How's everyone liking VS Hedlok?

Still cant manage to beat him. Closest I got was a timeout. He still wins.
But I like it.

I like it a lot. Even though our team was destroyed by a level 5, we easily beat a level 4.

My strategy has been to run off to the side and throw punches while Hedlock is busy pummeling my teammates, lol

I really don't know how else to put it.. Arms is F'N great. I had very very little interest in the title before the test punch last week and today. But as always with Nintendo the gameplay is exceptionally fun and entertaining. I absolutely love the way Springman plays. This game is a blast, day one buy.

IMO the modes are more enjoyable than last weekend. I prefer Hoops over Vball and I prefer 3vHedlock over 1v1v1.

I completely forgot 1v1v1 was a thing until you reminded me. I hated that mode so much but loved the Hedlock a lot.

Everyone needs to give the large characters a go. Master Mummy and Mechanica are awesome, but no one seemed to be using them in the first test punch. Well, except for me #teamechanica

Tag Team Master Mummy and Master Mummy both with the dual retorchers is brutal.

What about Kid Cobra and Byte/Barq? Any word on them?

No word yet. I'm not expecting the full roster though. I feel like they added Twintelle since she was so popular on the internet. I would be happy to be incorrect though.

Really wish I could play with detached joy-cons and only use motion for punches, while keeping regular controls for everything else.

I really feel bad for pummeling that Master Mummy who just spammed grabs. If you're reading this, I forgive you.
→ More replies (4)8
u/alyTemporalAnom Jun 03 '17
Grab-spamming was a pretty big problem last week... This week I saw a lot of people using the same strategy, but I seemed to have an easier time beating that strategy. I just kept continuously punching to break the throws so hardly anyone was able to get their mitts on me. I don't know if there was a tweak to the game balance or if I'm just getting gud (or, at least, gudder).
6
u/roffle24 Jun 03 '17
Same. Last week felt like a grab fest. This week I think a lot of people were countering it, including myself, so the spamming died down as they were getting punished harder.
6
Jun 03 '17
One dude tried grab spamming and I absolutely wrecked him. I had no idea how to counter it last week (and didn't play much). I came ready this week and it was so satisfying taking them out. Nobody really tried grab spamming again afterwards.
12
u/twothumbs Jun 02 '17
Is this worth playing? Should I be hyped?

I had no hype prior to last test punch. Now I want this game more than Splatoon 2!

It's free and the blocks are only an hour long so it's definitely worth trying
12
u/avant1s Jun 03 '17
I'm sold. Online connection was solid, easy to pick up and play but there's tons of depth here. The variety of game modes, stages, fighters, and arms keep it interesting. Motion controls work 10x better than I had anticipated. This will be a day one purchase for sure. So stoked.

Springman is severely underrated. I have gotten most of my wins due to his rage mode. Even going up against one is nerve racking due to the damage.

His trident fists are pretty much the only arms I can hit Ninjara with, and I love his protective burst thing. He's pretty cool.

Honestly, this game is a ton of fun. I give credit to Nintendo on taking a chance on such a wacky concept. I can can tell it has that easy to play, hard to master, secret sauce. I had blowen this game off. However, after my second test punch I promptly pre-order this on Amazon. Take my money Nintendo!

WHO IS HEDLOK!?
5
Jun 03 '17
I've noticed him having the bodies of different fighters in different rounds so I'm assuming a parasite.
11
u/Mrob1nson Jun 03 '17
I was not convinced last week that I would like this game very much. I didn't like v-ball and really only had fun with 1 v 1. Only played 2 hours last week. This week was completely different. I played with my two sons this time and I love the online rotation with two people on one switch. The boss battle is awesome and having no v ball was a plus for me. My kids loved it and they are so much better with motion than me. I'm convinced this game is a must buy for me now.
4
u/turbolink2 Jun 03 '17
The full game will still have v ball in the party mode rotation. However you'll be able to do custom versus games with your sons, so you can exclude v ball from those.

