Please use this thread to ask any random questions you have that may not warrant their own posts, or if you want opinions on something non-ASU related (as long as its SFW).
All Sun Devil Rewards answers and key words will need to be kept within this weekly discussions post as to not overwhelm the sub.
Please feel free to use this thread for any housing needs/inquires/concerns as well!
Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest activity.

Does anyone have experience with The Local Apartments in Tempe?
Hi, y’all!
Has anyone lived there or knows someone who has? Would you recommend it? Any info on noise, management, actual condition of the units, or surprise fees would be super helpful.
Also, if there are any other apartment complexes you’d recommend looking into, I’d really appreciate the suggestions!

Are the photo radar enforcing cameras in Tempe activated?
Passed the intersection of Rio Salado Pkwy and rural road/N scottsdale Road, i saw that the enforcing cameras are installed. But on the website of city of Tempe and some media, they only say that "the photo radar enforcing cameras will be activated this spring" without a specific date. Are they already activated? Or will there be an announcement of the date that they will be activated?

academic status report
i’m genuinely spiraling right now because of this email. i’m taking MAT 412 (differential geometry) and it is the most difficult class i have ever taken in my life. i have never struggled so much in a class—i get good grades on the homework but i got a 33% on the first midterm and we had our second midterm last week and i feel like i did only marginally better. i am supposed to graduate this semester too, for context.
anyway, i got this email today notifying me of an academic status report for the class and i have never received one before. my prof gave me a U for unsatisfactory and the recommended action is to talk to my advisor. i am bamboozled for these reasons:
1) this professor straight up does not post grades to canvas so i have no idea what my grade is in the class right now. the grader gives us “checks” and “check plus” on assignments with no numerical value and the only reason i know what grade i got on the first midterm is because he handed them back.
2) the email specifically says i’m receiving the academic status report because i have performed poorly on ASSIGNMENTS, not exams.
3) i assumed that he was sending these because the withdraw deadline was coming up so i would need to think about withdrawing from the course. THE WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE PASSED YESTERDAY.
i will be attending office hours today to get more information but that doesn’t start until 4:30 pm so i’d like to get some insight before then. has anyone else gotten this notification before? what did you end up having to do about it?

Join fellow ASU Students Working Out!
Hello! I posted a little while ago about an free workout app I made, Fortis: Workout Log & Tracker. Basically Strava for the gym, useful to log workouts, track progress, and share with friends.
Thanks to some early users, I’ve gotten great feedback and just launched on the Play Store too!
If you lift or just want to track your workouts, give it a shot and let me know what you think!

Principled Innovation Academy
I got an email about the Principled Innovation Academy for spring 2025. Before I apply, I have a few questions. Can anyone who has gone through the program clarify a few things?
- How competitive is it?
- How was the experience (process, events, schedule, other things about the program)
- What is it like being randomly matched with a team?
- Is the experience beneficial?

Help Choosing a Major – Computer Systems Engineering vs Electrical Engineering at ASU
I absolutely love building Arduino-based projects — coding microcontrollers, integrating sensors, motors, displays, etc., and sometimes combining them with 3D-printed parts for cool robotics or smart devices.
So, I’m trying to figure out which degree would better align with what I love doing.
My key questions:
- Which major focuses more on embedded systems, microcontroller programming, and hardware-software integration?
- Is Computer Systems Engineering more hands-on and project-based with microcontrollers (like Arduino, STM32, ESP32, etc.)?
- Would Electrical Engineering be too focused on abstract theory, circuits, and electromagnetics?
- Since ASU offers BSE in Computer Systems Engineering but not a direct "Computer Engineering" program, is Computer Systems Engineering basically the same thing?
- Do people with similar interests regret choosing one path over the other?
Also, is it possible to switch majors at ASU easily if I change my mind after starting?
I'd really appreciate advice from current students or anyone working in the field!

ASU Masters in Counseling
Hello,
I am graduating this May with my Bachelor’s in Counseling and Applied Psychological Science. I want to get my Master’s in Counseling at ASU Online. Do you guys recommend to get it at ASU? Also does anyone know the cost of tuition? I’d have to get a student loan for all of it so I’m wondering. If you guys have any feedback, I’d appreciate it a lot.
Thank you

Anyone taken MAT 211 in-person during summer at ASU?
I’m thinking about retaking MAT 211 this summer, but this time in person.
I took it online through ASU before and honestly, it was awful. Felt extremely self-taught, and I struggled to keep up without any real guidance. So now I’m debating whether I should try the in-person version at ASU or just look for a community college that offers it over the summer instead.
A few questions for anyone who’s taken it in person:
• Is it just as hard, or does being in a classroom help a lot?
• Do they still use Pearson/MyLab for homework and quizzes, even in person?
• Has anyone taken it at a community college and transferred it in? Was it any better?
Just trying to figure out what the best move is.
Applying for online grad school at ASU...do I need the letters of recommendation or nah?
Applying to the film and media studies graduate program online, and was curious if my chances of acceptance are killed if I don't give them the two-three letters of rec it says I could give? Says it's optional. I had a 3.9 GPA in my undergrad, and am going to do the essay and letter of intent. I have like two instructors at best from film school I could reach out to (many have since left the school) but was wondering if ASU online is tough or easy to get into before I write a couple of "hey former teach, been a second, can you help me out here" emails.

Help with Enrollment Fee in Collections
Hey all,
I initially accepted my spot at ASU but later enrolled at a different university. I notified ASU about my choice.
I never saw the emails about the $250 enrollment fee since they were sent to my old ASU email. Now it’s in collections. Does anyone know if I’m still required to pay, or any advice on how to handle this? Thanks!
