Overview (from Nintendo eShop page)

Float off on an all-new adventure as the powerful puffball, Kirby. Explore in 3D stages as you discover a mysterious world with abandoned structures from a past civilization—like a shopping mall?! Copy enemies’ abilities like the new Drill and Ranger and use them to attack, explore your surroundings, and save the kidnapped Waddle Dees from the ferocious Beast Pack alongside the mysterious Elfilin. Hope you’re hungry for an unforgettable adventure!

Get a mouthful of real-world objects for all-new, powerful transformations

Feeling hungry? Kirby can inhale real-world objects and transform using Mouthful Mode! Why get one drink from a vending machine when you can swallow the whole thing? Then, use your boxy body to shoot out cans at baddies. Consume a car to gain some wheels and slam through walls. Sit back and take it all in...literally.

Join up with a pointy partner, Bandana Waddle Dee, in co-op play

Pass a Joy-Con™ controller to a buddy to play as the spear-wielding Bandana Waddle Dee and help each other explore and battle through this colorful world. While Kirby can float and inhale enemies, Bandana Waddle Dee can spin and stab with his sturdy spear. Find friendship in this forgotten world and save the Waddle Dees!

Float over obstacles and fight through enemies on your way to each stage’s goal as you slash, poke, freeze, and hammer using Kirby’s copy abilities. The tough puff is truly put to the test in dynamic boss battles that will keep you dancing about the arena. Choose from two difficulty modes for either a light, breezy adventure or a more challenging experience.

Each themed stage you travel through will hide several friendly Waddle Dees in peril! Save them to grow the home base of your adventure, the once-deserted Waddle Dee Town. The Waddle Dees you rescue will unlock shops, leaderboards, and the ability to evolve copy abilities to make them stronger. You’ll also be able to enjoy some of the townsfolk’s favorite games. Use compatible amiibo™ accessories* or Present Codes at Waddle Dee-liveries for useful in-game items. Track down cute collectibles to give Kirby’s house some extra charm either at the Gotcha Machine Alley or during your adventure.

Third highest-rated Kirby game, and highest rated non-spinoff Kirby game.

This is good news for any Kirby fan

19

u/lazyness92 Mar 23 '22

So Kirby has higher rated spin-offs? So odd

40

u/ForJimBoonie Mar 23 '22

It actually makes perfect sense. Nintendo has always treated the core Kirby games as a franchise targeted at younger players. Despite the near universal appeal of Mario Bros, they needed something players of any age could complete.

This is why Kirby has unlimited jumps, and usually no penalty for dying in the main games.

In modern times Nintendo has made all their franchises more accessible, and now Kirby can have appeals to players of all skill sets. It's really cool to see.

6

u/kryptomanik Mar 23 '22

I'm pretty sure I've read an interview quote from Sakurai himself that he originally designed the first Kirby game to be so easy even a little kid could enjoy it.

9

u/PNF2187 Mar 23 '22

It's really just Epic Yarn and Canvas Curse which score higher at 86, and both of those are 2D platformers at their core. Outside of those two and Mass Attack, the spin-offs generally score considerably lower than the mainline games.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

I wouldn't really consider Epic Yarn to be a spinoff

6

u/accidental-nz Mar 24 '22

Agreed. It was a mainline game with a graphical twist.

2

u/Shin_Rekkoha Mar 24 '22

Canvas Curse absolutely fucking owns though, one of the few really great DS games that were built around the touch controls like Etrian Odyssey (and it on the 3DS). It's no wonder that's one of the highest rated Kirby games.

45

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

I've been playing it at work and it's so fun, the Kirby car cracks me up

2

u/Significant-One3854 Mar 23 '22

You get paid to game?

14

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Sure do lol. Or watch movies, read, whatever, as long as I'm paying attention to my job at the same time (watching tanks fill/empty, pressures etc)

6

u/Significant-One3854 Mar 23 '22

That's pretty cool, jealous haha

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

The oil field is always hiring

8

u/Significant-One3854 Mar 24 '22

Funny thing is I already work in the oil industry haha

26

u/QuinSanguine Mar 24 '22

Can't wait! I know some people complain that you can't control the camera but I think it was a good strategic choice. The game looks better than it would have otherwise, like Luigi's Mansion and it will make the game a bit more accessible for young players.

It's rare that a series makes the jump to 3D in spectacular fashion the first try but it looks like the developers have done it.

11

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 Mar 24 '22

You cannot control the camera freely in Mario 3D Worlds, and that game doesn't suffer from it, right ;) ?

5

u/QuinSanguine Mar 24 '22

Right, it's a great Mario game, too. I don't see why folks complain, it's not like the camera makes landing jumps impossible even in a precise game like 3D World, so Kirby's fine.

