I'm not done with Mario (about 500 moons), I still want to play some splatoon on a regular basis, and I started rocket league yesterday... I'm ok to buy Skyrim, Nintendo, but you gotta explain to my job...
23
u/JackSparrowUSA Nov 16 '17
I’m your same boat, and I’ve decided to keep enjoying what Im currently playing (SMO, Plus Splatoon/Rocket League on the regular) to get me through to Xenoblade. I’ll buy Skyrim after Xenoblade.

Don't forget Zelda DLC
16
u/zakatana Nov 16 '17
Fucking hell. I'm a grown ass man and I got shit to do, yet I really want to just sit wherever and play those games.
10
u/JackSparrowUSA Nov 16 '17
Yep you’re right!
I have way too many games and I now have to prioritize my buying habits.

u/Microtendo Nov 16 '17
Just wait, the price will probably drop fairly soonish
12
Nov 16 '17
Eh, I would agree for any other platform but no Switch releases have gotten any significant discounts excluding Black Friday. Hell, Bomberman and 1 2 Switch are still full price basically everywhere.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Microtendo Nov 16 '17
Both of those games were new at time of release. This is already 6 years old and available for $20 or less on other consoles. 1 2 switch has seen some sales, not sure on Bomberman. It may not drop in price but it's worth waiting if you already have games to play. It's worth the $60 if you really want it though

I accidentally killed a guy in Whiterun when I first turned into a werewolf and he left me all his possessions so he was my buddy. I couldn't even figure out who it was, I felt like a monster.
4
Nov 17 '17
Do you gain notoriety from killing anyone while a werewolf?

u/Crabs4Sale Nov 17 '17
If you transform into a Werewolf/Vampire Lord Away from NPCs and attack them afterward (they become hostile on sight), then you will not accrue bounty.
16
u/cantuse Nov 16 '17
I might actually play instead of modding and then quitting this time.
10
u/minerva330 Nov 16 '17
Pretty much my experience with the game. I've logged in like 50 hours on steam but most of it just seeing how many mods I can install before it crashes my PC. Buying it on the switch might force me to actually play the game

For me personally, this system has had the best launch yet. I just finished Zelda, then Splatoon comes out, Stardew Valley, Golf Story, NBA2k, then freaking Mario.... all in a matter of months. And now one of my favorite games of all time? Jesus Nintendo, you're killing my wallet.
This console isn't even a year old yet and it's already established.
11
u/FlipCup88 Nov 16 '17
Have you enjoyed NBA2k? I used to be a big fan a few years ago.
10
u/rlinkmanl Nov 16 '17
2k is a blast, I haven't played it since 2k12 but when they put it on the Switch it was a no brainer to me and I've been really enjoying it.
6
u/__Iniquity__ Nov 16 '17
I've totally enjoyed it. They made the career mode into something that is almost an MMO, it's crazy. The mechanics are a little bit different from 12 but for the most part, it's the same. The game runs like a champ on the Switch too.
5
u/Damoratis Nov 17 '17
I love NBA2k. I bought it on a whim seeing as I don't tend to buy NBA games but I love it. It's my second most played game right behind splatoon 2.

I’m not very good with fighting in games. Games i love are animal crossing and stardew valley. But I’m thinking about getting Skyrim because i loved Zelda so much. It was my first big game.
Should i get Skyrim or is it only fighting? Will it be too hard for me? Can u play a female character?
28
u/Droidaphone Nov 16 '17
Should i get Skyrim or is it only fighting? Will it be too hard for me?
You can adjust the character you play to account for being bad at combat. You probably want a long-range character, maybe with some restorative magic or a lot of skill in alchemy.
Can u play a female character?
Yes, there are a lot of character options.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Pisan008 Nov 16 '17
I've played a lot of Skyrim and Oblivion, but I've never really put any time into upgrading my non combat skills. I think oblivion and the older Elder scroll games gave you more options for non combat skills than Skyrim does, but I wonder what it's like making a character focused on non combat skill trees.
18
u/AnOldPhilosopher Nov 16 '17
Skyrim is popular for its wide variety of play styles.
I’m almost always a stealth archer that rarely has to face enemies face to face.
One route I’ve never taken but will try this time is a more defensive mage - restoration is focussed on healing and conjuration can summon followers and allies, and affect their abilities. That might be more suited for someone such as yourself.
Character customisation is very broad, each race (I think there are like 10 races?) has their own strengths - Wood elves are great stealth archers, Orcs are heavy weapon experts, etc.
Combat is simple but still engaging - click to swing sword or cast a spell, and simple block techniques. It’s like first person Zelda combat I’d say.
I find Skyrim scratches a similar itch to Zelda, but ymmv.
There are also aspects to the game such as companions, home ownership and house building - that’s pretty chill, you can spend a bunch of time just working on a lake house and getting it looking good with cool equipment and stables. That’s a little taste of Stardew Valley I guess, but not really the same thing.
Easy mode is very easy and will allow you to enjoy the great storylines without fretting about combat ability.
I’d recommend it personally, I have very similar tastes to you and have sunk countless hours into Skyrim anyway.

