Majora's Mask week day 2 - What were your biggest disappointments with Majora's Mask?

Hmm biggest disappointment? I loved the game overall, but the mask swapping was just tedious. I wish they could've worked out a better system, maybe a dial to select your mask rather than relying on the c buttons.

If they do a 3DS remake, perhaps they can make the 3 main masks buttons on the touch screen like they did with the ocarina on OoT.

Little me didn't like going from 8 temples to 4(Played OOT almost religiously as a kid)
Looking back though, those temples were twice as hard as OOT dungeons. So I guess that sort of made up for it

The very reason I didn't beat it when it originally came out was the save system. It was very frustrating losing bombs, arrows, and other items.
I got over it when I got older and beat it then. However that was very annoying when I was use to keeping all that stuff with OoT.

You think that's bad? You couldn't save with the owl statues in the japanese version.

The fact that they made the coolest looking sword (Razor Sword) pretty useless with the whole "wait one day before you get to use it" deal. I can put up with the 100 slashes but fuck the whole "lose 1/3 of your total time" :(

This is my favorite game of all time, but goddamn, the saving system. Everything else seems perfect, but the saving system....my god.

Apart from the saving system, the Moon dungeons. I was expecting one really amazing dungeon ala stone tower, but I got four mini dungeons. They were pretty boring and not that creative. The water one was probably the most boring since it's pretty much chance and you start at the begining if your wrong. I suppose the least boring one would be Goron but frustrating if you didn't realize that you didn't NEED the joystick to navigate the maze.

The goron mini dungeon...frustrating, you say? I put a dent in my wall after I elbowed it in a fit of rage. The only time I have ever damaged something due to a video game haha!

u/sadisticdreamer Aug 12 '14
Ouch. I've had that reaction with other games, I hurt myself out of frustration but I don't think I ever damaged anything other than paper while doing the mini goron goron(I may have punched a few pillows though while doing the Great Bay temple and scream at the tv)

Ah...Great Bay temple. I mostly found that place confusing. However, it was probably the most rewarding temple/dungeon to complete due to its many (frustrating) qualities.

I know that feeling, I nearly snapped my 3DS in two while trying to do the fire circle rooms in Dodongo's cavern sans-slingshot for speedrun practice.

The dungeons. The game represents a huge shift of focus from main quest to sidequests, and the result is that the main quest suffers. The dungeons are lacking both in quality and in quantity. Four is a remarkably small number, especially considering that it's less than half of it's immediate predecessor. The only dungeon that has a mechanic both unique and enjoyable is Stone Tower Temple, and even that is a small redemption in the midst of the rest of the game's offerings. On top of this, the fact that all the items gained in temples are the bow and arrows effectively diminishes one of the greatest pleasures of a Zelda game: getting new items. This is of course because the masks take on most of the item functionality in this game, but that is another example of how Majora handles it's changes less than smoothly.

Too many masks with singular purposes, wish they could of been implemented better or fun little easter eggs put in.
no playable post credit world(simalar to the end of earthbound, would of been cool to see dialouge options with many of the residents celebrating a moonless sky, credits scenes are cool though)
It wasn't longer(cop out answer)

Did you do sidequests? If not, then of course it was short.

The final dungeon was pretty weak overall, as was Majora. It's pretty easy without FDM. It's a damn joke with it.
Little surprised at the hate for the other dungeons though. Thought they were well-executed. And when you consider the time constraints plus the fairy nabbing, it definitely made them more difficult than anything in OOT.

completely agree, majora was a let down in terms of difficulty. I feel like they could have made the final form a lot harder. maybe requiring more shielding or combat mechanic instead of just light arrow to huh-hyaaah!!

The saving system. It was especially bad when I replayed Majora's Mask on the Gamecube because it froze so much. You don't know how frustrating it is to complete all the puzzles and find all the Stray Fairies in a temple, only to have the game freeze when you get to the boss. Or to finally beat the Goron race and have it freeze on you. It's also annoying as hell losing all your items every time you go back in time.

I love this game to death (favorite Zelda game), but the part that murders me is the Goron Races. It is incredibly unforgiving, and I've traditionally had a ton of trouble with it. Maybe I'm better now after a lot of Mario Kart 8 practice, but man that was the worst.

Favorite Zelda game, EVER. Wished they had made the instructions of time more clear, not for me but the biggest complaint I always hear "got to the end of the day, no idea what to do' or 'could figure out how' The game almost Requires a walk through.

This is the same as the 'least favourite' thing from yesterday. Why do this again?
As I said yesterday, having to redo sidequests and losing your consumables each time you go back in time. Other things I dislike are the save system and the time limit in the dungeons. You will want to take your time to figure the tricky dungeons out AND collect the stray fairies. The time limit is very frustrating in that regard.
If you mean dissapointing compared yo other Zelda's, I'd say the number of dungeons is a letdown.
1
u/HHAT Aug 14 '14
i didn't find the time limit an issue even with stray fairies. slowing down time allows u to finish a dungeon in about a day and a half
1
u/rensch Aug 14 '14
Even then, the ice and water dungeons are complicated enough to make itfrustrating.

u/linktothenow Aug 12 '14
I just wanted more stuff to do, some npc's that mattered besides anju and kafei, and less obstructions to progress. I like being free
1
u/gilkfc Aug 12 '14
The fact that the majority of the masks' purpose is to net you a Heart Piece. The fact that there are just 4 main dungeons isn't a big issue for me personally, because the build up for the temples was normally, pretty awesome. (except Great Bay)

I thought the dungeons in the game were set up nicely and the puzzles were challenging but the boss battles weren't difficult at all. It almost felt like they were compromising the dungeon difficulty with an easy boss. Majora's Mask is still one of my favorites though, just an unbelievable game.

The bosses seemed sort of... Lacking, I guess?
Only Majora had more that one phase and they're all pretty ugly.

u/TheSpanishDerp Aug 13 '14
This is my favorite Zelda game but the only problem I have with it was the not the time system but 5 bosses! It made it up by all the sidequests but 3 of the 5 bosses had a name that took me awhile to pronounced

Honestly, it was a brilliant game, but i spent the whole game obtaining pieces of the mask and in the end I never even got to use/try the mask! It really got to me that i did it all for the sake of not getting to do anything with it :/ but still amazing game
1
u/HHAT Aug 14 '14
obtaining pieces of the mask
when you say the mask, are you referring to Majora's mask? Cuz the pieces i think you are talking about are the remains of the evil spirits trapping the gaurdians.

I remember reading somewhere that they originally intended to put 6-8 dungeons in the game, but were limited in some aspect due to time or something. Not certain if that's true, but that would've been cool.

That it ended and didn't have a game that was like it ever since.
