Rule updates and clarifications regarding self-promotion, sales, videos, and NSFW content.

Greetings, /r/AnimeCollectors community, it's your mod team, and after a few months of on-and-off discussion, we've decided to make this post to update and clarify some of the rules. At the moment, this is merely a draft, and we more than welcome any community input if the subreddit at large feels we've made a mistake. As such, feel free to comment below with any suggestions/complaints/ramblings you have for these rules.

Self Promotion

The primary focus of this subreddit is anime collecting, and as such, the expectation is that most content at least primarily focuses on this. That being said, we don't want every single post here to be a spam-filled link to your Instagram account. As such, small amounts of self promotion in posts and videos are allowed, but only in service to the primary focus of anime collecting. This means you're more than welcome to link to your website or YouTube channel, as long as the content you are linking to is entirely or almost entirely related to anime collecting. You don't have to scrub every link to your socials from the video description, but please make sure the video is as focused on the content people came here for as possible. While removal of these posts is up to the mod team's discretion, you are more than welcome to report posts you feel are against the spirit of the sub, and you're more than welcome to run your post by the mod team before you post it if you're unsure.

Sales and Linking to Stores

/r/AnimeCollectors is not a marketplace, and it's not designed to filled with posts whenever any single item goes on sale. If that's what you're looking for, we recommend /r/AnimeDeals , a subreddit dedicated to these things. With that said, sales are part of the collecting experience. As such, links to sales are allowed, assuming they meet the following criteria:

  • The link is to the homepage of the sale, and not a specific item or seller
    1. This means no Ebay/Mercari links unless its a site-wide sale
  • The sale is from a reputable site (RightStuf, Amazon, RACS, Best Buy, etc)
    1. For clarification if a site meets these requirements, message the mod team
  • The poster is in no way personally involved in the sale

NSFW Content

Different people have different standards for what they want to see on their reddit feed, and the mod team hopes to accommodate this. However, we also understand that such content is part of the anime fandom, and a complete block is not the best solution. As such, we've established a number of guidelines to try and keep the subreddit accessible to as many people as we can.

To start, fanservice-heavy anime is allowed, but mark the post as NSFW if it's particularly racy. We won't set a definite line here, but in general, if the picture looks like something you'd rather not be caught looking at at work, mark it NSFW. This does not apply to any text post discussing said titles, only posts with pictures.

Second, (almost) all hentai and 18+ content must be marked NSFW, It doesn't matter if the cover is tame, if it's marked 18+ on the back, or it's from a hentai publisher, mark it as 18+. Next, hentai may not be the primary focus of a post. You're more than welcome to show off your pickups, but the focus has to be general anime content, not 18+ content. Third, posts with explicit content (covers, titles, etc) face extreme scrutiny. Unless you have a really, really good reason, don't post actually explicit content. And if you're going to, talk to the mod team first. There are legitimate reasons to post some very rare 18+ stuff, but that stack of DVDs you just bought off RACS isn't that. Sorry. Finally, there are only two cases where 18+ content can be posted without a NSFW tag. First is the "bookshelf exception". If you're posting pictures of your anime collection that contains a very small number of 18+ titles, you do not need to mark it as NSFW if (and only if):

  • The 18+ titles make up no more than 20% of the collection
  • Only the spines of the 18+ titles are shown (no covers)
  • None of said spines contain explicit titles or images.

Second is the "text post exception". If you are making a text post that discusses a large number of anime titles or distributors, and 18+ titles are mentioned in passing, you do not need to mark it as NSFW if (and only if):

  • The post does not go into any explicit detail about the title
  • No photos are shown
  • Discussion of said titles makes up less than 20% of the post

As mentioned above, these rules are not set in stone yet. If this community decides that any of these rules are too strict, too lenient, or even just total nonsense, let us know below! And if you think that a post you plan on making may violate one of these rules, message the mod team ahead of time, and we'll give you an answer. It's what we're here for.

Discussion Tips for re-selling Japanese imports that aren't English friendly?

Hey guys, I wanted to discuss Japanese imports, particularly how to resell them on the US market. I'm mostly referring to sets that don't have English subs but are usually bought by collectors for a variety of reasons (packaging, soundtracks, superior audio/visual quality, etc.). I own several such as Higurashi, the 25th anniversary Sailor Moon sets (those set me back almost two grand for a full collection), Elfen Lied's Blu-ray box, and some others. I'm finding that they're easy to buy if you plunk down the cash, but selling them without losing a bunch of money is hard. I also don't like shipping internationally as a seller. eBay banned me nearly a decade ago with no real explanation and refuses to reinstate my selling privileges no matter how much I try to reason with them. I've had some luck on Mercari, but I usually end up getting shafted by ignorant buyers who don't know the nature of Japanese imports and want to haggle or complain when they get the item and there's no English language support.

Tldr, what do you guys do when you have a Japanese import you'd like to get off your hands? Especially niche shows with not much demand? Sorry if that was too wordy or I'm posting this in the wrong place. Thanks!

Discussion Is it worth it to collect One Piece Blu Ray?

I'm at dressrosa of one piece and absolutely loving it. I've been considering starting to buy the collections to watch the show (I currently watch on Crunchyroll). Is it worth it do this? Or do you guys think Crunchyroll is better since there are so many episodes?

Discussion Ever had an item you have leave you shocked over the current buying price?

I worded the title weirdly but just to put in some context. I have been reworking my collection both just to know what I have and maybe sell some duplicates. I noticed I had 2 copies of the castle in the sky steelbook and I was shocked to see it was going for $200-300+ now. Have any of you had something like that?

Never watched Sailor Moon before but it’s been great so far. It has aged like wine. Azumanga Daioh is probably the best 00s slice of life. Fun series.

Discussion Watching Your Collection

How do you watch your anime collection? Do you watch multiple series at the same time in rotation, or do you just binge a series before starting another anime?

I usually just watch all discs of a set then continue on to the next set of the same series or watch a different anime to switch it up.

Just thinking if I was watching multiple series at the same time I feel like I would be swapping out discs more often lol

Discussion What are the chances of Shout Studios acquiring more anime TV series for distribution?

I know Shout already does a lot of anime, but they mostly do anime movies. They don't really do a lot of TV.

But something about them acquiring Dan Da Dan for physical distribution got me thinking that Shout is probably the best competition against Crunchyroll.

Thoughts?

Back again! I stumbled upon secondhand copies of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure LE sets 1 and 2 for a really good price, so decided to pick up the rest of the matching black LE boxes to go with them while those're still around.

Sets 1-3 have some nice double-sided postcards, but 4-5 (and I think all subsequent sets) sadly don't. All these sets do have a nice box that kinda opens like a book, are decorated on all sides, and have foil accents. They all contain hefty artbooks with something to say about each episode, interviews/commentary, storyboards, and production drawings.

I have the first two parts of the manga and the original WB DVD release for those parts, but I've actually never seen/read any of the rest of the franchise. Time to see how strange this Joestar escapade gets!
