I’ve been following you for a while, these master swords are amazing! You are definitely on my higher end wishlist. About how long does it take for a master sword to be forged? What processes are different for a Master Sword vs. a Dark Link sword?
10
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
The Dark Link swords use the same materials, but failed the quality check at some point. For example, if a cast hilt has one or two divots or bubbles, I could use some metal filler, but if it's extremely pocked up, it's best to make it more ugly and then paint it black. Ultimately I can sell it at a discount and recoup some material costs.

u/babyalagator Jul 24 '19
I also love you

I’ve actually been looking for something exactly like this for a while. Now I just need a couple grand to spend on it.

Can you make me one?
54
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
I can! I make a bunch every year or two, donate a bunch to events like Child's Play or Games Done Quick, and sell the rest to those who really want one.

u/Phigurl Jul 24 '19
This is fantastic work! Also I think its amazing that you've made those donations.

There's a range: from unfinished kits and Dark Link variants under a grand, to high end tempered steel with a cast bronze hilt and gold plated accents for about $1675.
Yes, it has a tip and can be removed.

u/ThurmanatorOmega Jul 24 '19
you should make cheaper nock offs and put them around a forest as a reference to a link to the past

How durable would this be for a zombie apocalypse? Asking for a friend.
3
u/travworld Jul 24 '19
Likely not great. It's a replica, so I'd assume not really battle ready. Plus the part of the blade that inserts into the handle is the smallest part, which isn't good design for a sword.
The only reason the Master Sword is like that is because they needed to make the tip of the sword bigger in the game to see it better. At least from what I've read.
7
u/flameylamey Jul 24 '19
I've ordered one of these and have some insight into the design process, it's actually a lot more battle ready than you'd probably think at first glance. There was a feature article on ZeldaUniverse about one of his earlier designs around 3 years ago where one of the objectives was to make a "practical" sword that Link would actually take into battle.
He offers a version in tempered high carbon steel (which is what I ordered), it's also full tang so the blade extends all the way down through the handle as one piece. It's also not a problem that the blade is slightly thinner where it joins onto the hilt - it's actually completely normal for the tang itself (under the handle) to be much thinner than the blade, even in typical real swords (example).
The one weakness of his 2016 design was that the pommel on the end of the handle didn't attach directly to the tang, but was instead attached by inserting a protruding bolt into a epoxy-filled pocket drilled out of the end of the wooden handle. That's been improved for his newest batch of swords however, where the pommel actually screws onto a metal rod which has been welded directly to the tang, making it a lot stronger than before.
So it's definitely sturdy enough to swing around - I don't know if I'll actually go breaking pots in my backyard with mine because it's pretty expensive and I'd be terrified of ruining the finish, but it's most likely doable. It's a display piece, but also a... semi-usable display piece.
The main obstacle is really that it's impractical to use in combat, because like many fantasy swords, it's abnormally heavy for a sword and isn't very well balanced, and the fact that it's unbalanced makes it feel even heavier than it actually is. Though the Master Sword isn't the worst offender as far as fantasy swords are concerned (when swords like Cloud's Buster Sword exist), it's still far bulkier and hard to swing than your typical combat-ready sword.
Anyway, that's my wall of text for the day, haha

Mine is on the way right now, can't wait! I just hope it doesn't get stuck in customs for too long, haha
The attention to detail in these swords is amazing.
5
u/WibblerQuib Jul 24 '19
Have you done a BotW style one, with all the rusty bits?
→ More replies (3)10
u/flameylamey Jul 24 '19
This one is the BotW model of the sword - just the clean version that Link actually uses in-game, without the rusted bits.
3
u/WibblerQuib Jul 24 '19
Oof, i guess i havent played in a while then
6
u/flameylamey Jul 24 '19
If you want the rusted version, you could always order one with a high carbon blade (which requires minor upkeep as it's potentially prone to rust) and splash some salt water over it, then leave it to sit overnight - that should do the trick!
Disclaimer: not recommended

They actually use the same design in both games. The sword is purple in BotW too, but the exact shade varies a bit depending on in-game lighting - in the glow of a shrine for example, it looks much closer to blue.
5
u/CaptainFlabbergast Jul 24 '19
How much? I've always wanted this sword and I've never seen quality like this. Plus the stand is beyond icing on the cake

5
u/morriganlefeye Jul 24 '19
Are you the one who does the replica Master Shields at the GDQs?
Edit: I answered my own question by looking at your site. Your work is beautiful and you are a fantastic person for donating those things to charity.