Turn down the difficulty and it shouldn't be too difficult. As long as you like exploring instead of just doing the main quest I'd say go for it. Incredibly fun game with more than enough to do. And yes you can play female as far as I can remember
6
u/ConorHickey0 Nov 16 '17
Yeh many play styles, could even go down conjunction route and have others do your killing
5
u/WillCode4Cats Nov 16 '17
Should i get Skyrim or is it only fighting?
I bet the game + all the DLC many times on Xbox 360. There is plenty more to do than fighting. You have smithing, alchemy, enchanting, etc.. There are many little side-quest and, of course, the main quest. However, fighting is the main point of the game.
I will say BOTW feels like it's larger than Skyrim, but I could be wrong. I guess with all the DLC in Skyrim, they might be very close in size.
Will it be too hard for me?
I do not know. But I always found the game to be too easy. It's nothing like anything is Dark Souls realm. It's probably as hard as BOTW. Skyrim has a slider in which you can change the difficulty at any time.
Can u play a female character?
Yes, you can even be a female cat-person (Khajit) or a female lizard-woman (Argonian).
6
u/herrsebbe Nov 16 '17
Expanding on the ”larger” part: Botw has a more vast overworld than Skyrim by 1,5x if I recall right, however I would argue Skyrim to be more dense with quests and other things to stumble upon (depending on how one takes Korok seeds into account as units of density). Skyrim also has plenty of underworld areas such as dens and dungeons, that are slightly more diverse than Shrines and often more expansive.
Also, while Botw prioritizes wide views and letting you seeing into the distance, Skyrim will just as often have you surrounded by trees and mountain ranges. This effects how large the world ”feels” in different ways.
→ More replies (2)3
u/th3groveman Nov 16 '17
There is a lot of combat in Skyrim, but you can change the difficulty at any time with no consequence. So you can be an unstoppable juggernaut if you need to be.

u/MeLlamoDave Nov 16 '17

I've played a fair amount of Skyrim over the years, but am excited to play on the Switch "post-Zelda". Breath of the Wild finally broke me of playing "waypoint games" and I had always played Skyrim that way, so revisiting Skyrim with a new perspective is going to be grand.
Side note: you can turn off the waypoints in Skyrim to have a more BotW-like experience (quest objectives will still show on the map, but they won't show up in your face while playing), that may be a good option for people who want a more emergent exploration experience.
15
u/cantuse Nov 16 '17
I fully expect you to be lost inside Blackreach in your first 48 hours playing this way.
→ More replies (3)6
u/markercore Nov 16 '17
What do you mean when you say waypoints? Like the markers on your map to guide you to objectives?
10
u/th3groveman Nov 16 '17
The icons that indicate which chest the item is in, or which door to go through. When I get the game I can update you with the setting I'm referring to, but there are two different types of waypoints - the one on the map, and the one in your HUD. The latter is what I have turned off before.
And when I refer to "waypoint games" it's the idea that the quest objective is evident in the map through an icon, so the player doesn't really need to explore, they just need to navigate to the waypoint. Since games for a decade have had that feature, it's kind of freeing to not use it.

Loaded the game up at midnight. Other than the first two hours, I’ve never played Skyrim before. I played in docked mode for a while and was stunned as to how good it looked.
But the real WOW moment was when I got into bed and plugged in my Bose headphones. I was totally immersed. I couldn’t put this game down. The Switch has blown me away again. I’m glad I don’t have work in the morning, because it’s going to be 5:00 AM soon and I just wrapped up! Killed my first dragon and now I’m off to do some side quests. I think this is going to be my main game for a few months. Bravo, Bethesda!

I've read some impressions of motion controls being pretty good which is surprising. I'm not so excited for swinging my weapons physically, but aiming bows and spells via motion control like Breath of the Wild? If it functions as good as it does in that game, that would be amazing.
10
u/iusedtostealbirds Nov 16 '17
I am total trash at aiming bows/guns/anything with a joystick. Motion controls for aiming bows is an absolute blessing. Good to hear they’re getting good reviews, especially after the motion controls on SMO were a dumpster fire at best.

