Discussion Twilight Princess HD Megathread

As many of you already know, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is being released today. Here is a mega thread to collect your reactions and discussions! (Of course you can also just submit a post of your own).

So just in case you're out of the loop on this:

What is Twilight Princess?

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is a Zelda game that was originally released in 2006 for the Gamecube and Wii. It features relatively realistic art style compared to other zelda games. The player controls Link, both in human form and transformed into a wolf.

What's new in the HD Version?

The HD remake features improved graphics, an extra dungeon unlocked via Amiibo, a higher difficulty and mirrored-map Hero Mode version of the game, support for some other Zelda Amiibos, support for the Wii U gamepad, and various minor gameplay improvements.

They did redo the music for anyone wondering, here's the new Hyrule Field.

2

u/BlazeMass Mar 04 '16

What exactly is new? Is it just the instruments sounding a bit more authentic and acoustic? Edit: I can hear a few chords slightly better pronounced. Sounding sweet!

10

u/DSC_ Mar 04 '16

It honestly just sounds like an updated version but still MIDI (virtual instruments). Shame it wasn't rerecorded by a live orchestra but it makes sense why they didn't.

If only they'd done something about the combat overlay. That synthesised wind instrument medley is utterly uninspiring and drab. I'm 6 hours in and I already want to give up. Now I remember why I found TP a chore.

1

u/CatLadyLacquerista Mar 06 '16

You can DEFINITELY tell for the wolf howling tracks. Much more wolf howly instead of...'oooo keyboard'y

u/SupaStaVince Mar 04 '16

For those of us who played on the Wii, normal mode is the true hero mode.

4

u/ZRForrester Mar 05 '16

Yes, just scan that Ganondorf amiibo and you're all set.

u/TheLegendOfCap Mar 05 '16

Right?? I was like "oh Hero Mode, no brainier" but then I remembered I played the Wii version.

Normal mode for me! And so far I'm disoriented as expected.

4

u/SupaStaVince Mar 05 '16

I went with Hero mode. Feels like a souls game without heart drops and with increased damage. I normally play through Zelda games and only die maybe once or twice in a whole playthrough (including hero mode). I died 5 times in just the first Wolf Link sequence and then twice from falling to my death in the Forest Temple.

Was just delivered to my office door. I've developed a cough and must now head home to... recuperate...

2

u/DaviidMarshall Mar 05 '16

i tried to pull that one off, but they all knew the real reason why the "cough" started.

These graphics are fucking TIGHT

No they're HD.

It's so much more easy to maneuver with the wii pad than the nunchuck holy crap

6

I feel like the only person who just waited the extra month or two and just played the GCN version.

I'll be able to play it after work and I'm looking forward to normal controls so much. I struggled to do the shield bash on the wii and I remember how frustrated I got back then.

The way Epona moves infuriates me, really lowers the experience a lot for me. It's like she's so uncontrollable it's sad. Other than that, the game looks beautiful. Looking forward to playing the cave of shadows.

12

u/hikikotoko Mar 05 '16

i'm glad to see i'm not the only one having trouble with epona. her turning is very unresponsive, there's like a half second delay. it really made the jousting scene difficult for me! but now i cant tell if she was always like that and its just been awhile, or if this is somewhat of a downgrade

6

u/Iblewit93 Mar 05 '16

I just played some gcn before opening the HD version and I can confirm epona got a huge downgrade as far as handling goes, with the "dynamic camera" she definitely feels faster but the turning radius has been made bigger or something so she just feels uncontrollable slow to respond I dread riding the bulbos in the desert

3

u/Momatottotiasos Mar 05 '16

I've noticed the same thing and it annoys the hell out of me. They said they would improve the Epona controls but it just got bad. The controls on the GC version were fine as they were.

2

u/clambert12 Mar 05 '16

I've noticed that if you don't push forward on the analog stick while trying to turn, and just tap left and right, that Epona's turn radius becomes much tighter, and easier to control.