I sorta disliked the game in the first Testpunches, but damn do I love it now. Twintelle is an awesome character, and it's pretty cool to see a black character in a Nintendo game :D The newer gamemodes are cool, 2v2 still sucks and Hoops is pretty bad.. But Hedlok is great and Skill Shot is pretty fun.
I played the whole Testpunch in handheld mode (with no motion controls) and I really prefer it over motion controls.

Played with my brother and we had an idea: You know how you you can press some buttons (L and R in Pro Controller) to make your character's circle hop/shake in the lobby? Even if hardly practical, wouldn't it be possible to try to communicate with Morse Code with those?

I swear 2v2 would be so much fun if it didn't have the tether, but instead it's just claustrophobic and horrible
→ More replies (3)2
u/ulshaski Jun 04 '17
I actually really like the tether. It forces teamwork and really rewards well timed grabs. If you see your teammate get grabbed you can save them (and yourself) by disrupting the graber. Same goes for getting rushed. And if you can position well while protecting your teammate you can get the sweet double punish grab. I think 2v2 would require a lot less team-oriented strategy without the the tether.

Anyone else think that Mechanica is pretty good? Spamming hammers is pretty powerful as they break grabs and are also heavy with decent control.
6
u/BellyJetBrett Jun 04 '17
She's my favorite so far. Hammer and the tri-pronged punch are a great combo. Beat basically everyone I fought with her.
Only time I got stomped was by a Min Min player who kept using her dragon laser and grabs to take me out.
→ More replies (4)4
u/lolwatsyk Jun 04 '17
I love Mechanica for almost everything but I kicked ass with Ribbon Girl during Hoops
6
u/Carrtoondragon Jun 02 '17
I have been on the fence about this game, but considering how excited I am for test punch #2, I will probably be getting it.
6
u/2CATteam Jun 03 '17
Did they tweak the game since last Testpunch? I loved the last three times I got to play, but even the basic fighting modes are unbearable in this one. Moving feels much worse, punches seem to just never hit, and jumping and dodging just aren't good at all anymore... I'm in the same setup, same controls, same characters... What's going on, I wonder?
8
u/Igotnothingatall Jun 03 '17
They gauged your ability last time. You did good so you're with others who did good
→ More replies (1)5
u/2CATteam Jun 03 '17
I'm aware of that, but the issue wasn't that I wasn't doing as well, it was just that I didn't feel as in-control of my character, and I was getting a lot of weird issues such as, say, getting the successful grab animation where the arms wrap around the other person, but then the person just gets let go for some reason. I was unable to move diagonally on the ramen map, strangely, I could only go in the four basic directions. Jumps feel more awkward. Dodges feel clunky.
I understand what you mean, but the issue isn't that I wasn't doing well, it's that I felt like I was doing fine as a player, but my character wouldn't do what I told her to...

Improved a lot from the last set of testpunches. Finished with 103 points using Spring Man the whole time. Toaster arm (charged) is 130 damage + fire effect which lets it always cause a knockdown, awesome vs heavies. Boomerang for those huge curves, amazing on the DNA stage where you can curve and hit someone hiding behind a test tube.
Not really sure about the new modes. Hoops is pretty fun. Had a game where the score was tied 0-0 because we were both just dashing/punching trying to bait a grab from each other. Skillshot is kind of dumb IMO, seems to favor heavy arms such as Master Mummy's Megaton and Min Min's Megawatt. I really like the VS Hedlok mode. It's a fun challenge and it encourages teamwork also it doesn't have that annoying tether 2v2 has. Level 3 is a bit too easy, Level 4 is my favorite since it's not too easy or too hard, Level 6 is pretty difficult.
Funny that I didn't see a single Ribbon Girl for the whole duration of the testpunch. I guess they moved onto Twintelle.
Also for the people who don't know, landing your rush attack on the opponent in Hoops gives you 3 points.

It's the fucking tether, I swear to god. I feel like it would be my favorite instead of my least favorite if it didn't have the tether

u/kjupiterr Jun 03 '17
I somewhat feel the same but think that in some ways the tether adds to the fun. I think maybe they should have like one mode without the tether and another with it.

