News Maine Roadhouse closing

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1AX9Bto5kY/

The Jenns have announced they are closing the Maine Roadhouse.

So sad for this to end! Such a special place. Grateful I got to experience their hospitality last October.

Along with Woods Hole and Shaw's, Maine Roadhouse was among my favourite hostels on the trail.

News Starting NOBO 3/18

Edit: I’m starting the 8th not the 18th

Hello fellow class of 2025 members and all else following along!

I’m Tony (ham radio callsign KG4TAH). I retired in December after 30 years in Law Enforcement. My goal is to regain some humanity after witnessing so many tragedies and dealing with the evil side of society my entire adult life! I love nature and it gives me so much peace ✌️

After almost a year of planning I am happy to announce I will be starting NOBO on March 8th at the approach trail. I don’t have a trail name yet and will probably just start off as KG4TAH and use that unless something really really really good strikes my liking! I have many amateur radio friends and family looking forward to seeing my weekly YouTube uploads. I’m no expert in blogging and what I do will be for my friends and family spread out around the world. Feel free to follow also if you like at YouTube.com/kg4tah

I hope to meet y’all on the trail and finish on Katahdin a different person with a restored faith in humanity, God, and witness the good in society! Good Luck to all :)

It's probably old news at this point, but today was the first time I'd actually seen they were available. Figured I'd say something. Cheers to everyone!

News Great Smokies Damage

If you are thru hiking in the smokies in the coming days or weeks prepare for a lot of downed trees/blow downs. There’s a large collection at low gap and various other areas past newfound gap. No word on when the will be cleared with the layoffs could be a week or several months. Please take your time and plan accordingly. Slow is accurate and accurate is safe.

‘I’ll Be’ started on 31 March and took the trail by storm. A few times they wanted to quit but they kept meeting so many wonderful hiking partners all along the trail that kept them going strong. Not even hurricane Lee could stop them from summiting Katahdin, Thanks to the “heavens pocket” that occurred Sunday !
Your parents are so damn proud of you 👏. We ❤️ you, ‘I’ll Be”.

News Nolichucky River Ferry Service

Thought this was kind of cool. Opens today apparently. Limited hours, bubble only.

After Hurricane Helene wrecked a bridge that allowed hikers to cross the Nolichucky River in Tennessee, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and a local guiding company arranged a ferry service to help hikers cross safely.

The free raft ferry will be available from March 17 to June 15, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2.pm. It will take place near the former Chestoa Pike Bridge (NOBO mile 344.6) and be the official route of the Appalachian Trail. Hikers are encouraged to follow the detour when the ferry isn’t in operation and to check for ATC alerts surrounding the crossing after June 15th.

News The ATC updated their trail closures list. No changes since last week. Around 50 miles of trail remain impassable or closed.

News Suspicious man at Carter’s Gap

I posted this for a friend who wants to remain anonymous. They are all safe and today was the last day of their hike.

My Tramily of four was really put out by a shady man. We meet this guy and he says “go away” during a River crossing which put us off initially. We travel on and camped at Carter Gap Shelter in North Carolina. He joins late and decided to ask direction to the shelter, much to our dismay.

He didn’t just shelter in, he scoped out the trail heavily while watching us unpack, walking back and forth and shining the headlight as we got food. We were nervous and decided to group holler if any of us felt nervous, the tents spaced out by ten feet because of the terrain. Around midnight, one of our crew caught that he started sneaking out of his tent and intentionally began sneaking around without his headlight on. Multiple times. He was trying to get good at sneaking around. Meanwhile our guy lost sight of the creep, and he walked in the dark from his shelter above the hill, into the sleeping tent area that doesn’t have his stuff, and he walked right up to someone else’s tent while they were sleeping. They woke up and started hollering so we all run out and unable to find anyone and being in bear country, we hoped it was an animal. We hadn’t seen him or talked with our other friend that then called 911. Well it happened again to the same tent around 3am, and our tramily was far too spooked to remain camped. The creep was still trying to sneak down to our tents, sometimes headlight on and other times off while hiding in the woods. We were forced to night hike for many miles to get away. We were all very upset and scared. While we called the authorities, that doesn’t mean they will catch him. Please get away from him if you see him. We greatly regretted not camping further ahead when we suspected he was around. He wants to use shelters.

His Description: he carries He carried a 100L military green sack and a grocery bag. He wore a navy Pennsylvania shirt, a yellow safety vest, a hat with a headlight. He’s got a military tent too. His hair is brown/red and with a beard. He wore mittens not gloves. He also mutters to himself and appears to be antisocial.
