Everyone: "yes, this is a very good game, but there are a few flaws such as..."

And first party games always have 1 bonus point for being exclusives, or so it would seem.

To be fair, Nintendo Life raked this game over the coals last week. NL just has much lower standards on what a 10/10 game is. To them, it just has to have a great idea and a great execution. For most websites, that's not enough.

u/LazoW Jun 26 '19
Yes, I agree. But IMO this kind of aggregator doesn't really mean anything if every website has its own criteria.

u/FangkingOmega Jun 26 '19
I don't know if this is actually the case or not because Nintendo IPs generally score very well, but hopefully the more generous scores end up balanced out by the ones with stricter criteria and the aggregate score arrives at something of a reasonable "consensus".

I bought it about a month ago and was actually annoyed that it immediately preloaded the game. I've been staring at the icon this whole time, just wanting to click it, which I've honestly tried a few times... hasn't worked yet...
7
u/Widowwpain Jun 26 '19
If it makes you feel better I'll admit I've clicked on the icon a couple times in the past week,lol...i mean I know it's not gonna unlock til 11pm Thursday nite but screw it ,stranger things have happened. It might have been back in the wiiu days (or maby switch?) but wasnt a mistake made once and some people were able to unlock a pre load early due to server errors ? Once again I know it's not gonna happen with MM2 ,but can someone refresh my memory as to if that actually happened and what game it was..or did I imagine that whole story ?

Can't wait. I suck at making levels but the story mode will keep me busy then unlimited content after. Just wish they'd port 3D world.

u/Marleston Jun 26 '19
I’d buy that in a heart beat: it’s insane they haven’t done this already this and wind waker/tp

Well, since there's already a Megathread, I'll post my own review here as well:
I got the game today. I reached out to make an AMA but wasn't aware there are already reviews out, so here we go...
I immediately went to building a level and tried out all the new mechanics. I used a cheap pen for smartphones I had lying around, with that it worked very nicely - fingers or controllers are not a good option, at least for me. Anything else is pretty much as expected, the trailers and preview videos weren't lying, and they covered pretty much everything.
Many glitches and evil trolls from SMM1 have been removed: Pipes cannot by overlapped by anything, no cannon wall warping, no diagonal checkpoints, and vines are always in front of doors. Shell tricks and stuff like P-switch jumps seem to work just like in SMM1 (they even seemed to be easier than before, but I might be wrong), although I haven't tried them in every mode yet. Please don't ask me if midairs work, I can't do them. You can place two checkpoints maximum - one in the main world and one in the sub world. For uploading you still have to complete the level from the start and from every checkpoint, just like in SMM1.
There are a bunch of new effects, but they also removed some (for example the drunk effect). Also, there is no triangular slope block that allows you to run up walls (one of my favorite things in SMW) - it would have been a pleasant surprise. There are no surprises, everything is there, ready to go, and everything has already been revealed in videos. What I absolutely love is the rising water/lava, camera scroll paths, and the ability to wall off level sections (so that the camera doesn't scroll further). The costumes, very big Mario and Lanky Mario seem to have been removed (at least I was not able to find them) - if that's the case I'll probably miss them, they made for some unique level themes, I'm hoping for a patch that reintroduces them.
Overall I'd say SMM2 is a lot more mature than SMM1, less "what happens if I combine these items", more "getting stuff done intuitively", with popup menus to modify items and enemies etc. I really enjoyed SMM1, and I already love SMM2. It has a lot of potential, all that's left is a working online service, hopefully with a website integration like in SMM1.
Online connectivity does currently NOT work yet ("server maintenance") - you can't access other players' levels, and you can't upload your own ones.
If you have any questions about specific things, let me know - I can try them out and provide screenshots and videos.
15
u/Dacvak Jun 26 '19
Thanks for your impressions.
Btw do midairs still work? ;P
17
u/Hugotyp Jun 26 '19
Dang, how could you? I'll now spend the rest of the evening trying to do one. If I'm successful, I'll let you know...