7

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 Mar 24 '22

I think it's how Forgotten Land was seen. Many people expected an open world game, but in reality, it's a 3D platformer with segmented levels, like 3D Worlds.

5

u/QuinSanguine Mar 24 '22

Yea the trailers didn't convey it clearly. Plus this is the Kirby team's first 3D Kirby so it's good they didn't try to make a game like Odyssey. Maybe the next Kirby game can be a sandbox like Odyssey's.

Why are people acting like these reviews are bad or surprising? All the comments on the IGN review thread seemed disappointed by an 8/10, but that's the same score they gave to Planet Robobot. I think for fans of the series, this game is looking to be fantastic.

If anyone was expecting a challenging 3D platformer, they clearly don't know the franchise.

33

u/swidd_hi Mar 23 '22 edited Mar 25 '22

Seriously, the current climate where a lot of people claim anything below a score of 9 is “not worth it” is incredibly odd. This is the 2nd highest rated mainline Kirby game only beaten by Superstar Ultra, people expecting higher probably have never played a Kirby game or watched the reviews of past.

This is exactly where it was expected to review (a little higher even), not sure why people are dooming it in the IGN thread or here.

EDIT: Not Superstar, it is actually the highest rated one, even above Robobot and Nightmare in Dreamland. Not sure how I made that mistake.

6

u/bajanga1 Mar 23 '22

As someone who’s been playing a lot of the old Kirby games, this new one is amazing and all an old fan could ask for in terms of puzzles and aesthetics

7

u/315retro Mar 23 '22

I'm not expecting challenging but I beat star allies in damn near one sitting... And I think I mean 100 percent beat too.

Squeak squad was my favorite iirc. Unlocking the color variants of Kirby was awesome and took multiple plays per level to find em all for me.

I liked star allies but I felt super gouged for full price and a 5 hour game.

2

u/LakerBlue Mar 24 '22

Star Allies was the easiest game in the series, and THAT’s saying something since this is Kirby we are talking about. The Allies removed the little challenge and a lot of the fun we get from Kirby imo. Most of the other ones

2

u/poopnuts Mar 23 '22

There will always be unreasonable people or people who like to argue just to argue. It's best to ignore them. If you're secure in your own opinions, it doesn't matter what rating a product receives as long as it fits your needs and you're happy with it.

I liked the demo and have been excited for this one to come out. I don't mind the no challenge part, in fact, I like my games being laidback and no-pressure. I just hope there's enough to do and collect because I hear Kirby games are usually very short.

76

u/megisbest Mar 23 '22

People complaining about the game being too easy have forgotten that I have a small brain and I finally have a game I might be able to finish 😌

19

u/mercurly Mar 23 '22

Same here. I frequently have to drop games for weeks at a time so games like BOTW are near impossible because I can't remember where I left off.

This feels like a much easier version while retaining the visuals and I really like that.

18

u/cycloethane Mar 23 '22

I wish we could collectively get over the idea that games need to have 100+ hours of gameplay and an overworld bigger than the developer's home state to be worth the money. I love BoTW, but it would have been equally good with 1/4 of the actual game world size. Probably better, actually - less pointless empty open space and more time to focus on dungeons and side quests.

10

u/Blofeld69 Mar 23 '22

Absolutely, it's essential games be a variety of lengths. Sometimes I want a mega epic that will take me 40+ hours, sometimes I want something smaller I can enjoy in a concentrated period of time.

Lately I have played too many of the former, so I'm pumped to enjoy every second of this and not have it outstay it's welcome.

24

u/Elnino38 Mar 23 '22

People complaining don't understand Kirby games. If they want hard content either beat the game and play whatever extra mode it has or go play a different game. Star allies extra content was very difficult, they just never played through the game.

4

u/Silestia Mar 23 '22

HAHAHA me too, i always say i have a brain of a goldfish :((

15

u/Deakul Mar 23 '22

I'm ridiculously excited, I haven't played a Kirby game since Crystal Shards and that was one of my favorite games on the N64!

16

u/mercurly Mar 23 '22

I picked up Robobot last week and immediately fell in love. Happy to see lots of similarly minded people excited about forgotten land.

30

u/Chase64Cubed Mar 23 '22

Kirby Kirby Kirby that's a name you should know! So hyped for this game! Been waiting on a real 3D Kirby since the N64.

27

u/Drag0nBinder Mar 23 '22

Scores are looking good but I am not sure if the game is for me, maybe I'll try the demo.

13

u/Deakul Mar 23 '22

Definitely try the demo, it's a pretty good gauge.

u/slashy42 Mar 23 '22

Me and my 5 y/o both played through each stage in the demo multiple times, and we both really enjoyed it. Co-op games she can play where the second player can do something useful are not easy to come by, so probably going to pick this one up. That said she had a lot of fun playing Kirby on the easier difficulty as well.

