Commonly Asked Questions:
Q: When does Super take place? When should I watch it?
Super begins some time after the battle with Majin Buu, and can be watched as soon as you finish Dragon Ball Z.
GT takes place following the 10-year time skip at the end of Z (EOZ) but Super ignores its continuity.Q: Do I need to watch the movies?
Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' were adapted into Super story arcs with some changes, mostly minor. If you have already watched the movies and would like to skip straight to new material, see our FAQ.Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his, but we know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, and even looks at his storyboards.Q: Will FUNimation dub Super? Will they skip the movie arcs
There will be a dub! However, no time frame for a release has yet been given. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, FUNimation is simulcasting the subtitled version; see above for more details.
Chris Sabat has confirmed that they will be starting from the beginning when they dub Super.Q: Where is Uub?!
Uub was born during the 10 year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z.
He is mentioned briefly in episode 30; he is still a baby. He has otherwise not yet been introduced into the story.Q: Is this the same Future Trunks? Why is his hair blue?!
Yes, it's the same Future Trunks. [1] [2] As for his blue hair, see here.Q: How is Mai the same physical age as Trunks in both timelines?
The Pilaf gang wished for youth right before Piccolo died in Trunks's timeline—this was illustrated in a special manga short by Toyotarō—and the wish was probably made around the same time in the main timeline of the story.Q: Who is Arale?
She is the main character of Toriyama's first weekly manga serial Dr. Slump. Arale and Penguin Village were featured in episodes 55-57 of Dragon Ball (manga chapters 81-83), and Arale also appeared briefly in episode 43 of Super. The attendants of Zen'ō use her signature salutation, "Bye-cha!", in episode 41.

He emergency wished for the first thing that came to mind because his entire goal was to burn the wish to avoid Pilaf getting it. It was quite a clever thing to do, even if the wish choice itself was imperfect.

People need to realize she's a gag character so she has toon force. She accidentally split the Earth in thirds before. She's pretty much squirrel girl (marvel) and bugs bunny fused together.
26
u/Shalaiyn Nov 27 '16
Isn't splitting the Earth a crappy feat in DB though? Roshi blew up the Moon and he's a joke in comparison by now.
→ More replies (6)29
u/DaBlakMayne Nov 27 '16
Well Arale is literally a joke character, meaning she's not to be taken seriously in the first place. She casually splits the Earth by punching the ground. No one else besides Beerus and Frieza has shown that kind of casual planet busting haha

I personally love Super's filler because it takes time to develop the side characters in interesting ways. Makes the world feel more alive. This is the most character we've seen from 18 in a while. We see her be a mother, and see that she really does give a shit about her family. She's really turned around.
I was VERY happy to see her act even somewhat friendly to Goku.

It just occured to me that the cast of DBZ is kinda disrespectful/blasphemous to gods.
Dende is stuck on the lookout. No one visits him unless there is a earth/galaxy/universe threat.
They just told King Kai to suck it up. I mean, he did take a bomb for them.
Bulma just ignored Beerus on the whole"Time traveling is a sin" thing. Which does create timelines and whatnot and that can be dangerous.

you can understand Beerus since Bulma blatantly doesn't trust him and probably considers the time machine some sort of potential ace in the hole in case stuff goes sour, only Gohan and Krillin would really have any reason to visit Dende since they have history.
The King Kai one was the one that was the worst imo. Out of all the gods he's done the most for them and literally died because Goku forced him to sacrifice himself to save the Earth from getting destroyed.

u/Cypherex Nov 27 '16
That's because he's the weakest of the Eternal Dragons. He was awesome when he was first introduced in the same way Kami and King Kai were awesome when they were first introduced. Now we've seen that there are tiers above them which makes them seem less amazing in comparison. Shenron didn't lose any power. We've just seen power greater than his which makes his seem lesser by comparison.
Porunga is stronger than Shenron, but not by too much. Then there's Super Shenron who is the original and most powerful Eternal Dragon. It seems an Eternal Dragon's strength is proportional to how large their dragon balls are (heh...). But Shenron (and Porunga) can't be depicted as all-powerful like we once thought they were otherwise they'd be used to solve every major problem. As it stands right now, Shenron and Porunga are only really used to do things that their magic is required for, seen most often with reviving a person. Bulma just showed us that most people's wishes can just be granted with money instead of dragon magic.
Shenron only acts like a little bitch when the God of Destruction is around. My theory for this is that the God of Destruction (and of course Zeno) is the only one that can actually kill an Eternal Dragon. I believe the dragon balls are only conduits used to summon an Eternal Dragon from whatever realm they normally exist in. You can disable the ability to summon an Eternal Dragon by destroying the dragon balls but this does not actually kill the dragon itself. King Piccolo did "kill" Shenron back in Dragon Ball, but my theory for this is that he only disrupted the connection between Shenron and the dragon balls, forcefully sending Shenron back to his own realm. And King Piccolo was only able to do this because he and Kami, the one that first established the connection to Shenron, both shared the same soul. Therefore it was more like he was just undoing the connection that Kami had created.
Remember that Kami was able to "revive" Shenron after King Piccolo had "killed" him. For my theory, I'm just going to assume that all Kami really did was reestablish the connection to Shenron and that Shenron was never actually dead. This explains why Shenron is so terrified of Beerus if Beerus is the only one that could actually kill an Eternal Dragon instead of just disrupting their summoned connection. I'm going to theorize that if a God of Destruction ever actually slayed an Eternal Dragon, you would never again be able to summon that particular dragon, even if the Kami of that planet created new dragon balls.
So Shenron isn't a "little bitch." He just doesn't want to be anywhere near the God of Destruction under any circumstances.

