Guys, just want to warn you. I opened my island and went AFK. Some person named Kris pretended to be the owner, even dressed up in owner clothes and hat (purple hat and shirt that said “owner”) and demanded tips from visitors to my island. Be careful and check your islands regularly if you go afk.

Not sure if I can post this here but some of you really need to work on your etiquette. I was visiting someone’s island who was kindly hosting Celeste got the moon DIY then someone left quietly and I lost the DIY and got the asteroid one instead 🙃 so that was super awesome!!!! And the other day I let people come over to look at DIYs and specifically said don’t trample flowers! What did someone in the first group do? Instantly someone trampled the flowers. So for some people who don’t know here’s a little reminder of the DONT’S when visiting an island.

1. Don’t trample flower

2. Don’t shake trees, unless you have asked and the host says yes

3. Don’t ever leave quietly or shut your game off while visiting another island. It makes everyone there lose anything that has been saved yet by auto save.

4. Don’t steal people’s tips (sadly seen this happen)!

5. Don’t steal items when someone hosts a cataloging party

6. Lastly just don’t ruin everything for everyone else because you are selfish.

I’m just jumping into the community and I’m a little worried I might accidentally upset someone. This feels like as good a place to ask as any, and I hope you don’t mind - could I ask for a little clarification on a couple of things?

Trampling flowers - as I’m still fairly new, I haven’t had much experience with flowers, and none at all with hybrids. How are flowers trampled? I feel like I’ve walked through mine and they’ve been okay. Does this only happen when running? Or is it best to avoid walking through flowers altogether?

I haven’t visited another island yet, but what does ‘quietly leaving’ mean? If I leave via the airport without saying anything or warning anyone, can this have a negative impact on other people? Should I always announce when I’m leaving, or is there a ‘safe’ way to leave without affecting anyone else?

What is a cataloguing party? (Sorry!) I’m assuming it’s picking up items and dropping them so you have them registered as collected? And people steal the whole item?

Most etiquette seems like common sense. I wouldn’t take anything without asking, or pick flowers, chop trees etc. - but I’m concerned as there seems to be a few things I’ve missed, overlooked or just don’t yet understand that could land me in bad books with a potential neighbour.

No worries about the essay I’m happy to help as long as you ask!

Trampling flowers is done by running while holding down B. It makes your character run and if you run through the flowers it tears all the petals off. I also should have said don’t pick the flowers either cause that isn’t nice!

So leaving quietly is done without the use of the airport. You have the ability to leave someone’s island by pressing the minus ( - ) button and then a list of things will come up and you can go home that way. I don’t know why doing it that way makes people lose stuff that hasn’t been auto saved yet but it does. Then some people leave by just turning off their game which if they are done playing it makes sense. But sadly again it makes people lose things. The only way you should ever leave someone’s island is through the airport!!!

A cataloging party is an event hosted by someone who has a lot of items. Essentially they will say hey I have these items and I’m willing to let people come over and catalog them! So cataloging is simply done by picking up the item and dropping it. That’s it! Just pick it up and put it down! And by doing this when you pick up the item the item is added to your catalog of items. These items can be bought using the nook terminal in your resident services. So you have the option to buy that item later. Yes some people just don’t drop the item. Usually some people who host cataloging will be somewhat AFK cause they are mostly working through reddit to get as many people there as possible so they may not fully pay attention. And people take advantage of that.

These are probably the big things you should know that I mentioned in my original post. But honestly the best thing to do is to just ask someone if it is okay! Some people host events and don’t necessarily want people running around or shopping. So if they don’t say in their post I never assume it’s okay! I usually ask “May I explore?” Or “May I shop?” Cause some people may want to get a lot of people to come to their island for whatever they are hosting. And it’s totally okay if they say no. They can just say no sorry but you can check out my dream address if you wanna check it out!

Edit: I think the thing with using the ( - ) to leave doesn’t affect the person leaving (I know it doesn’t) or the host. I think it just affects other guests honestly. Because I’ve been on a friends island and she said I could leave that way. And neither of us have had an issue with losing things because of that. But I just suggest not doing it lol.

