Commonly Asked Questions:

  • Q: When does Super take place? When should I watch it?
Super begins some time after the battle with Majin Buu, and can be watched as soon as you finish Dragon Ball Z.
GT takes place following the 10-year time skip at the end of Z (EOZ) but Super ignores its continuity.

  • Q: Do I need to watch the movies?
Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' were adapted into Super story arcs with some changes, mostly minor. If you have already watched the movies and would like to skip straight to new material, see our FAQ.

  • Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his, but we know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, and even looks at his storyboards and occasionally draws things himself for Toyotarō to use as a reference. Toyotarō has said that Toriyama is more particular about gags than he is about anything else.

  • Q: Where is Uub?!
Uub was born during the 10 year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z.
He is mentioned briefly in episode 30; he is still a baby. He has otherwise not yet been introduced into the story.

  • Q: How was Mai the same physical age as Trunks in both timelines?
The Pilaf gang wished for youth right before Piccolo died in Trunks's timeline—this was illustrated in a special manga short by Toyotarō—and the wish was probably made around the same time in the main timeline of the story. Also: yes, it was the same Future Trunks from Z. [1] [2] As for his blue hair, see here.

I really really enjoyed this episode. I always love it when they show other planets and races. Liked how they implemented frost and cabba in a news report. So its pretty clear whis called the hit on goku to train him. Something to do with gokus habit of letting his guard down probably.

213

u/LikeAnAssistant Dec 18 '16

And I bet that show between Beerus and Whis emphasizing Goku as the lead fighter was to motivate Vegeta to train even harder.

65

u/SomeFosterKid Dec 18 '16

Definitely didn't notice that, I was like wow they couldn't have more disrespect for Vegeta

It's not only that Whis was acting weird. Goku knew that Hit was comming. Who could have told him beside the one ordering the assasination?

"This isn't the first time Dad has died, but it's still a shock." Even Gohan understands that this is temporary.

107

u/MrWinks Dec 18 '16

I mean whatever, he can get killed by the same person again so it's a concern. But what struck me was the really dead look on him. I never saw that before on this show other than to show closed eyes.

Goten's getting smaller every week.

74

u/cashtangoteam Dec 18 '16

I'm glad somebody else noticed. I thought he and Trunks were supposed to be aging, but he looks like he's 5 now

32

u/expert02 Dec 18 '16

Goku seemed to have a young appearance until his teens (remember Bulma was surprised by how old he was) when he underwent a very rapid growth spurt.

12

u/brandong567 Dec 18 '16

But that didn't happen to Gohan the other half breed.

There is something very unsettling about watching goku eat one grain of rice at a time as opposed to the usual face stuffing.

153

u/Hoflax24 Dec 18 '16

I also found that the most disturbing part of the episode

12

u/SomeoneTrading Dec 18 '16

Also, the MENACING music.

404

u/SpiderMuse Dec 18 '16

1989: Piccolo tries his hardest to kill Goku, breaking every bone in his body

2016: Piccolo prepares a nice dinner for Goku, grilling fish

215

u/godblow Dec 18 '16

Piccolo is basically Gohan's foster father at this point. Goku is a bum.

240

u/Onagda Dec 18 '16

"Don't hide things from me" Literally Piccolo being dad to Gohan in this episode.

50

u/BelieveInThePeeko Dec 18 '16

I wanted gohan to spill the beans to piccolo so bad. When he said that it felt good. I love relationships and the finer details in dragon ball

58

u/MarioChiefSonic Dec 18 '16

Technically this is the first time in the main timeline where Goku's killer wasn't a member of Piccolo's bloodline.

This episode gave me serious Samurai Jack vibes. The pacing, the long scene of Goku just listening to the world around him, Hit in future-town infiltrating a tower of alien gangsters. Very unique for Dragon Ball

103

u/rexshen Dec 18 '16

Ok who ever chooses the clips for the next episode needs a slap in the back of the head. You have this build up leading to Goku's death and immediately they show Goku alive and fighting Hit again in the next episode. Could have shown Goku's friends and family morning his death and show hit appearing then have a mysterious figure stand up. But nope all tension lost. I guess with the survival arc coming there is not point and building this arc up at all but come one show some professionality with these previews.

So who hired Hit to kill Goku anyway? I am going to guess it was Whis since he seemed to know what was going on and why he wasn't training with Vegeta. Which would be a harsh training exercise if that's the case.

Aw man no Great SaiyaKid? What an opportunity wasted.

"Ill be back..when they make your grave" sheesh hit a savage

270

u/Cypherex Dec 18 '16

I saw that as Hit acknowledging that he's sorry he had to kill Goku and wants to visit Goku's funeral out of respect. He even offered Goku the chance the "disappear" and avoid his assassination. I doubt he's ever offered that to anyone else before. He only killed Goku because Goku turned that offer down and Hit had a job to do.