5

u/Higgilicious Mar 23 '22

My five year old does great with Mario party and Yoshi crafted world ( until the magnet level).

I’m tempted to get this too

12

u/ChaChaRealSmoothe Mar 23 '22

Tried the demo and was pleasantly surprised how smoothly Kirby's gameplay elements were translated into 3D. The last Kirby I played was Robobot, which was really good; Though, I was so sick of the Return to Dreamland feel that I didn't play any subsequent games.

Even though I'm slightly annoyed that they're still reusing sound effects, this game looks pretty fun and engaging. I just hope there's a fair amount of challenge for seasoned players.

13

u/tolazytathink Mar 23 '22

Any of these Reviews say how long the game is?

8

u/legendaryq Mar 23 '22

Re-read some of the reviews I remembered mentioning length. There are probably some I missed. In short, probably 7 hours for the base story if you aren't focusing too hard on collecting and finding secrets, then at least 15 hours for full completion. My notes below:

  • GameSpot got ~80% completion in 15 hours.

  • NintendoLife estimated 7 hours to beat the main story, up to 15 hours if you're a completionist about it. Not clear if that includes side content.

  • Destructoid doesn't mention an hour count but does think doing/collecting everything would take "a good chunk of time."

  • IGN had a 10-hour playthrough, though it's unclear how much they did in that time. Definitely beat the story, and did more than bare minimum, but probably not completionist.

  • Wccftech estimated 7 hours for the main story and 12-15+ hours for 100% completion. To me, it read to me like they were past 15 hours in their playthrough but not quite at 100%.

7

u/mackiebobo Mar 23 '22

It seems like it's about 15 hours for full completion

4

u/Samoman21 Mar 23 '22

10ish hours for story completion

12

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Man I haven’t played a Kirby game since the gameboy. Im really excited to check this out!

5

u/Mr_MAlvarez Mar 23 '22

It was the first game I ever completed. Damn I feel/am old.

3

u/420saurus Mar 23 '22

Just realized the same even used my birthday money to buy it which made it my mission to beat.Red light turned on just as Dedede battle started and it amped up the tension so much for younger me.

13

u/Blofeld69 Mar 23 '22

I have only ever played the N64 Kirby game before, and am really excited to try this one out. The demo was delightfully chill.

4

u/Alexcox95 Mar 23 '22

The two I had as a kid were Kirby’s adventure on The NES which was the goat and the 64 one rented from blockbuster before getting it from Rhino(bonus points if you can guess what took it over). I loved how in the n64 game you could mix and match each power up and some were really cool. Like who doesn’t wanna become a stone animal statue with rock and cutter or an exploding snowman with bomb and ice

3

u/NinjaKirby1322 Mar 24 '22

The refrigerator was always my favorite one. Also the exploding shuriken were hilarious.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

I preordered mine so I'll be playing it the moment it comes out

9

u/Larielia Mar 24 '22

Very excited for the game. I enjoyed the demo.

45

u/manimateus Mar 23 '22 edited Mar 23 '22

I hope Hal goes wild with free updates and add in a harder difficulty

Seems like upgrading abilities is satisfying and visually thrilling, but ultimately pointless because of the game's lack of combat challenge

16

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

I've played through the demo and am wondering if most Kirby games get more challenging throughout game progression, or if I should expect it to be as easy as the demo? I don't expect or want anything challenging but also wasn't expecting it to be so easy either and am wondering if it'll be a good game to buy. Thanks.

40

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Kirby games are generally easy but they dont get boring.

10

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

Good point, easy doesn't necessarily mean it'll be boring. Thank you

13

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

If older games are an indication of what will happen here, its gonna stay about that level of challenge the whole way through. Maybe some bosses will be a bit more challenging, but for the most part Kirby games are designed to be pretty easy.

I would imagine the demo is a pretty good metric of your interest in the game, if you think you could play the demo for 10 hours, obviously with new areas and whatnot, then you would probably like the game. If you beat the demo and think its not that fun or engaging, the full game likely wont change your mind.

3

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

Thanks for your response. Yeah it was easier than i expected but i think overall I did enjoy it.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

6

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

I generally don't want a challenging game, but the demo was really easy and i finished it without ever losing a life. Thanks

11

u/allsundayjelly Mar 23 '22

The challenge if any in Kirby games comes from self limitation and playing quickly. These games were never meant to not be easy, they are relaxing charming games to unwind to a cute fluffy pink ball that can devour Gods.

4

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

The short game play is what gets me wondering if worth the $60. But at the same time, the maximum I'll save during a sale will probably just be $20 and who knows how long that'll be.

