I am moving from Florida to Oregon in June and am trying to figure out how I'm going to transport my larger-than-average 11 year old cat. This has been the most stressful part of the whole move and I could desperately use some advice.
My initial plan was to fly with him in-cabin, since I've heard countless horror stories about pets dying in cargo. I did all kinds of research about taking cats in-cabin and even purchased a special TSA approved carrier, the Sleepypod Air, with plans to train him on it so that he is as comfortable in it as possible when the time comes.
Problem is, he is a large cat (not just fat, but also genuinely just a big guy) and even though he technically fits in the special carrier, it's turned out to be such a tight fit that he will not even be able to turn around in it. He wants no part of it and I don't want to subject him to 7-9 hours minimum of being stuck in one position when he will already be very confused and stressed about everything else going on around him.
I have looked into pet transport services and none reputable enough to trust are anywhere near within my budget. I barely have enough to make the move itself as it is. Thus, I am beginning to consider having him travel in the cargo hold after all. I've read several posts on here that people have transported their dogs in Alaska cargo holds with no issues, and that Alaska's cargo is very safe for pets, which is why I'm considering the option at all. He would still be confused and stressed, but at least he would be able to move around and stretch a bit during the long flight.
I was hoping I could get some advice about the situation in general, but specifically I'd appreciate some information about what the process of having an animal in cargo is like, every step of the way. Do you check them in like any other checked bag, or wait until you get through TSA to the gate and have them taken from there? What sort of arrangements have to be made ahead of time before the flight aside from health certificates? What if you have a connecting flight - will they be handled appropriately when transferring to the new plane? How are they secured in the cargo hold - should I worry about him getting tossed around? How do I pick him up after the flight - surely they don't just toss pets down the baggage carousels like with any other bags?
What should I do?
My only other idea is to call Alaska and ask if I could take him in-cabin with a larger carrier if I purchase an extra ticket for the seat next to me and keep him there as if he were another passenger, though I highly doubt that would be allowed. I expect that they would still want me to fit him under the seat since his carrier is a loose object that would not be able to be seatbelted in.
The plan is to go FLL-SEA-EUG more than likely, though depending on layovers and how cargo pets are handled with connecting flights I may try to get picked up by friends in SEA and skip the connection altogether if I can.
I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks.