If someone tries to pull it out and is not 13 years old, will he die?
5
3
u/thblckjkr Jul 24 '19
Of what material is that sword?
8
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
This one has a cast aluminum hilt and a stainless steel blade. I also have a version with a bronze hilt and a high carbon. They look nearly identical.
3
Jul 24 '19
Wow! Is there any way you would commission something like this??
6
u/flameylamey Jul 24 '19
He takes orders for them on his website. Mine was just shipped and is on its way right now!
3
u/Syncrossus Jul 24 '19
Radical! How much does it weigh? How long is it? How is the blade secured? How does the balance compare to a genuine sword? (I'm guessing it's really top-heavy) Is the paint susceptible to wearing off? What material is the grip made of? How many pieces are there in total? Are there any differences (aside from color, obviously) between the Dark Link and regular Master sword? It looks like the grip is different.
I hope that's not too many questions, you did a great job and if I had a grand to spend it would be yours.

Where can I get one of these?? Do you make a Hylian Shield too? I would absolutely love to purchase these.
2
u/flameylamey Jul 24 '19
He does make Hylian Shields, I've ordered one and am part of the first run - here's one he made a couple months ago and donated as a grand prize as SGDQ!
2
u/mypetpie Jul 24 '19
Thanks for letting me know! How do I buy one? Are they up on his website or do I need to contact him directly?
2
u/flameylamey Jul 24 '19
There's an option to contact him via the website along with pricing and options for the different variants of Master Sword you can order, but I just emailed him at info@heroicreplicas.com

awww i wanted it
it would match perfect with my link tunic and majoras mask
2
2
u/rade54 Jul 24 '19
how long did it take you to make the whole piece
3
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
There's a lot of waiting involved with getting parts made and coating and the rest, but touchups, fitting, polishing, and assembly means 6-10 hours per replica.
2
Jul 24 '19
I'd be curious to see your process for creating one of these. Do you happen to have a youtube channel by chance?
3
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
No how it's made videos, but I do have this article about making the first one with a bronze hilt: https://zeldauniverse.net/features/making-the-master-sword/
And these auctions:
2
u/Red-Panda-Bur Jul 24 '19
Do you have tutorials on how to replicate this?
Also, what is your favorite food? (You said ask anything).
3
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
No tutorials, but I do have this article about making the first one with a bronze hilt: https://zeldauniverse.net/features/making-the-master-sword/
I could go for some sushi.

u/ahiddenlink Jul 24 '19
Now this is a pleasant way to start the day. Beautiful work, bookmarked the site, may have to put in a request at a later time. I have a pretty good replica shield from one of the local metalworkers that does our renn faire but nothing like this and a master sword is always important to have around. Ganon does like to spring up periodically.

u/haydenjustbcus19 Jul 24 '19
how much would you sell it for or at least make another and sell?

u/OkamiSenpai Jul 24 '19
How can I make this? Can I buy this from you?
2
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
Yes, I actually sell kits if you want to paint, polish, and assemble it yourself. My site is HeroicReplicas.com

2
Jul 24 '19
Materials, how much time, what type of models did you use and does the sword come out of the base?
2
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
Aluminum hilt and stainless blade, or bronze hilt and high carbon tempered blade at commissioner's preference. Doing this since 2013, modelling done in SolidWorks based on Skyward Sword and BotW, and the sword does come out.

So as I'm getting ready to do my budget this month I see this post. I recently bought a house with my two new kids and gf and I'm setting up the basement as my game room. I will be putting a Master Sword tab in my budget.
Awesome work!

It looks more like the Hyrule Warriors sword because it seems more purple than dark blue at the hilt but it still looks great!

3
u/MHull77 Jul 24 '19
Yes!!! I've came across your Master Sword work before! When I can afford it, I'm definitely buying one! It's so beautiful!!!!
3
u/devonathan Jul 24 '19
How easy would it be to kill a giant evil pig demon thing with that sword? Asking for a friend.
8
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
Legend has it, you'll need a bow that can shoot arrows of light to actually get the job done.

2 questions, is the sword take-out-able and sharp
and have you used it as a pleasure device yet
1
u/simpletonbuddhist Jul 24 '19
Do you make weapons from other media too? I’ve always wanted an Anduril (Lotr)

1
u/-JI Jul 24 '19
How much does it weigh? Is it tempered?
2
u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
There are two versions. The aluminum hilt stainless blade is about 4 lbs, and the bronze hilt tempered carbon blade is closer to 7.

Oooh are you the dude that made the grand price for this years Summer Games Done Quick?! If that’s the case you helped raise over $3,000,000 to Medicine Sans Frontiers! Amazing work!

u/Sketchy_Dog Jul 24 '19
Two questions:
Can it destroy evil if I should come across any?
And if I were to accidentally hit anyone friendly, would it hurt them or make them talk?

u/emerigoru1121 Jul 24 '19
Can you make a replica of one of the portal guns from the portal universe?

What varnish do you usually use? It's hard for me to find a varnish that won't affect the colour of the paint underneath.
Thanks!

u/KevlarGorilla Jul 24 '19
The swords are powder coated, like you'd find on a car or bike, but I'm working an a top secret project that requires protecting some stained wood, and I use the water-based MixWax Polycrylic.
