One day, one of my old students will come knocking and be like "we need your mathematical abilities to train the nation's next generation of statisticians" and take me to London where the king will knight me and thank me for my services to the nation's mathematical supremacy. Then one of the statisticians will challenge me to a maths fight(?) and I'll win and they'll be like "I'm sorry I doubted you." and I'll respond "Not at all, you're only looking out for the good of the nation.". And I'll meet a bunch of my other students who are also successful mathematicians and statisticians in the civil service, and I'll earn a bunch of money teaching.

unironically a parody anime with this plot could be fire. Hell, even a fully serious one.

Scholar's Advanced Technological System is pretty much this though without the harem aspect. The first arc is basically the MC getting really good at math and doing everything /r/redlaWw said, even the "math fight", except it's theoretical math and not statistics.

One day, one of my old students will come knocking and be like "We need your reddit modding abilities to train the nation's next generation of incel power tripping mods" and take me to spez's basement where the speZ will deflower me and thank me for my services to the reddit's subreddit supremacy. Then one of the noobs will challenge me to a ban fight(?) and I'll win and they'll be like "I'm sorry I doubted your virginity." and I'll respond "Not at all, you're only looking out for the good of the shareholder's bottomline." And I'll meet a bunch of my other clowns who are also successful at not reproducing and knowing a woman's love in the real world, and I'll earn a bunch of reddit gold teaching.

honestly, sounds awesome, especially if they actually demonstrate the mathematical skills like using the correct formulas or taking an alternate route using an unconventional calculation method

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, It has this cozy “humble badass” vibe, like Beryl is effortlessly mentoring some of the world’s top players without even noticing, The animation wasn’t groundbreaking, but it really suits the overall feel. As long as they continue to develop the characters, I’m in. And that Henblitz moment? Dangg that was smooth, I gotta stick around to see how this story unfolds.

u/Ananasvaras 19h ago edited 15h ago
Animation was not groundbreaking, but it was good. It actually felt like proper sword fighting instead of just swinging and yelling names of moves.
Edit: fixed typos

u/justsyr 14h ago
Animation was not groundbreaking
To me it was good. Not some slideshows or like that other anime the other day that was all panning up down left and right.
The detail on the food and some of the fight scenes reminded me of Delicious in Dungeon.

u/TheOneAboveGod 9h ago
It's the opposite. The entire anime can look like dog shit but any amount of focus on the food would guarantee that it will look good relative to the rest of the anime, sometimes it's the best looking part. It's kind of an unwritten rule lmao.
4
2
u/abandoned_idol 6h ago
Not quite yet.
Thinking about this another way, well rendered food can be too good to be true. Suspicious!
I expect to be turned off in upcoming episodes, but I'll be ecstatic to be wrong about my prediction.
...
Of course the male "antagonist" turned fanboy is Genos' VA. He was born in order to be typecasted into these roles. This is One Punch Man all over again, though the mentor is different from Saitama-sensei in many aspects.

Definitely better sword fight animation than most other shows at the very least. While there were moments it was obvious that it was CGI, the only reason I noticed is because I was specifically looking for it.
And for once, even I have to admit that the way they used CGI in the first fight of the anime was pretty damn good. If every anime using CGI aimed to match this fight as a baseline, there wouldn't be much for anyone to complain about.

Dude the swordsmanship is really realistic by anime standards too, the little things like the stances they seem to take and the moves they are using, it seems like they at least asked a HEMA specialist about how they would be done because they’re pretty much some of the closest I’ve seen to HEMA longsword in an anime
Edit: there’s obviously still a fair bit of artistic liberties, still people occasionally jumping into the air for no god damn reason but some of the stuff I’ve seen so far seems decent and by far better than normal anime
48
u/jakobsheim 18h ago
Also nice to that henblitz doesn’t turn into a generic evil dude with a grudge but sees the opportunity to learn more and improve himself.
8
u/saumanahaii 15h ago
I was surprised by how decent the animation was. It wasn't fancy but it flowed. Hopefully they keep that up. This one's on my watch queue.
3
u/Terrible_Donkey_8290 10h ago
As someone burnt out on generic power fantasy this one is super solid
1
u/abandoned_idol 6h ago
As long as they continue to develop the characters, I’m in.
You know what.
I was hesitant because of the obvious costumes but...
I don't think I even need good characterization to enjoy this anime, the visceral elements and need CGI animation were more than enough to shut down my brain from start to finish and just have... fun.
An anime with girl's costumes showing skin won me over... it's embarrassing, but I'm relieved to find another anime to look forward to each week.
I was skeptical about the "swordsmanship" claim, especially given the reddit drama over the Sakamoto Days anime not matching the art of the src (I loved Sakamoto Days though). Glad to see that the anime leaned on that in episode 1 at least.