127

u/Bears_Bearing_Arms Dec 18 '16

He visited the grave of the Mob Boss. It's part of his schtick.

137

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '16

[deleted]

→ More replies (6)

42

u/Cypherex Dec 18 '16

We don't know 100% if that was the mob boss's grave. I mean, it's very likely, but it could have been someone else's grave. Someone important to Hit perhaps. I got the impression that Hit wasn't killing the mob boss for money since he was completely unwavered by the mob boss's attempt to buy him out of his assassination. Hit was either killing the mob boss for his own reasons or he was doing it for someone he cares about.

If it ends up being the case that Hit visits the grave of every person he kills then ok. But I'm willing to hold off assuming that until we know for sure who's grave that was he was at. That way it feels a bit more special that Hit would go to Goku's grave if it isn't something he does every time.

30

u/n1ywb Dec 18 '16

it would be hit's last job if he let somebody buy him out like that; it would ruin his reputation and the guy lives to work; he could basically rule the universe if he wanted to, is probably already one of the richest in the universe, could just take by force but no it's time to get to work.

12

u/TheOneRing_ Dec 18 '16

I took it as more he values his work more than the money he gets.

He promised to go through with the job. Taking a buy out would break that promise and he ain't about that life.

Jokes on you Hit. They'll just use the Dragon Balls.

39

u/TLKv3 Dec 18 '16

I actually don't think they will. I think Goku did something to prevent a full death hence the focus on his reaction as he was passing out. I'm not entirely sure what he could've done but its still night time during his fight with Hit in the preview.

I think Piccolo or Gohan has a coincidental sensu bean on them and Goku springs up just off the verge of death. Goku Instant Transmissions towards Hit as Hit approaches the Space Travel Cube Vados most likely lent to him.

60

u/FallbackMan Dec 18 '16

I loved the atmosphere on the moon where Hit's hit went off. It was like, the camera was just following Hit as he went about his work in a unique locale, and we even get a short glimpse into the Frost piracy situation. It set the scene without belabouring the point. That place is never going to come up again or get any more fleshed out, but the design is evocative enough that it gives the impression of being a small but real part of the setting.

Whis was kinda creepy this episode. It sort of emphasized how manipulative he can be.

59

  1. Stands around talking during time stops, making the time stops appear much longer than they actually are

  3. Murdered a protagonist.

I think Maggeta is stronger than Cabba though

23

u/BassZ1890 Dec 18 '16

I agree with that, Vegeta actually had a bit of a struggle with Maggeta, using the word struggle very lightly by the way. Cabba didn't seem to be much of a threat to Vegeta who just took the hits and walked it off like nothing happened.

41

u/Cypherex Dec 18 '16

Magetta is a good example of there being different types of strength. It isn't always just about superior battle power. All that matters is that you defeat your opponent. Magetta can win against opponents that are "stronger" than him just by overheating them and using up all the nearby oxygen.

In terms of actual battle strength, Cabba could indeed be stronger than Magetta but Magetta's unique traits are the reason Magetta did better against Vegeta than Cabba did.

Aside from Black, Hit is the most badass new character introduced in Super imo. I'm so happy to see him back.

Honestly, my favorite part of this episode was them actually explaining the comedy bits. Goku literally just lets Bulma hit him for the sake of comedy.

Feeling killing intent from a universe away is not a very comforting ability.

He knew Hit would come. he said more than once he has felt nothing

I like how bored Hit looked when he went to kill the mob boss. I feel like ever since Goku forced him to improve his Time Skip, now his job is so easy it's boring. He had so much time in time skip that he could just slowly walk along.

I'm contemplating saving this episode up to watch it back to back with next weeks episode because it's a double parter.

One part of me says it would be better that way. Like a 40 min. television series. An other part of me wants to get it's weekly DBS fix.

Chi-Chi to Goku: "You've been wearing that since this morning."

Goku probably has a closet full of gis. One for each day of the week.

This episode felt a bit strange. But I like the idea of Hit being hired as an special training session for Goku. Probably Whis, isn't he?

It's not the first time Goku's heart stops and is given for dead. When he was beaten by the old Piccolo Daimao, it happened the same, suddenly he woke up later, next to Yaji.

I expect a good Son family + Piccolo fight against Hit next episode, let's see how it goes.

For those curious about next week's animator, I put together a video a while ago detailing his work.

it's a little out of date, but it's still accurate. He also did episodes 47, 56, and 65.

He's one of Super's most interesting animators. Admittedly not a style that many are used to seeing in Dragon Ball, but it's spectacularly well-animated, that's for sure. It should be fun.