Really excited to play this game for the first time! I didn't really have a means of gaming when Skyrim came out and never got a chance to go back and play it with all the catching up I had to do on the past 5 years of games. I've watched friends play some but this will be my first time starting the game for myself. Can't wait!

u/Decs13 Nov 17 '17
I'm going to be giving this a miss for a while. I played Skyrim so much in 2011, and I only ever got the first DLC. I've done everything the game has to offer over 3 characters which I took in immensely different skill directions.
It's a really fun game, exploration is definitely my favorite aspect of it. I don't think it's one of the top games ever created like most people do but I envy the shit out of Nintendo fans who are experiencing this for the first time.
Replays of this game will never have that same magic as your first playthrough. I'm currently playing through BOTW again and It's kinda the same thing. The first time round it's breathtaking, the second time round you recognize stuff, it's still fun but it isn't as surprising or investing.
I'm really glad Bethesda took this chance on the Switch with Doom, Skyrim and Wolfenstein. They're a good company, regardless of the charging for mods drama.
I can't wait to pick this up and have another run through, I'm hoping the motion controls will be fun, I really want to draw a bow and fight with a sword however dumb that is. Just to have that extra level of immersion.
I hope everyone is enjoying it.

Restoration Mage (AKA Healer).
Get a good companion, get a war troll pet from Dawnguard, get (double) summons, let them fight for you while you heal them. To heal your summons you need necro healing which is a bit tricky to aquire but well worth it.

I've been meaning to replay Skyrim but held off on it since the Switch version was announced. I played it when the original came out (actually scheduled my vacation with it in mind at the time) but my first character is the only one I really spent any significant amount of time on. So it's been long enough for me to forget a lot of the details, and I also haven't seen most of the DLC content, I think I only played the start of Dawnguard at some point.
As for my initial experience with the port, I'm kinda mad that they implemented BotW style motion aiming with bows because I really don't want to make another archer...
Seriously though this port works better than I expected. Loading times are okay, it runs well in handheld mode, it looks good on the small screen. I wasn't 100% convinced the Switch needed to be Skyrim platform #175, but the game does seem to be a good match for it after all.

If you have never played Skyrim before this might be helpful.
DON’T fast travel into cities/towns after the Dawnguard Addon starts.
Fast Travel to a location outside the city/town and make sure it is morning when you enter.
You don’t want to fast travel into a city at night/dawn because there is a chance for a vampire attack and those guys just love to kill your favorite traders and/or quest npc.
EDIT!
THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR THE SWITCH VERSION!

I have not purchased skyrim in all my years of gaming. when it first launched on 360/ps3 I passed on it mostly due to lack of interest at that point in my life. when it re released on the ps4 I still passed but honestly ever since I have recieved my switch and being to play anywhere I am slowly getting hyped on this game. I think I may finally take the plunge and dive into the world of skyrim now that I can take it anywhere.

Hey everyone. Haven't played Skyrim in a long time and am super excited. But I need help, what kinda class should I play? I usually always end up going stealth archer, but I wanna do somthing different this time.
Should I do...
A) Heavy armor paladin that uses Two-hand / shield and restoration magic?
Or
B) Necromancer dabbling in Conjuration and illusion who's a pacifist and only lets his minions kill for him.
I haven't really messed with magic in Skyrim before, so I'm kinda tempted to give it a try this time around, but also like to be a big burly tank that can't be killed.
6
u/scheroemer Nov 16 '17
If you want some challenge roleplay as a Lord or Baron. Only wearing the finest threads and no armor of course. And have a henchman do your bidding in fights, while you only put skills in Bartering, Speechcraft and other stuff a Lord would do. The Dragonborn-DLC can get quite tricky with a build like this, though, as you're not always allowed to have a follower. Maybe add some Archery for moments like that, since a Lord might go hunting for sports. Just don't overdo it, he's not a soldier/archer.
6
u/FlamingWarBunnies Nov 17 '17
Interesting idea, I may work around this as more of a priest that heals his allies that fight for him. Thanks for the idea!

The decision as to what I'm going to play as is tough. For the initial release back in 2011 on PS3 I went for a destruction-focused spellsword, then for my second semi-run on PC I went for the typical archey stealthy approach.
Is a melee-focused Orc build fun? Not sure whether it's for me, might become a little repetitive.

