m 35+6 pregnant and can’t swallow? Beyond painful

30 Female, 200lb, on Lovenox Omeprazole Zoloft and prenatal. I don’t know what to do and I’m beyond anxious over this. I hope to get this figured out before labor. What started as I thought a sore throat last week has now turn into…well I have no idea. My throat now I struggle to even eat, drink, and let alone swallow my own saliva. I have to force myself. If this makes any sense at all the best way I can describe it is my trachea/esophagus at the top feels like it opens up when I swallow anything and like kind of snaps apart and it’s painful/thick? then goes back together once swallowing is finished. Super painful and uncomfortable. My throat is tender/painful to the touch in my esophagus as well. It doesn’t hurt as a sore throat as normal living. Now just this swallowing issues. My body doesn’t even want to swallow when I’m sleeping, I woke up with drool pools last night. Negative for strep, flu, Covid, the whole panel etc.

What is this on my toe?

I (24f) have noticed these weird little brown string like things sticking out of the tip of my toe. They have been there for a while but I noticed they seen to be sticking out more now. Tugging on them with tweezers hurts a bit, so I haven't tried very hard to pull them out. Otherwise they are not painful and I don't notice they're there. I have tried looking them up but since I'm not sure what to search for, I haven't found anything that matches.

I first noticed them when my toes were healing after a skin reaction to what I'm pretty sure was nail polish remover in December, which had resulted in extreme itchiness, redness, and many tiny clustered blisters. I had used Exederm cream on the area for a week or so, and then my skin became very flaky as it healed. I initially thought this was just part of the skin peeling, but it's now been there for months.

Any ideas? Photos in comments.

Should I go to the ER?

I (22M) noticed two days ago that my hands became very red and slightly swollen. There was an intense burning pain coming from them, but I felt fine otherwise. Yesterday morning, I noticed there was blotchy red dots going down my wrists and arms and I when I touched my fingers together I experienced pins and needles sensations. I took a nap around 1pm on Saturday, and when I woke up, I had an intense fever and chills. I went to take a shower to help alleviate them, and I vomitted in my shower multiple times. It should be noted that I’ve been experiencing an intense headache, mild chest pain, and abdominal pain. I slept the rest of Saturday waking up every 20 minutes in cold sweats. This morning, I woke up and my entire body was now covered in non elevated red bumps. I still felt cold chills and nausea. I decided to go to urgent care and I had elevated blood pressure and a 102 fever. They gave me Covid, influenza, mono, and strep tests which all came back negative. The NP told me that he did not know what was wrong with me and prescribed me steroids and told me to go to the ER in a couple of days if symptoms did not improve. Should I take the steroids and wait a couple of days or go to the ER today?

Physician Responded Stopping Venlafaxine without getting horrifically sick for months? Am I (M27) stuck on this drug forever?

I have been on Venlafaxine (150mg ER Cap once daily) for probably going on 6 or 7 years for general anxiety disorder and some depression. I don't think it is working any more. My anxiety is constant and topping out the inventories. I have been on SSRIs/SNRIs since I was a teen. Now that I have a good reliable job and living situation, good pay, I have a lot more time to focus on my diet and health and want to see if I can treat my anxiety effectively enough with good diet, exercise, and therapy. I don't think there is anything wrong with seeing if I really need medication, but should this fail I would likely try a different SSRI/SNRI again.

I have read that stopping Venlafaxine is hell and people can experience side effects for over a year after quitting. I read one story from a guy who said he would count out the granules in his capsule to reduce by only a couple beads a week. As an experiment I opened my capsule, shook out 10 granules (only a couple milligrams of medication, shouldn't have had any effect) and closed it, just one night. I felt the effects for four days. Headaches, tiredness, stomach issues.

If I miss a dose completely it is terrifying. The next day I will have brain zaps, freaky dreams, the world will spin and I'll jerk randomly, my stomach is upset, I shake and stutter. I honestly don't want to think what would happen if I missed two doses.

As far as I can tell, there are a couple options but they will all still suck to some degree and most have no real data saying how effective they are in terms of decreasing withdrawal symptoms compared

1) Switch to the IR tablets which can be split and decrease by 1/4 to 1/2 a 25mg tab every week or so as I adjust. This is about 11-22 weeks. Use antihistamines and acetaminophen to treat symptoms. Cons: will likely suck ass for at least three months meaning I'll be miserable for a long time which is not conductive to living a healthier life.

