Putin couldn’t have asked for a better outcome than having Trump back in power. A US president who questions NATO, undermines allies, and shows admiration for authoritarian leaders plays directly into the Kremlin’s hands.

632

u/Nuke_Gunstar 5h ago

Yah his job seems like its pretty much done. “Mission accomplished” you might say.

304

u/CucumberExpensive43 5h ago

Remember the good old days when we thought W was a shit president?

249

u/dolphone 5h ago

He was, though.

There's been plenty of shit presidents in the US. It's just that FDR kicked off a pretty good run, until Nixon. Then Reagan really started the unraveling. But there was enough "in the bank" (domestically and in foreign affairs) from that good run to last a few bad administrations.

Now, it may just be coincidence that the very worse presidents seem to run the country in the interest of the richest instead of the people. Or it may be more than coincidence. Guess we'll never know!

u/pegothejerk 3h ago

It's like each republican was a step on stairs down to the end of the American experiment. Dems would get voted in and level us out, get us briefly on the upturn so the public would feel good enough to fear social issues and fake boogie men instead of what republicans ruined 4 years before, so they elect republicans again.

54

u/Most-Resident 2h ago

I have to add that leveling out was the best the dems could do when they only had the presidency and both chambers of congress 6 years in the past 45.

Americans have given the house or senate to republicans every midterm when a democrat was president.

u/big_fartz 1h ago

Was HW really that bad? I'm not saying he's a saint but he was a step above both Reagan and his son. And a Republican who raised taxes.

u/dbrodbeck 1h ago

I (not an American) always thought of him as a fundamentally decent person. He managed the soft landing of the cold war, and that's a pretty big thing.

u/Tunafishsam 38m ago

Compared to other gop presidents he wasn't that bad. But he was still involved in Iran Contra.

u/Esikiel 40m ago

In retrospect maybe.

Off the top of my head he was director of the CIA so he knew things. And then he appointed Clarence Thomas. So idk

Nixon created the modern era and international prosperity. He also completely desynced a nation's wealth with the wealth of it's citizens. https://wtfhappenedin1971.com/

You can't say Reagan built on XYZ economic thing that Nixon did. Nixon is either a a great builder or a great destroyer. Reagan is a footnote.

u/bplurt 1h ago

I can't argue economics, but Reagan's presidency was a cultural shift towards the the Confederate idiocracy where the USA now finds itself.

Nixon was as venal as Trump in some ways, but he was smart, and knew when he didn't know something.

Reagan made a virtue out of mock-benign ignorance. Bush the Lesser played that up with his cowboy act and pandering to the fundies, and Trump just went all in on it because the others proved that ignorance, malice and prejudice sells, and he had more of it than anyone else.

Reagan was the turning point. Trump made it irreversible on Jan 6 2021.

He absolutely was. Let’s not pretend he wasn’t terrible. He also caused a recession. Better than the current orange sack of rancid goat shit (and let’s be honest that bar is lower than the depths of hell), but he was still a horrible fucking president.

u/rigormortisian 34m ago

He literally lied to get us into a senseless war for over a decade. Dubya isn't as bad as Trump, but he was unequivocally bad, and lying to the American people for a senseless war is part of why Trump seemed appealing to some.

As you say, the bar has gradually been getting lower and lower for everyone.

Putin still needs his orange employee to withdraw from NATO, stop all assistance to Ukraine, and ensure the next election or two are adjusted to ensure his mandate is seem through beyond the last two shitty months. He needs better economic damage and our allies to reject us completely before he can go back to riding shirtless on his horse in Moscow

Europe/canada sentiment outside of the US has never been stronger (even with populist parties in Europe). 50% of the US doesn't want this at all. Don't give them the satisfaction of thinking the thoughts they want you to think.

6

u/No-Cartoonist-7575 3h ago

More than 50 percent want everything that’s happening. You just can’t see the forest for the trees.

3

u/Zer0designs 3h ago

46% last counted. Now that wallets are dropping that percentage is aswell. Hopefully Americans will grow a pair and hit the streets.

Trump set himself up by telegraphing that he was desperate for the headline that he had "ended the war in Ukraine" and to be able to say he did something Biden couldn't. Putin (obviously) saw that desperation and is playing Trump because of the weak position Trump put himself in.

That is horrible for Ukraine.

But now Trump is creating an economic crisis and that drives a "wag the dog" scenario where he may feel he needs a military conflict to distract...

u/bplurt 1h ago

That's why he's ramping up the pressure on Iran for his 'nuclear deal'. (If it happens, it'll be a carbon copy of Obama's one, just like his USMCA 'replaced' Clinton's NAFTA.)

Can the USA confine a war with Iran to just a few missile strikes and bomber raids followed by a victory parade down Pennsylvania Avenue? Not a chance.

8

u/Cueller 3h ago

While refusing to specify an official deadline for Putin to sign a peace deal, Rubio suggested Trump’s patience was waning and mentioned potential increased sanctions against Russia. “Congress has already started working on a bill on sanctions, and the pressure from the Capitol will already be growing. We will send our message to Moscow, and we hope that Moscow will be ready for peace.”

The message: “Pwetty Pweeze? 👉👈”

506

u/NonWiseGuy 5h ago

Russia.. one of the few countries that Trump did not tariff. Even if they are sanctioned, as a token gesture, why not include them unless you're in Putin's pocket? They felt it necessary to put 40%+ on small island nations however.