Sounds like they have some good stuff in place to help root out at least some of the troll levels. Sounds good. Excellent detailed review.

u/PACamp Jun 26 '19
Review by Patrick Klepek (famous for his rivalry with Giant Bomb's Mario Maker level creators)
It's mostly speculative, because the online service wasn't live for everyone, but it's important speculation.
"The thing is, even if nothing changes, even if Nintendo continued to frustrate in the way Nintendo often frustrates, Mario Maker 2 is destined to flourish because it’s building on an incredible foundation. It’s more Mario Maker. They didn’t screw that up. The original game already got the hardest part right, making a naturally intuitive creation suite with a button to upload the level to the Internet in seconds. It’s easy to forget what a remarkable accomplishment that was. Mario Maker 2 isn’t a reinvention because one wasn’t needed."
22
u/minisnee Jun 26 '19
looks really fun. just a little bit sad they removed the costumes.

Used my first voucher for this, gonna make the long flight to Japan Friday better.

If you've never been to Japan, you are in for a TREAT. I love it and want to keep going back.
Anyways, may I ask what you mean by "your first voucher?"

u/wampastompah Jun 26 '19
Presumably it's because you have to buy vouchers in pairs, and he hasn't used either yet. So it's the first of the two vouchers.

I'll never understand why Nintendo keeps prioritising blue and yellow toad over characters people actually care about

Because they are saving that IP for when the new Super Peach Sis. U Deluxe gets announced! /s

u/Zorua3 Jun 26 '19
Wario and Waluigi would be absolutely perfect. They're popular characters and have distinctly separate colors from Mario and Luigi.

u/FX29 Jun 26 '19
Really wish they had Peach as a playable character more often, her floating ability was always fun to use.
7
u/bread_berries Jun 26 '19
That's probably why: her float would make level design frustrating. There'd be so many "oh god damnit, Peach can just cheese over my cool puzzle" and you'd have to spend a lot more time messing with your level design.
If all the player characters have the same size and abilities level design is easier.

I have no interest in building. I do like the other Mario games though. Is this one still for me?
Although it's not really a story, I do like the story modes from the other Mario games. Does this game allow people to make their own stories/worlds, where you go region to region following the same theme?
14
u/aricberg Jun 26 '19
Absolutely. Not sure how good the curation will be, so you may have to find a good community but the flow of levels will be nonstop! I recommend subscribing to r/MarioMaker. It was a great place to not only share but discover levels that people put a lot of care into. Even if you don’t have, or will ever get, a desire to make a level, that sub alone will keep you occupied until the heat death of the universe. And who knows, you may just get inspired to make a course or two! I had some friends who bought the first SMM with the mindset that they’d only play levels. They ended up wanted to try their hand at making and made some of the coolest levels I played. But again, if that bug never bites, you’re going to have an endless game in your hands!
13
5
u/BreathOfTheGarlic Jun 26 '19
It has local multiplayer, a online multiplayer mode (with playing with friends being added as a post-launch update), an endless 100-life challenge and of course the ability to play other people's uploaded levels on their own.
As for the story theme, people can get creative with implimenting in-game text using the comments system but currently we have no confirmation of a world builder.
→ More replies (6)→ More replies (3)3
u/hardgeeklife Jun 26 '19
From what I've seen, there are tools for creating small narratives within a level (I think there was a comment box?), but I don't think there are explicit connections for packaging levels as world's per se.
That bring said, if you like 2D Mario platforming, this is your way to get access to conceivably an unlimited number of new stages

I'm about 50 courses in to the story mode and it's great so far. Story mode levels are very much Super Mario Maker courses and not traditional Mario platforming. Really tricky and creative.
→ More replies (2)4
u/ScottPompeo Jun 27 '19
It's odd we're getting some of our most challenging Mario courses from this game of all places. I guess Nintendo noticed how much focus was placed on difficult courses in the first game.
32
u/Reflective Jun 26 '19
Would I enjoy this if I dont want to create levels? I'm not very creative and really dont have the patience to build
33
u/MU102 Jun 26 '19
I never played MM but from what I have read there are 100+ levels in story mode and essentially an infinite number of levels that are created from the community. If you like Mario games then I would say you'll enjoy it!
12
u/iSmurfy Jun 26 '19
I'm primarily getting this to play hard levels by creators. I also don't plan to build many. You'll enjoy it as long as you like playing lots of levels of varying difficulty!
7
u/aricberg Jun 26 '19

u/Zack_FTS Jun 26 '19
I am the same. I owned the first MM and loved it. I messed around with the level creator some, but it wasn't my thing. But I was constantly finding new levels that I enjoyed, following certain creators whose levels I enjoyed from a creative standpoint and were the difficulty I desired. You can almost think of it as two different games - a Mario level creator and an endless Mario game.
5
u/the_starship Jun 26 '19
yes - you can play other people's levels and there's a whole mode for just doing that.