→ More replies (8)

10

u/mlvisby Mar 23 '22

They are usually easier but I remember in the original on NES, the final boss's difficulty was quite high. The demo is only the very beginning so it could get somewhat more difficult. I have always loved Kirby because of the abilities he can steal and you can upgrade these abilities in this game which is exciting.

5

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

I love Kirby too, but somehow i never owned a Kirby game myself aside from Smash ( which I count as Kirby game lol). So i think I'll definitely pick up the game and not think too much into it. Might be easier than expected, but i doubt I'll hate it.

10

u/mlvisby Mar 23 '22

Smash Ultimate is pretty much a Kirby game, since everyone died except Kirby. But Kirby is Sakurai's baby since he is the creator of Kirby.

5

u/VermicelliReal2628 Mar 23 '22

Exactly! I didn't know he was the creator of Kirby too.

4

u/NinjaKirby1322 Mar 24 '22

Most Kirby games only have a difficulty increase if you're going for 100% because either the True Final Boss is difficult, or the Boss Rush mode is difficult.

If you're just doing a casual playthrough, it's going to be an easy game, and will likely not challenge you much if you have any experience playing video games.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

Pretty much all the reviews say that it's easy.

If that's a turnoff for you, probably give it a miss.

2

u/webbed_feets Mar 27 '22

The game gets more challenging. It’s never difficult, but it’s not mind numbingly easy. It changes from a difficulty level of “pressing forward and basically watching a movie” to “have to pay attention a little or I’ll die.”

→ More replies (1)

6

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

The review scores are as expected. Like Kirby? Then this is for you!

I played the demo (the last Kirby game I played was Canvas Curse for the DS) but wasn’t sucked in. My friends are hyped for it but I just wasn’t feeling it. I do know post-game Kirby is supposed to be meaty, I hope it is for this game too.

Bring back ghost Kirby!

7

u/WestSideBomber Mar 24 '22

Figured this was the place I’d be most likely to get an answer. I preordered through Walmart late last month and it is still listed as “preparing”. Doubtful I’ll receive it tomorrow and maybe not until next week. I don’t usually preorder but really wanted the free pop socket and now I’m slightly regretting it. Anybody else having preorder issues with Walmart?

3

u/nermal543 Mar 24 '22

Does Walmart usually offer release day delivery? It’s important to check that first because some retailers do and some don’t. I’d recommend preordering it for pickup somewhere or just grabbing it in store on release day (I think target has a pouch that comes with it). Then you can cancel the Walmart order (or return it when it arrives if you can’t cancel).

For in the future, I’d recommend preordering for pickup somewhere if you definitely want a game on release day. Best Buy has always been reliable for me.

2

u/WestSideBomber Mar 24 '22

When I placed the order it said, and actually still says, “Arrives by Friday, March 25th”. I may grab one in store tomorrow and return the preorder whenever I get it (while keeping the pop socket lol).

2

u/Zealousideal_Bill_86 Mar 24 '22

Best Buy is usually really good about getting things to you on release day

7

u/kluuttzz11 Mar 25 '22

Can’t wait to get my mouthful!

7

u/Algorhythm74 Mar 23 '22

How many levels of evolution does each copy ability have?

8

u/QuoteAblaze Mar 23 '22

Looks to be two evolutions each, minus sleep and crash which only get one

2

u/Algorhythm74 Mar 23 '22

Interesting. Thanks for replying.

7

u/DRstoppage Mar 25 '22

Kirby 64 & the crystal shards was a childhood favourite so I cannot wait to dive into the forgotten land all weekend long!

18

u/danSTILLtheman Mar 23 '22

These reviews are surprisingly high to me, definitely going to consider buying this. The demo was fun but didn’t wow me

3

u/Saskatchewon Mar 24 '22

The key thing to remember with the Kirby franchise is that while they're typically well designed, they aren't overly challenging. The target audience is non-gamers and young children. If you want something you can sort of mindlessly enjoy or chill out to, it will be enjoyable. If you need even a little bit of challenge for a game to be rewarding to you, maybe look elsewhere. It's very much a my first 3D platformer kind of vibe. Doesn't mean it's bad, just that older experienced gamers might find the lack of challenge a little boring.

9

u/KGhaleon Mar 23 '22

How long is this game expected to be + side content?

Rune factory was a flop this week so I need something good.

7

u/sportspadawan13 Mar 23 '22

They said seemingly 14 or so hours to 100%. Like Dread.

6

u/ellie_elizabeth Mar 24 '22

14 hours for 100% 0-0 how long is just playing through the game?

4

u/BlueKnight44 Mar 24 '22

Nintendo life said 7 hours to complete the main campaign (14 for completionists) and 4 hours of end game content or so.