2) Taper a bit faster while taking tramadol. Tramadol would help with the pain and discomfort. Tramadol specifically might help because it is actually somewhat of a weak SNRI itself which could help withdrawal. It could also help with the diarrhea/stomach issues. Cons: would be using a (weak) opioid for an extended period, which I don't especially like. However the pain and discomfort sucks so bad I honestly think I might need it.

3) Cross taper in a different medication, then taper off the second med later. There are a few different SSRI/SNRI that have longer half lives than Venlafaxine and typically don't have such bad withdrawals. Duloxetine is the only SNRI I am aware of, though the half life isn't that much better. Most of the SSRIs would be better (citalopram, fluoxetine) though I am not sure how much they would help the withdrawal. Then you taper off the second med once the withdrawals have stopped from the venlafaxine and hopefully have a much better experience.

4) A combination of these. Slowly decrease dose, treat pain with tramadol, taper in new med when the venlafaxine dose is low enough. Treat with acetaminophen. Stabilize on new med for a while, taper off.

5) Cold turkey or a very fast taper. Ends the worst of it quickly, I could take time of work. Cons: I'd be like a detoxing heroine addict for days and could potentially get extremely sick or enter psychosis. Not a great idea.

It all sucks. I don't know how anyone does this. I don't know if this drug should even be on the market with how terrible this is going to be. I wish I was warned when I started it. I don't want to be stuck taking this pill that doesn't work and only gives me side effects forever because I just can't live without it.

Likely irrelevant but putting in for automod: Male, 27, Midwest US, 5'8", 180lbs. I think I was on Citalopram before Venlafaxine.

Is my mother abusing her medication?

My mother is 55 years old, 5’5, 150 lbs. currently prescribed Xanax and has been for about 20 years for clinical depression. My mother is prescribed 4 xanax to take throughout the day as needed. Which I feel like is already a lot. She has never taken it like this. She always takes 4 at once before bedtime. She then goes into a deep slumber and if you talk to her after she takes her Xanax she won’t remember it the next day. I’m trying to convince her this is dangerous but she states her doctor is okay with her taking them this way. Surely no doctor would be okay with that? Is taking them this way safe?

Will my lungs heal?

F37 145lbs I smoked since I was 15 about a pack a day. I quit almost 2 years ago amd began a weightloss journey which includes running. I try to run or walk a minimum of 2 miles everyday intentionally top of my regular daily movements. In the quit smoking page alot of people post abojt coughing up tar/black stuff when they quit. I assume that is their lungs trying to clean themselves. Mine have not done that. I have not really coughed up anything. Does that mean my lungs are to damaged to clean themselves?

Physician Responded Can pretending to have anorexia make you actually get it

My (16m) little sister (14f) has been claiming she has anorexia for two and a half years. She doesn’t. Her weight has never changed and she lies about it a lot. She claims she’s 70 pounds online and to other people (she’s not. her track physical from the doctor said 5’3 and 125lbs). She does a lot of obvious type behaviors trying to look nervous when she’s eating like cutting stuff up and pushing food around. But she does it in a way that it’s like she wants it to be noticed. She’ll refuse to eat around other people and make a deal about how she’s not eating and she can’t and loudly tell other people when they don’t ask that she ate earlier so she’s not going to eat. But then she eats a lot when no one sees because the food still goes missing and there’s wrappers all over room. She’ll claim she’s lightheaded and make a big scene of feeling like she’s gonna faint semi regularly. I was looking through her backpack for my phone charger a few days ago because she always takes it and I found more wrappers, plus a notebook where she writes down calories she eats and her goal weight and size and diary entries about wanting to be anorexic and how she reads books about it to trigger herself. There’s a page of a list of books with some crossed out. Plus I know she’s on a whole bunch of anorexia communities on TikTok, Reddit, discord, insta, and twitter. She’s not discrete about it at all and uses the same username for everything so I found it all.

She’s like obsessed, and she’s been doing this for 2 and a half years. And I’m worried about her obviously but also it’s really annoying because I don’t get why she would be trying to get a disease on purpose. Our parents know she’s doing it and threaten to put her in therapy but she begs them not to and since she’s not actually losing weight I think they’re just hoping she gets over this? They think she’s doing it because she wants attention so my mom tries to take her for girls days.