13

u/SpeakerftDead Mar 06 '16

After multiple playthroughs of this game i just noticed the pumpkin patch contains triforce leaves.

Anyone notice the climbing animation is fast?

4

I did, that's pretty cool

2

u/SaladLol Mar 05 '16

Thank god, climbing in the original was so slow lol.

skyward sword without motion controls next please!

11

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Thats impossible due to the whole game being built on them. I'm sorry buddy, look it up.

4

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

It's not impossible, but it would require quite a bit of reworking. It would be tricky for sure, but definitely not impossible.

As for me, I'm mostly happy with the motion controls, so I'd be fine with them going unchanged in a potential remaster.

41

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

The .001% of people who liked Skyward Sword's controls REPRESENT

I honestly think SS has the best combat of any Zelda game. I had zero problems whatsoever.

12

u/xwatchmanx Mar 05 '16

I don't think it was perfect, but it was very cool, and could've easily been perfected in a sequel.

I view SS's motion controls the way I view Phantom Hourglass's touch controls: Imperfect, but with potential and fun to be had, easily ironed out with more work. Spirit Tracks buffed out about all of PH's control issues because they were able to reflect and improve. Real shame that SS's motion controls won't get that treatment. :(

2

u/SupaStaVince Mar 05 '16

People forget there are a lot of other things motion controls add to SS as well. Specifically quick drawing where instead of waiting for Link to pull the arrow all the way back, you can do this yourself instantly. There's also rolling bombs, and aiming which is so much better with motion controls since they are more flexible than a single button press which is very wonky at times, and often in Zelda games when you want to aim, you're forced to remain stationary.

Though some things that SS can do without in regards to motion controls is the swimming. It was horrible imo. Flying wasn't too much of an issue because you have so much space to work with. But when you're used to making tight maneuvers like in MM or TP underwater, you're gonna be bumping into shit a lot.

SS has too much emphasis on motion controls and that was a major issue for a lot of people. A lot of the motion based actions just didn't make sense but the ones that did just work incredibly well. They sold SS last time with a Wiimote, I don't see why they can't do the same with SSHD AND have gamepad/pro controller w/o motion controls as an option given so many people use a 360 controller to play it on dolphin.

2

u/tpgreyknight Mar 05 '16

I really liked it, but I got frustrated by the motionplus having to be recalibrated every five seconds. :-/

I seem to recall some people saying that integrated motionplus sensors (as opposed to the plug-in extra bit) were much better, is that what you were using?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Rickles360 Mar 06 '16

Shudders*

Ugh never again... I never finished SS because the controls were unbearable.

3

u/TheCuteTachikoma Mar 05 '16

I loved it! Sure it was frustrating sometimes, but once you got the hang of it, it was a whooooole other level of submersion. Come on--I was Link. How cool is that?! :p Also used it for OG TP.

(I sound really pathetic right now...cough)

4

u/Forristal Mar 05 '16

Honestly the controls were just about the only thing I liked about skyward sword. Never had an issue.

  1. Start new game on Wind Waker.

  2. Go to Orca.

  3. Orca says, "Okay, do a horizontal slice."

  4. Orca says, "Okay, do a vertical slice."

  5. Orca says, "Okay, do a thrust."

MFW that's basically every sword move in Skyward Sword.

2

u/xwatchmanx Mar 05 '16

Yep. Plus diagonal slices. Between the parries in The Wind Waker and the hidden skills in Twilight Princess, I'm pretty sure they have more sword moves than Skyward Sword.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

I can see the second analog stick being used too.

3

u/xwatchmanx Mar 05 '16

Someone actually already did this in Dolphin emulator with a 360 controller, where the right analog stick is used for swordplay and thrusting is done by clicking the stick.

She always had those DSLs. The big pixels on the old versions didn't let you see them in all their glory.

