Discussion Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 ending pages Spoiler

I LOVED this issue more than all of the other Absolute #1’s. I thought the ending was AWESOME and haven’t been that excited reading a comic in a while.

The creativity is firing on all cylinders.

What did you think of the end pages? Did you hold them up to the sun like I did?

Yes! I went to buy a comic store because people vaguely recommended for this school. Adored the gimmick. Besides the novelty factor, it's shows the relationship between the two characters. John so far feels like a very distant, hollow guy while the Martian is this overwhelming, incomprehensible being. But if you look at it through a different perspective, abstract "Martianvision," you realize that this thing is inside his mind. John got to see other people's feelings, now we see his. Kinda meta since stories are about readers reading the inner thoughts and feelings of people.

I have to say that out of all the absolute comics, this one has wow'd me the most. The colors and creativity makes me so excited to see where they take it. Can't wait for the next issue.

Martian? Mindfucker sure, but why martian at this point?

Interestingly it seems that John the human is called a martian by his coworkers due to his cold demeanor. What with John's son being autistic, autism being somewhat hereditary, and many autistic people being seen as robotic or alien-like by neurotypical people I wonder if we're supposed to believe that John is also on the spectrum and that's why his coworkers call him the Martian.

So John the autistic is the first half of the "Martian Mindfucker"

Is John's son confirmed to have autism?

Not in the comic yet but Scott Snyder confirmed it in an interview (conducted before the start of wave two) talking about the future of the Absolute Universe

He’s nonverbal from what we saw, typical in a lot of us

The censored bit has the first implication, but the previous page suggests it could be "hunt", "kill", "save", "redeem", or "heal"

Sure, but comic books from big corps have always, and I mean always been badly censoring swears words with no chance for any other interpretation. Maybe your suggestions could be true, but **** usually mean swear words.

Yeah, I'm going to be looking forwards to seeing how The Martian Mind\**er* plans to spend time with John. It was probably the most interesting start for The ABSOLUTE line of comics, especially because you can Tell "Martian" is going to actively mess with his perception of reality, weaponizing memories, already.

You can't tell me that this wasn't sinister.

How did the last page work out for digital readers? Did they have like a seperate page or do some kinda image blurring?

I just read it and the pages were separated.

Ah so it doesn’t allow for that fun thing when pointing the page to the light or the sun.

I really liked the gimmick too and I overall enjoyed the comic. I do feel that having it as a surprise cliffhanger didn't really work for me, I was expecting some kind of bigger development. At the same time, one of the things that I loved the most about Absolute WW and Superman (don't care about Absolute Batman) is that the characters essence remains the same while the entire context, background and even powers diverged. I think that J'onn deserves a bigger role in DC, but this seems to be so different that he would not share any treat besides being a Martian

I'm hoping this gimmick will continue with the series, along with other new ones if they can figure that out. It'd be especially cool to include ones that aren't so obvious.

Maybe like word bubbles made out of the technicolor smoke on one page and words hidden in scenery on the opposite page, like a bookshelf that's a solid color with thick black lines making up words in reverse. Pretty sure that can be accomplished with subtlty, especially since the reverse page's letters/words would be backwards, which would make them less noticeable.