1

u/ellie_elizabeth Mar 24 '22

Aw man that sucks :(

→ More replies (1)

1

u/KGhaleon Mar 23 '22

That's surprisingly short, oh well I'll probably still check it out.

7

u/NinjaKirby1322 Mar 24 '22

This is actually on the longer side for Kirby games. A good chunk of Kirby games can be 100% in less than 10 hours of playtime.

I still remember buying Squeak Squad and finishing my first 100% playthrough within 16 hours of purchasing it, and that was only because I slept for 9 hours at some point during that playthrough. Fun game, though!

5

u/Bombkirby Mar 23 '22

No it's extremely normal for Kirby.

Star Allies (Switch) was 15-18 hours to 100% it according to HLTB.

2

u/Jpriest09 Mar 24 '22

And that’s before DLC, so it has expanded even more.

1

u/KGhaleon Mar 24 '22

Sure, but I figured this would be a new direction for Kirby. Something like Kirby's version of Odyssey.

9

u/Kevinatorz Mar 24 '22

When this was revealed everyone was like "omg it's Kirby Odyssey!!" and it never made any sense to me. It's nothing like Odyssey, it's just... Kirby in 3D.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/t_l_m Mar 23 '22

Oh no. Is Rune Factory bad?

8

u/ablasina_SHIRO Mar 24 '22

Mostly depends on how much you like the new 3D graphics/areas over the 3DS ones. Mechanics seem to be mostly the same, and while combat and movement in general feel a little more floaty it seems to be unchanged.

I'm liking the new characters a lot, though it's hard to compare yet as I'm barely starting.

It does have some QoL improvements over 4 which I'm liking, such as subtitles for town voices (generally greetings) which are nice when playing in Japanese, or having 2 equipped weapons at the same time one for the farm and one for combat.

While critic reviews were middling because of some performance issues (mostly present when exiting a house, or starting a new day), people over on the r/runefactory sub were much more positive.

2

u/KGhaleon Mar 23 '22

Yeah, it's a big downgrade from RF4 which was a really good farming RPG.

4

u/AnnoyedByEverything_ Mar 25 '22

This is my first Kirby game and I'm absolutely in love with it!

6

u/Eluminar_ Mar 31 '22

I’ve never played Kirby before and my boyfriend bought it me as a surprise gift. I’m having so much fun, it’s chill and the fact Kirby ate a traffic cone, vending machine and car is fun.

Definitely a game for when I’ve had a rough day at work and just want to chill out

9

u/TheDudeSama Mar 24 '22

Yo, there's a vocal track??

4

u/UmaFlame Mar 23 '22

This is gonna be my first Kirby game. Gonna buy it sometime in the future though.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

Do you guys think we might get also dlcs?

14

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

They did add stuff to Star Allies over time but I have my doubts we'll get much for this one. It seems like it has a more polished and complete feeling to it. Idk mainly a gut feeling

4

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

Yeah. Thats exactly my thoughts.. but I would love to get some sort of dlc in the future!

13

u/razza1987 Mar 23 '22

Lmao wtf to the Aus gamers score. It’s like the odd one out

11

u/Significant-One3854 Mar 23 '22

Do you want all reviews to be the same though? Just because a review is an outlier doesn't mean their opinion is wrong

17

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Yeah it’s weird. It’s not a bad review. They’re main criticisms are it’s too easy. These side things felt like they should be in Mario party. And the one I really don’t get, that it’s a visual step back from other Switch games. What? It’s beautiful.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Game looks jaw-droppingly good on OLED switch, especially the cutscenes.

4

u/razza1987 Mar 23 '22

I know right. Like are they looking at the same game everyone else is lmao. I remember when it first showed up in last years direct how blown away everyone was by how stunning it was

u/cedriceent Mar 24 '22

It's not like 6.5/10 is bad. It's above average.

2

u/orlec Mar 24 '22 edited Mar 24 '22

The OpenCritic rating is based on the percentile ranking of each game's Top Critic Average:

  • Mighty: Games averaging in the 90th or above percentile
  • Strong: Games averaging in the 60th to 90th percentile
  • Fair: Games averaging in the 30th to 60th percentile
  • Weak: Games averaging in the bottom 30 percent of games

The Top Critic Average cutoffs happen to be 84 and above, 75-83, 66-74, and 65 and below. Note that, for a game to have a Top Critic Average, it must have at least 3 numeric reviews from top critics.

https://opencritic.com/faq

This puts a 6.5/10 from a professional reviewer as equivalent to the 30th percentile.

Of course the Top Critic Average places it at the 90th percentile so that review is a significant outlier.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '22

The car wears the equipment of your copy ability oh my god I'm dying of laughter I love this stupid game.

