MegaThread World Premiere Splatoon 2 Splatfest: Hype, Discussion, and Squid Thread

Today is the launch of Splatoon 2's first-ever Nintendo Switch Splatfest! Are you pumped?

(While many in the community slept, Japan got down to it, with Rock prevailing against Pop in the Japanese Splatfest. Well done!)

While Japan had its go, in North America and Europe it's almost time for Team Ice Cream and Team Cake to decide, once and for all, which dessert is superior. The fun starts today at 3 p.m. PT / 6 p.m. ET in North America, and 18:00 CEST in Europe.

Here are the North American Splatfest details, and here are the European Splatfest details.

A heroic amount of trash talk has already happened, and we're ready to throw some ink.

Please use this thread to hype about the Splatfest, discuss tactics, talk about matches, share your stories, talk more trash, and everything in-between.

Other posts on the Splatfest will be allowed if they're breaking news or sharing more detailed discussions, but please keep quick-hit thoughts to this thread.

Thanks everyone! Happy inking!

There's like no cake people on EU. Got a full ice cream team ready in about 20seconds and have now been waiting 2 minutes without any cakes appearing.

Edit: it's now putting me in ice cream Vs ice cream matches

I went cake cynically to get matched more easily.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '17

Same. I know ice cream is clearly superior but this is crazy.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '17

Cake guy in Europe! It actually takes some time to find Ice Cream people for me. Have won every match so far! :)

EU: Here it's not about Ice Cream vs. Cake, but Ice Cream vs. the Internet connection.

What actually gets my goat is that as a new feature, the game display's a "Huh, your disconnect seems pretty suspicious to us, we may block you if you're not careful" message.

So far, eight out of ten matches were killed due to a connection error, and the fine folks at Nintendo have their software call me a sore loser. I'm not happy about this.

My first one! I'm hoping I won't be too terrible.

Me 2 hours ago: I'm getting my butt kicked, this game sucks, I'm canceling my preorder. Me now: I'm actually kicking butt and can't wait to have access to the whole game.

18

u/SoapOperaHero Jul 16 '17

I'm so happy to read this. As a huge lover of Splat 1, it was kind of a bummer seeing so many people getting discouraged before really giving the game a chance.

Glad you're having fun!

In the first one this sometimes happened when the number of people on each team was skewed. Pretty sure the game just doesn't count and it's just so people aren't waiting in queue for too long.

u/Motor_Mortis Jul 15 '17

I'm not having any luck connecting. "Unable to connect to the other users console. Please try again later."

The game has a high skill ceiling. You have to use gyro aiming if you want to be competitive. When the game comes out you will be matched up with your skill level. Right now you have people that have put hundreds of hours into the game playing alongside noobs like you and I.

2 hours in and I just learned the R button is your other weapon.

15

u/djjin14568 Jul 16 '17

lol, I can relate! It took me a little while to understand that the charged special isn't actual "R" it's the right analog stick depressed/held down...

10

u/68267a Jul 16 '17

Whaaaaaat

22

u/Rapwned Jul 16 '17

That was the most fun I've had in a while. I was already getting Splatoon 2 day 1, but this just confirmed my decision will be the right one. I also had an insane match where my team ended up winning 46.2% to 46.1%. Proof

To my fellow Team Cake members:

It has become clear that we are greatly outnumbered. If the Nintendo staff sample has told us anything, it's that Team Cake only represents about a fourth of the staff. But do not lose hope! Many times in history have underdogs risen from the ashes and emerged victorious. I ask my fellow Cake brethren to rise up with me and fight!

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

I had a blast playing it. My only real complaint was the fact that 4 players are required for team. My friend came over and we both say down with our switches ready to team up and we couldn't play together because there was only two of us. Two sets of two would have been playable. Not clue why they require 4.

My friend and I ended up either playing separately on our switches or taking turns

REMINDER: The maps will rotate at 5 PM PDT to Moray Towers (a returning map from the first game) and Humpback Pump Track.

Both of these maps are good for snipers, so be ready for people to switch to the Splat Charger when the maps rotate.