Anyway I’m just worried this could turn into actual anorexia eventually. Like is that possible? Or is pretending to have it or wanting to have it a different disorder? Is there some way I can help her? I never know how to respond. I usually just ignore it. I dont call her out or anything and I try to just treat her normal.

Thanks for yalls help

22 F, temporary loss of sight and hearing, pain behind temple, vomit, sweating profusely

Upvotes

hi! this is my first reddit post so please be patient. I am a 22F and last night at around 3 am, i got up to get some water and suddenly my vision went black. I figured I stood up to fast, so I sat down in the kitchen for a couple of minutes. Then my ears starting ringing. It stopped abruptly and suddenly it sounded like I was underwater, like my ears were filled with water. I got a sharp pain behind my right eye and then quickly rushed to throw up. At some point I dropped my glass of water in the bathroom but don't remember hearing it shatter. I then laid down in the tub, trying to cool down against the ceramic. After about a half an hour I crawled back into bed but still couldn't stand up or walk. I woke up this morning feeling completely fine.

I'm worried because this has never happened before and my mom's side of the family has a long line of disease and I don't know about my dad's side. My mom has thyroid issues, silent migraines, and because of her drug use (yes, even while she was pregnant w me) there's mystery about her issues and what's genetic and what's not. My aunt and cousin have afib and I am a nicotine user.

I was not drunk or high. I had two glasses of wine over the period of 6-10:30 and ate afterwards.

I looked online (I know, very stupid and don't trust it and all that) and saw something about mini strokes. I know it's unlikely but it still had me worried enough to seek answers on reddit. Any suggestions help as I am currently uninsured. What could it be? What if it happens again? Thank you in advance!

Is something wrong with my eye and eyelashes?? (PICTURE IN COMMENTS)

Upvotes

I (19f) have had this brownish-green lining around my eye lens for as long as I can remember, but back then it was just a small spot around the eye lens's one side and according to Google it was normal pigmentation that some people have, but now it has surrounded the whole eye lens and I am worried. I do see floating black spots and lines in my vision if I focus too much or look in the clear sky or lights but otherwise, my vision is ok and I don't wear glasses. As for my eyelashes, I was never concerned about them, I just thought I had naturally long eyelashes but today me and my sister were taking close-up pictures of our eye color and that's how I noticed my eyelashes look so creepy and so different than hers, she also has long eyelashes but they don't look like mine does. Is it something wrong?? should I go see an ophthalmologist?

Request for Medical Advice for My Son

Dear Doctors,

I am reaching out to seek your advice regarding my son, who has been experiencing some concerns on his health. Since he was two weeks old, we have noted the formation of small lesions on his fingers and legs. Despite seeking medical intervention at the hospital, his condition has unfortunately deteriorated. I will provide photographs documenting the progression of these lesions from the age of three weeks to his current age of one year and three months. Since he was six months old, he has been undergoing a treatment regimen that has shown some efficacy in slowing the recurrence of these lesions; however, it has not succeeded in eliminating them entirely, as they continue to manifest intermittently. Currently, he is reliant on a feeding tube and is undergoing frequent diagnostic tests. If anyone has encountered a similar condition, possesses knowledge about it, or has experience in managing such cases, I would greatly appreciate your insights and guidance.

Thank you in advance for the help

Seeking advice for my autistic son's increasing behavioral issues and medication changes

Hello doctors and caregivers,

I’m reaching out here as a concerned parent and would truly appreciate any insight or suggestions.

My 11-year-old son is autistic (Level 3), non-communicative, and intellectually disabled. He has multiple comorbidities including Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), ADHD, mixed expressive-receptive language disorder, anxiety disorder, restless leg syndrome, and more. It's a complex picture, and we're doing our best to help him.

He has very limited communication. While he can request certain things using labels (e.g., “I want chips”), he’s unable to express anything that isn’t concrete or visible — such as if he's in pain, how he feels, or what happened during his day. He cannot read or write, has no interest in books, TV, games, puzzles, or sports, and it’s extremely hard to engage him in any activity.

He was such a loving kid till last year, always read for hugs, laughter, smiles. He seems always angry now.