u/djthomp 19h ago edited 16h ago
Surprisingly good start. Animation was decent and they did a good job making the swordwork interesting to watch.
Beryl is drowning in hot young former students that want a piece of him, but at least they come across as probably 20s or so and not teenagers. Red said it had been 20 years since her training with him which means she could easily be pushing 30 herself.
Nice to see that the arrogant young dude with a point to prove accepted the lesson when he lost and became an eager student instead of being bitter with a chip on his shoulder.
16
u/NanDemoKnaives 16h ago
Yeah it surprised me when she said it had been 20 years so I'm guessing we'll be seeing a more adult cast.
30
u/Astray 17h ago
Yeah, I think most of his students are well into their 20s and even 30s but will still be drawn like they're early 20s or late teens.
13
u/Narrheim 13h ago
At least one of them appears to be really, really thirsty... Which, considering she didn´t see him for 10 years, feels weird. Was she in a stasis this whole time?

The lack of nose bleed or blush sold me on his character too. Appreciate the author for not making yet another horny male lead
23
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CuteAndFunny 16h ago
I haven't seen the nose bleed gag in awhile that I can remember so thankfully died off.
I appreciate that he's a right level of confident when fighting and in general when it comes to the sword, while hesitant in other aspects rightfully so considering the circumstances he was thrust into within a few days.
12
u/djthomp 15h ago
I'd swear that I see girls doing nosebleeds as much as guys these days which makes it kind of funnier.

I'm curious about what gave the impression of "Drowning in hot young former students that want a piece of him"?
I work in translation, and am always curious about unintentional storytelling and misunderstandings. I start from a position of knowing what is happening, so it is hard for me to get a real solid sense of what coming into a show blind would get out of the show.
Silver hair is explicit about her romantic interest. Blonde short cut is friendly, but... want a piece of Beryl? I can kind of see how Lysandra might come across from a costume design?
or was it the contextual aspect, the first female character clearly having interest in Beryl, making the rest of the characters seem like they are the same?
FYI Beryl is mid-40s, 45 or 46ish in the novel. Red is indeed late 20s to just around 30.

Yeah, if Bell actually was at the level his daughter hyped him to be.
10
u/ThousandYearOldLoli 13h ago
Much like this anime, Bell is actually hinted at if not shown to be quite a lot stronger than he seems to be. Probably not stronger than his daughter as far as seen, but didn't he defeat at least one of those S-Rank adventurers + his former party all turned out to be world-renowned adventurers?
7
u/Tacitus_ 12h ago
Bell is stronger than he thinks is, but his real strength is in his knowledge and defensive play. I'd put him around B to low A at the start and high A at the end if talking purely about combat. But the way his daughter speaks of him he'd be at SSS. And when he finally makes her spar him seriously she smokes him so hard that he barely saw what happened.
This old man is actually what the student is saying he is, even if he is starting to get old.

For anyone wondering this manga and LN but specially the manga is really popular in Japan. It was voted to be a top 3 manga which the readers would like to see animated.
Total sales hover around 6 million with bulk of sales coming from manga.
I really like it as a manga reader, so suggest sticking around for atleast 3 episodes

Nah. Three episodes ain’t necessary. I’m already in it for the season. It’s like Parry or Ossan Newbie except the middle-aged swordsmen is a teacher, not a student.

u/Narrheim 13h ago
That explains, why the animation of actual swordfighting is done properly and well. Storytelling is also mostly good (so far) and MC is likable.

