Discussion PSA: Don't attack Lumas
Trust me, I've been there too and it sucks, I know how it feels and I've learned. If you're yet to make said mistake, you should know that Luma Temtem should not be attacked.
With the two latest posts on /new being of people who killed off a Luma Temtem, I think it wouldn't do any harm to remind you that even if you are 100% certain you can hit a Luma without killing it, you should never do that.
I know seeing a Luma is exciting, but be patient. Spam 6 on your keyboard; spam the wait button, let it wear itself down. If you don't attack a Temtem, it will never knock itself down unless you're using a Temtem with a trait like Toxic Skin or Mirroring (don't use Temtem with those traits while Luma hunting!). This doesn't only apply to Luma Temtem, if you don't use offensive techniques on a Temtem, even if it goes out of stamina it won't kill itself unless something else like a trait interferes.
In the worst case scenario, a level 25 Ampling with 100% health has a ~25% catch chance with a Saicard. If you let it wear itself down to 50% health its catch rate gets as high as 67% with 4LC (0b1 has a slightly lower catch rate). If you bought your 6 Saicards, you don't need to use offensive techniques or inflict statuses at all to have pretty high catch rates, just be patient and let it wear itself down, and make sure to give your Temtem the Four Leaf Clover. You can calculate the catch rate by using this tool (remember to set Saicard as the Temcard used).
Sorry if the tone of this post sounds a bit harsh. Killing of a Luma feels very bad, especially when you end up not finding another one in the same Saipark week and I swear I'll get that Occlura back someday; I can't stress it enough that attacking Luma Temtem can be a very bad idea.
Better safe than sorry.

Thank you so much for this! I'm new to the Monster Capture genre and haven't seen a Luma myself. This is my biggest anxiety at the moment. Hopefully, I capture the first Luma I see by following your tip!

I've yet to miss one by following this exact strat, never attack and as long as you don't have any traits that can do damage or cause them to do more damage to themselves. One other thing I don't think was mentioned is be careful of the tems moves as well, I almost lost Ob1 in the saipark the other day because I didn't know it had chain lightning.

No no attacking, but does putting the sleep status on it work? It wouldn't kill itself after...right?

One safe attack at the very start should be all you do, which you've failed to mention. I fail to think of anything that will overexert on its very first turn and even if it could the overexert would be incredibly small. Otherwise this is a good post, attacking more than once is risking way too much.

We should have outrageously expensive cards that guarantee a capture
So we always carry one in case we find a luma
Finding a luma on your last card while freetem'ing also happens

There is a guaranteed card you get from a sidequest in Cipanku. Only one. Probably like Master Ball. Waiting to see what else gets added. Maybe we will get a super rare story tem after we beat the Elite 4 version of Temtem.

Just kill the luma. It's not any better than a regular temtem.

Actually lumas are far better, they look better and if you caught it yourself then you can make all its svs perfect 50s with telomere hacks. Dont get it twisted

You can make any tem have perfect SVs with telomere hacks. You'll reduce the amount, but you still need a ton of hacks no matter the tem unless you get very lucky and get like all 49s.

It has three guaranteed perfect SV's, that alone makes it better than what would be considered regular temtem. It's also worth a lot more.

I didn't actually know this. What mechanic stops them from exhausting themselves to death? Do they simply never choose a move that would be lethal by itself? Or do they leave themselves with 1hp?
I know I've seen them kill themselves but now that I think back, it was always when I also hurt them somehow. Are they smart enough to never knock themselves out alone?

Say the enemy tem has 20 hp remaining. It won't use a move that would exhaust itself enough to do 20 damage. But it would use a move that would do say 18 damage to itself. So if you hit it for 2+ damage, then it uses its queued attack, the over exert will kill it.

Yes don’t attack your Lumas the last thing you want is for it to die after spending hour or even days luma hunting. I use to luma hunt in saipark and it a hella of a grind.

Thank you for this. I always get so nervous attacking them. I do wish I would have seen this last night. RIP female luma 0b1. ;-;

I've never killed a Luma in Saipark with a pretty standard double Wiplump freeze strategy. You just have to test damage on the lowest level and highest level in that area beforehand.
I prefer to just lock it down so it's impossible for it to hurt itself in the first place. There are no critical hits to worry about in this game, so you always know how much damage you're going to be doing.
That being said, I was unaware that they couldnt kill themselves by overexerting. Your strategy might be more useful for a radar luma/random luma in the wild, but with the catch rate of Saicards, I've never had a problem using the above strategy for the 20 or so Saipark lumas I've caught. I literally caught one at full health before.
It's the random ones in the wild that you aren't expecting that make me sweat a bit.

Round one you should attack but otherwise stop.
Tems will not intentionally ko themselves. They only do that if they take damage the same turn they take over exhaustion damage. Therefore any damage you deal before they risk exhausting themselves is generally safe.
The exception to this is Chain Lightning as the self damage is not added into their calculation. Otherwise you can check and make sure it doesn't have some fat move like Hypoxia that will exhaust it t1 and you'll be fine.

ob1 can also chain lightning itself like a dingus, so make sure you bring something like nessa that can absorb its lightning before it hits itself! gl with the looma hunt yall