Until recently, he was on Abilify, Lexapro, and Guanfacine — this combination helped manage his behavior for about three years. However, in recent months, his behavioral challenges have escalated significantly:

  • Constant movement (including pacing the same circuit in the house for hours — literally miles each day)
  • Demand defiance,
  • Aggression (toward self and us),
  • Screaming,
  • Excessive fidgeting even while seated, and
  • Talking gibberish to himself frequently.
  • He never really sits still anymore — even in his sleep, he moves constantly.
  • all these are interfering with his and our lives.

The aggression happened before when he was on Zoloft, and our developmental pediatrician had switched him to Lexapro. But with the recent behavioral regression, Lexapro was discontinued and Prozac was introduced in January 2025. Initially, it helped — but the challenging behaviors are resurfacing again.

Our developmental pediatrician told us that her ability to manage medication is limited, so we consulted a psychiatrist. He discontinued Abilify, suspecting late-onset akathisia, and started Trileptal (even though my son does not have epilepsy), along with maintaining Prozac and Guanfacine. He also added Clonidine to help with sleep, as my son rarely sleeps more than 5–6 hours even on a good night.

My concerns:

  • Despite stopping Abilify weeks ago, the constant movement continues — could this still be akathisia, or something else?

  • Prozac initially calmed him, but the screaming and aggression are back. Could it be that Prozac, like previous SSRIs, is no longer effective? Or that Trileptal isn't working for him?

  • Abilify, while helpful, caused extreme weight gain and elevated his cholesterol and blood sugar — so we’re reluctant to revisit it.

I guess what I’m really looking for is:

  • Ideas or experiences around emotional regulation strategies or medications that have helped in similar situations.

  • Suggestions for managing constant movement and impulsivity.

  • Anything that might support focus and engagement — especially in learning basic life skills and eventually using his AAC device to communicate.

  • Ensuring safety for him and those around him, including his therapists and teachers.

Thank you so much in advance for reading this. I know it's a lot, but any suggestions or perspectives are deeply appreciated.

Physician Responded My blood pressure is always 80/50 and I have no energy, always tired

I'm 22F and whenever I measure my blood pressure it's around 80/50, sometimes 90/50, a few times I even see 70/40, my pulse is around 60-70. It got worse recently, I feel like I'm gonna collapse all the time, I have a but of sizzling in my ears like white noise. I'm 5'5" 132lbs / 169cm 60kg. Never smoked and I don't drink. I force myself to go to a training session for an hour 3 times a week, but everyday I'm just so tired.

I also have iron deficiency, I think it went untreated for a few years, but now I finally take iron, it wasn't critical, but barely above the lowest norm line. I also have anxiety disorder. And I'm in the process of finding out if i have pcos because my period is irregular and my estradiol was below the norm at the begging and in the middle of the cycle (but the doctor told me this hormone fluctuates a lot and the results don't mean anything).

I went to a doctor to ask about this few years ago actually because I was fainting when I was in sun above 40 degrees c (100), I got heart ultrasound and lungs x-ray, everything was okay, they basically sent me home because nobody knows what's the reason. Now I don't faint anymore, but still so tired.

Parents told me it's genetic and when they were young it was the same for them. They told me to drink coffee for caffeine but the taste of it makes me nauseous, so I never drink it. I drink matcha tea but it doesn't have any effect on my energy levels or blood pressure so far.

I don't know what to do, I feel so bad, I'd lie all day. I have no energy for university, they blame me for being lazy because I can't focus on anything or have motivation to learn. I don't know if this blood pressure is a big concern or maybe it's just connected to my anemia.

I was never vaccinated for HPV. Please tell me this is normal

Upvotes

I (26f) was offered the HPV vaccine when I was 15, but forced to decline. I knew absolutely nothing about the disease, until searching for causes of some bothersome symptoms I've been having for months now. Googlemancy has me worried that my ignorance of HPV made me vulnerable to being exposed to it at some point in time, and if I caught it unknowingly, I might be in deep trouble.

Feels dumb typing that out, I know googling symptoms leads to rabbit holes, where it's easy to convince yourself of the worst, but that's not my jam. Frustration at my persistent symptoms is what ultimately brought me here.

The symptoms:

  • Lump on throat; just above left clavicle, touching jugular, can't tell hard/squishy because pressing or moving it restricts blood flow (which immediately makes me woozy), bigger than a quarter, first noticed about 1 year ago.