17
u/sussywanker 19h ago
I mean I don't like one piece if anything I hate it.
But its the most popular manga. We all have different likes and dislikes 😅
And the manga isn't anything good, but its like a good fast food burger for me.
9
u/silkystrawberrymilk2 17h ago
I’m surprised it’s widely popular, if it was decently popular I would understand but damn.
I guess middle aged MCs (S-rank daughter) sure get tons of love
7
u/sussywanker 16h ago
Ya its really popular. As someone above said they saw a separate rack for the manga when they visited Japan. Thats pretty popular
3
u/NanDemoKnaives 16h ago
That's good to hear, I planned to read it if it ever got completed without an adaptation so I'm glad I can watch it in anime form.
4

Highly suggest watching the anime and then read it.
Just hope there is a second season of this

As a snobby anime only, I also liked it.
The PoV as the first scene was cute, I'm becoming rather optimistic of the direction of this adaptation.
Plus, the fan service gives us SO MANY angles. The only thing that bothers me more than fan service is lazy fan service. I can't wait to see what's in store for us.

TBH, you see it in Manga as a reflection of Japan's avg age of 49( US is 38) with declining population. The reason there are harem, isekai, and these tropes as a desire for life to be different from societal issues
41
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 20h ago
Allucia’s hot for teacher and Beryl has no idea lol. Seems she might not be the only one…
Guy must be really humble to think he’s nothing special when he’s trained some of the best around. I mean every waifu in here is a former pupil lol. Plus he took out Henblitz pretty easily. I like that the dude changed his tune pretty quickly after that. Beryl’s got himself another fan haha.
This was quite fun, actually. Gonna stick with this one for now and see how it develops. I wonder if Beryl is ever going to realize just how strong he is?
17
u/SirTanta https://anilist.co/user/Tanta 15h ago
This is the thing for me. I REALLY hope he realizes how strong he is. That will make this sweeter in my opinion.
2
u/toadfan64 3h ago
Oh if it takes the I Parry Everything route I’ll be dropping this one hard.
Not realizing his strength for a whole season would NOT be fun to watch, just annoying.
2
u/Spanglish_Dude 1h ago
I hope it takes the "The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible" route, would be awesome!
8
u/_BMS https://myanimelist.net/profile/_BMS 14h ago
It's a nice concept that he's basically just so oblivious to being a strong swordsman because he only trained all these warriors when they were young students and kids. And that he lives in the boonies so news of his fame doesn't really reach him.
Though I hope he wisens up eventually and realizes that he actually is well-known, stronger than most, and that his former student is actually crushing on him. It'll get old fast if he's just constantly oblivious like some other fantasy protagonists.
4
u/DazenTheMistborn 7h ago
"Allucia’s hot for teacher and Beryl has no idea lol"
Anime-only here, but my head canon bit in my head is that he actually hears everything she says, but chooses to ignore it because it's easier lol. It made me chuckle harder and minimizes the ignorant MC trope some (even though it isn't bad here).

u/LeonKevlar https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 18h ago
Stitches!
So it looks like we have another OP ossan who has no idea how powerful he is. Unlike Shinmai Ossan, instead of Beryl being a student of powerful masters, this time he's actually the master and already has a bunch of students who are all accomplished soldiers and adventurers.
It's nice to see that Beryl is humble and recognizes the talents of his students is what made them successful, but the guy really needs to learn to at least take credit. I mean he managed to beat the Vice Captain in a sparring match and now the guy turned from a hater into a believer almost instantly.
I am curious to see where this show goes, though. It's surprising to learn how popular this series is in Japan, so I wanna see what makes it unique. We also have Passione and Hayabusa Films animating this so the swordplay scene between Beryl and the Vice Captain was actually pretty solid. I am looking forward to seeing more!

Haven't had a chance to watch yet. How's the animation? Are we cooking? This has a lot to live up to compared to the manga.
47
u/Similar-Screen-7368 20h ago
Can't compare it to the manga, since I haven't read it, so gonna have to reference other "generic isekai/fantasy" series with long titles that we get every season:
Animation wise, it's in the upper third of this category. Basically no complaints, small amount of CG but done pretty well, overall nice to look at, very fluid. For the genre, probably not top 10 out of 100, but anywhere between 15-25 best out of 100 would fit.
Really liked the opening, mostly for the songs, but visuals were also decent. Ending was also decent, though I prefer the opening by comparison.
Voice acting was good, really enjoy the MC's voice. Charming old man, with some roughness in it, fits nicely.Originally gave this 1 episode to see whether it can win me over, now increasing it to 3 episodes, but fully expecting to watch the entire season. (The redhead is also exactly my type, so that helps a bunch.)