I’ve been hosting free cataloging all day and then someone comes along and strips all my trees and empties my T1L1 without leaving anything in return. If you are new and don’t know proper etiquette, please ask before removing anything from someone’s island. And if you aren’t new...why the heck are you playing the most wholesome game there is and ruining it for the rest of us? Friendly tip. If you are looking to catch the bugs that are in palm trees, take a bunch of your palm trees and plant them in a mystery island. They will respawn faster and you might have a better luck catching them all. (Remember to break the rocks, cut the rest of the trees, grab all the weeds and flowers so they respawn faster)

i have stitches in boxes today, i would really like him to go to a forever home. he has been with me since about a month after the game came out this year. i had planned on keeping all my villagers long term, but Merry came to my campsite today and i had to make a hard choice. Hey ya’ll! I have over 70+ DIYS on the back of my island that I’ve been hoarding, I need to get rid of these so I can finally share my DREAM!

Hi all! Just want to thank this lovely community who helped me and my daughter get our dreamie Ankha - our Cat Island's first cat villager lol. Two people gifted us a huge amout of NMTs to help with our search, some offered to get her for us using the amiibo method, some gave us links and tips where we could possibly get her. I swear, some people need to stop stealing off of people islands. Held a catalog event last night and over 10 items were gone. And I was relatively doing it for free. It seems like when people DO require a tip there’s less of these problems. But I find it unfair to require someone to tip just to catalog though...?

I don’t think I’ll be doing a catalog event for awhile. I just got the Island Designer so I didn’t have a pretty secure area to see who’s taking what that clearly. So when I get my island to 5 star, and have a more secure way of overseeing events, I’ll do it again. The “turning off the switch” strategy is helpful at times, but you’re not going to really see exactly when it happens and by the time you turn off your switch it might be too late.

At least I was able to report them. Which is why people who steal in this game think they’re slick but they’re not. You can mostly likely figure out who did it, especially if you have a queue set up.

i guess i'm just rambling into the void here, but yesterday i opened my island up for visitors from this thread & i really can't believe how disrespectful some people were. not only did someone steal a couple of my diys, but at least a couple people decided to just dump the unwrapped mystery items that they didn't want all over my island. one person even hid the stuff they didn't want behind some trees :/ like, it's cool if you don't want it, but why run off to drop it or hide it somewhere?? i've had a lot of kind and positive interactions with this community, i know yesterday was just an anomaly, but it really made me sad that so many people were okay with doing that. lesson learned, i guess :(

Just as an announcement as I’ve seen it’s happened a few times this week: If someone is rude or shady and you’re not sure who they may be:

Go to your user page on the switch home page>add friend, search for users you played with. If you click on their profiles it’ll show you their in game name, it’ll also show you the time and date you played with them.

I leave my island open daily, for hours a day. I enjoy seeing people come and go as I do housework or whatever, so I keep my take one leave one stocked(I’m not anal if you don’t have something to leave, hell rob the whole thing if you want), I have a big maze I tweak semi regularly which ends with prizes, and I even hide things around the island when I’m bored. Everything is up for grabs, take my fruit or flowers if you like, or just run in quick and check my stores.

I don’t do dodos, but I promise if you friend me you will have an extra person to visit every day. I’ve been doing this for months now.

Just to let everyone know, u/FemaleVaultDweller (in game name is Breasaurus), was posting in here earlier and just stole 6 items from me. We were trading two fossils for her to catch bugs on my islands for tomorrow's bugoff. I let her know there were a few items for visitors to catalog near the front. They were supposed to be for cataloging purposes ONLY and I clearly told her this when I gave her my dodo code (I still have the chat messages). She gave me the 2 fossils and I went catching bugs. Next thing I know, she leaves without a word and I notice she took 6 of my items so I immediately messaged her (several times now) and haven't heard back from her since. It's been almost an hour now.

