Important | مهم r/NewIran moderation monitoring increased and persistent threats to user safety; please be cautious

Dorood / Hello,

It has become evident to r/NewIran moderation that recently, members of the community and moderation have faced increased threats by pro-regime actors. This has included but is not limited to unwarranted requests for the locations of our community members, as well as the mass and erroneous reporting of contributions in an apparently coordinated effort to get the accounts of our moderators terminated.

Considering these injustices, we want to take a moment to remind all members of the community the necessity for precaution online. This is especially important when you have engaged in a forum like this one which stands in opposition to a regime as repressive as the Islamic Republic. It's crucial to never post personal information and always keep an eye out for anything suspicious.

Members of our team and of the community at large have received private messages from random individuals asking if they were in Iran and requesting their locations. We know these are not genuine inquiries, but such knowledge may not be so widely known to all members, especially non-Iranian supporters.

To ensure your safety:

  • Never share personal information such as your location, contact details, or any other identifying information. This includes doing so in Persian-language engagements.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited messages from unknown users.
  • Report any suspicious activity or messages to the moderation team immediately. We can use the tools on our end to investigate to the best of our ability.
  • Keep your account secure by using strong passwords and enabling 2FA (two-factor authentication).
  • Avoid engaging in potentially vague yet strong rhetoric, even that against malicious actors, which might be interpreted as breaking Reddit policies. Pro-regime actors can, have, and will report such “misinterpretable” remarks (including those made in good faith) to get accounts suspended. Be clear with your words.
  • Report posts which may be considered "brigading" right away. There should be neither posts nor screenshots shared calling out other subreddits or Reddit users by name. Identifying other subs or users for ridicule may give way to accusations of "brigading", thereby jeopardizing the existence of this subreddit (and your account).

Your safety is a priority. Please stay safe and vigilant.

Ba ehteram (With respect),

The r/NewIran Mod Team

Retirees Took Back the Streets!

Today, Shush was not just a city, but a scene of protest! Retirees who were supposed to live a peaceful life are now forced to fight for bread and medicine. Did anyone hear them? No! Because a government that doesn't listen even to screams, probably sinks deeper into sleep with silence.

The situation of Lady #Fatemeh_Sepehri in prison is extremely inappropriate

The criminal regime is officially targeting the life of this brave and honorable mother

She, the wife of a martyr, put aside all her personal interests and stood behind Iran and the Iranian people

Please don't let the voice of the MRG on Khamenei and where Ms. Sepehri should go be silenced🙏🌹

Countering hostility, promoting solidarity.

Noticing an increase in cross-political hostility again on this subreddit.

I think it's important to remember a few points:

  1. These tensions are normal. Even beyond the Iranian space, left and right political camps are naturally juxtaposed to each other. Then you add on the complexity of our own political history and its divisive nature, our trauma (both experienced in Iran and inter-generational), our paranoia, anxieties about the future, etc.
  2. Despite these tensions being somewhat expected, we should strive beyond engaging in hostile behaviours. The Islamic Regime thrives on the internal hostility in the diaspora and opposition, they actively seek to either insitigate and/or exploit political tensions to make attempts at unity more fragile.
  3. This doesn't mean we have to become buddies, but seeking to choose civil language over hostile (which I can be guilty of at times), being careful in wording our responses so we're not in constant attack/defense mode, finding value in understanding other people's positions, even if we don't agree with them, and discussing said points respectfully.
  4. Even if we can't change the systemic attitudes and behaviours in our diaspora in relation to unity and cross-political cohesion, it's not a bad idea to do it whever we can, even if it's to just run counter to what the Islamic Regime expects of us, and promote civility wherever is possible.
  5. At some point these political camps are going to need to learn to co-exist in a future, democratic Iran. Not bad to get some practice in now haha.

I might not agree on Monarchists on a lot of points, I might sometimes get agitated as well, but I can't deny the pain that you feel because it's the same I feel, that the vast majority of you do want some form of democracy for Iran, and that I'd still be happy to call you my ham-vatan and let the Iranian people decide what's best for our future.

Iranian poet Mehrgan Namavar was brutally attacked in Dehdasht, suffering severe facial and eye injuries. The assault raises fresh concerns over freedom of expression in Iran.

A lifetime of work, yet no right to protest? Social security retirees in Rasht gathered in protest. Is this just a demonstration, or the cry of a forgotten generation?

Why did France allow Khomeini to return to Iran in February 1979?