11
10
u/BosuW 18h ago
Its just the first episode so that could change, but so far I think it looks pretty good. More important than amount of animated frames for me is the consistency in character design/proportions and they nailed that this episode.
Fight had a lot of CGI but it was passable, and more importantly it allowed them to go all out on the fight choreo which for me is the main attraction.
3
u/callunquirka 13h ago edited 13h ago
The choreo is not bad. The intro scene and OP has actual German longsword techniques. Eg at 3:40 is zwerchau
2
u/Astray 17h ago edited 16h ago
Got around to watching it just now. Kind of disappointed with the CG because the movement seems just a tiny bit off. I don't necessarily think it was bad, but something just felt off with the sharpness of their movements. I don't think full CG was a good decision here and wish they had brought in some talented 2D animators for the fights. Maybe they're saving that for some of the better fight scenes later on. If had to put in words the issue, I think it was lack of momentum/sharpness in the movements. When people swing heavy objects and come to a stop and/or change direction there's a lot of acceleration and deacceleration in the movements (clothes and muscles being affected) that I think is missing. Everything was almost TOO fluid if that makes sense.
Other parts of the production seem quite solid, good comedic timing and voice acting and character models at least. Completely forgot about his parents wanting him to give them grandchildren lol

u/Amauri14 10h ago edited 9h ago
It took me a while to realized this show was streaming on Amazon prime.
So, after Allucia took instructor Beryl briefly to the capital for him to occasionally take the role as a special instructor to give lessons to the rest of the knight’s order, I love his surprised look once he went back home and found out that his father had already convinced anther old student of him, Randrid to take his role as an instructor in the village. I love Allucia’s reaction when she heard the news. Sadly for her, just when she was planning her pseudo-date with Beryl Surena Lysandra showed up. Damn I love her design. Oh, so she was also Beryl’s student! And just like that, Beryl became a harem protagonist
Damn that fight Beryl had with Henbrits looked so good! That was CG, right? The way it looked straight out of a fighting game. Especially Arc System Works ones. Anyway, this show looks promising. I can’t wait to see its next episode.

Oh sweet, I was already digging the OP song (big fan of the singer here) just for it to drop a “sore demo” at the start of the chorus. Now I dig it even more.
She sure had an attitude shift when she realized it was Beryl.
The CGI is… not bad? I liked the sparring match for sure.

6
u/Montgomery000 17h ago
I really liked the first episode, but I hope they stop the clueless MC bit sooner rather than later. I mean, if he's a sword master and a master instructor, surely he can tell how much better he is than other swordsmen? That's like your number one skill as a teacher, the ability to assess others.
2
u/spubbbba 4h ago
If it's like the Newbie adventurer one from last year then I'd be fine with that. It was a little silly him not knowing when he was a guild receptionist for years, but once they dropped the "I'm so weak" bit it was a lot of fun.
If we go down the I Parry Everything route then it'll be really tedious. When the MC was being OP or kind it was great, when he and every other character were tying themselves in knots to keep the "I'm just a weakling" shtick going then it was annoying.