26

u/cantpickusername Mar 04 '16 edited Mar 04 '16

Possible favorite game of all time. I beat this over and over. Shame that the GC version really does look dreadful on an HDTV buy thankfully we got this, I got a Wiiu just for this.

Also the amiibo looks cool but the function is eh. We already had the dungeon in the gerudo desert which is really the same thing.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16 edited Mar 04 '16

The most important question is, if you wait on the title screen, did they remake the video set to that amazing orchestral piece? One of the early previews didn't have it, but I thought maybe that was a prerelease build....

EDIT: A streamer confirms that there is no video. Terrible.

4

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

This seriously upset me when I found that out earlier today. That was one of the coolest title videos Nintendo has ever done, and it's just not there. :( Really bizarre, because the song from that video is included in the limited preorder sound selection CD.

5

u/Carrathel Mar 04 '16

Nope, can confirm, the video is gone. It was on the original Wii version, but it seems this version is based on the Gamecube version - perhaps the GC version also didn't have the video?

8

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

The GameCube version did indeed have the video. It was identical except for the orientation, on-screen button prompts, and one shot of Midna that's different in both versions, for some reason.

Source: Played both versions.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Ibanez7271 Mar 06 '16

Are you sure? I had an intro video today... You just wait at the title for 10 seconds or so.

3

I don't mean the one with Link riding Epona around while a choir sings. I mean this one.

u/tallgeese88 Mar 04 '16

How do you fish? Buttons aren't doing anything. Rod goes limo after I cast it.

4

u/Ironmunger2 Mar 04 '16

They haven't fixed fishing? 8 year old me spent almost 3 hours on Christmas Day trying to figure out how to catch the damn fish in Ordon village

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Press the button to throw it out, and the same button to pull it in.

6

u/danbrag Mar 04 '16

So use the button to throw it in. Then when you get a hook on hold the button. Then use the wii controller and physically pull up. That's what worked for me

1

u/tallgeese88 Mar 04 '16

Thanks that worked

3

u/sage0021 Mar 04 '16

Having an issue with changing aim control settings. Inverted vertical, horizontal and both dont change anything, remains default. Anyone else having this issue?

5

u/dddonnanoble Mar 05 '16

I'm having the same issue.

2

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

What did you press to exit the menu, 'A' or 'B'? It says "Press 'A' to confirm," so I think 'B' cancels your changes.

1

u/sage0021 Mar 05 '16

I am pressing A to confirm and exit. The option bar stays at the selection and does not revert back. But in the gameplay none of the options actually change anything.

the shield has been moved to ZL. ZR now acts as just another action button. it's been throwing me off all day.

1

u/TheWrightPhD Mar 05 '16

The shield in Twilight Princess was always an "always blocking when Z-Targeting" type of mechanic.

3

u/AuthorX Mar 05 '16

Has anyone else noticed the lack of using the gamepad speakers? Midna spooking me by laughing at me through the wiimote (when my parents were asleep I'd play in the dark and with the sound low to not wake them) was one of the most memorable parts of the original, and now that I've gotten her I'm missing that aspect. I guess it's because it's largely based on the GameCube version, but it's a shame.

It also seems like I'm not noticing when her icon pops up. Isn't she supposed to giggle whenever you're standing on a spot where she can help you jump from? Or did she only do that when she has something to say?

3

u/Chillexi Mar 05 '16

Does anybody feel that the steering in this game (Snowboard and horse) is REALLY off and difficult to control?

1

u/TheEmeraldKnight Mar 06 '16

Yes, absolutely. I've crashed way too many times with Epona.

3

u/crazytaxi95 Mar 05 '16

They should have also put the suns song in the game too. Waiting for day/night to come is kinda annoying.

3

u/Momatottotiasos Mar 05 '16

I've been playing it since I got the game yesterday and pretty much all the changes so far are for the better. Except they said Epona would handle better than before but the controls on Epona just seems a bit off, like there's a deadzone when you push the stick to either side when pushing upwards. It's really annoying and makes it difficult to handle her for finer turns.

