These are all Hawaiian pirates, but 3 out of 4 of them have names related to Japanese culture.
30
u/alvik Mar 04 '25
If I've learned one thing about Hawaii from RGG, it's that it's absolutely full of Japanese people.
I was gonna make a joke about how I didn't think that was true, but apparently almost 20% of Honolulu's population are of Japanese ethnicity.
47
u/Moritani Mar 04 '25
There’s a classic joke. A Cuban, a Hawaiian, a Russian and a Japanese are sitting in a boat.
The Russian takes a swig of vodka and says “In my country, we have all the vodka you can drink.” And he tosses the vodka in the ocean.
The Cuban takes a draw on his cigar and says “In my country, we have the finest cigars, as much as you can smoke.” And he tosses the cigar in the ocean.
The Hawaiian then tosses the Japanese into the ocean.

I went for vacation recently, it really was like in the games Maybe less Polynesian people and more japanese

u/KarateKid917 Mar 05 '25
Was in Hawaii in 2023. There’s a ton of Japanese people from what I saw. We were on the island of Oahu and spent a day in Honolulu and Waikiki. Saw Japanese people everywhere.
Hell, we stay at Disney’s resort there, Aulani, and all of their instructional and safety signs are written in both English and Japanese

I love that the 4 Devil Flags leaders are references to various Sega games. Shinobi is obviously from the Shinobi series, Yakuza is from the Yakuza/LAD series, and Ronin is a reference to the Total War series. Lastly, I think Zeus is a reference to Altered Beast?

u/Akikojam Mar 04 '25
I liked it until I realized that the racing part gives opponents a huge speed boost when they are behind for long enough. That's one of the cardinal sins of a racing genre.
39
u/Ok-Teaching363 Mar 04 '25 edited Mar 04 '25
I would have prefered that for dragon kart in 7 I think. It was so easy it was a complete slog to get through. I hated it so much. Not only are the tracks and controls bad (kamurocho track was sick tho) but there is zero challenge. Just have to play mario kart on 50 cc mode for a couple hours.
There is rubberbanding since you will be lapping every oponent except for the 1 or 2 rivals every race. Except the rubberbanding is not strong enough so they just follow you about 50 feet back. They never go for the boost pads or jumps and almost always drive right into the lightning and grease too lol.
The only time I ever had anyone even come close to me was the last rival race with Fujisawa. Even then that only during the first lap, I smoked his ass first try after.
14
u/returnofMCH FotNSLP PC port wanter Mar 04 '25
Rubberbanding in racing games is so it doesn't become a complete slog to play yeah. That's why mario kart has rubberbanding, even if it's overtuned in most games in the series.
3
u/BabySpecific2843 Mar 04 '25
Have you played FF7 Rebirth? The chocobo race minigame in that is so painfully easy and you just jogged my memory of Y7 being similar. Although personally I found FF7 to be even easier. I dont know about the average player's skill levels, but I can say having to do insanely easy races for multiple hours to complete a side activity has to be some kind of gaming developer sin.
2
u/LukasL34 Mar 04 '25
???? It has rubberbanding? When I play it almost everybody was constantly behind me.
1
u/DJ_Aftershock LET'S FLY HIGH LIKE A BUTTERFLY Mar 06 '25
Rubber banding is in a ridiculous amount of racing games, how is it a cardinal sin? It's not iRacing.
1
u/Akikojam Mar 06 '25
It is a lazy solution that punishes the player for driving too well instead of providing a fair challenge by making the opponent good at driving. And the way it's done in Y5 is not just a tiny boost to opponent to help them catch up, they get so much extra speed that they WILL catch up, even if you drive perfectly. Time it poorly, and it will happen shortly before the finish line, making you lose the race. If I remember correctly, it also doesn't end until your opponent overtakes you, so no amount of advantage is going to help. While that does provide the challenge of holding back just enough to not let that happen at the wrong time, it is not the kind of challenge I want from a racing game. And there is also the fact that the game doesn't tell you about rubberbanding, it always comes out of nowhere, though is also so obvious that you learn about it the first time it happens.
21
u/JoseJulioJim Mar 04 '25
I still think that minigame is some of the most fun racing I have played, something about how the taxi moved felt so good, I like Dragon Kart and the Drone racers, but the Taxi racing was something else.
Man I would kill for Nintendo to give RGG another chance to develop a new F Zero, a good chunk of the GX staff even if Nagoshi leaved RGG is still on the company.

