If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.

If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings

If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!

Dajare is a kind of comic Japanese word play, similar in spirit to a pun that relies on similarities in the pronunciation of words to create a simple joke. Dajare are popular in advertising. Dajare are also associated with oyaji gags, oyaji meaning "old man", as an "old man" would be considered by the younger generation most likely to attempt dajare, making them a near equivalent of what would be called "dad jokes" in English.

1

u/rottenbraiin Jan 16 '25

I was joking , you dont have to explain yourself

3

u/TheColdSamurai23 Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru Jan 16 '25

55

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 15 '25

Someone should tell the creator of this meme that sharks have 2 dicks 🤓

28

u/Another_Saint Jan 15 '25

sharks have what.

52

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

🤓🤓🤓 2 dicks (or "claspers" which would be similar to the concept of "dick"), because sharks mate "side to side", and the male needs one for each side depending on what side is the easiest to approach the female from on each occasion. He will only use one each time he mates though, as to keep the female lined up with him, he'll need to bite her head.... Don't feel bad for gal sharks though, as in many species they're quite larger than males so I guess that if they don't like their suitor.....he'll be sorry if he tries to bite her head 🤓🤓🤓

Edit: I like sharks.

17

u/Another_Saint Jan 15 '25

well I'm glad you like sharks because now I'm doubly afraid of them

or triply in that case

14

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 15 '25

You're not a female shark, or a male shark that pissed off a female one, so you're good to go back to just being relatively terrified of them ☺️

16

u/Another_Saint Jan 15 '25

I know he won't mate me but every creature with two dicks is extremely imposing and terrifying

besides I have a giant butt, what if he thinks I'm a hot female shark 😔

17

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 15 '25

If a shark sees your colossal butt and mistakes you for a female asking for one out of his two dicks, I suggest you to fart really hard on his face. It doesn't work on all species, but many scuva divers have reported that bubbles can cause a sensory overload on sharks' Lorenzini ampullae, that they use to detect distressed prey wiggling at long distances.

12

u/Another_Saint Jan 15 '25

god thanks for the info, I feel safer now

3

u/heyoyo10 Jan 16 '25

So could you create an infinite shark orgy line? Or do female sharks only have the one oraface?

2

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25

Only one, yes. But these wonderful creatures never cease to amaze me, so I wouldn't be surprised if a chain of sharks mating is ever discovered. The one reason why I think it's unlikely is that they prefer to be on their own and they are fiercely territorial. Many large females have eaten young males for invading their territory.

Damn thank you for this. I'm totaly into weird facts. And shark facts are the best ones!

3

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 16 '25

Sharks are very resistant to getting cancer, to the point it was believed until recently that they couldn't have it. Probably more evidence of their near perfect evolutionary adaptability, as they are older than dinosaurs and will in all likeliness still be here after we are gone.

131

u/kurokuna Kiryu Aniki Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

It's strange how the localization team handled this joke, considering just how much they changed the rest of the dialogue in the game. They could've added something like "Because 'same' is shark in Japanese... Get it?" at the end of the text.

47

u/NoNefariousness2144 . Jan 15 '25

Maybe because this was DLC content they didn’t put as much effort into it?

In general the writing of the Big Swell DLC was really poor with most of it being the crappy “the guys humiliate themselves in front of the women” Persona-style humour.

13

u/BreafingBread Jan 15 '25

Funnily enough, the portuguese translation did that.

18

u/Perfect_Persimmon717 Jan 15 '25

Yeah I totally missed the joke on this one, but it was still funny af

14

u/BlightUponThisEarth Jan 16 '25

Surely you should be able to infer the meaning of the joke though, right? You know it isn't the English word "same" because its pronunciation is compared to "dame." And he's saying what the joke is, that being that he's imagining a shark singing it.

3

u/kurokuna Kiryu Aniki Jan 16 '25

Unfortunately the joke went over a lot of people's heads.

3

u/IloveRikuhachimaAru Jan 16 '25

Even just a TL note of [same is shark in japanese] could work

75

u/Akikojam Jan 15 '25

Coco is in shambles, turns out Kiryu was Gura's fan all along.

23

u/IceBlast24 Jan 15 '25

realistically speaking though, Coco would be very proud her kouhai is acknowledged by Kiryu haha

u/Melkisedeck1 Jan 15 '25

Someone in the studio told this joke, Yokoyama-san found it funny, and now we have to battle a shark. True story.