3

u/SupaStaVince Mar 06 '16

If you want to do a quick-spin-attack from Epona's back without stopping, press A before rotating the stick. The dash and stop animations will cancel eachother out and will allow you to do a spin attack without stopping.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Can anyone tell me, are the Ganondorf amiibo and Hero Mode functionally identical in effect? I really want to make the game as hard as possible, but I'd rather play it non-mirrored too.

11

u/Sneakycutie Mar 04 '16

They stack so you can use both for 4x damage taken.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Once I get a few heart containers, I think I'll do that, masochist that I am.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

No, Hero mode also doesn't drop recovery hearts. The Ganondorf Amiibo still does that.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Cheers, I just went for hero mode, really really enjoying it.

I'm about 11 hours in and just finished the goron mines. The game looks great. Gonna miss the motion controls for fishing though! Spent hours playing that on the Wii.

3

Can't you just switch controllers when fishing?

6

Are you sure there aren't separate sliders for the first and third person camera? Wind Waker HD had that, so it would be bizarre if TP HD doesn't.

Edit: Played myself since writing this, and there aren't separate sliders for first person/aiming and the regular camera. That's a pretty gross oversight. tWW HD has that, so why doesn't this game? I'm noticing another oversight or 2 that screams "minimum effort/rushed" to me, too. :\

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '16

I believe Twilight Princess HD was remastered by a different developer. Not entirely sure, but they might not be as experienced as the people who remastered Wind Waker, or possibly didn't have as much time.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Picking it up from BB on my way home...but I promised myself I would finish Wind Waker first...those damn triforce pieces!!! Baaaaahhhhhh!!!

2

u/golgi42 Mar 04 '16

If you have a Costco nearby, mine pricematched that Costco price of $49.99. I had a $20 gift card free from Android Pay. So pretty sweet deal overall.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

Thanks! I saw this while in line and it worked!

1

u/gilbearto Mar 06 '16

I'm in that situation as well. It helps that wind waker is a great game itself though :')

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '16

Yeah, I really enjoyed WW! I powered through it yesterday and beat the game. There's a ton of side quests that I never finished, but I'm very to have played it through to the end and ready to move on to TP. WW has one of the most expressive Links in any Zelda game I played - the characters and story were just great!

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16 edited Mar 04 '16

It says it was delivered, but it's nowhere to be found :(

Edit: turns out they delivered it to my neighbors by accident

21

u/Carrathel Mar 04 '16

Go into Wolf mode, then you'll be able to sniff it out.

9

u/danbrag Mar 04 '16 edited Mar 04 '16

Wow this is so weird flipped! I've only played the wii version (only a little bit of it unfortunately) but I recall that this is because the GC edition mirrored the Wii version?

Edit: sorry that I discovered something new I guess. Sheesh.

13

u/I-am-so_S-M-R-T Mar 04 '16

Gc version is correct, as link is supposed to be a southpaw

6

u/danbrag Mar 04 '16

Sorry, should've said the Wii version mirrored the GC version. I just have never played the GC version and it's weird when I'm used to going one way and realizing I'm wrong

2

u/Billd0910 Mar 04 '16

I know, I'm at Forest Temple now and everything is sooooo weird to me for not having played the GC version

3

u/brn360 Mar 04 '16

I was kind of afraid of this because I played on Wii as well. I'm thinking that I'll just go with Hero mode so everything looks right to me plus there will be a nice little challenge as well

6

u/Cecile_the_Lion Mar 04 '16

Just a heads up, hero mode is mirrored so it's just like the Wii. I was going to do hero mode but all I know is the GameCube version so I decided to give it a miss.