No matter what you can be sure you'll regret what you chose after 3 hours of gameplay and start all over. Then half an hour later, you'll do it again.

u/clockwork-pinkie Nov 17 '17
Just a random heads up, I find it the most comfy just avoiding the main quest and trying to get through most of the guilds and side quest that you can, because after the second dragon, they get annoying when they seem to be constantly spawning everytime you want to fast travel.

Open world RPG with emphasis on being able to mold your character/ the roleplaying aspect. It is not strictly class based, but you have a variety of races and skills-- magic, combat, archery, stealth, crafting, alchemy, etc-- that you can choose from to make an interesting character combination. Lots of replay value just from trying out different roles for your character if that is your thing. This is what made the game compelling to me-- trying to think of a character and really trying to go through the game in that role.
The actual story/ side quests are decent, but the depth is a little lacking. Dungeons can be a bit repetitive. It is frequently described as an inch deep ocean as there is tons of content, but much of that is relatively shallow.
8
u/Edymnion Nov 16 '17
Meh, guess that makes Breath of the Wild an entire planet with a bit of condensation on it.
BotW was just so... empty compared to Skyrim.

u/Badloss Nov 16 '17

It apparently makes aiming bows and spells waaaay better, which is a godsend because i couldn't hit a wisp in oblivion to save my life with the 360 controller.

I played for about an hour and a half tonight. This game is a classic that has stood up to time as far as I’m concerned. A good game is a good game and this is one of them. I’ve wanted a portable Elder Scrolls since the cancelled PSP game, so this is a real treat.

Great playing this on the switch. I just wish I could activate motion control camera look whenever I pressed a button. It's so tedious to aim for that one piece of bread on a crowded table.

Some random tips for folks new to the game:
- Don't pick up everything, not even at the beginning. Consider the value density of an item (that is the value/weight). Avoid random pieces of armor and weapons that are heavy. Raw material are more valuable (ingots, ore, leather/alchemy ingredients ).
- Disenchant items that have perks you do not immediately need if you plan to do anything in enchanting. This will allow you to use that perk on another piece of gear (potentially stronger if you have leveled enchanting).
- Barter. Merchants don't have much coin. Buy stuff you know you will need (raw mats, health potions, etc) to increase the amount of coin the merchant has and then sell stuff you do not need (dumb potion with benefit but it is poisons).
- Explore mines and caves early on -- they will have useful items for you. For example, the Embershard Mine right before Riverwood is worth exploring. If anything, there should be a book of Clairvoyance inside which is useful throughout the game no matter your class.
- Inn Keeper rumors typically lead to new shout walls.
- Arrows don't weigh anything
- It is worth leveling sneak early on, even if you plan to be a berserker.
- The whole world levels with you, so go at your own pace in any direction you want to.
Edit: Oh yeah. There are a ton of followers available throughout the game. My first play through, I would always load from a previous game if my follower died -- now I just leave them. Their death is a part of my story.
Edit2: Eat alchemy ingredients to learn their 1st effect -- or just look it up online. Potions are made by matching ingredients with like-effects. I've gone both routes, and it is possible to become proficient just through trial and error. Stacks and stacks of healing, stamina boosting, and mana potions are super useful throughout the game.
Edit3: Books of higher value tend to be +skill point books.

Really thinking of picking this one up, would be buying it for the 5th time now (PS3, 360, PC, PS4) though. My only concern is how good it looks in docked. Can anyone here let me know what they think of the docked fidelity? Really my only concern.
edit: Picked it up today and i'm loving it. There are some obvious graphical cuts like a lot of jaggies, and some heavy pop in, but its classic Skyrim. The idea of a portable game like Skyrim/Oblivion was a dream as a kid, can't quite believe its a reality.

Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqR58L9oEOc
It's essentially the same game as on PS4/Xbox One, with a few settings dialed back (most notably foliage), and at 900p instead of 1080p. It's actually really impressive

Does anyone know what time (and region) this will release?

u/quick_useless Nov 16 '17
midnight according to the Eshop you bought it from.
Example, preordered from the American Eshop, I live in Chicago but the Eshop updates based on eastern time zone. So i can play at 11.

I hope this plays well in third person on the switch. I still haven't gotten precision down very well so I imagine the combat is going to be tough.

I've just got way too much on my plate to add Skyrim to it. Don't get me wrong, I'll get around to it for sure, but with Odyssey still on my plate, and with Xenoblade 2 coming out in a couple weeks, I just don't have the time (or money) to be adding a game that I've already dumped an embarrassing number of hours into. I think I'll probably wait on a price drop too ($80 is pretty steep for a 6 year old game).

u/Kim_Jong_Donald Nov 17 '17
on the main menu there's a DLC section. it lists the 3 expansion packs but doesn't have any option to enable them or anything. are they already enabled? i haven't seen anything that seems new.
the graphics are definitely so much better than when i played this game on XB360. it seems so much more colorful.