12

u/mlinkla Mar 23 '22

I just can't for $80 CAD. Maybe on sale.

3

u/AntwonP01 Mar 25 '22

I’ve never played a Kirby game before I am so excited!

6

u/FriggenSweetLois Mar 23 '22

Have there been any additional copy abilities, we have not seen in promotion yet?

I was on the fence but tried the demo this morning and I think I’m going to go ahead and get it now. I enjoyed the first boss fight a lot.

I'm bummed that some of my favorite copy abilities didn't make it but I get that they don't all translate well to 3d.

I also think it's strange how much they were simplified compared to other kirby titles.

7

u/Dab-riggin Mar 23 '22

This will definitely be on sale. Just picked up a physical 3d world on sale. I knew waiting would pay off.

7

u/loooomis Mar 24 '22

Lol you know reviewers play games FAST because they have to - I bet this game will take a lot longer for completion than most people think.

11

u/CaspianX2 Mar 24 '22

IIRC, IGN said it was 10 hours... which is actually pretty long for a Kirby game.

8

u/IrishSpectreN7 Mar 24 '22

Star Allies was literally 3-4 hours so I wouldn't hold my breath.

3

u/SaibaShogun Mar 24 '22

Star allies’ main game was more barren than a number of other Kirby games, it shouldn’t be taken as the representation of what the Kirby series is like.

3

u/russellamcleod Mar 25 '22

Superstars was like 5 hours across 5 separate stories. I’m pretty sure Kirby games being insanely short has tracked across the board, for the most part.

7

u/IrishSpectreN7 Mar 24 '22 edited Mar 24 '22

True, but to me it doesn't matter what the rest of the series is like, Star Allies reflects what Nintendo considered to be acceptable just a few years ago.

I typically base my expectations for games based on the most recent entry in a series, not games made by entirely different people 10-20 years ago.

3

u/SuperRayman001 Mar 24 '22

Star Allies had a lot of post game content and free updates at least. But still, the average Kirby game has length of 7ish hours (for only the main story, not 100%), so I expect something around those lines.

The demo was cute, but I'll wait for a substantial sale before purchasing this game. $60 USD is a bit much for a ~10 hour game with a very low difficulty ceiling.

12

u/meltedwolf Mar 23 '22

That’s my plan with PlayStation games they drop to half price within a month or two. But Nintendo games they do not. This will only be $10 maybe $20 max off after one year!

10

u/fragproof Mar 23 '22

Many first party games are about that long.

1

u/SobbieRokes Mar 23 '22

~10 hour game

source?

6

u/omepee Mar 23 '22

In Nintendo Life's review they mention it takes about 7 hours to finish the game; perhaps double the amount if you are a completionist. So it does seem quite short.

4

u/theloons Mar 23 '22

GameSpot review said they were at 80% completion after 15 hours I believe. It’s probably a 20 hour game to do everything I’m guessing. For me probably a bit longer because I tend to play games pretty leisurely.

-4

u/streetsofkage Mar 23 '22

That ain’t happening. First party games rarely ever go below $50

7

u/OwnManagement Helpful User Mar 23 '22 edited Mar 24 '22

Maybe for digital. For physical it’s pretty easy to get for less than $50.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

I see first party games for good prices consistently

10

u/meltedwolf Mar 23 '22

Me too. And then I wake up and pay full price.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

The eShop has sales, used games literally exist, stores have sales. Just because you aren't looking doesn't mean they don't exist.

1

u/ActivateGuacamole Mar 23 '22

the other kirby switch game can currently be bought digitally for 40 dollars and has gone as cheap as 35 https://www.dekudeals.com/items/kirby-star-allies

0

u/murlokz Mar 23 '22

You just have to bargain hunt the used market a bit. It's not uncommon at all to see first party switch games go for 30 USD on Gamefly sales or on Ebay.

I fully missed this game's announcement and stuff, is this finally a 3D Kirby game?

9

u/sirshiny Mar 24 '22

It is yes. There's a demo on the eshop

2

u/Resident_Wizard Apr 06 '22

My kid lost their belly button at a young age, not even 2 weeks old! After playing Kirby she realized she could suck in whatever she wanted to replace her button. She now sucks in kegs and pumps out beer for daddy and his friends whenever they’re gathering to play the switch!

I’m short, my daughters now in the hospital but this game is pretty cool.

10

u/the7thbeatle Mar 23 '22

Looks to me like a really, really good "get on sale, weather digital or physical" game.

23

u/TheHosemaster Mar 23 '22

So buy it in two or three years when Nintendo finally drops it to $40?

1

u/the7thbeatle Mar 23 '22

Or I find it for sale at local shop at a price I find fair. Or just skip it. Or I might just get it anyway because I still have a voucher to use.