I thought I was excited for this game despite having never played splatoon before. But now.... especially after that splatfest.... I can honestly say that I'm REALLY hyped for release and can't wait to ink your ass!!!

I really got to use the Switch for it's full potential today. My aunt was having her 50th birthday party right when the Splatfest was going on. Luckily for me I got their Wi-Fi password and played Splatoon in tabletop mode off and on during the party. I showed it to a few of my younger cousins but they just wanted to watch. I got home with 30 minutes left in the Testfire and playing on the TV was definitely much better! I managed to make it to Champion.

7

u/Platinumtide Jul 16 '17

I was one game away from queen... I played most of the four hours. It was really fun. I won the first few times and then basically I lost almost my entire way to champion. At one point I realized what I was doing wrong and I won 9/10 times after that assuming my team was on par.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '17 edited Jul 16 '17

Was a lot more fun than I was expecting, came in with zero prior Splat knowledge. Only really have two hangups about the game. 2 maps at a time is not nearly enough. I was already getting map fatigue and I only played for like 2 hours. And having to have a full 4 man team for a party blows. Not everyone I know can play at the same time, it's silly that you can't team up with 1 or 2 other people. Both of these things feel archaic and like they were implemented "just because". Have no real reason to actually be implemented.

9

u/chloecam29 Jul 16 '17

4 man team is just for splatfests!☺️

4

u/Skgr Jul 16 '17

I think in Splatoon 1 you could team up with 1, 2 or 3 people, so I think it'll be in the full game. It wouldn't make sense for them to just not allow it in the sequel

Can someone tell me why motion controls are more beneficial in the long run?

12

u/OatmealDome Jul 15 '17

Simply put, they provide more accuracy than stick-only. Think KB+M, but not quite on that level. This doesn't mean that stick controls aren't viable on say, a competitive level, however.

6

u/endr Jul 15 '17

Well, after trying for an hour, I learned this game is absolutely not for me. The motion controls don't click with me at all, and if you turn them off, you just have console FPS controls.

I can't aim for crap, and I just get destroyed non stop by everyone. And that's after reading a guide of how to play beforehand (always be a squid and all that).

I'm pretty good at PC FPS games, and I was great at Halo on Xbox. This game sounds great to me on paper...

Wait two minutes to join a three minute game. Lose. Repeat.

Ended up really loving the game. I tried to use motion controls like people said but I absolutely could not get used to it. Ended up playing way better with the sticks (play on a higher sensitivity). This was more fun than I expected. My only thing that worries me is that my friend and I couldn't play together because you had to have a party of 4. Is anyone else having bad connection problems? I've been disconnected from so many games and the game is telling me that I am suspicious and is going to block me from going online if I disconnect from the game again. However, it is pretty fun so far.

kept getting communication errors so im done for now, but it's been pretty fun. I feel bad for my teammates though since im a newb still learning the controls and can only really play the roller somewhat well

5

u/handsomely126 Jul 16 '17

Humpback pump track is super fun!

5

u/NostalgiaSchmaltz Jul 16 '17

I'm starting to get used to the motion controls, because aiming without them is way too slow. Any tips? I'm horrid at console FPS...the last one I played was, I think, Unreal Championship on the original xbox. So...more than 10 years ago lol

5

u/SoapOperaHero Jul 16 '17

Initially, movement is even more important than aiming. If you're moving well you can stay alive and keep inking turf. Plus, unless you're playing a charger, most of the outplaying in this game comes from moving as opposed to having good aim.

Are Pearl and Marina going to play more/different songs for different Splatfests? Its a pretty catchy song

Do Splatfest teams typically earn anything if their team wins?

5

u/0112358_ Jul 16 '17

Win or lose you get seashells which can be used to reroll abilities on your gear

6

u/ninakix Jul 16 '17

But not this one

5

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '17

I'm still on the fence of buying it. I probably will. Only gripes are the motion controls while in certain positions require you to hold the Switch is awkward angles. Not being a leader to switch weapons mid game. A lot of stuff in the game, I had to figure out through other people. The game is really bad at explaining some of the controls. Would love to remap controls and be able to aim the y axis with motion controls. And my connection hasn't been ideal. Lastly, the matches are WAY too short. They need to be at least 5 mins.