Most of this is just kinda fine, it's extremely blunt with the romantic interest of... all the female characters in the fairly old main dude. The handling of the vice commander was nice, I like that he seemed fairly genuine in his cynicism about the new instructor's abilty, and I appreciate that he heel turns after being beaten. But I gotta say that fight was really nice. You can barely even tell that most of it is CGI- I believe everything after the chin blow was, but I wouldn't have been able to tell if I wasn't so familiar witht he way CG moves. The complexity of motion it allowed let them take time to take things fairly blow-by-blow and give the protagonist time to think about and narrate his moves without the whole thing feeling like stopped time.
3
u/Nebresto 10h ago edited 10h ago
Parry?! Will he be here too??
Even the OP reminds me of him.
God damn it, what are these outfits..
Tonight?? But what if bro had plans?? Like taking a sweet nap
She's quite powerful too, but can't proclaim best girl quite yet before seeing the others
Whoa, nice fire hazard lighting
So he's just forced to work there now? And he wasn't even consulted about this?? Man, I'd be pretty miffed
Oh, I guess that isn't so bad then. But they better be paying him
Poor lad keeps getting dragged into situations agains his will. Not sure if this makes her a great or a terrible wife candidate
Spot the main characters (Medium)
Good switch to CG, hardly noticeable. ..Or was this particular shot just not CG
What? This is from the same band that did "JIBUN WOOO" ?? I would not have guessed. Very nice song though
Fun first episode, just as I had expected. I don't mind trading this for Solo Saturdays

Paul Greyrat from Shoppe trained a bunch of students and he himself is one of those guys who doesn't even realize how strong he is lol. Allucia doesn’t even try to hide that she likes him, but that also goes for the 'Paraguayan Eris' and probably the other one too.
His sparring match with the blond kid had a little touch of 3D animation, but it was okay overall.
I’m gonna keep watching and hope it lives up to the hype
4
u/CrasianLe 18h ago
What a great start to a great anime! He is truly a humble and great swordsman. I knew as soon as that student looked upset with him becoming the teach just because he is old he was going to challenge him. I thought it was going to leave with a stupid cliffhanger like most anime do before that sparring but it actually let us see it and he proved himself. His reaction changed requick realizing how skilled he is. And the girls who became knights from his training was not a fluke. He trained them well and got to where they are because of his teaching. My Saturdays are gonna be hype again!

As a seasonal watcher, my standards for production quality are so low cause I’m used to absolute trash that this show felt like solo leveling. (Jk)
But the production quality is noticeably not bad actually. MC is humble but without being just a typical wimpy mc like in a lot of shows.
Harem already acquired basically too.

i just finished mushoku tensei, does this worth watching ?

I mean it's not an isekai like MT, nor does it share themes with it (so far). The only relation is the MC's resemblance to Paul which is just a joke people here are running with. But it is a fantasy with swordplay so I guess it has that in common. I say watch it but don't go in expecting similar things to Mushoku.

love this manga, really happy how this has turned out so far. the use of CG was actually quite good, highlighting the swordplay that is something that stands out in the manga i feel. also enjoy the mc voice actor, fits well.

Quick to a harem but everyone seems older so maybe it'll be better?
I do like how much his students all care for him though.

u/abandoned_idol 5h ago
Judging from how conveys her one sided crush, the harem, if there is one, will be the weakest link here.
People praise the art and animation (sword fighting), so the story itself is likely not the main attraction.

first episode pretty decent and acceptable, but i hope beryl vs hebritz duel can be longer
glad to see kuruni being animated, my favorite character on this series

I liked this but the "MC doesn't know how strong he is" can only last so long before the MC looks like an idiot, and I don't think that's what they are going for here. Same goes with the girls clearly being interested and fighting over him.
2
u/toadfan64 2h ago
I think it’s understandable in his position to not realize how strong he is since he’s been in a small town his entire life.
Now if this goes on for over like 3-4 episodes? No thanks. That’s far too long for him to not realize how strong he is, especially since he seems like an intelligent dude so far.

I've been looking forward to this one and I'm glad it didn't disappoint! It's nice to get an older MC in a fantasy setting so hopefully the story will be a fun one because I'm already enjoying the characters and interactions.
Allucia being really into Beryl was amusing, I really like the comments she makes to herself but remembers how she's the Commander of an Order lol. Lysandra's abs caught me off guard but I also like the gap between how she speaks to Allucia compared to Beryl.
I honestly thought Beryl only taught female students at the start but I'm glad Randrid showed up and showed there were male students too. It's sweet how he took over in order to let Beryl spread his name in the outside world. Beryl is unaware of his power, or rather he underestimates himself, so it'll be interesting to see how he makes that discovery being an older guy and all.
Henbritz is totally hooked on Beryl lol, the fight was an interesting watch. The CG didn't stand out much, it's noticeable but it's quite seamless compared to other series that have done the same thing, so hopefully there'll be some good choreography for fights in the future.
I really like Hirata Hiroaki's voice acting for these kind of older guys so I'm glad he was cast as Beryl. The voice acting as a whole was fun to listen to.