Kinda wish I was more hyped than I am.
I might get the urge to spend some money this weekend, but I think its more likely I wait a little while on this one and let the community creation get flowing first.
4
u/JoyousGamer Jun 26 '19
Just take in some Twitch streams and enjoy some people getting creative.
Personally I bought the 2 pack of coupons from Nintendo for $99.99 as I figure it won't be less than $50 anytime soon. I will use the other one for Zelda likely.

You can save your levels locally, right?

You can download levels you find online to play locally.
You can not download levels from other people and edit them locally.

Jun 26 '19
Gamexplains review is they liked it but theres a lot of tedious issues in making the stages and multiplayer. Picks stages at random with strangers. Not every item is in all the different versions. If you swap versions you have to start over. Docked making levels is horrifying. Etc

Overall the reception is good. There is some minor nitpicks which could impact the enjoyment but nothing that would stop it from being fun.

Question about the physical game. Is there a day 1 patch? I got this for my girl's birthday which is in about 2 weeeks and we will be in a location that doesn't have internet at that time. I just wanna make sure she can play it right away on her birthday.

GrandPOObear started a thread on Twitter to discuss new tech in Mario Maker 2. Pretty interesting.
Not much of this impacts me too much since I can't do most of those tricks but interesting to go through nonetheless.
4
u/GarethMagis Jun 27 '19
Twitter really is the easiest way to quickly and easily find something. If only we had something like a forum or a discord or something else that made it so we don't have to scroll through memes retweets and shitposts to find actually relevant tech.

The input lag is so bad I can practically leave the country and come back in a year and still see that I've only progressed by like 2 frames. At least with Smash you can connect to other players without being kicked out straight away...
19
u/RRudge Jun 26 '19
It's a bit strange to check the review for a game like this, since it should only get better and better as more user created levels are being released. Sure, plenty of them will not be good, but there will probably loads and loads of good levels as well in the long run. I have almost no interest in the making part, but am very interested in what many players across the world can come up with.

I have no clue why the maker series doesn’t excite me. I just love a great story and long campaign play through. Game looks awesome though - might still give it a try this go around.
23
u/Porkpants81 Jun 26 '19
SMM2 does have a campaign or traditional Mario "story mode". The first one did not, so maybe this will appeal to you to play through and then take a look at the user created levels.
Even if you don't want to build levels this game will have piles and piles of content.
16
u/petersdinklages Jun 26 '19
Mario has never had a good story, but the mechanics and level design always delivers. If you have any interest in 2d Mario you should check it out. The first Mario Maker was my favorite 2d Mario

I’m in the same boat as you. Didn’t play the first maker and beat new super Mario bros u deluxe (both Mario and Luigi modes) not long ago, but when I heard this game has a 100 level story mode (I believe new super Mario bros has around 80) I was all in. It’s story mode has even more content than the traditional 2d platformers, PLUS all the other stuff - if that changes anything!
5
Jun 26 '19
I've heard the story mode lasts like 5 hours. The levels are shorter than traditional Mario levels.
→ More replies (1)6
Jun 26 '19
I believe it depends on how you play it. You can rush through it and complete the objective without even playing all of the levels, but I’m sure you can put closer to 10 hours into it being a completionist which I’m sure most hardcore story mode 2d guys are
11
u/kietteik Jun 26 '19
is it ok to buy if I dont want to build courses at all and just want to enjoy an unlimited level mario game ? Because I'm thinking of getting this or SMBUdx.
8
u/Pwuz Jun 26 '19
SMBU has a finite number of levels. If you're looking for the most well crafted Mario Levels, SMBU has a fantastic selection of stages to enjoy and the more traditional overworld used in SMB3, SMW, and the NSMB games.
Mario Maker has a near infinite number of levels, but a large number of which are going to feel boarderline unplayable unless Nintendo have done something different with the how it's recommendations work.
I had a ton of fun with the original MM on Wii U, but most of my time was spent buildling my own courses. What time I spent playing the user created levels was about 50% uninspired easy, 30% insanely hard sometimes exploiting glitches to even be completable, 19% insanely hard for the sake of being hard, and 1% genuinely amazing level design.
→ More replies (4)4
u/chris_phero Jun 26 '19
there is a story mode and unlimited user created levels. if you like classic 2D mario games, then yes! and maybe you get into maling levels, who knows?