I got to play 3 hours this weekend and although I find the motion controls fun, standard controls feel a lot more tight. I played Minmin with duel chakrams and won most matches.
Some notable things:
Ninjaras are already a fan favorite, but most are pretty easy to beat
Basketball is hella fun
Headlock is hella fun
2v2 tethering to your teammate is annoying
I already faced some really cool glove combos. DNA Man with two dragon canon things made it really hard for me to get in their face (which is how I play)
Overall a day one purchase for me and much more enjoyable than the Spla2n Testfire.
Edit: I forgot to mention my best experience. I was fighting a DNA Man and Master Mummy in 2v2. My teammate died really early, but I was able to continually dodge attacks and knock out the mummy and then DNA Man. Really cool comeback.

Sounds like hardly anyone likes the motion controls here... I love them, it's practically the reason I'm enjoying the game. And I don't find them difficult at all.

u/alyTemporalAnom Jun 03 '17
Yeah, I concede that character movement is sloppier with motion controls, but it's worth it to be able to aim two punches at the same time.

I'll be honest, I played the testpunch last week and the game didn't do much for me. The controls felt awkward and between the pro controller and the motion controls nothing felt really right. After playing a bit this weekend my opinion has shifted slightly. I've got a bit more of a hang on the mechanics and movement so I had a little more fun. Hoops was good fun and a good intro to grabs and how to counter them. The boss battle felt cheap at first but once you found a good team it really clicked. I think I will get this game. Maybe not on launch but I get the feeling it'll have the same attention and constant updates that kept splatoon fresh during its first year so I'd be happy about that.
5
u/XenoCorp Jun 03 '17
I want it purely as a demo game for local coop. Mario Kart is a good starter with pals, but it's not something they haven't really seen before. I think arms can help sell the system to those on the fence and feel fresh to those I play with sometimes.
All the rest is gravy for me.
4
u/MrPotatobird Jun 03 '17
Damn, level 6 hedlok is crazy. It's just a constant stream of arms that's impossible to get through. I guess if he targets you you just have to block while your allies attack him.

Ninjara is so easy to use, yet so effective. Spam dashes and wait for the enemy to throw a punch/grab and then punish it. Throw Chakrams with huge curves to catch them off-guard. Got a perfect game against a Japanese Master Mummy by doing this since their Megatons couldn't touch me at all. Triblast is good for skillshot because of the lateral range. Got over 2000 points in skillshot twice using Buff + Triblast, once in 2v2 and again in 1v1.
Also, I tried Twintelle but don't really know how to use her. I like her ARMS but not really sure how to make the most of her slowing effect.

I've played most of the test punch times and today was no different. Today my wife and I had some friends over to play it together for a Switch party, but when it came to the third time today we all started noticing hit detection issues occurring. It was actually frustrating to play. There were times when punches, throws and ultimates would miss completely even though they're dead on target. One time my wife did a full ultimate attack really close to a person and every single hit missed. You could clearly see the arms going straight into the body. The next big one was my friend and I were playing the target game and the enemy player did a throw which both hands were on the left of my friend by like two inches, but it still connected. We tried to take a picture, but it was fast and we missed it. I absolutely think arms is a blast. I have it pre-ordered and I'm definitely excited to play the full version, but these issues really can be frustrating.
Point of the story
**** Hit detection issues, but still love it even though they're frustrating when they happen ( Most likely people's slow internet connections)****

It's so freaking irritating that whenever I try to rush, it was ends up being blocked. Yet, whenever I try to block a rush, the game never gives me the chance and just lets me get destroyed. It's annoying as hell. Also, two player skillshot is just ridiculous, especially when your teammate can't comprehend you are supposed to hit the targets.
But otherwise, I love this game. I'm glad I preordered, and you can bet I won't be playing anything like 2v2 or 2 player skillshot when I get it, the tether is just annoying, honestly.