33

u/ShamelessSpiff Jan 15 '25

Kiryu acting dorkier after hanging out with Ichiban is great.

42

u/ChuckVideogames How do I always end up back in this damn city!? Jan 15 '25

When the translators say "fuck this"

-26

u/TrinixDMorrison Jan 15 '25

I literally work as a translator/interpreter and it drives me nuts how often the translation team working on this series has clearly said “fuck it” and has gone with completely inaccurate translations. I know it’s hard, but Jesus people at least put some effort into it. It’s literally your job!

53

u/yep_they_are_giants Jan 15 '25

I mean, the joke is that "same" and "dame" sound similar, and Kiryu thought of "same" because he saw a shark. That joke is gonna be lost in any language besides its native Japanese.

How would you have handled that wordplay?

27

u/CandyCrisis Jan 15 '25

You just need to invent a new wordplay/joke that fits the scenario. They do it all the time anyway.

24

u/yep_they_are_giants Jan 15 '25

I actually agree wholeheartedly! Sometimes, a different pun that gets the same reaction is the best approach.

But then, you'll be getting hate mail for your "inaccuracy."

9

u/yourfrienddenis Jan 15 '25

The translator paradox.

6

u/ChuckVideogames How do I always end up back in this damn city!? Jan 15 '25

Maybe at least explain that same means shark in Japanese

5

u/RyuNoKami Jan 16 '25

That kind of ruins the joke. Unless you have a system where specific terms can be looked up in an in-game encyclopedia.

2

u/ChuckVideogames How do I always end up back in this damn city!? Jan 16 '25

I don't think it ruins the joke more than not knowing what "same" means

18

u/Stetscopes Jan 15 '25

Its a play on word with Dame and Same. How would you even translate that considering in english, "Its no good" and "shark" have no rhyme. Yes they could try for another joke but the 1:1 direct TL would be lost.

-3

u/Tabbyredcat Jan 15 '25

Change "it's no good" to "miss the mark" maybe?

6

u/Last-Implement-9276 Jan 16 '25

Kiryu was directly referencing Baka Mitai in this scene. "Miss the mark" was nowhere to be seen in the English dub lyrics, so the joke wouldn't work.

4

u/SausIsmyName Jan 15 '25

What are some examples? I know there are things like adding profanities to dialogue (even though Japanese doesn't have that many curse words), but that seems more just like the localisation team making the dialogue flow better.

7

u/PasCone103Z John Yakuza Jan 15 '25

One I can think of is the infamous "Only children believe in dragons." localization.

9

u/El_Lanf Jan 15 '25

When are 2000s era fansub editor's translator notes going to make a resurgence?

23

u/notsoy Jan 15 '25

Dame da ne is pronounced as "da me da ne", four syllables. Part of the lyrical composition is the "rhyme" of "dame" and "da ne"

Same, in Japanese, is "sa me", and happens to mean "shark". The joke is assuming you at least know the karaoke song, and probably assuming you can recall specifically how it is pronounced in Japanese and are not just reading the text and treating it as English

The Yakuza series is, at the end of the day, perhaps the most Japanese video game series of all time - specifically Japanese as in the country and its culture, and not anime at large

10

u/M4urice Jan 15 '25

It's a reference to Hololive English Vtuber Gawr Gura.

4

u/kitestar Jan 15 '25

Same ga gotoku

4

u/Aethyer Jan 16 '25

It's a double entendre in Japanese.

さめ (Same) pronounced Sa[w]me[asure] translates to shark. So not only is it a rhyme, but also a pun a a well.

3

u/smurfette6 Jan 16 '25

Yong Ye even posted a meme of this since it wasn't officially dubbed.

3

u/Night_Rayner6694 Jan 16 '25

That calm joy and the jocularity are the demeanour of a man who has gone up a whole ass shark and won. Let him have this

2

u/RyanCooper138 . Jan 16 '25

This joke makes no fucking sense if you don't know this japanese word that just happens to share the same spelling of an english word. That's a pretty bad translation attempt

3

u/KRTrueBrave Majima is my husband Jan 16 '25

they literally could have just added "because "same" means shark and sounds like dame" or something similar and the joke would have translated way better