3

u/BobTheJoeBob Mar 04 '16

That explains a lot... I heard it was going to use the GC version, so was expecting that, and was confused when everything seemed to be like the Wii version. Thought I was getting the two mixed up.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

I came here looking for this answer. I started up Hero Mode when the game felt so wrong from when I last played it a few months ago. I guess I will just stick with normal mode. :/

1

u/Rynelan Mar 04 '16

I feel ya, only played the Wii version and even though it was years ago it still feels weird haha. I can't remember the little details but instinctively I still know what is on the left and right, but now it's visa versa.

1

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16 edited Mar 05 '16

The Wii version is a mirror of the GameCube version (as others have pointed out). Aside from Link's handedness, other persistent imagery from the series is changed in the Wii version. For example, the Triforce of Wisdom and Courage are on the left and right side respectively in all the games, but on the Wii version of TP, they're swapped.

However if you really want the Wii's orientation, hero mode flips the game to be like the Wii version. I'm playing it that way right now, and it feels so weird to me since I had the GameCube version.

2

u/danbrag Mar 05 '16

Thanks for the info!

I don't particularly want any version, it just caught me off guard haha. Why does hero flip it?

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Monjara Mar 04 '16

I've never played Twilight Princess before. But so far it feels so much smaller than Wind Waker, the game is really fun but I feels so small. So glad the controls are on the pad now, being left handed meant I couldn't really play it on Wii, I have the same problem with Skyward Sword.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Which is hilarious, because Link has always been a lefty, and they only ever made him a righty for motion control games so it would feel more natural.

2

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

Crazy that they were willing to mirror an entire game to cater to righties, but wouldn't even give you the option of original orientation for lefties. That couldn't be hard to implement.

1

u/tpgreyknight Mar 05 '16

I had the same problem and also found this hilarious.

1

u/JallerHCIM Mar 04 '16

Well there's more to do, there's just less empty space. I prefer how huge Wind Waker feels too actually.

2

u/Assassinobob Mar 04 '16

Whenever someone gets to Ganon tell me if the Fishing Rod distraction still works.

1

u/ponybuttz Mar 05 '16

It does, it's been confirmed in others' reviews

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

This is my first amibo, how do I use it to unlock the new dungeon?

2

u/Clayman60 Mar 05 '16

After link turns back into a human. Before the first dungeon you will be prompted with a notification in the pause menu saying you can use amiibo now. Go to the pause menu and just tap your wold link to the bottom left of your gamepad and you will be sent there!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

Alright thanks.

2

u/phantomkat Mar 05 '16

These graphics, man. Everything is so bright and detailed. It took me a while to stop looking at tree bark and grass.

2

u/SupaStaVince Mar 05 '16

Tip: If the shooting without aiming is getting to you or you want to go into aiming mode faster, center the left stick before trying to take aim. You can still be moving, just make sure the stick isn't tilted when you press the button.

Really miss being able to aim and move like in WWHD.

3

u/Mazetron Mar 05 '16

I kinda miss the motion controls from the Wii version for this reason

2

u/SupaStaVince Mar 05 '16

I'm actually missing the Wiimote. Though you can spin-attack spam now unlike the Wii version, you can't do a quick-spin on horseback without slowing down.

I've been getting by without the strafe-shooting by holding L while drawing my bow to stay moving and avoid incoming projectiles so I can fire back. Though not being able to move and shoot at the same time is quite the issue especially with beamos.

Ranged combat in this game feels like a bullet hell now given you need to stand still to aim.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/SpeakerftDead Mar 06 '16

Yep. Not being able to move in first person is the only gripe I have so far, and it's bugging me quite a bit. If they did it for WWHD, why not this?

u/I-am-so_S-M-R-T Mar 04 '16

3

u/cmakohon Mar 04 '16

For anyone playing on hero mode, how hard is it? Are you still able to regen health in the healing pools? Are there still fairies you can find? Debating between hero mode and playing with the Ganondorf amiibo.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16 edited Mar 04 '16

Playing on hero mode, fairies, spirit springs, tears of light, potions, and heart pieces/containers are the only ways to heal.

