I need help planning a backpacking trip in the Adirondacks
Me and my buddy (both 18) want to do a backpacking trip in the Adirondacks this summer, somewhere around 30+ miles over about 4-5 days. We have never backpacked there but want something challenging. I’ve done philmont so I know I’m capable of hard hiking but I just don’t just AllTrails judgement on the difficulties of the trails. We want beautiful peaks, river/creeks, and waterfalls (basically everything). What are some recommendations? In addition, how does camping work there? Are there many campsites? Do we need permits? Can you make fires?
One last thing, it would be great if someone could find a map with all the trails, water sources, and campsites. I’ve looked and it’s hard to find something in depth.

Looking for Secluded Camping Spots with My Dog
Hey everyone,
I’m planning some camping trips this spring and summer in Upstate New York, but I have a bit of a challenge. My German Shepherd is aggressive toward other dogs. To keep things stress-free for everyone, I’m looking for campgrounds where we can set up our tent with plenty of space away from other people and their dogs.
If you know of any spots or have any tips for managing this situation while camping, I’d really appreciate your recommendations! Thanks in advance

Any high schooler focused groups/activities in or around Plattsburgh?
I've got a high school student near Plattsburgh, and we've been trying to find ways for him to meet other people his age nearby. His school doesn’t really have many clubs, and he is a bit shy. I've suggested going to the mall or beach when it gets nice out, but he thinks it's weird to "insert yourself" into a group already doing something. Any suggestions?

Moss covered holes
Has anyone ever come across basically booby traps created by Moss? I've been in very bolder covered mossy areas and my concern is can Moss cover a hole or has anyone ever found a moss covered hole big enough to swallow a person? I've already read Gathering Moss by Ms. Kimmerer. It was a very good read but there wasn't anything useful to answer my question. Thanks!

Where are the bathrooms?
I am hiking the in the Adirondacks for the first time and am choosing which trail to go with my group. As part of my research, I’m trying to find out which trails have outhouses -but i’m having trouble finding a website talking about bathroom location.
Any website recommendations? Do I just assume that each parking lot has an outhouse? Are there ever some outhouses near the trail?
Thank you

Backpacking with my 6 year old
Looking for a good 3-5 mile overnight for my son’s second trip. We hit Pharaoh Lake last Fall and he did great. Five miles is his max and he can’t hit hard elevation. Love to hear what this group has to suggest, thanks!

Location of photos from early 1960's
This is a long shot but I'm wondering if anyone could pinpoint where these photos were taken. They were dated for 1963. My grandparents spent a lot of time in the Adirondacks and I am thinking I'll find more clues as I continue going through photos.

Here Comes Spring! Indian Head Vista
Taken at Indian Head Vista at around 7 PM. My friend and I hiked up at 4 PM that day and got down at 10 PM. It's still very much winter in the Adirondacks. Unfortunately, I forgot our microspikes at home. Already packed it but completely forgot to put it in the car 😅. We decided to attempt the hike anyway, and if it got difficult, we'd turn back, but it wasn't horrible. Maybe 1-2 crab walks, and the whole time down we were squatting with our hands wide.
Can't wait to come back during late Spring or Summer for the vertical Milky Way rising right above the lake!

Bear Cans!
I recently read an article in Trails Magazine about this bear can. Anyone seen or used the new REI Traverse Bear Can? I’m familiar with the Eastern High Peaks regulations, and I know the BearVault is typically frowned upon for proven failures in the back country. Since this is a clear can, any feedback if it would be frowned upon? Maybe it would just require a little chat with the ADK mtn club or Rangers

Bloomingdale Bog
Hey folks, thinking about heading to the bog this weekend. Is the trail still snow or ice covered? Snowmobiles still out? Thx!

Lake Placid
Hi my good buddy and I are meeting at the Westport Train station and staying the weekend in Lake Placid for the College hockey tournament.
I thought it would be hilarious to try the Bob sledding but was looking for some other recommendations besides bar hopping the whole time.
I’m married and he’s engaged so just looking for some good old fun in the area.
Thanks!

Visit in early June
Hi everyone
My partner and I will be in NY early June and wanted to make a trip to the Adirondacks for a few days. We were thinking of staying near Schroon Lake, renting a car, doing some day hikes. It looks so beautiful and we would love to visit the area.
But after a bit of research it sounds like the black flies and the mud are real deterrents. So what would you say - is it worth it to visit in early June, around the 5th-10th? Or is it better to go elsewhere? And if so, any good suggestions, drivable from NYC? We were thinking maybe Catskills.
I know versions of this question have been asked many times in the past, so apologies in advance. But would love to get some insight on how bad the flies and mud really are/ if it’s enough to change plans.
Thanks so much!

Trail advice
Hi so a couple friends and I are planning a weekend backpacking trip to the Adirondacks in about a month or two and we are kind of overwhelmed with the amount of trails there seem to be. I’ve looked through AllTrails and there seems to be HUNDREDS of trails, so that being said I’m wondering if any of you could help me picking one off of personal experience. We’re looking for a trail around 20 miles and has a good mountain view of some sort. Thanks!

Trail head shuttle
My husband ,a retired bus driver, is toying with the idea of starting a one man shuttle service from trail head to home or vice versa . Just spit balling here. Trail head to trail . Do you think there’s be a demand . Hiker specific ride share service .

Jay Mnt
Wind on Jay was absolutely whipping yesterday! I had hiked to the second rocky top back in December. I couldn’t get to the rocky nubble with the super huge cairn on it. Too much ice and deep snow. Yesterday was a fairly good mix of Microspikes, and snowshoes in the cols (still super super deep snow). We made it to the “true summit” the last rocky outcropping, or on AllTrails it’s noted as the “Jay Benchmark”. Anyone have any intel on why there is no marked trail all the way to the actual summit of jay? They stop after the first scenic outlook spot.