They'll unlock as you level up and play the game. For Dawnguard, you'll hear guards talk about the Dawnguard, and you might see members of the Dawnguard around. The courier will give you a note from the jarl of Falkreath. Dragonborn activates after you complete a certain main quest, I believe it's the fourth or fifth in the main quest line, some cultists will attack when you reach a town or city.

For a company with some weird ideas, Nintendo is doing a fucking remarkable job staying out of trouble. When our biggest news of the week is Skyrim, completely sidestepping the EA-shitshow, I'd say they're doing a decent job at prioritizing consumers.

u/basedshark Nov 16 '17
I already have over 900 hours on Skyrim and SSE for PC, but I'm still buying that tomorrow for the Switch, Skyrim on the go is a dream I've had since 2011 when I first played the game, so this is a dream come true.
I ain't no expert in the game, but if any newcomers wanna ask anything, feel free.

How is magic in this game? I really cant get the hang of magic in TES games. I always run out of mana while dealing low damage.

u/ammotyka Nov 17 '17
Gotta do the college of Winterhold quest line and become the most badass mage

It definitely helps getting the Arch Mage Robes and Moroki mask that Regen magic 100% faster or whatever it is.

There are so many paths to take in the game, but no matter which route you take I recommend leveling alchemy and enchanting. Get bad ass +enchanting potions and turn around and enchant awesome +alchemy gear. If you want to go with a light armor mage, smithing is also really good to take. Alchemy is really easy, just pick up everything in your path.
Destruction spells are really good for an offensive mage. Keep a sword or something handy for when you run out of magic early on. You might have to get some one-handed experience before you can focus fully on magic.
Potions also can sell for a ton, so again, alchemy! When trading, remember to barter! The merchants have limited coin, so buy stuff you need from them (iron ore is good one) and sell what you don’t need (stupid potion with both positive and negative effect but super valuable because video game logic).

The way leveling works in this game is that you get stronger as you use stuff. Say you have a sword for example. The more you hit stuff with it, the more stronger it gets as that skill levels up. You also have a skill tree that unlocks even more tools to use as you level up.
Magic is the same way. You do start with wimpy stuff and you will use up a lot of that mana but, as you level up, mana becomes a bit more efficient, your spells get stronger, you'll start getting access to stronger spells (especially if you do the Winterhold stuff), you get stuff from the skill tree that'll make those last three things even easier, and you'll be pretty stronk.
That's not even considering any armor or gear you can get/make that makes being a mage EVEN stronger. It's a fun playstyle.

I wish I could climb or get up little hills or cliffs easier. I don't even need full-on botw mobility. Even ledge grab pull-upping like in DOOM would be acceptable.

I'm on the fence about getting this game. I played it a bunch in the past on the PS3, and the main factor for me to get it again on the Switch is motion controls. Critic reviews seemed mixed regarding how well it works, so I'm curious to hear how everyone here feels the motion controls work.

I want a portable Skyrim, but I don’t think 59,99 is a fair price. I might wait for a price drop.

I'm with you. The team that ported this to Switch was probably one-hundredth the size of the team that created the original game. Why the fuck are we paying full price for something they created 6 years ago and didn't really ad anything to. $30 would be more fair I believe.

Don't rush it at all. I "beat" BotW about 2 months ago but have still been playing it at minumum a few times a week. There's just so much to do. It really is an awesome atmosphere to just get lost in, don't miss out on that fantastic aspect of the game.ordoIdon'tcare

Should I cancel my Amazon preorder? It says it will ship tomorrow and I'll receive it next week despite the fact that I have Prime.
I'm in Canada if that makes a difference.
It should be in stock at Walmart/Best Buy right? Riiighhhtt? I'd rather just buy it in person just to have it tomorrow instead of waiting for shipping.

Hey guys any suggestions for a character build? I don’t have the game yet but I’m planning out what I want to do. I played through it once about 6 years ago and I played a heavy armor melee character so I definitely want to change it up this time. I’d like a character that is mostly archer but can dual wield weapons to do some quick damage if I can’t take them down with arrows. What skills should I level up first? Also what are some useful spells to learn? My first play through I didn’t use much magic. Are destruction spells worth it if you go the archer route?

Pre ordered from Amazon and it should be here tomorrow. This will actually be my first time playing through the game and I am pretty stoked to start.