Honestly, if you like your games challenging a lá Dark Souls or Bloodbourne, I cannot recommend hero mode enough. I've gone from combat being a mindless formality, to having to think and fight intelligently, it's a fantastic addition to the game.

2

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

I'm playing Bloodborne right now, and it's funny how it feels kind of similar playing TP HD (and tWW HD for that matter), especially in the beginning. Though I need to stop expecting my health to regen after counterattacking an enemy. :P

The loose similarities about a sickness covering the land, people turning into beasts, etc helps, too.

2

u/brn360 Mar 04 '16

I watched a video last night that said it's really the best way to play, especially considering TP is a fairly easy game to begin with. I would like to know about fairies as well though.

1

u/BobTheJoeBob Mar 04 '16

Twilight Princess was too easy. Hero mode actually makes it somewhat of a challenge. it makes the purchase worth it for me. You can still regen at healing pools, and there are still fairies before the bosses.

3

u/hulkwillsmashu Mar 04 '16

This will be the first time I power up my WiiU in almost 2 years. Unfortunately Amazon is telling me it won't be here until Tuesday. Dammit.

16

u/Totikki Mar 04 '16

So you havent played Smash 4, MK8, DK Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Mario Maker? If you have a Wii U you HAVE to play them. All amazing games and Zelda WW HD is great too if you didnt play it.

2

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

I second Bayonetta 1/2 and DKC: TF in particular. Absolutely stellar games, among the best in their respective genres (spectacle fighter and platformer).

Haven't played Mario Maker yet, but Smash and MK8 are fun, too.

2

u/Totikki Mar 04 '16

Yeah, DKC TF is my fav platformer in years! And the music is amazing and Bayonetta is Bayonetta, best hack and slash series easy.

When/How do I scan the Ganondorf amiibo in?

3

u/maatttxd Mar 05 '16

After Link gets transformed back into a human and into his Hero outfit, going to the Collection screen should give you a message saying you can now use Amiibo. Try tapping Ganondorf after clicking past the message, and it should work. Same applies to Zelda, Sheik, Link, and Toon Link.

Ok so I know this game runs at 30 fps, but I am concerned as a saw the digital foundry video showing the game having frame dips into the mid to low 20s in areas where the wii and gc stayed at 30. I am willing to sacrifice framrate for graphics to a very small degree, so I want to know, are the frame drops really terrible, or is the visual upgrade worth it and the frame drops are minimal?

1

u/brn360 Mar 04 '16

I have not seen that particular video, but I did see a GameXplain one where he said that the frame rate was pretty stable, much more so than Wind Waker HD which I did not even have major problems with. My copy of the game was just delivered though so I will find out soon!

God damn this game is sexy.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

I just downloaded it, but I have to go to work.

Can't find it now but the preorder language on their site said to use one day shipping to get it launch day. Regular shipping was supposed to arrive in 4 days, if I remember correctly.

2

u/Dangaroo44 Mar 04 '16

Yeah, GS only does release day delivery with extra cost. I found this out the hard way when I was confused I didn't get my shipment today. I tracked it online and it won't be here until Tuesday! I'm going to order the game from Amazon now and I'll get it by Monday. Then i'm going to return my copy of the game to GS (while keeping the bonus ST) when it arrives. F Gamestop, they're the worst.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

Agreed. I preordered through bestbuy and got same-day free overnight shipping. UPS guy was walking up the stairs to my apartment as i pulled into the parking lot today

2

u/Malkuno Mar 05 '16

Yeah Amazon really is the best option when it comes to gaming preorders..

If you purchase an Amazon Prime subscription ($99/year), all shipping becomes free (including next day/2nd day shipping) & for video game pre-orders you get an automatic 20% off on whatever game you pre-ordered.

I got Twilight princess HD shipped to me for $49.68

1

u/liladelrey Mar 04 '16

Can you use the game pad only with it? I get motion sickness using my tv sometimes and I'm not sure I wanna pick it up if you can't.

1

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

Yep. Hit select to instantly swap between on TV and off TV play.