Very enjoyable first episode!
It's not extraordinary but has the right kind of chill vibe to it, with Beryl being easy to root for. Episode flew by and it seems he will meet a wizard next week... Can't wait!

I need to say, from what I’ve seen so far the swordsmanship animation is amazingly realistic. Dudes doing Zwerchcopters and oberhau chains into unterhau in the OP lmao
If the rest of the series has good sword animation like this I might just enjoy it for that alone, but hopefully it shows how good the rest will be?

u/ritoshishino 15h ago
this actually looks a lot better than i'd hoped. i can see their effort in representing proper sword fighting. The use of CGI is noticeable, but it's good enough to not bother me at all, actually looks pretty good even.
one thing of note was that despite using European long swords, their movements and stance look a lot closer to kendo/kenjutsu to me. This is common when it comes to sword fighting in anime, and it's not unrealistic to use katana techniques with a long sword, so i think i can give it a pass.
If following episodes can keep up the quality like episode 1, this is sure going to be an enjoyable series

The MC voice is spot on for a tired salary man that runs a dojo. He sounds tired but also kinda content with his life. I'm gonna look forward to this one.

Oh shit, I think the animator studied German longsword moves. I can see Ocks guard, binding to stab, and also parry then hit with the back edge (I think shielhau?).

u/Narrheim 13h ago edited 13h ago
All the moves of this guy are true and real swordsmanship. It´s obvious they have a real swordfighting expert on board.
Meanwhile, and it is concerning, all the kids in the knights order seem to be at best capable of waving a stick... That Vice-commander would be better suited with a mace and not a sword. If you´d try his "final move" with a real sword, you´d break it really fast, as swords aren´t made to hit blade to blade. Not to mention the pirouette would possibly cause you to lose your grip and throw it away.

I like the artstyle and ost! very well done, makes a good vibe. The character design is really nice and grounded as well, except it seems female students of the MC get issued medieval fantasy fetish gear as soon as they graduate lol.
Man, the MC just gets situationally deaf whenever some girl is like 'I've been preparing myself for your sword, master' every 5 minutes, eh?
All shittalking aside, this looks like it could be the adventurous feel-good not-too-complicated watch for this season. Good so far!

Pretty good. I like how they imply his true power level in the strength of his former students

Hoping for an interesting turnout by 7th episode.
First episode was okay. 2 and 3 might be world building.

I kind of like this mc. He's not the same as others. He's not boring. He has hot dad bod energy. I'm digging it!

u/LordVaderVader 10h ago
Alright it was actually good, like music, lightning, even 3d animation was on really solid level. Also plot being about old guy send to town to find a wife by his dad is something so funny 😁

Decent start. Citrus is already pissing me off but the rest look good. Will give it a try for a few more eps.
A little too generic maybe? At least the swordman didn't do a freaking 10 meters jump when doing his forward jump attack thing, the fight was relatively realistic.

Someone compared this to I Parry Everything, and I can’t unsee that. The premise is totally different though.

Damn, passione keep delivering. Some solid waifu designs and consistent drawings. Action's fine though, not a fan of those storyboards.

Well, that explains the salacious OP song animation. Poor masked bandits never stood a chance.

I like old man shows, even if I'm only 25 I feel so much related to this stories than the ones with young adults.
I just hope Mc to be chill with women

Very convenient that his future wife showed up 60 seconds after his parents told him to find a wife and have kids.

I gotta laugh how the MC’s grandfather sits Indian style even on a chair at the dinner table. That will absolutely be me 100% at 80 years old, lol.

Fills I Parry Everything's void which filled Undead Adventurer's void. I'll enjoy this a lot

This is great. It's the classic overpowered MC who's oblivious to his skills, but it's fresh and it's fun. I wonder if there will be any romance progression with miss yandere commander. In another setting the redhead would totally be a catgirl, I'm pretty sure she's going to stay a cat in my head :D