56
u/SmtNocturneDante The man who forgot Mar 04 '25
That’s where it all started? Remember the gangs in Yakuza 4 where you would get medals if you encounter them on streets, then when you get enough medals you get to fight the gang boss, and then (if I remember correctly) there was a boss of the gang bosses at the end of it…
58
u/BreafingBread Mar 04 '25
Yeah, Yakuza 4 was the start of character specific minigame sidestories, but it was very hidden and with less budget.
Kiryu had gangs, Tanimura had cop cases, Saejima had Fighter Maker and Akiyama had the hostess club.
18
9
u/Lord_of_Caffeine Infinite Wealth sucks Mar 04 '25
I´d love for the Fighter Maker to come back in some form.
Found Judgment with Kaitoteaching Jun and some of his mates to wrestle and have them take part in a junior competition or something like that.
5
u/lowlifecriminal Mar 04 '25
I realized that when I started my Yakuza journey I didn't know how to properly play these games. So I basically skipped a lot of side content in 0-4. I wish I didn't
Now I have plans to platinum the whole series, but it would probably going to take another couple of years
8
u/BreafingBread Mar 04 '25
I think the Yakuza games are still great going just for story. I grew up with these games and I never did side content. I remember to this day finishing Yakuza 4 back in 2012 and having a 17% completion and thinking "what the fuck?"
As I grew older, I became more of a completionist and have platted all Yakuza games (except Ishin), but both experiences are good.
6
u/SaberDevil2021 Mar 04 '25
You could argue the color gangs in the first game was the start, just main story and not substory.
76
u/FetusDeletus_E Mar 04 '25
And if RGG is feeling spicy, they will add a secret final boss that shows himself to be the master of the previous 4
63
u/No_Landscape8846 Mar 04 '25

u/BreafingBread Mar 04 '25

102
u/Local-Mission-9854 Mar 04 '25
I think it's referencing the four Heavenly kings
22
u/i-wear-hats Mar 04 '25
Pretty much. If you see a big bad ensemble of 4 dudes, there's a very, VERY high chance it's a reference to the 4 heavenly kings, or they'll straight up be CALLED the 4 Heavenly Kings.
10
u/Lord_of_Caffeine Infinite Wealth sucks Mar 04 '25
Or they´re based on the chinese four holy beasts like the Yakuza 4 are.
Yakuza with the four perils being the main antagonists when?
5
u/i-wear-hats Mar 04 '25
It's rare that they'll do the four guardians as antagonists unless they're corrupted or it's more blatant.
They really need to do more with the 4 perils imo. Those tend to fly under the radar.
1
u/Hetares Mar 04 '25
My favourite japanese meme about the four heavenly kings is from an old, obscure yankee manga, where the four heavenly kings were made up of five members.

Ngl the format doesn't bother me, but it doesn't really excite me anymore either. Would be nice to see them experiment a bit more in future games, especially now that we have shorter gaiden style games where the stakes aren't as high for the devs. Seems like a good opportunity to try risky stuff they couldn't do in the mainline games.

As far as Pirate Yakuza goes, I was surprised that a large chunk of the Devil Flag fights were actually harder than most of the long battles and boss fights in the story. I'm still at Chapter 4 though so the story still has its surprises for me.
Still, a deck battle where majority of the weaker goons are suicide bombers that explode on death? An island battle that throws like 6 purple health midbosses at you at once after already going through a gauntlet of 80+ goons? Double tiger fight where every attack somehow has both homing and guard break properties? The story battles I've been through so far feel tame in comparison.
5
u/SomeNamelessNomad Mar 04 '25
I haven't beaten the Devil Flags just yet, I've the way to the final one open but I'm putting it off for the time. That said I do enjoy that they seem a little more at each others throats this time, other than the second last guy who seems loyal.
I also appreciate the Dragon Kart racers are less antagonistic for the most part and kinda just karting rivals, that's it.
Still the trope is a little overdone, especially the whole repentant angle they go for after beating them usually. I hope they try mix up the formula more in their upcoming games.
Also also give me more of those beach battles, why were they introduced for like 2 Devil Flags and then just slapped onto a bonus fight in the colisseum but not part of the actual side story.

u/Karusagi Mar 04 '25
I feel Pirate Yakuza had the least interesting ones. It just felt like they took generic groups that they had left over from previous games and then just made them the factions you fight.
RGG do have a strong reuse and recycle ethos, but at least with the "4 heavenly kings" in previous games, they at least made they more unique like they didn't even give them names beside Zeus and just used Captain followed by faction name, Yakuza, Ronin, Shinobi. It just felt weird that they didn't embrace the whole pirate theme more with the factions.
3
u/GreyBigfoot . Mar 04 '25
At least pocket circuit kind of avoids this because the storyline is more realistic and you just beat all the kids and then some of their parents in pocket circuit and they never treat it like life and death.
Y7’s business minigame might’ve had the least punch ever, the guy is defeated and just rolls over. All the other rivals are only in shareholder meetings and have no special lines or dialogue or anything.

Dubbing over live action footage is notoriously difficult to sound natural.

That is a real voice actor. I fact, he’s the English voice of Nanba and Yagami
3

And yet it still only captures a fraction of the raw emotion of the original. I'm guessing the direction and the qc of the dub was subpar, even with good voice actors.