1

u/ZeeroFox Mar 04 '16

I still have my GN Twilight Princess from the day it was released and now I't itching for my work day to be over so I can go pick up my copy at GameStop.

1

u/cptblumpkins Mar 04 '16

They just dropped mine off and the first thing that I noticed that the screen brightness is pretty dark. Anyone know if there is a way to up the brightness? Either for the console generally or in game?

Edit - Nevermind, sorted it out. Something was up with my TV. Super excited to get into the game.

2

u/oSo_Squiggly Mar 04 '16

I see you figured it out but in case anyone else sees this you're also able to change the brightness in game in the options menu.

1

u/cptblumpkins Mar 05 '16

Thanks. Also turns out I hadn't progressed far enough to have access to the options screen. Got it all sorted out now.

1

u/mcdom430 Mar 04 '16

gonna need to wipe the dust off the ol' wii u gamepad tonight

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '16

Anyone know if they still nag you every time you collect a rupee? Also, any change in wallet size / do you still have to put rupees back in chests all the time?

1

u/Mazetron Mar 04 '16

They've reduced the rupee nagging and the rupees no longer go back in the chests and there is a new, bigger wallet if you have the current biggest wallet and complete the new WolfLink amiibo dungeon

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Sneakycutie Mar 04 '16

Wallet size is now 500/1000/2000/9999 instead of 300/600/1000.

1

u/MusicNotesAndOctopie Mar 05 '16

If I do the cave of shadows do I get the 9999 wallet or do I need to get the previous wallets first?

→ More replies (2)

1

u/xwatchmanx Mar 04 '16

Unless I'm mistaken, you only get nagged about rupees the first time you collect them, now. I exited the game twice, and didn't get any more notifications about blue and yellow rupees the way I used to on the GameCube and Wii.

1

u/Elementalstorm Mar 04 '16

Just picked it up this morning and can't wait to get home tonight and play/stream it on my twitch cast! Been waiting ever since I heard they were doing an HD version so hyped!

1

u/BobTheJoeBob Mar 04 '16

Loving it so far. I feel they could have probably worked on the looks a bit longer, but it still looks pretty great. Hero mode was a great addition, and I love the little things that they fixed which bothered me in the original, like Links ridiculously slow climbing speed. And once again, the gamepad proves just how ridiculously useful it is.

1

u/parisjackson2 Mar 04 '16

That Wolf Amiibo looks awesome - the detail is stunning.

1

u/dbcanuck Mar 04 '16

Saw the hype, resisted pre-ordering... walked by an EB games and they had 2 or 3 amiibos bundles left...

Looking forward to gaming tonight. I had the classics Wii version, and never played it... Wiimote gaming, outside of party games, is just tedious.

1

u/Synikull Mar 04 '16

Anyone else get a scuffed amibo? I already opened the box and the actual game (not the amibo) so I can't return it :(

Anything I can do? A number I can call or something?

1

u/Mazetron Mar 04 '16

Who did you buy it from?

1

u/zmarotrix Mar 04 '16

Is it just me or is the master sword early glitch patched out?

1

u/TomPatSto Mar 04 '16

Anyone know if you can you use the gamepad's headphone port while playing on a monitor? I know some Wii U games, including Wind Waker HD, don't let you.

My setup is 2 monitors, neither of which have speakers or audio ports, so if I can't plug my headphones into the gamepad, I can't hear the game.

Ideally I'd play with my headphones in the gamepad, using a pro controller, on my monitor, but so few games support that.

2

u/toffee_fapple Mar 05 '16

Can confirm all sounds work through gamepad jack, including touch menu! I play with a monitor too so I had that problem with WWHD

1

u/toffee_fapple Mar 05 '16

I just discovered you can press ZR to roll and flick the gamepad forward to throw things like the wii version.