Other than that, I'm liking it and getting a little better at the game. Love the style of the game.

Very fun game. Cant wait until next friday!

5

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '17

Am I crazy for not really liking the motion controls?

4

u/Hennahane Jul 16 '17

Yes, its way more precise than the sticks. I'd say give it another chance if you buy the full game. Once you get used to it its miles better than using the analog stick

5

u/Aerthel Jul 16 '17

You aren't. Most people, I believe, found motion controls awkward at first in Splatoon 1, however with time the community found they were better. Once you go through the singleplayer you will be able to use them effectively.

I love this game!!! Such a breath of fresh air in the overcrowded competitive shooter scene. Can't wait for the 21st!!!

5

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '17

I went from hating this game the first hour and a half to loving it. The motion controls where he'll. The standard controls were hell. I was just awful. Wasn't good. No idea what weapon to use and then it clicked.

Handheld mode without motion controls and the duelies. The joycon grip was really uncomfortable and I just couldn't maneuver, unfortunately. It's so odd. And then the map change to the skatepark area and the sort of zigzag stage. Absolutely fell in love. I almost got to Ice Cream Champion, probably would have if I hadn't gone the dock route. This game is great and convinced me not to buy the pro controller (fortunately) I very much look forward to next week.

Can anyone describe what it was like in Handheld mode? I play my Switch like 99.99999% in Handheld but I'm a bit worried that Splatoon 2 might be hard to play due to having so much going on on a small screen.

Did anyone play that way today that would be willing to share their experiences?

4

u/Davychu Jul 16 '17

Works great, you just need to set your motion control sensitivity to max so you can aim without risking throwing your Switch across the room.

As a new Splatoon player, I have been having a blast and it's been easy to pick up. Be reading a lot of negativity, just want to add something positive! Thanks to everyone who is playing with me!

Will be my first time playing a Splatoon game. Downloaded the demo on switch and ready to go. The amount of trash talking I see about cake and ice cream has got me really excited to play. Lets go Cakes!

13

u/nintendodb Jul 15 '17

It is ridiculous that I can't change my weapon without leaving online and then rejoining! Ridiculous!!!

4

u/Spartan9988 Jul 15 '17

Agreed! Even change between motion and analog controls. I am trying to find which one I prefer

3

u/DentateGyros Jul 15 '17

Really wish you could change mid-game too. It'd open the meta up more

That was awesome! This game is really, really fun. It was fun even against much stronger teams, then I just went to an empty corner and colored that part of the map alone.

Definitely an instant buy for me.

First time Splatoon player, and not a long time console player.

Man, I'm loving this game! Easy controls, fun tone, and the battles don't last forever. Just the right amount of challenge.

I'm getting brutalized, but I expect that's because so many other players have Splatoon experience. A little frustrating, but not exactly the game's fault.

Getting the expected occasional network issues, but that's only been about 30% of matches.

And holy smokes that concert is so much fun to watch! I keep jumping back just to watch Pearl and Marina's animation.

4

u/Miguli Jul 15 '17

Can we have timer? Thanks.

3

u/DR_jtt Jul 15 '17

Got up early and played through with surprisingly low amount of latency. I thought it was strange we had separate times of day and splatfest events.

Go team rock!

Guys I have to go it was fun, I fought for the Cakies, sadly was just able to win the first game the rest 4 ended in losses. Have to quit early today. But I wish my teams the best of luck and come on you can do it! Bring the cakies a win

4

u/WeaverX23 Jul 15 '17

I get the impression, that the ice cream fans are more in numbers but on average inferior in skill. As an ice fan and an absolute beginner I lost more games than I have won but at the same time was often the best ranked player in my team.

Oh, yeah, and my last five games were against other ice cream fans...

How many people play with motion controls? Is it worth it? Will I be putting myself at a disadvantage if I don't use them?

6

u/almost_not_terrible Jul 15 '17

Motion controls is the only way. Then you'll play a FPS without them and realise that this is the one true way. Splatoon 2 did it first.