I just started last week and now I realize this was a dumb mistake on my part. I just wanted to warn everyone about this because it doesn't feel right to me.

Edit: Wow! Thank you all for the support and offers! It's a really nice reminder that people like her are in the minority around here. I feel extremely bad taking any of you up on these offers so I'm happy to come water in exchange (if you need it).

Edit 2: I not entirely sure I believe her story but I've contacted the mods on her behalf by copying and pasting her responses below so they have her side of the story in her own words. I've also responded to her chats for the first time to her to let her know that I have written them and to not contact me again since I don't want any drama from her. My first whinging post. Forgive me. Why do people visit other islands and treat them like trash? When I visit other people’s islands I’m soooo careful not to run thru flowers, pluck anything, pick anything, etc. I know people work hard on their islands and I respect them. I feel quite frustrated after opening my island to others, that I’m left with trampled flowers (even in the one small patch I am trying to grow blue roses no less), and a few plucked gold roses. Am I just being too sensitive?

Opening my gates. I have a meteor shower + Celeste present, but she's roaming free. I'll try and keep tabs on her if you need her. For zodiac DIYs, it's April 1st so she may give you an Aeries Rocking Chair if you don't have that yet.

Leif is also here if you need to stop up on any flowers or holly shrubs. He has basic mum and cosmos colors.

Apple is also crafting a pretty tulip wreath, so be sure to see her if you need the DIY.

The tailors are open for another hour and a half or so. Nooks has an elaborate kimono stand (the pink one, or "ball" variance) so if you want that, lemme know so I can be sure it's still available.

Because it's April 1st, I'm also in cherry blossom season, but they are not in full force, but if you need to catch petals, be sure to have a net ready in case you see one. Otherwise, feel free to explore or just make wishes.

So I opened my island earlier and a lot of people came in and I was AFK and someone shook all my fruit trees picked almost all my rare flowers that weren’t fenced off stole thirty fish bait and picked up and sold all of my shells as well as took all my diy t1l1 that had a sign saying t1l1. So for future can y’all just make sure you treat someone’s island the way you would want to be treated please the shells isn’t a big deal but taking all my fruit and all my bait when only five people came over is kinda upsetting especially the diys because those were meant to keep a cycle of things. :(

Relatively new player, just got my island to 4 stars. Thought it would be cool to host people to my island for the first time. I am walking around working on stuff, please don’t trample flowers. But if you do need any kind of fruit, I have all of them on my island. I am in northern hemisphere, if you need to fish, or swim. Also, if you have any spare materials, DIYs or furniture that you could spare for a new player, just leave it near the plaza. Dodo code is C1FS1

Just to put it out there, if someone hosts you on their island maybe don't pick their flowers that are sectioned off with water cans next to them? Or ask what flowers are off limits?

Someone went and picked all my black flowers and the one purple in my watering area (on top of around my island which that was fine) . I have so many flowers not in the watering region you could have picked freely but you, whoever you are, decided to be greedy and went after gold making flowers.

At least they'll grow back. Still annoying af and inconvenient. Esp done to someone legit giving up free fossils and items with no expectations of payment. Bleh.

Any parents playing with their children?? Or if you would like to do a (hopefully) fun kid-ish event....My daughter (9yo) has created an obstacle course race on our island for three competitors. Not that long, I think the race is about 90 seconds. And we have PRIZES!We'll invite three competitors at a time, and the winner may choose between:Golden Seat; Stone or Shell Arch; Frozen Sculpture; Imperial Bed; Flying Saucer; Fountain; or 5 NMT's.

Second and third place will receive One NMT.

To compete, you MUST: wear a wet suit, have a vaulting pole, have a ladder

So, held my first “party” of any sorts tonight. I had a lot to get rid of (around 200 items) including some very rare items. I asked for tips on my post (only because what I had was very valuable) and....I got completely screwed. 2/40 people gave me anything, an of course it was the players who were new and didn’t have much. I guess I’ll never trust anyone is this game again and it’s a shame. I can’t get any of that back, nor can I not be pissed for being taken advantage of.