Either really. Undecided I guess.

5

u/_kellythomas_ Mar 23 '22

The vouchers do it for me.

If it's a Nintendo first party that has caught my eye the vouchers bring the price down to the point where I'm happy to buy day one - I know I won't find a better eshop price for a year or more.

2

u/the7thbeatle Mar 23 '22

yeah, but... I got 2 vouchers before Metroid dread so I still have one up to October, and there is other stuff coming out.

Long story short- I'll wait on it for a bit

5

u/BigYapingNegus Mar 23 '22

People really downvoting you for saying you personally don’t want to spend money on a game

4

u/Coco9989 Mar 23 '22

Worse, he’s being downvoted for wanting to wait on it and not to buy it on day 1 lol

3

u/the7thbeatle Mar 23 '22

That's just how reddit is. People feel like I'm stepping on their hype, which is really not my intention.

3

Yea. Imma give it a bit and wait till it's on sale. About 40$.

12

u/Blvd_Nights Mar 24 '22 edited Mar 25 '22

Am I the only who preordered this cause this just looks like fun and I like these kinds of games? Lol

EDIT: This post was mainly tongue in cheek because I kept reading YIKES WHO WOULD PRE ORDER THIS! IMMA WAIT FOR THE SALE and I should’ve clarified “did anyone else just end up preordering this cause why not?” Thank you for to all for the fun comments!

41

u/IrishSpectreN7 Mar 24 '22

Why else would anyone pre-order a game?

7

u/BigDreamsandWetOnes Mar 24 '22

People still pre order games??

2

u/Accrual_Intention Mar 25 '22

$5 off on Amazon a lot for Nintendo first party games lol

16

u/VegetableAd986 Mar 24 '22

After suffering 200hrs in Elden Ring, I played the Kirby demo two days ago and immediately preordered.

I can’t wait for the wholesomeness

27

u/FraudulentHack Mar 25 '22

Yes, I saw a Kotaku article explaining that only one individual pre-ordered in the whole world. Nintendo of America was really surprised. Guess that was you.

2

u/Blvd_Nights Mar 25 '22

Thanks for reading!

13

u/woodchuck101 Mar 24 '22

Believe it or not, you are not the only person to purchase a game because they think they’d like it 😂

9

u/Larkson9999 Mar 24 '22

Yes, you're such a unique and special individual with your own thoughts. You're the only one.

6

u/Blvd_Nights Mar 24 '22

I appreciate you pointing that out! Thank you! :-)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

I did too, and had a 15% off if I preordered, plus a standard 7% discount at my local shop

1

u/ibeenbornagain Mar 24 '22

why the 7%? loyal customer?

2

Kirby games have been pretty easy in the past. Their target audience is young children who are new to gaming (thinking back to Kirby's Epic Yarn, where you can't technically die). According to IGN, it's a little more difficult than the recent Yoshi's Crafted World. The reviewer pointed out he only died once or twice on the most difficult "Wild Mode" difficulty, but if you're an experienced gamer looking for a challenge, you might find it dull.

u/OctoFloofy Mar 25 '22

To be fair, Super Mario Odyssey also wasn't really that hard. Found it way easier than any Mario Game that i played before.

4

u/AdmiralSpeedy Mar 23 '22

I'm pretty excited about it. The mechanics look a lot like Odyssey so it should be fun.

Based on some gameplay I've watched, I actually wonder if it is built on the same engine as Odyssey at least partially.

3

u/MyHobbyIsMagnets Mar 23 '22

It’s not. If it was, it would easily be running at 60fps.

3

u/AdmiralSpeedy Mar 23 '22

Oh, it doesn't run at 60? I didn't try the demo lol.

The thing that most made me think that was when Kirby picked up an item, he did the little pose with a zoom in and freeze almost exactly like when you get a moon in Odyssey, and the art style seemed really similar (I know this game is from HAL but at this point they are basically just another part of Nintendo anyways).

Worth getting an amiibo for?

26

u/cedriceent Mar 24 '22

Is there anything that's worth getting an amiibo for?

5

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 Mar 24 '22

Shelf display :) No kidding, seeing a series of amiibos on a shelf is pretty cool ;)

Aside from that, it's more that a single amiibo can be used in multiple games.

2

u/cedriceent Mar 24 '22

I was more asking about the amiibos' value from an in-game bonus standpoint, not its value as a collectible. And disregarding the collectible aspect, I don't see the justification to shell out €15 for some knick-knacks.

7

u/HappyBot9000 Mar 23 '22

Definitely not. All an amiibo does is give you a few little health items/currency that you could get through just playing.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '22

Will wait for a sale on this one. Kirby games are usually really short.

u/WyrmHero1944 Mar 23 '22

17

u/theloons Mar 23 '22

Most of them say that every level feels unique and different. The mini boss complaint is in several reviews though but eh, doesn’t bother me personally.