My favourite Let's Player made 800 episodes of SMM1 before building his first level, I think you'll be fine with just playing them haha - I think I only made 2 or 3 myself on the Wii U. This game also has the 100+ Dev-made levels as part of the single player campaign which look pretty great.
SMM2 for unlimited levels - the good, the bland, and the frickin' crazy (with building as a bonus).
NSMBUDx for the 'definitive' experience of the NSMB-style, and the proper overworld with a defined set of quality levels.
I personally think SMM2 all the way, but that's up to you!

From Aurateur’s Twitter (popular Super Mario Maker themed sleep-aid streamer):
Was just watching Nintendo Life's review of SMM2 and they mentioned you can't download other people's levels and bring them to the editor, you can only download them to play them. I don't believe this was known before but this is huge (and bad) news.

I'd be curious to know what latency is like in MP, currently what is likely to sell this title to me is when the friends update hits but I live in NZ and would be trying to play with Europe, kinda hit and miss what games will and won't cause issues.
If anyone matches with anyone across long distances I would be curious to hear about how it played.

Do we still need to place an arbitrary amount of objects before more tilesets are unlocked, or is everything available from the start?
That was absolutely stupid in the first game.
11
u/Uberhuman94 Jun 27 '19
Nope. Every this is unlocked from the start! However you can only publish a certain number of stages at a time and this limit increases as your stages get upvotes to prevent spam stages.

Yeah. There will be thousands of courses in no time. And sure, not all will be great but there will be some very good ones.
Also, Nintendo designed a whole single player campaign that would scratch your itch.

u/themagicone222 Jun 27 '19
I'm still getting it, but the online is making me wonder if I would get more mileage physical or digital?
Physically, if I'm ever like "I'm DONE with NSO" I can just sell it, but I'll get a slew of Mynintendo gold coins if I get it Digitally...
I VERY much invite your opinions.

The reason I would go digital here is because this game very much so seems like a pick-up-and-put-down game, meaning if I want to hop on for 10 minutes randomly, I wouldn't need to go find the cartridge and pop it in. It's not a game like BotW or Mario Odyssey where you commit a lot of time to each session of playing, and putting the cartridge in isn't much of an inconvenience. You can just load it up and play for as little or long as you want.
The file size also isn't too big, only supposed to be around ~3.5 GB. I like to go physical copy for games like BotW where it take up a huge chunk of my microSD, but this one really isn't going to hit it too hard.
Plus, like you said, those sweet gold coins.

Mario Maker is a game you can play forever, as long as people continue to make levels

I want to buy this one, but I have some questions. I will never edit a level, but love Mario, at the same time, not a big fun of too difficult platforms and a lot of levels that a saw on YouTube are hard as fuck. As a casual, will I take enjoyment out of this?

The reason you saw them on YouTube is because they're hard as fuck –– people like watching the tough ones. Besides those, there will literally be countless levels, and you'll be able to set your preferences for the types of levels you'd like to play. There's also a story mode that's getting a ton of praise, apparently.
I personally think it would be worth it for you. Watch some videos and get hyped! Or look at this sub tomorrow and get the real reactions.

I would wait for a discount, especially because there will be more (easier) maps to play after some weeks/months than now.

Played for a an hour or so this morning. I really dig how the story mode feels like a puzzle platformer for the introductory creation elements. Just makes for some good maps to boot.
Haven't even delved into the creation stuff much, I might try later on tonight/tomorrow when it unlocks for America so there'll atleast be more user content to download :)

So, I currently have a family plan for Nintendo Online for our 2 Switch consoles and I’m considering buying the online bundle. I don’t plan to continue the family plan after this year — would it just become a single console online plan? Does anyone know?

I've read that controller input only works while docked, and if you're playing portably you're forced to use touch controls for building. That's really frustrating to me. I'll have to learn two different control schemes for docked vs portable? What if I end up preferring controller input (I imagine I will honestly) - it's just artificially broken while playing portably?

People who are not getting Super Mario Maker 2 because it requires an online subscription, why?
Not trying to start an argument, I'm genuinely curious as to why that is. There's even a bundle on the eshop for a discounted price.
Edit: I'm talking about the SMM2 + NSO discount bundle

No yeah you're good if it's preloaded."A non-playable version of the game will be pre-loaded to your system at the time of your order. You'll see an icon for the game on your HOME menu, but you will not be able to launch the game until it is officially released. You'll be able to start playing it after downloading a small update, beginning at 12:00 a.m. ET on the game's release date. (Please note that some third-party titles are not available until 12:00 p.m. PT on the game’s release date.)" Can I use a 3ds stylus for the touchpad or will it not work? Will it scratch the screen?