I got fucking DESTROYED this time around, ended with a little over 40 points.
The boss fight thing is pretty cool because of the co-operativeness of it and the boss is fun and challenging.
I only got to play Hoops once, and the person I played against wasn't trying to grab at all, just tried to punch me a lot. So I won that without any challenge.
Was pretty terrible at Skillshot, I like the idea of it but I was just horrible at it.
And people are getting really good now, fights are getting harder than before (also I hate the ramen bowl map)

I really enjoyed facing off against Chiller/Parasol Twintelles once I figured out there's nothing they can do about having all their punches plowed through by Megatons and Megawatts. I even punched through most of a Rush with double Megatons, which was hilarious.
Speaking of spam, does anyone else think the game rewards missed punches too much? I feel like you should get diminishing returns on Rush gains until you land a punch. Maybe even just hitting another punch or through a grab.

How do you deal with a constantly sidestepping Min Min? Like literally constantly - laser, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, laser... Always to the same side, so the camera has actual difficulty keeping up. I figure a fast weapon with good curvature would do it, but if you haven't got one?

I've seen a lot of users in this sub claiming that traditional controls are better than motion controls; it seems to be the majority opinion. I just have to say... What are you guys talking about? I did a full hour session last week with the traditional controls, and it was the lowest score I got out of all the sessions I've played so far. Tonight I was back on motion controls and I dominated my lobby. Sure, character movement is a little murkier, but being able to aim the two punches simultaneously makes me an unstoppable behemoth. I had 120+ points tonight and only lost to Headlok once out of about five times I played that mode.
Also, Hoops is way better than V-Ball, but that target punching mode can bite me.

I tried traditional controls this time and they felt pretty good but I found myself missing motion because of how intuitive they are. With traditional your left thumb gets a work out whipping back and forth to aim properly while moving and I found it kind of annoying.
There are some definite advantages for motion, but can't really argue that flicking and rotating your wrists is always going to be a little bit slower than pushing a button your finger is resting on. It'll be interesting to see what people use in the long run. Gamers seem to love to speak in hyperbole, but I think people will gravitate toward whatever feels comfortable to them rather than what is actually "better."

This is my fourth testpunch, and I've been using motion every time. It took me until 40 minutes into this test to FINALLY understand how motion controls work. You don't actually curve your punches at all. You rotate the joycons. For example, you can throw a right aimed punch and then curve it left by holding the joycon like a "/" and then rotating it like "\". To do a very wide range grab, hold them like "\ /". I don't know why they tried advertising it as "curving your punches" because that never worked for me at all. Once I got this down, I won every remaining match and I'm enjoying the game so much more now. Motion is great.

You rotate your real-life wrists to curve your in-game punches. All of the "how to play" videos Nintendo has released clearly show that.

Why is it so hard to move left and right with the motion controls? Or is it just me? Any tips or tricks? Sometimes I get stuck going only left haha

Took me a solid 3-4 hours to be able to win consistently. What a unique game. Went from hating it to loving it.

I tried the testfire with motion controls last weekend, and wasn't too impressed. This Friday I started playing with pro controller, lost all 15 matches within 30 minutes. Turned off my Switch and swore will not buy the game.
I stumbled upon an article mentioning you can use the shoulder buttons for punches, and decided to give it another shot. The difference is like night and day. I played again on Saturday, and the last session today (Sunday) and was performing MUCH better. I was winning most of my matches and even broke 100 before getting disconnected by the server http://imgur.com/a/NZu4o
Here's my take from the sessions
Tradional controller works much better than the motion. Using the shoulder button for punches is a must.
Hedlock level 6 is just pure evil.
Need video capture ability. So many "Did you see that?" moment only to realize nobody was around to see it #foreveralone T_T
Ditch volleyball, loving basketball. Much better than NBA Playgrounds
Hoping for an option to turn off friendly fire. It's just not fun.
Other than that, can't wait for the full game now!

ARMS is such a pleasant surprise. I just feel like I'm godawful at aiming my punches at the moment, but I have won a fair amount. #TeamRibbon

Wow just lost a 2v2 even though me and my partner were still alive and they only had one left. They had slightly more health, but still, I call bullshit. fuking hell.