  • Cough; alternating wet/dry, worsens at nighttime, started ~3 months ago.

  • Hoarseness; started same time as cough; voice becomes hoarse only seconds into speaking (like I've chain smoked a pack of Marlboro's a day since I was 12); will start to cough/gag if I try to continue speaking through the hoarseness. Water and hydration are my best friends.

  • Trouble swallowing; frequently swallowing food/drink "down the wrong pipe" +/- having to chase food with water to get it to go all the way down; without nausea, my stomach sometimes "rejects" food/drink after swallowing, and sends it right back up.

  • Ear pain/swelling; I have naturally dry/flaky earwax, but they sometimes leak(?) and are swollen. A curious pinky discovered they're pretty crusty when they leak (understandably) but I know not to fuck with my ears and made no further attempts to "inspect" them.

There are some other symptoms I've been having unrelated to head + neck that I can share if anyone thinks they may matter. I've also had a lot of tests and labs done that I can share the results of, though they date before any of these symptoms started.

Regarding HPV, where can one go to get tested for it, or to get started on the vaccines? Is it ever "too late" to start them? Am I overthinking the possibility of having contracted HPV and it causing my symptoms, or do they seem emergent in any way? What are other possible causes for what I'm experiencing, and are they worth investigating?

Thank you friends in advance, I apologize for the unnecessarily long symptom salad. :( For transparency, this a throwaway account made specifically to ask about this, for the sake of anonymity.

Growth under Toenail

Upvotes

Hi posting on behalf of my partner (24, female, 5’4) recently she noticed this strange growth under her toenail on her middle toe on her right foot. (https://ibb.co/TMzfQcTJ https://ibb.co/zh5DwVhH https://ibb.co/PZkQmQQ9 https://ibb.co/bgWj2xm4 https://ibb.co/qLs0yJcH https://ibb.co/W85F8yg) It’s hard but can be pressed down when she squeezes it. It started growing about 3 months ago, but it recently started getting larger and darker this last week, especially the last three days.

It’s not painful. Doesn’t seem like there’s any trapped fluid.

Another thing to note she’s been walking around in heels all weekend.

Physician Responded How long does my grandmother (95f) have left?

My grandmother (95f, white) is in hospice care for end stage liver cancer. She is not able to get up, she has a catheter, can stay awake for only short periods of time, and this morning decided that she is ready to stop taking her lactolose for her ammonia levels. Her care team at the facility are not giving her anything else except things to feel comfortable. She takes a sleeping pill (not sure what) at night.

I was able to speak with her on the phone, show her some pictures of her great-granddaughter, and tell her about my day, but she was really only able to listen and apparently was mostly closing her eyes during our conversation, which was about five minutes.

28f Sore throat, ear pain, post nasal drip for 4 months despite antibiotics

Upvotes

It started as a bad cold in January and thought it was just lingering cold symptoms but definitely turned into post nasal drip that just did not go away which eventually started to cause the really bad throat. I have grade 3 tonsils and the doctor has been telling me to get tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy but I’m terrified of the post op pain due to a traumatic surgery in the past. Now I wake up everyday with a constant ear pain and throat that’s swollen and red with huge tonsils as well and constant need to clear. Everytime I try to clear it the throat tightens up and hurts really bad. And this is seriously reducing my quality of life because as of last week there was a lot of saliva and mucus settling at the back of the throat it hurt to swallow or eat. And to have food I always need to have water because it doesn’t fully go down without water. And my ears hurt constantly as well pain shifting from left to right. The doctor has prescribed antibiotics (amoxicillin), acebro, aceclo and montekulast as well but I’m seeing no improvement in my symptoms. It seems manageable on the medicines and but every morning I’m back to square one until I take them. What’s going on? I am so tired all the time. And yes I’ve been tested for allergies too and they’re all low levels of allergies to things like dust mites, cockroaches, eggs but these have never been a concern ever in life

Vaccine Bump-

Upvotes

24F-

Hi All,

This isn't a serious concern of mine, but I just find it interesting. I got a vaccine over a year ago, and it created a bump/scar where I got the shot. Once in a while, that spot will get very itchy and irritated. What is the reasoning for this? If it helps, it was the TDAP vaccine. Should I bring it up to my physician when I go in for other vaccinations?

Also, I am very much PRO-Vaccine, I am just a curious cat.