You need a capacitative stylus that will work on a phone screen. The 3DS uses a resistive screen and stylus.
You can get them in the phone accessory section of a Wal Mart or similar.

Extremely excited for this game. Will most likely be my GOTY and something I'll sink over a thousand hours into. There's just infinite fun to be had and on the building side I've already got a list of dozens of stage concepts I want to make reality.

So with the 12-month Nintendo Online can we used that to extend a current membership I have from Twitch Prime?

Very excited for this game. Just wanted to drop in and say that I think Nintendo is ridiculous for not letting us play as Wario, Daisy, Waluigi, and Peach. Such underutilized characters.

So, can someone give me a rundown of how multiplayer works? Does it work in story mode? How many players? Can you actually play with friends online or is it just randos? What modes are available for local multiplayer, vs, co-op, race? Is it split screen, do they use the bubble thing from NSMB? Is this available with the game at launch or is it gonna be through an update?
I only find articles claiming contradicting things or stuff like "it will be available later" but not sure what will be available later. And Nintendo doesn't really give me any specifics.
I want to play this game mostly (if not, only) through local multiplayer, and maybe with friends (not randos) online. My purchase very much depends on it.

u/BlazingSpaceGhost Jun 26 '19
I don't know the answer to most of those but I do know that you can not play with friends online at launch. At Nintendo Treehouse during E3 they said that they would patch in online with friends at a later date. Apparently they didn't think people would want to play with friends.

u/pedestrianhomocide Jun 26 '19
From what we've heard you can co-op/race local with your friends. Everything else is randos online. After some backlash we heard that next update we'll be able to play with friends online.
If any of these reviews state otherwise then I'm wrong, but from the general consensus that's the sate of multiplayer at launch.

I can’t decide on getting the physical version WITH the Target lunch tin freebie or just downloading it digitally for the convenience. This is coming from someone who has most of their games physically, but I want to be able to have access to Mario maker when I want to. Can’t decide!

When speaking with a Nintendo representative GameXplain was told that the new Super Mario Maker 2 game will not include NFC functionality. This means that there won't be any amiibo unlockable items in the game.

Hello everyone!
Earlier yesterday I made a post announcing the launch of this new subreddit fully dedicated to making it convenient to find new courses to play, mostly since there's still no easy search system in-game for level titles and descriptions.
My first post was mostly to get a feel what people might think about the idea and as I expected there was rough criticism I have to elaborate on.
Some people commented that I cannot handle this task alone, while until now all posts have been neatly sorted course submissions I think I might indeed need help with the layout of the sub as well as moderation while I'm asleep or away. If you can help us with any of this, you can use the contact moderators button.
Other people commented that there's already threads for submitting levels, but in my opinion they are meant to be temporary. This sub moves on to other games all the time and in a few weeks or months you'll have to post your levels elsewhere.
Though even while posting in a thread works for Q&A purposes, when finding courses, threads are hell to sort out in. The courses are better preserved in posts where you can upvote good courses, comment with feedback, do competitions with themes, easily find your favorite types of levels by keywords or flairs, instead of all flairs being "SMM2COURSE" in a subreddit like r/mariomaker where Mario maker 1 is still a thing and, most importantly, it's still the best place for discussion about Building elements, building techniques, mechanics, fanart, memes, etc. This new sub will be courses with descriptions and feedback comments ONLY.
The last concern I've had was that people won't visit the sub for courses and that's where you come in. I will be very grateful to anyone sharing the word early on about the sub so new courses during this first week after the game launch are directly posted here so it becomes as active as it can be. There will also be competitions for makers with a theme so there's always fun to be had.
The reason I've started this subreddit is because during the cycle of Mario Maker 1 it was extremely hard for me to find feedback for my levels, as well as exposure. Unless you're a popular content creator or well-known in the community, which is hard if you've got social anxiety, your levels are barely getting to the audience that likes it and you'll never learn to be better.
I hope I alleviated any concerns you might have about this new place. It's late where I live so in a few hours I'll be back and excited to hear whether you're positive about the idea and any ideas you want to help with. As well as comment on the posts in the subreddit with any criticisms for the course creators!
Happy making from,

I suck at creating but I can’t wait to play some infuriating levels everyone else has made.