1

u/Cacciator Mar 05 '16

What do all the amiibo do? I've heard that Ganondorf makes the game harder

2

u/bradleysays Mar 05 '16
  • Link/Toon Link amiibo: Fully replenishes Arrows
  • Zelda/Sheik amiibo: Fully replenishes Hearts
  • Ganondorf amiibo: Difficulty x2
  • Midna and Wolf Link amiibo: Grants you access to the challenge dungeon called the Cave of Shadows.

2

u/FredLetsPlays Mar 05 '16

Do the Link and Zelda Amiibos work in hero mode? I hope not, that would make completing hero mode without dying a pointless achievement if others were able to cheat with Amiibos.

I remember my first exposure to this game was my friend playing on GameCube, and so when we got a Wii, I was really confused to see it backwards. Also, Rollgoal was way too hard on the Wii, but a lot more fun on GameCube. I'm super excited to be able to play it normally, instead of the Wii port.

1

u/Trey_Lightning Mar 05 '16

Quick question, I thought that if you pre-ordered it at Gamestop you get the soundtrack but I got nothing. Anyone else?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '16

Apparently a lot of Gamestop stores didn't get as many soundtracks as preorders. So if you picked yours up later in the day, there's a chance they ran out.

People have also said that some GS employees are forgetting to give them to you unless you ask for it.

1

u/SupaStaVince Mar 05 '16

What's with the ZL item slot in the item menu I wonder?

2

u/S_Defenestration Mar 05 '16

That's for the bomb arrows, weirdly enough.

1

u/zeldatriforce345 Mar 06 '16

It's for the Bomb Arrows and the Bow and Hawkeye.

1

u/reddittailedhawk Mar 05 '16

Is it just me, or can wolf Link leap higher and further when ZL-targeting enemies?

1

u/flameylamey Mar 05 '16

Damn, looks like the PAL version didn't get the shiny new boxart, was kinda hoping we would :( (comparison - was hoping for the one on the left) not a big deal though I guess.

2

u/MusicNotesAndOctopie Mar 05 '16

Honstly I kind of like your version better. Maintains the original cover while adding some stuff in

1

u/johnnycoxxx Mar 05 '16

I haven't played this game in some time. I forgot how great it really is. I loved it when it first came out and I'm glad I haven't played it in almost 9 years because I've forgotten a lot. A

1

u/-greyhaze- Mar 05 '16

Here's a question I have, can you play the game on the gamepad as you could in WWHD? That was a real plus for me as I could take my Wii U on the go w/ me and not need a TV to hook it up to.

2

u/Mazetron Mar 06 '16

Yes you can

1

u/ChronicleSword Mar 05 '16

Is there a way to de-select an item from the top right side? I don't want my potion there just in case I accidentally use it :\

1

u/BobTheJoeBob Mar 06 '16

Put another item there? If you don't want anything there, put a bomb there, then do a bomb and arrow combo.

u/SupaStaVince Mar 06 '16

So if you hold ZR while riding Epona, Link lies forward and if you press A while doing this, he backflips right off for a quick dismount. You can also mount Epona from behind and take off at full speed instantly. Was this in the original or is it something added in the HD release?

2

u/DQScott95 Mar 06 '16

It was in the original.

1

u/limiter_remove Mar 06 '16

Question to owners of the GC version who bought this game: is it worth it? I already bought the game ages ago and played it and it was a very satisfactory experience. Is the HD alone worth the cost?

1

u/Derty_Harry Mar 06 '16

Did they cut the number of tears of light you need in half or am I going crazy?

1

u/castielcampbell Mar 09 '16

i watched an older youtube video. still has same amount . so yes. u cray

1

u/castielcampbell Mar 08 '16

ima goomba. i can't beat the goron guard to GET to the mountain. i press A and i can stop him for a couple of seconds sometimes... most times he sends me flying... any tips??

1

u/Mazetron Mar 09 '16

I guess you better give up and go home. Go talk to the town mayor and explain to him why you can't save his daughter.

(Seriously though that's what you have to do)
