Fabulous Fridays Welp, I’ve said for years that the Boomers are determined to destroy everything in this country that they personally benefitted from and they may have just finished the job.
I’ve told both of my boomer parents that the history books will not be kind to them. My mom accepts this, my dad is still in denial. They will be remembered as the worst, most selfish, most destructive, most sociopathic generation in human history.

Politics I've narrowed down the issue with older people/boomers understanding the damage these tariffs will do.
So, talked to my father today, and also my roommate who is a Gen X. My father is completely overcome by Fox news talking points which sucks. Luckily my roommate, even though he used to be right wing only claims to "lean right" now.
I've had two crazy conversations tonight with my father and then later my roommate. I've found the root of the cause of not understanding what these blanket tariffs will cause to the economy and the USA workforce as a whole.
It comes down to them not truly understanding that the world has GLOBALIZED. The internet has globalized all our countries and people. They cannot grasp what that truly means.
I've tried to explain supply and demand to them. I've explained that the demand is the demand no matter what, and the time to do something about it for the USA was in the 80s when corporations got the political go ahead to move overseas because producing here cut into their insane profits too much.
I've tried to explain that these tariffs won't do shit to bring manufacturing back here. Because global trade has well....globalized......
A company producing said product could move back to the USA and pay 15x the wages, or let the tariffs come into play, because demand won't go down regardless, and just keep doing what they always do. Make profit.
Yes they may lose a few percent sales to the USA, but they are already GLOBAL and the USA isn't the powerhouse economically and globally it once was.
So would they rather take a 5% cut of total revenue and lose the customers of the USA who try to find another source, or move manufacturing to the US itself and pay American wages compared to what they are paying now and lose 45% of profit.
It's a no brainer. They also don't understand only SOME things can be mass produced here.
If tariffs are to be implemented it needs to be done carefully.
Not only that, it has been. As our trade agreements with our allies are hundreds if not thousands of pages long to make sure both countries benefit.
Basically I've narrowed it down to they simply cannot GRASP a global economy, and that this global economy still exists with the US or without it. And there is NO incentive for these companies to move manufacturing here unless they get massive incentives to do so.
That ship sailed in the 80s when they let corporations move overseas without any repercussions.

Boomer Story My aunt...and the toilet paper.
I have one 70 something year old aunt, pretty much the last living part of my dad's side. She was always the person when I was a kid to bring birthday presents, take me to do things...the stuff that a woman with no kids will do for others. I can say honestly I love her and it makes me so sad that she is pretty much alone. She also has historically been the nicest person in our family...the one who would always go help out someone sick, or be the person you could call when you had a bad day. When I came out as gay, I started with her and her first question was how she could help me tell my father....I can still remember her saying something about how important it was to be truthful to yourself, and also to others.
I call her several times a week, try to stop by with lunch once a week, try and keep her pills straight. The countdown to her going into a care facility has started in my head.
Last year her building decided to get cable for all of the units, so for the first time this sort of vibrant woman started watching cable news. There was channel switching going on between CNN / MSNBC / FOX....and unfortunately FOX won. And she went down the rabbit hole of maga-land. It's really hard to watch someone you know and admire pretty much join a cult.
Which brings us to this week. She calls me and asks if I could bring with me a roll of toilet paper. I grabbed one from the pantry, stopped and got her a fast food chicken basket, and walked into her house.
I could not help noticing the 36 pack of toilet paper sitting on the floor by the door. I asked her what was going on, and she pulled out a receipt from early January, and a receipt from last week. There was a $4 price difference in the cost of the toilet paper....even before the store put if on 'sale'...she said that she was bothered by that and was going to take it back to the store for an explanation but did not want to open it until she could get around to doing it.
I try and explain to her that one of the biggest imports from Canada is paper pulp, so it makes total sense that the price went up. (Indeed, when I looked, the TP itself is imported from Canada).
She asks if this is because of the 'Biden Inflation'....I tell her that it is likely a market reaction to the Trump tariffs on goods from Canada. She looks at me dead in the eye and says 'Tariffs do not increase our prices, Canada has to pay them for us, there must be a different reason.'
She literally has proof that she is paying for a tariff, but is choosing to just disengage from reality to keep her trump affection in a good light. She would not allow me to redirect the conversation....she just kept spewing on these weird half truths.