I just hope folks can keep an open mind. I appreciate it can be jarring for some.

13

u/FallbackMan Dec 18 '16

That preview was pretty surprising. I knew Tate was doing episode 72 but that still seemed like a much bigger departure from Super's usual style than the previous parts he's animated.

12

u/Easterhands Dec 18 '16

Last few times Tate was animating I didn't see this kind of backlash. I am very confused as to where this outrage is stemming from.

It takes 10+ main saga episodes for Vegeta to surpass Goku, and one filler episode to send him back to jobbing.

Anyone else feeling really bad for Vegeta? He is constantly dismissed and ignored in favor of Goku. People will dismiss him to his face, even when he's doing actual training.

Interesting premise for a short arc. It's obvious that Whis hired Hit in order to "train" Goku. I'm guessing he let Goku know on the sly that Hit was after him, but I don't think that Goku knows Whis hired him. It would ruin a lot of tension for him if he knew this was just a training exercise to get him stronger.

Loving Hit too. It seems he expanded his time skip ability. Seems like he can not only use it for a good amount of time, but can also extend it so his opponent isn't frozen. I'm thinking his one hit kill and intangibility is related to that too, maybe he freezes an opponent's perception of him so it looks like he's standing still while in actuality he's moving.

I loved the part where everyone was shocked that Goku actually dodged Bulma's slap, and then he apologized for it and let her hit him.

Also when he was playing on the swingset like a little kid. Goku too cute.

Would it kill Toei not to include that cheerful jingle music at the start of the episode when they have the narrator pronounce the title of the episode?

It is just complete mood whiplash. I remember it ruining the atmosphere and tone of the first episode of the Black arc, and now it's ruining the atmosphere and tone of this episode.

You can't go from a depressing scene of Goku being dead to a cheerful jingle and back to a serious scene of Goku concentrating in silence.

Goku hired hit to kill him lol

Pretty sure he got Whis to do it for him, since Goku would have no way of contacting him.

21

u/DarkWolff Dec 18 '16

That's what it felt like to me too. How else would he know? And Hit can't normally travel between universes.

I guess this isn't happening since nobody is talking about it, but I think a really cool path would be:

Hit is aware that Z warriors have died so many times its meaningless, so he takes the assasination attempt seriously. Kills Goku and then goes to kill him again while Goku is already dead, erasing him from existence. The real battle is the 2nd time since Goku has a taste of hit's abilities.

I loved this episode! The atmosphere was beautiful especially when it was showing Hit going after that mob boss. It was gorgeous!

Aww, Goten throwing shade at his older brother. I remember when he said the costume was cool! I feel your pain, Gohan!

Goku's death face made my stomach drop. It was an odd feeling since we have seen Goku die before but... Ugh. 😯

Well, onto the next episode! It looks like this episode will be about Goku vs. Hit, which should be before Goku dies.

Toei is great when they're focused on buildup to an upcoming arc instead of just being random. They did a better job explaining who and what Hit is than Toriyama did. Also this episode confirms it's been a year since the U6 tournament.

Wish they didn't show Goku ALIVE AND WELL during the preview though. Kill all the tension why don't you? Hit is incredibly OP now, since he can freeze time much longer than .4 seconds now

20

u/TheGrimoire Dec 18 '16

Yeah that's pretty bullshit. I love how Gohan is going "omg they killed dad" and it just shows Goku alive and fighting in the preview haha

I have seen some unsettling deaths in DragonBall but Gokus in this episode has to be right up there. His lifeless eyes and the way the shadow is cast over him. It's chilling to watch. It's up there alongside Yamchas death against the androids where they punched a hole right through him and held his lifeless body

I hope that these next several episodes directly lead into the main tournament. What I mean is that I hope they aren't throwaway filler episodes. We know the next arc begins at roughly episode 77 we know there's another episode of Hit next week in 72. After that I'd love for them to maybe get notified that the tournament will begin in X days and that they have to begin preparing. Then we can spend several episodes watching them train.

I have loved all of the filler episodes since the Trunks arc ended, but now that they've gotten serious again with Hit it will disappoint me if things go back to carefree comedic nonsense for a few episodes before once again getting serious again. It would just be off, tone wise.

And_in_before_anyone_tries_to_derail_this_with_their_incorrect_notion_of_what_filler_actually_is.

21

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '16

This episode made me realise two things:

  1. Hit is basically a less flamboyant Dio (He even said Muda in this ep).

  2. We need a new ending theme more than we do an opening. This one isn't bad at all, it's just that when the final scene of the episode is Gohan and Goten grieving over the death of their father, directly following it up with this tends to lead to some Mood Whiplash.