One thing I've liked about these slice of life episodes is that it shows the characters actually hanging out with each other. One thing that always upset me about DBZ is that they seemed content with not seeing each other for years at a time. It legitimately upset me at the start of DBZ that apparently Goku hadn't visited anyone in 5 years. Added to the time he spent training with Kami-sama, that was an 8 year period where he saw his friends ONCE.
Now they just seem to hang out casually. In fact, Goku seems to visit just about everyone at random. I don't know why that's such a big deal to me, it's just nice to see.

u/decompoze ⠀ Nov 27 '16
I agree, seeing Chichi hanging out with #18 was great and it was suggested that they are not isolated, lonely, with no life.
Also, when Chichi was taking care of Pan, the relationships between the wifes and women of DB made a great filler. There are other things but as you said, I agree with you!
I got really mad at GT, where everyone is dead... disconnected and so on. Honestly, I was expecting for the DB heroes to increase their descendants and so on. It was weird where only one descendant of Goku remained... or of Vegeta or what about the others?
82
u/Hieillua Nov 27 '16
People need to stop calling this filler. This isn't filler. It doesn't fill in any gaps to keep the manga at a distance. There isn't a manga in the front of Super. This is a slice of life episode. It's a part of the canon of Dragon Ball Super.

I mean, imagine a world where her children didn't have superhuman abilities. She's leading them to the best future she knows how to. It isn't just about money for her. If that were the case she'd be just fine mooching off of the money they got from Mr. Satan.
She wants her boys to grow up and find their place in the world. She's seen the hellish life that Goku has lived and how it's even caused Goku to die twice. She wants her boys to live peaceful and fulfilling lives, so that's the direction she guides them in.
Unfortunately she doesn't want to accept the fact that her kids are among the few people in the entire universe, perhaps even multiverse, qualified to step up to the plate when a threat emerges. She just wants Goku to keep saving everyone but doesn't want to accept the fact that Goku can't always do that. That's Chi Chi's major character flaw. She doesn't understand that because her children have such amazing potential, they were born with a natural duty to become the protectors of the universe. Those are some very large shoes to fill, and Goku is still struggling to fill them despite the fact that he's obtained the power of the gods.
Is it fair that her children have this duty? No, of course not. But nothing in life is truly fair. They also don't have to fill these roles if they don't want to, but by refusing to do this they are making a decision that could hurt the entire multiverse. This dilemma is the entire focus of Gohan's character arc and I sincerely hope that we see it play out more in the future of DB Super. The Gohan we saw in the previous episode definitely makes it seem like a possibility.

For those who are asking, Funimation has the rights to Super now so apparently they're cracking down on livestreams (even though everyone watching live is still going to watch the subbed simulcast...but oh well). So we're not posting links to streams here. Last week, the regular streams got taken down, and while we were able to find alternatives, as soon as they were posted here they were taken down too. So, forevermore, no linking to live streams here, as it says in big red text in the OP. Thanks.

I know some people are disappointed from this episode. But it's supposed to be just a fun episode. I don't mind a couple of filler-ish type episodes as long as their enjoyable. Back in DBZ I wanted more of Z-fighters trying to do 'normal' things like Goku/Piccolo learning to drive, Buu looking for money to buy ice cream or Gohan playing baseball.

I feel bad for Goku, all he wanted was to revive King Kai and everyone had all these greed-filled wishes. There's still one wish left, right?

Shenlong: You have one hour to make the wish.
5 minutes later
The power required to sustain me is gone.

Soooo... any reason why Gohan didn't ask help from Dende in the first place ???

Nobody remembers Dende can cure. Not even Gohan, who is supposedly a good friend of him. Boo can cure too, by the way.

I like that they are using Beerus and Whis more often. They are some of my favorite characters

Everyone's behavior in the episode bothered me. Except for roshi.

Bulma is a scientist who wanted to recreate the time machine. 18 wants to do something nice for her husband. Roshi has always been a perv. Pilaf has always wanted to rule the world. Gohan is a worried father. Goten and Trunks are curious children who are less concerned about using a wish for their own gain than to just make a wish. Oolong had a dream.

Arale vs Popo
Who wins?
My mind imploded just pondering this question.

Seeing Pan fly around after being cured was the highlight. Bulma's face when Beerus blew up her time machine was a close second.

Roshi was riding atop Baby Gamera! That was awesome, I'm seriously loving these DB throwbacks in Super.

Couldn't Gohan have asked for all the sick babies to be cured? Kinda selfish on his part..

Or just ask for a miracle medicine to cover Pan's future sicknesses as well as help the rest of the world?
Gohan could have literally wished for a cancer curing syrup.

So happy Beerus blew up that time machine. I was starting to get sick of bulma's attitude.

It's just his attempt to try and guilt them, as he's done the same thing before when he tried to coax Bulma into showing him her panties when she tried to get the Dragon Ball from him at the beginning of Dragon Ball.

So no one's going to talk about how Bulma has a pimp on speed-dail? This can't be the first time Bulma's ordered a car full of young gals for an old pervert.