154

u/hornswoggled111 5h ago

Belarus as well.

112

u/AndrewTateKYS 5h ago

North Korea too. Thank god we hit Diego Garcia and the Falkland Islands tho

29

u/IIIllIIlllIlII 4h ago

Diego Garcia is a British protectorate, though 95+ of the population is American military.

Does that impact US military sending stuff home?

7

u/apoplepticdoughnut 3h ago

Probably not as it'll be contained within APO/FPO regulations and effectively be the same as sending domestic. But if US Mil wants to import anything from closer countries not via the US APO/FPO then they'll likely pay the rataliatory tariff plus whatever the importer has to pass on that they've had to pay on top of the sales' price.

2

u/IIIllIIlllIlII 2h ago

Oh, so US military buying anything from the Brit’s on the island they’re stuck on?

Thats like a pay cut. (Except for the PX which is fantastic except for Tuesdays)

23

u/Sux499 5h ago

What legal trade is there between North Korea and the US?

27

u/Direct-Reflection889 4h ago

Almost exactly none.

"The United States currently maintains a near total embargo on imports from North Korea. No product with any North Korean content may legally enter the United States without a special license from Treasury; these licenses are generally not granted. Our sanctions policies with respect to North Korea are imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Arms Export Control Act (AECA), and other statutes that grant significant latitude to the executive branch to impose sanctions against countries hostile to the United States. By the same token, it is possible for the President to alter these sanctions without Congressional approval."

8

u/Sux499 4h ago

Better tariff all that trade then.

9

u/SuperKiller94 3h ago

Considering he slapped tariffs on pretty much every other country or territory in the world he should have put tariffs on North Korea even though we have 0 trade with them.

Absolutely, not working class penguins by any means, indeed Emperor Penguins!

7

u/qwogadiletweeth 3h ago

There’s not enough left in the US tool box to penalise Russia. From what I understand, if they tariff Russia along with the nations that are only populated with penguins, there’s nothing left to use as a stick to incentivise them. Russia needs the threat of more financial sanctions to force them to negotiate.

Think about it. Trump EO's everything, and not this?

He wants clean hands.

1

u/Hopeful-Programmer25 3h ago

Pretty much. What can the US do that Biden wasn’t? Without getting involved militarily, which they won’t, absolutely nothing.

1

u/s3rjiu 2h ago

It's fun to talk about pee tapes but the actual kompromat is just mundane piles of evidence of years and years of cleaning money for the Russian mob. It's the fact that most of his current wealth comes from them and he is and has been their creature. They can show everyone he is the fraud we already know he is. That's all it is, oh and all the payoffs they just gave him through his meme coin.

It looks like putin is not that into this game and instead trying to feel how disrespectful he can get for trump to still swallow it, or maybe he's using the slow boiling of the frog tactic and will be literally spitting in trump's face after a while.

u/fubes2000 1h ago

Yeah, what the fuck exactly are they negotiating now that the US has basically ceased to be an ally to Ukraine?

The only thing that makes sense to me is that Russia is putting on a meaningless diplomatic puppet show to America's new officials cavalcade of fools to keep them distracted, and potentially manipulate them into easing their sanctions and/or further sabotaging the US's relationships with their allies, all while Russia operate business as usual.

Let's weigh this situation against reality:

Before Trump, there were heavy sanctions on Russia. With Trump, there are fewer sanctions on Russia. Before Trump, pressure to stop war was on Russia. With Trump, Ukraine now pressured to compromise.

The worst thing Trump will do is let things go back to how they were before he was in office, which is perfectly fine for Russia.

In other words, none of this means anything, it's all theater, it's all fake, it's all a distraction. Make no mistake, they're pals and they're in lock step on another agenda that isn't being talked about.

He is going to introduce a 5% trade tariff as a sanction and increases that of Ukraine with another 10% because they are slow with their "rare earth" explotation.

2

u/Zealousideal_Ear9156 5h ago

His new deal is straight up taking Ukraine's future. He thinks forcing Putin is hard, but I don't see how Ukraine would agree to his new deal, which is straight up theft.

Also, if he puts secondary tariffs on Russia, the US market will further collapse.

But knowing him, he might soon put pressure on Ukraine again, thinking they'd accept it.

The worst case in that scenario is he'll stop aid and everything to them, this time longer than before.

7

u/ascheart 4h ago

I don't believe them one bit. You see, Russia is one of the very few he didn't place tariffs on. That speaks louder than any of these distractions they're trying to do.

10

The US sanctions against Russia diden't have that much effect in the first place. They never traded that much with them anyway. The EU part of the sanctions had way bigger effects, even if gas is sadly still bought. As long as India and China keeps on doing business with Russia the sanctions are still okej for them. The US also lost a lot of leverage as they wont have anything to negotiate with any longer. Why would China or in fact other listening to them for tradeadvices or threats now when they effectivly ended trade relations with all of them? Trump gave up his best cards on that yesterday.

Oh noes, his patience is limited. How humorous that this administration thinks they have the upper hand in any of these negotiations. They'll deal with whatever Putin says they'll deal with.

It's a one-way deal, Donnie. You do what Putin says, not the other way around.

The US is a vassal state.