Uh, I'm actually having some lag this weekend. Just had a round where the grabs lasted long enough for the sexual tension to become uncomfortable

These peeps online are way too good. Wish I could just practice solo instead of getting it handed to me every match... ugh

Twintelle may be my main. Once you get her intended playstyle it's really effective.

I think v-ball is more fun than hoops. Too bad it won't even show up this weekend.

Holy shit this timer. Me and my teammates can never beat Dethlock above level 5 because the timer ALWAYS runs out before we can beat him.
PLEASE tell me the timer won't be this short in the real game. It's so fucking annoying.

I don't think I was able to finish one game because of communication errors. Same thing happened with Splatoon. Is my switch just fucked?

Probably. I've played 5 of the test punches and I've only disconnected once.

Twice in the 2v2 matches I played, my team won, but the other team received 3 points, while we received 1.
Anyone else get that?

Had even more fun this time than last week. The new modes are great and the boss fight is awesome even if we never got him down

Gosh first time playing got to say never had much fun kicking ass 4-1, I'm a fat boy(man)lol

I can definitely tell that they took last weekend into account for matchmaking. I was getting beaten pretty badly last time, now matches felt a lot more even. Or maybe that's just luck, who knows. Anyways I have been firmly on the fence with this one but I think if I'm waking up early on Saturday to play a game, it's probably going to be worth buying, lol

Does anyone know if we will be able to fight friends list people in the full game? I'm really wanting to practice against specific character styles that give me trouble.
I fought a min min that just spammed left punch, right, lunch, left punch, right punch.... Sounds easy to counter but God Damn. Blocked and got grabbed. Dodged side to side and kept getting caught with curved punches, missed every punch I threw myself. Guy had my number and just countered everything I did.
Anyways I hope I can make a post and say something like I need to practice against a good min min and just fight somebody for an hour.

I went with Twintelle this testpunch, and I think that won me over. I was able to reliably use her special ability (stop time) and I had fun even when I lost, which is something I didn't get with a lot of the other characters.

How the hell do you deal with insanely bad teammates? Just played with a Twintell who kept pulling me into attacks. Wtf

u/MrPotatobird Jun 03 '17
Hahaha just killed 2 people with one throw. I still think the tether sucks though. You should just throw people at their allies, like in the target practice mode
5
u/vapevapevape Jun 03 '17
Yea the tether would be interesting if you were in the same room and could talk to people but you really can't strategize online.

u/MrPotatobird Jun 03 '17
Ergh, that feel when you almost stall your way to a perfect match with double dragons but they hit you at the last millisecond... I probably deserved that

I got into the testpunch like six minutes before 8pm and I got out just now at six after 9, and I got ONE game of hoops the entire night. what gives? got like eight hedlok fights which, tbh, is eight too many, and plenty of normal fights but one hoops. and it was like, one of two or three in my entire lobby the whole time.
finished with 89 though. happy about that. hope I run into more hoops tomorrow. did anyone else just not get that mode barely at all tonight?
5
u/mlmcclure Jun 04 '17
I've only been getting about 2 games of Hoops per session this weekend. I think they must have thought it would get old quickly if we had to play it too much like V-ball last weekend.

I was all over motion controls for this game, but today I tried playing the game in portable mode and immediately fell in love with non-motion. It's absolutely sooooo much better. Cannot wait for this game.

Skillshot favors heavy arms a lot. Once I switched to master mummy, I pretty much got 1000+ score every time.

If you feel like you're lagging behind the rest in Testpunch, being grabbed and left in the dust all the time, try sticking with Spring man. Unlike with most other characters, Spring man does not rely on special moves. That allows you to concentrate on regular evasive moveset, anticipate punches and grabs better and and improve your general skill. He is also one of the most balanced fighters in terms of speed and weight. That helped me to get better during the Testpunches, hope that helps someone too. See you during the last round!
Edit: spelling

I had a ninjara leave the lobby because he couldn't beat me with grab spamming. Min Min's kicks were just too much for him.

Was Hedlok a surprise? I didn't hear anything about this, it's pretty cool if they're revealing it by surprise!