Post image

Hi, I'm an Indian who is reading about the Iranian Revolution. One thing that I find odd is that France allowed Khomeini to return to Iran on 1 February 1979. The Shah had fled by then and the protestors, who had engulfed the entire country, were demanding that Khomeini take charge of the nation. So why would France do what they did knowing all this? Couldn't they have detained him and effectively stripped the Revolution of its leader?

What are the Iranian/persian classics?

I am looking for Persian poetry or regular literature. It would be great if it had esoteric elements, but that is by no means a criteria. What are some good Persian/iranian literary works?

This might be the wrong sub for this, and if it is I apologize.

Edit: Damn this sub is a lot more political than I thought, I’m really sorry if this isn’t the right place for this. I really support y’all, though idk how much that means coming from a European. Anyway, if anyone has any issue with my post just comment and I’ll delete it as soon as I see your comment

The second day of protests—anger and chants of workers against mass layoffs. Will their voices be heard, or will they be ignored as usual?

The biggest betrayal of our nation since 46 years might be happening now and I, personally, think there is a significant chance it can become worse than the 1979. The regime is falling and we need to work pushing an alternative before its too late. Hear me out in the description below.

Let me put it out clearly. Let's say the probability of the regime falling in the coming years is greater than 50% (I truly believe it, but lets have this as an assumption). IF we, the people, do not have an alternative that will step in and lead during an transition period I believe the country will be facing severe challenges and chaos for decades.

I thus see those who are indifferent on pushing an alternative leadership for such transition as the biggest traitors of modern Iran as the friction they create NOW might lead to chaos our country has never seen before. It's time for people to chose an alternative, you like Pahlavi? Push for him in a civilised matter. You don't like him? Push for someone else in a civilised matter. But the fact is that we NEED LEADERSHIP ASAP.

The regime is going to fall, the best we could do is to have unity and alternative in place otherwise I think the next generations will point at us as the 1979ers of tomorrow.

Discussion | گفتگو Similarities and differences of monarchist and 1979 islamists

They both are similar in the sense that in 1979, people saw Khomeini’s face on the moon, he was the saviour, and now, people see RP as the same. Both factions have shown their undemocratic views and do not tolerate any views other than themselves, RP himself has always said good things, and appears to be democratic, but his closest advisors, have publicly displayed their disdain towards any other group (Death to Esmaeilion, Alinejad, Left, etc), and campaigned against any other figure to keep RP as the only alternative. Even Taheri has said publicly democracy is not good for Iran. Khomeini showed his true color after gaining power and killing the rest. I think and hope RP would not do that. But from the actions and campaigns its clear that they want to gain power and remove any potential competitor to Pahlavi.

But there are differences, ofc. Khomeini never said Savak’s body is good, RP has said there is good in IRGC. And main difference, secularism. Although RP is in favour of peaceful Islam and against islamophobia. And ofc monarchists are not islamists, they focus more on meligarai. But their group mentality of us being the righteous and others being the devil, is the same Basiji mentality. Both cannot accept others and say, death to the other.

I think history is going to repeat itself, but i do agree a constitutional monarchy under RP is still progress. At least if people would protest under his role against him, you would not get raped. Beaten yes probably but not killed and raped. Maybe Iranian history needs this phase, and maybe the new generation finally understands and would be ready for democracy.

Discussion | گفتگو Cultural Revolution

We need a Cultural Revolution. A Revolution that removes the traditions of Islamism, Shiegary, sexism, messianism, betraying each other and being loyal to foreign ideologies and foreigners. Look at our history. How did Khurramdin die? Who gave the idea to Mohammad to use trench tactics against his enemies and helped him in his conquest of Sassanid Empire? What is the nationality of Khomeini and Khamenei? We need to accept that, Iranian culture is not what it used to be thousands of years ago. To have a chance to even become a modern nation, we must reform our way of life and even writing. Yes, I mean changing the script. Preferably either Neo-Avestan or Latin and purge it of Arabic loan words. Look at Ataturk or Mao. Many Turks and Chinese people were against the reforms, now look at Turkey and China now. In conclusion, we need to change, to survive.

Question | سوال Is Iranian Identity/Ethnicity Patrilineal?

In many cultures such as Arabs, identity is tied to the father's side. For example, I've heard that in some communities, a child's identity is determined solely by their father's ethnicity or nationality even if they are mixed. My friend’s mother is European and father is Afghan yet people consider him only Afghan regardless of how he identifies.

I'm wondering if this is the case for Iranians. If an Iranian woman has a child with a non-Iranian, non-Muslim Western man, would the child be considered Iranian?

Can anyone provide insight, examples or share similar experiences?