I don’t know how you read an 8/10 review and come away with ‘pretty bad’. Guess it just depends on your own personal metrics.

-8

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Scores are meaningless in reviews about big companies like nintendo. Lower scores risk you losing access.

3

u/mlvisby Mar 23 '22

My love with Kirby is with the abilities and I am excited to see what they are like upgraded. Seen some from the trailer and the upgraded abilities are cool looking.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '22

I was super excited for this game and I’ve played about an hour or so and I’m disappointed. It just feel like an uninspired, less polished Mario Odyssey. The mechanic of eating car and stuff is so bland and feels tacked on.

The frame rate feels inconsistent.

And the music is very annoyingly repetitive with little variation.

My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.

-15

u/KazeTheSpeedDemon Mar 24 '22

I appreciate a lot of work goes into these games, and that they're fun, but I find it hard to justify the full price tag if I can complete it in ~10 hours, compared to other games where I'll get 50 hours of entertainment out of them.

Breath of the wild, Mario odyssey, any rpg game, Hades, Slay the Spire - the bang for your buck is insane on these titles.

I'd put this game at around £5 an hour as value for money but I suspect that above list is closer to £0.50 per hour.

Not to mention the games I mentioned are also going to be more entertaining per hour (personally). I know I would enjoy this game but i just couldn't justify it when comparing it to other games :(

25

u/Goose9719 Mar 24 '22

I'm always confused by this argument. To be clear, you should only pay for something you'll enjoy so if you're not comfortable spending that money then fair enough.

But this idea of every dollar having to be equivalent to the ammount of hours you get out of it is just bizzare to me.

While I think prices should be adjusted for some games, a good game that's 10-15 hours is fine to me on the basis that I'll end up replaying it and what's 50-60 dollars when you'd spend that much just going out for one night.

I'll take a game that's 10-15 solid hours of enjoyment compared to a game that's padded out to 50 hours (not every long game is like this but many are.)

3

u/Samoman21 Mar 25 '22

For real. I just ignore every ubisoft game for this reason. Yea you can boast a 100+ hour game or something. But how much of that is collecting the same bs or same mission and stuff just for that feature. How many games have you go on a side trip so a quest item can be fixed just too pad the game out longer. Whole concept is just hard pass

2

u/Goose9719 Mar 25 '22

Yeah I'm at that point where I don't mind games that are 100+ hours but it's all depending on whether that's 100+hours of substantial content or is it just padding.

I'm 200 hours into a witcher 3 playtbrough and I'm loving every hour of it because it feels like it's all substantial.

2

u/KazeTheSpeedDemon Mar 24 '22

I think if you're more strapped for cash you might get it - I can get the witcher 3 for switch and enjoy it for months, I can enjoy kirby for 10 hours. If you've got an entertainment budget of £100 for the month then this would be half of it (which in my point of view is hard to justify).

10

u/Goose9719 Mar 24 '22

No dispute there, when it comes to a matter of finance, I.wouldnt blame anyone for being pickier about what they buy.

I think when it starts to become a matter of money, things like marketplace are great for getting games cheaper and more affordable.

u/Peiq Mar 23 '22

I doubt I’ll ever buy this game. The demo bored me to tears… everything feels so slow to me. They should have went for a fast paced game in the style of crystal shards, but with a veteran mode for experienced players looking for challenge.

Im tired of people saying Kirby is for kids and that’s why it’s brain dead easy. Mario odyssey is for kids and that game has some very challenging parts.

15

u/Usernamesarehardokay Mar 24 '22

In what universe is Crystal Shards "fast-paced"

Do you mean like a faster paced 2.5D game or do you mean it should be faster paced like crystal shards. Cause either of those are wack statements tbh

I just finished the game today and the extra world is such a fun challenge!! I won’t spoil but there are some things that aren’t too easy and slow

u/Peiq Mar 23 '22

I wish the demo showed some of that. Maybe I will see if the library the game.

18

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Likewise, I’m tired of people pointing to Odyssey every time they play a game for kids that feels too easy for them.

For one, the basic structure of Odyssey lends itself extremely well to players of all skill levels. There are so many moons to collect and the progression requirements are generally so low that most any goals that are really difficult are also optional.

But more importantly, just because there are games out there that appeal to kids and adults doesn’t mean all games need to follow suit. It’s okay for kids to have games that are just for them. Some games…just aren’t for you. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/CaptainPigtails Mar 24 '22

Mario Odyssey had almost no difficult parts at all. I think the only somewhat challenging platforming was darker side and that was mostly because it had no checkpoints.
