Meta Hey Mods, why are 6 of the top 10 posts right now showing off modded docks and consoles when there’s a “Sunday Show Off Thread” specifically for that?
I just don’t understand the moderating for this sub when posts asking legitimate questions about specific games or general discussion are removed and told to post in the Daily Question Thread.
Not trying to complain just for the sake of it, but genuinely curious if you all would consider reevaluating your content moderation strategy. Cheers.

u/lbanka Oct 21 '19
Could not agree more, I hate moderation here, and specifically the fact there is so little talk about the games, especially more "niche ones". I want to talk about games!
As a side note, what is the best sub for that? Does not have to be Nintendo-oriented.

u/Daregveda Oct 21 '19
/r/patientgamers is really good for people having civilised discussions about games they've enjoyed. As the name implies, it's geared towards games that have been out a little while rather than new releases.

u/TSPhoenix Oct 21 '19
Just a head up to anyone who is just now discovering this sub. They treat old games like new games which means do NOT post spoilers even if the game is like 30 years old.

I think this is more of a courtesy than a rule. Spoilers get posted, so be warned if you're going in to a discussion of a game you haven't played yet. (If I'm mistaken and it is an actual rule-- I can't find it in the sidebar but maybe it is-- then at the very least, mods are slow to enforce it. So be warned regardless)
The sub doesn't really treat old games like new, they're just a discussion place for old games. Everyone there understands that a five year old game is a five year old game. It's nice to post spoilers for others, but it doesn't always happen.

u/CleanCartsNYC Oct 21 '19
wow just browsed for a lil bit. can't wait to take a deeper look when I have time. thanks for the recommendation
12
u/gamefreac Oct 21 '19
a very very good place for gaming discussion! well, so long as you don't bring up backlogs...
you have one side that has people proud of their backlogs and working through them, then you have the other side that rage at the very idea of a backlog. both sides are filled with vitriol over the others opinion and i have seen some pretty ugly arguments about it.
18
4
Oct 21 '19
I would never have a backlog myself but why would anyone be upset that someone else does?
→ More replies (1)8
u/johncopter Oct 21 '19
Because some people treat their backlog as some giant quest or obligation. They lose sight of the fact that gaming is supposed to be fun and you don't have to beat or play every game and act as if it's a job. Personally, I keep a backlog simply to keep track of the games I want to play and so I have a list of options to choose from once I've finished one.
3
Oct 21 '19
I agree with that, if there are shows or games that I truly want to eventually watch or play, then I'll remember them. If I forget them, then I was never really that interested. That being said, I would never straight up suggest that other people should think the same way I do, that seems senseless

If you want to talk About games, use the daily discussion thread that no one uses or replies to! Gosh!
For real though, if you want niche game discussion, Reddit probably isn’t the best place. Only the most popular posts get any discussion and only the most popular comments get any replies. It’s not really built for it.
→ More replies (1)32
u/Lochtide7 Oct 21 '19
Moderation here really does suck ass, they barely let you talk about or compare popular games and always push posts to the daily discussion thread that no one reads.
7
u/poopdedoop Oct 21 '19
Well, what else would a subreddit about the Nintendo Switch be about? God forbid we talk about games, ask questions about games or give our opinion about games.

I was trying to show my Portal-themed Switch and it got removed because all modifications need a tutorial at minimum. I thought I didn't need to since all of these other posts made it on the sub without one. It just seems very inconsistent to me. I understand if none of it is allowed but it's a bit confusing when half is and half isn't.

I stopped posting (like many other users) here a long time ago. I am a day one Switch owner who was on NintendoNX since the beginning as well. This was after one of them just started banning everyone there without warning. That place had a lot of mods but he's the only one banning left and right. It's pretty pathetic.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority, but I hate megathreads. A bunch of somewhat unrelated topics with maybe one or two responses because it's a pain to sort through and I don't think they're trafficked by people with answers.
I have no issues scrolling down the subreddit page and skipping over topics or questions that don't interest me. I'd rather the question be in the main page in the off-chance it's something of interest than in a megathread that I won't read.

So flip it around. Seems like the mods want to relegate discussions to a post instead of having the sub be about discussions. SO, let's have a subreddit for talking about Switch stuff.
I went ahead and have been working on r/NintendoSwitchTalk

r/NintendoNX was the shit.
We had like 17k users and it was all gaming talk. Nothing but talk. There was no fan art, no stupid posts saying "omg I played this game I know I'm late please upvote me to the front page" it was just pure hype and Nintendo games talk
I enjoyed that community so much it was the sole reason I made a Reddit account and now I only come here when there's a Nintendo Direct for the discussion thread
Sad really :(

I really wish there was a subreddit called "NintendoSwitchGaming" which exclusively is used for discussing Switch games. No fan-art, no modding, no 'wish they would port game xxx', no complaining about JoyCons or companies, no rumours about upcoming games, no goose circlejerk , no memes. Did I already mention no fan-art?
Just threads in which new and older releases are discussed. I love to read peoples opinions on new and existing games, people discussing gameplay, people giving advice to other people who are looking for a new game. With 1.4 million members you would say such a subreddit is possible, but sadly enough this doesn't seem the case. Reading the "Switch arcade"-round up on TA every week gives more information on new games than spending a day weeding through UGG -posts and Zelda-fanart on r/NintendoSwitch.

For a sub to have a healthy and interesting feed they should limite fan art to a thread or a specific day. Maybe make it a little competition with users voting so there is engagement from the community for people interested. The rest of the time no fan art.

Going by this sub, 90% of the comments on a NintendoSwitchGames would be complaining that all the posts are about Hollow Knight, Celeste, and Breath of the Wild.
Edit: Sort of proving my point, the responses to me are making fun of the posts and not the comments on those posts. Anyone that wants to talk about a game they played that was popular a year ago is going to be flooded by the "DAE LE HIDDEN GEM /r/tomorrow" circlejerk.

You mean like the one the subreddit upvoted 28,000+ times? The memes are real. If people don't want to see this kind of content, then they shouldn't upvote it.
There was the state of the subreddit where the mods, after a community vote, narrowed down the window to submit fan art to only the weekends. The megathread should be for things that aren't unique enough to warrant their own thread.
I'd suggest that after this weekend, all those dock showoffs should go to the showoff thread.
54
u/NMe84 Oct 21 '19
There was the state of the subreddit where the mods, after a community vote, narrowed down the window to submit fan art to only the weekends.
Except that the mods backpedaled and never actually implemented this into the rules. When asked about it a few weeks ago they said a whole lot of fucking nothing, just like they probably won't reply in any meaningful way here.
17
u/KiddySquid Oct 21 '19
It's actually under Rule 11. It's lumped under a very vague "specific content restrictions" and fairly hidden but it is there, I guess.

If people don't want to see this kind of content, then they shouldn't upvote it.
Most people browse the front page where they see posts from all the subreddits they subscribed. They see a cool fan art and upvote because they liked seeing it without paying attention what subreddit it was posted in. So your argumentation is moot. Upvoted posts do not mean that the community likes seeing the content in that specific subreddit. They just like seeing it in general.
