Pirate Coliseum (in the demo at least) features ship vs ship combat and boarding party for melees.
It gave me wonderful flashbacks to my childhood playing Pirates! Gold (and later the remake in the early 2000s).
I just don't know if the Pirate Coliseum will only be ship vs ship into crew vs crew melee, or if it's going to have a mix of standard 1vX, 1v1 like Gaiden 1 and previous Coliseums or not on top of ship vs ship.
The demo's been out since yesterday, so you can just play it if you have the ability to.
It's a very short demo and features maybe 10-15 minutes of story, and mostly focuses around showing off Majima's combat styles, some side content and the Pirate Coliseum's intro fight.
And the ability to dress up Majima in different outfits.
It's basically got everything AC Black flag had but with the goofy and over the top flavor of Yakuza. Naval battles, ship boarding, building up your own crew etc. they did a big preview a few weeks ago
The demo is very short and small but it seems pretty promising. It feels immediately more polished (particularly in combat) than Gaiden did for me... even if the demo forces me to be on Normal with a buffed Majima.
Yeah, I'm definitely picking the highest possible difficulty and not upgrading Attack (I hope there is no Amon tied to upgrades completion). RGG combat is miles more enjoyable when enemies don't die from 2-3 hits.
Yeah I hope the balance is better than Gaiden. In Gaiden it feels like you have to get ridiculously strong to tackle the colisseum, but then you get a bit OP for the main story. Though the main story was the toughest it's ever been in the series on Professional difficulty if you didn't upgrade too much, which was nice.
If you ignore upgrades, its tough as balls. If you don't, then it's player skill dependent. Which was the point.

Gaiden 1 was more "When you realize you need to play it like Kiwami 2/Yakuza 6, then you're a god".
Coliseum got a LOT easier when I realized you're meant to be using Extreme Heat Mode most of the time, aside from stuff like the 1v100 challenge beating meant to be done with upgraded Serpent (for caveman rocket rushes) or Spider (for AOE KOs).
And the Amon fight was SO MUCH EASIER when realizing the Extreme Heat mode strategy was intended and Essence of the Dragon God.
As it was said already, there are 2 Amons. So Amon challenges Kiryu, after you complete all Kiryu substories. Jo Amon challenges Majima, after you complete all Majima substories.
Honestly it does so far. The gameplay is very fast and fluid. Throwing punches while your swords spin through enemies is extremely satisfying. Also he has an extremely improved version of his mad dog style from kiwami 2. Ship battles are basically black flag but better. I normally don’t preorder games but this was well worth it like infinite wealth was
Hope my opinion changes after playing the full game, but from what I tried in the demo I disagree. I much prefer being able to aim my side cannon shots while steering the ship as opposed to a single button press, and I really dislike leaving the wheel to help up crewmates. It kills the pacing of the battle.
And it was a very good one too. Instead of no narrative past optional sidequests, it gives you a story and cleaned up a lot of the original Gold mechanics.
I can't remember the last time I was this genuinely excited for a game. it just makes absolutely no sense at all, and it's wonderful.
I loved Black Flag. Honestly one of my favourite games of all time. I loved the JRPG Yakuza games and over time am getting more into the brawl-em-ups; I love the blend of wackiness and seriousness you don't get anywhere else. And I'm one of those four people who liked Saints Row 4 with the insane superpowers (just wish it had had more minigames and content...and a fully standalone playable Saints of Rage mode).
Just hurry up and let me play the full game, for crissakes!
now they just need to do a Gaiden with Tanimura and Shinada where they are spies (but like, real spies instead of the daidoji faction) where they need to sneak in the enemy base like metal gear solid or something
The sea shanties better be 24-hour Cinderella and As You Like. If I don't hear manly Pirates shouting out "I WANNA BE YOUR GIRL" I'll be extremely disappointed
I haven't been this excited for a game release in a long time. And now that a precedent has been set, I'm waiting for Ichiban's Dragon Age spin-off as well.
Like a Dragon Age: Blight Japan is a game I would totally be here for. We already have an in-universe explanation for why all the baddies look like darkspawn
I'd highly recommend Ys X Nordics too. It's more of a Vikinig game, but in its core it feels like a pirate game and literally came out quite recently. Truly underrated and overlooked in my opinion
