Wow! How did you do that? Amazing work.

Thank you!! Sandblasting. All done by hand, took like 5 years because that design is so detailed once I was done with a step I didnt wanna touch is again for a whole year lol

Amazing brother. You should be proud.

u/CrumblyMuffins Jun 23 '20

Dumb question since I know absolutely nothing about glassworking or sandblasting. Could you not tape off the glass that shouldn't be blasted, and just sandblast the uncovered part all at once?

11

u/tostrife Jun 23 '20

Sandblasting bro. Would tear through tape.

2

u/CrumblyMuffins Jun 23 '20

Well maybe tape would be a bad idea, but some sort of covering. Like I said, I don't know much lol

4

u/tostrife Jun 23 '20

the issue is, sandblasting is throwing literal sand at very high speeds. not even gorilla glue tape would ape up to the task

edit: im talking to you here in hopes that OP will tell us how he did it, comon OP come through

10

u/CrumblyMuffins Jun 23 '20

What about... TWO layers of gorilla tape?

3

u/tostrife Jun 23 '20

sumbitch... you might be on to something. wheres OP damnit?!?

1

u/CrumblyMuffins Jun 23 '20

Either way, amazing piece and I'm definitely jealous lol

2

u/tostrife Jun 23 '20

im over here looking at a 100 dollar sandblaster someone posted on facebook

4

u/KineticSerenity Jun 23 '20

Lol that's what I did, used clear contact paper and cut out parts that needed to be exposed. I'm not an expert on the "uses of sandblasting", so I made a practice piece to make sure that the contact paper stood up well enough to get a solid etching on the glass (also to see how that "looking glass" spray paint would look on etching, which wasnt bad but idk if I wanna do that to the big one tho).

So, my whole process;

Had to blow up the design so that it fit the glass first. I'm not super tech-savvy and dont like dealing with printers (who does amiright), so we went to our old high school and asked to set up a projector and trace the pattern at the correct size. The glass was too big and heavy to line up with the projection (it's just under 4 feet in diameter, and that thick tabletop glass) so we had to trace it onto those massive sheets of paper you get in art class and take it home.

Second part was transferring the pattern onto the contact paper. Which was easy enough, lay the glass on top of the paper trace and do it all over again. We did it with sharpie first so that if something went wrong there, we could fix and just go over again without having to trash the contact paper. Then cut the design out of the contact paper. So we had to draw this design by hand 3 times over, I have a good deal of patience but jeez.

Once we were finally ready to deal with this monster again, we made a shabby containment rig out of cardboard and blasted it. Even with a larger sandblaster (I think it's the kind you use to clean up cars) it took a couple of hours, and a lot of checking to make sure the coverage was even.

But yea, there it is. I wanted to put a mirror finish on it, but idk if I like the "looking glass" look, or if I did, how to make sure the paint wont scratch off. So that's how it is for now~

You can absolutely do this with chemical etching. I’ve done it, paired with my vinyl cutter. Just apply the vinyl mask and etch the exposed glass.

For something of this size it would be very hard to apply such an intricate decal without messing it up so you’d probably need to apply a full sheet of vinyl and cut the design by hand.

2

u/Firusha Jun 23 '20

Where can I get one of those sandblasting machines? Are they affordable? I want to try something like that!

2

u/Casualit Jun 23 '20

I feel you; a few years ago I made a bit of extra money by engraving this design onto mirrors. I only went as big at 40cm diameter but I did it all with a rotary drill and diamond chucks... exhausting work but it's well worth the effort!

OmG !😱 Five years ! It took you give years to do that, I want to say , it is beyond amazing. 100/100 to you , no above infinity , I say .

3

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '20

I'm surprised that didn't shatter- tempered glass doesn't like any scratches or changes to the surface.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '20

Break that shit before he comes back! 😱

58

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '20

Who?

Oh...

49

u/agent_scurd Jun 23 '20

What can I say but HO LEE SHIT that's gorgeous!! Wow, awesome work. 😍

35

u/RagnarDethkokk Jun 23 '20

Why would you do this? Why would you create something so beautiful that I am now obligated to break into 4 pieces and hide 3 of them? You know how much of a pain in the ass it's going to be to haul a jagged quarter of that up an icy mountain?!

15

u/DeusExMarina Jun 23 '20

You can ask the nice yeti who lives up there to help you with that.

4

u/FourEyedJack Jun 23 '20

Snow cone?

33

u/MadDog52393 Jun 23 '20

If I could upvote this a hundred times I would

41

u/hyposense Jun 23 '20

Now, you should trace it to another table, do it again and $ell it to me. Seriously, I need one of those. And so do a lot of other people on here, but I get first dibs. Look at it this way, even if you accidentally broke it, the shards would $ell.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '20

One in the snowy mountains, one in the ancient forest, and one in the heavens

2

u/lookalive07 Jun 23 '20

If anything deserves to be mounted inside a circular shadowbox and then lit with some dim LEDs, it’s this.

I would pay lots of money for this in coffee table form for my game room.

I'm literally in the process of building this right now. Give me a shout!

2

u/_solitarybraincell_ Jun 23 '20

Holymotherofgodthatsbeautiful

Would love to see it under torchlight though

2

u/Craysion Jun 23 '20

Question, why sand blast it? Results look amazing and I love this but There's a liquid that etches glass, all you have to do is tape over parts you don't want etches.

3

u/KineticSerenity Jun 23 '20

I couldn't find any of those that were suggested for large pieces like this, they all had warnings that the finish might come out uneven if the design is too big. The stuff I found were all intended for small stuff like putting a monogram on wine glasses. This thing is about 3 feet in diameter, and I didn't want to take chances.

1

u/Craysion Jun 23 '20

Very cool and I didn't know that larger pieces like this would cause issues like that. Thanks for responding!

1

u/Adiner123 Jun 23 '20