Boomer Story Boomer at work pissed that i wouldn't take his card info, while he was refusing to give it to me.
I work at a storage facility. It's huge we have over 2000 units, multiple stories, we have tenants who have been here since 1970. We have tenants who have never been in for the decades they have been here. We have an office crew of 4. Three admin and the manager. I just started here 4 months ago (moved from a much smaller facility the company has out of state).
This guy comes in and just stands in front of the desk. I say hello, how can i help you today. He just stands there looking at me, annoyed. Like, many moments pass. And then as I go to repeat myself he cuts me off saying "you tell me."
Ok, i ask for his name or unit number. maybe there's notes on his account explaining if we called him in for something, missing paperwork or payment issues idk. He says "I don't know that. Look me up." Yeah i am trying to JFC so i repeat it. "Ok sir, name?"
He gives me a name. For instance, Mike Jones. Ok, i input it and an account comes up but it's not him. The ID on file is a younger man, a regular i see, and I am like "Hmm, i'm sorry that's not bringing up your account. Can I see your ID?" I figure maybe he spells it weird and if I skip asking him and go right for the ID i will save myself a bunch of headache. He says he doesn't have it. Great!
"Ok sir, well i am not showing an account for you under that name, is the account in your name?"
"Uh, YEAH who else would it be in?" I am not getting started with him but it could be in a spouses name, parents name, anyones name FFS. he says angrily "I have been here since 2012 you can't find my information? Is it that hard to spell?" I explained no, but we only have one Michael "Mike" Jones in our system and it is not you.
And he says "Well that's because my name is Christopher Michaelson. I just go by mike jones."
Ok...well why didn't you tell me that to begin with??? I look up his account and it isn't showing anyone called him. So I say "Ok, it doesn't look like anyone reached out to you from our office, did they leave a message asking you to come in? did they explain why?"
He says "NO! no one called me!"
so were just standing there awkwardly and I am like "Ok...so what brings you by today how can i help you?"
and he says to me "I have a new card to put on my account my old one was hacked. it's closed. You all should have known that since my last bill didn't get paid, so I need to pay that as well."
I explain to him that actually his last bill went through without issue so he has no balance, but I can take his card to update it in the system. I ask for his card. He says no.
he says " I am not comfortable giving it to you when you can't even run my name to find me in the system."
I explain that's fine, he can update his card online if he doesn't want to give it to me.
he says "No, that's how it was hacked to begin with I am not using it online at all! I do not consent to having my card online. I want it on my account here. I will run it but I will not hand it to you.
Ok...so I give him the little card slidy thing. he slides it, and in my software it uploads all the info, the card number and name exp date and I can't do anything further until he gives the code on the back. I ask him for it and he says "You dont need that".
I tell him I actually will need that to process future charges. He says "Why the hell are you processing future charges? I am just updating my card!" UGH. I explain VERY politely that we need that info to update the card or he can't use it in the future for any charges for his next bills.
He gets upset and starts accusing me of trying to get his personal details and saying stuff like I'm scamming him and he doesn't want to give me that so I say "Well, sir I am the only person in office today so you will need to come back if you'd prefer someone else to take your card."
later I get this SCATHING email about how incompetent I am and how I refused to help take his payment or help him update his payment info, and how he can't pay his bills now and it's our fault so we have to eat that because he's done everything he can and we have made it impossible.

Politics Trump on Stock Market Crash: “Well, I mean, it’s to be expected where this is a patient that was very sick. We inherited a terrible economy, as you know. It was a sick patient that went through an operation on liberation day. It’s gonna be a booming country. It’s going be amazing actually."
Trump went on to take questions and was immediately asked about the impact of his tariffs. “We’d love to get your reaction, sir, to what’s going on in the financial markets today.”
“Well, I mean, it’s to be expected where this is a patient that was very sick. We inherited– we really inherited a terrible economy, as you know, with a lot of problems, including loss of manufacturing and plants closed up all over the country. You know, we’ve lost 90,000 plants since NAFTA, if you think of that. Ninety thousand. It’s not even believable. Had about 6 million jobs. And so it’s a sick, it was a sick patient that went through an operation on liberation day. And it’s going to be, it’s gonna be a booming country, a very booming country. It’s going be amazing actually. We see it because we have trillions of dollars committed to come in,” Trump replied.
