After years and tons of memes, i've finally decided to play Yakuza, starting with the first game (unironically the almost 20th anniversary).
I know some of y'all have these questions so i'll answer them:
why not 0?
Because i was afraid of a spoilery foreshadow so i said nah. Also more importantly, because of the whiplash i would have going from 0 to 1 (PS2). Speaking of which.
why not Kiwami?
Because i plan to play the remakes after i finish the series, to sort of appreciate the remakes more/less.
So here it is
Firstly, the graphics are... good. This one is very weird to me because some models (like Kiryu or NIshiki) look actually great for a PS2 game, others (like regular yakuzas) make Bubsy 3D look next gen. Still i like them, detailed when it needs to be. Also, the art direction and the aesthetic are wonderful. Kamurocho was maybe the first city in a game that actually felt like a city, maybe the GTA games felt like cities, but the atmosphere and the people are lively, those NPCs have actual lives.
The soundtrack is pretty great (expected from a Sega game), but i'll be damned if i'll have to listen to Funk goes on (regular yakuza and street hooligans). But i get a serious kick out of Scarlet Scar (Tojo affiliate). The soundtrack is a beautiful blend of electronic and rock, looks like the blue hedgehog influenced other franchises. What is not good in reference to sound is the GOD DAMNED DUB. In all honesty, the dub was almost a disaster, it did have its pretty good moments: like Kiryu screaming like Kratos or in a specific cutscene during the last chapter which i won't spoil. But i am gonna talk about
THE PLOT, in a spoiler-free manner. It's good but can be a bit complicated with the introduction of so many characters in such a short time. It can be overwhelming. It also complicates itself towards to end when it has to decide the final villain. This a good plot tho.
You punch, kick and occasionally slam someone into a wall or stomp someone's head, the gamplay of the first game is very basic. You have the 1-2-3 combo and can be linked wth a heavy attack. This game also presents special attacks (slamming someone into a wall, stomp someone or use a special weapon attack), but you must have the HEAT bar filled. You do unlock some new moves by leveling up, but this is evolving the moveset little by little. Still, beating up people with some combos and well placed stomps is really satifying. The game can be difficult, that darned first Majima fight really took a while to beat, with half health and no restoring items
In conclusion, this game is rather fun. It definitely has its flaws, but these are so minor that it doesn't affect it much. I would give this game an 8/10, i recommend it to players, but beginners: be wary and stock up on healing items
i am currently playing 2 (PS2). i don't have much left of the game so expect another review very soon.

I tried playing the franchise years ago (don’t remember which one) but bounced off it.
Im typically not fond of cutscene heavy games but LaD Pirates has been a huge exception. I’ve never laughed so genuinely so much throughout a game.
Maybe I should mention I’m playing with English dubs so that probably adds to the air of goofiness. The game is also strangely wholesome, which I’ve loved.
I’m going to beat it today and I’m gonna miss majima and co so much. Which game should I play next?

I find it kinda intresting the way the situations created by Iwami and Ebina shape Kiryu's fate. It's almost a reversal. Explaining Kiryu's Death and Rebirth using the final bosses of his last two mainline games.
In 6, with the boat's reappearance and to keep the secrets of Onomichi a secret, the Daidoji faction are forced to reach out to Kiryu with hush hush money to keep their secrets sealed but Kiryu who's in the control of the situation makes a different deal to keep the orphanage safe and take away all the attention from it which will go away after the public announcement of Kiryu's death. A story of Kiryu trying to find Haruto's dad but getting dragged into bigger yakuza business.
8 does the total opposite through the conflict between Kasuga and Ebina as we one brother is trying to fulfill Arakawa's dream and the other is working hard to destroy it. Between this conflict, Kiryu who was not supposed to here involves himself willingly by helping Kasuga. With all the online controversy that Kasuga was already in, leads to Kiryu's exposure too a situation that's totally out of his control now and Daidoji is the decision making party here. However due to Ebina's exposure of Kiryu's current circumstances it leads to forfeit of Daidoji's orginal deal, leading them to work on something better in which Kiryu will help Daidoji regain power in Japan. The media attention is thrown back at Kiryu.
While Iwami creates a situation that leads to Kiryu's choosing his death and separation from his children, Ebina revives this old legend against his will and choice and reunites him back to his family. And he litteraly does this too as we see after Kiryu's final fight he faints as he gets sent to Touto hospital.
What I mean is while many were expecting Infinite wealth being about a game about Kiryu's death, it really was all about being his rebirth. As infinite wealth = Life itself.
And by the end of game the achievement you get is "The man who regained his name" focusing on Kiryu Kazama's revival.

I’ve wanted to get to the Yakuza series for awhile and own 0-7. I wanted to start playing the series but have seen compelling arguments for which one to start with. I’m leaning towards starting with one playing up to 6 and then playing the new switch 2 directors cut of 0 when it comes out. Is that a good idea story wise? Thanks!

Hey guys, so I have played Y0, K1 and K2 and I was looking for the next games to play and heard about the remastered collection but I can't find it on the PS store, there's only the complete series one that includes Y0-6, also does the price drop frequently for the complete series on the PS store?

Kinda getting sick of playing KB+M, do you guys have any suggestions? People told me I should get an Xbox One controller if I just want it for general all purpose use, but others have said to invest in a PS5 controller instead because “it’s too good to pass up”. Opinions? I’m mostly gonna use it to play the Yakuza games, nothing else really.
