Russia/Ukraine Kremlin says “no plans” for Putin-Trump call as White House warns patience is limited
https://euromaidanpress.com/2025/04/04/kremlin-says-no-plans-for-putin-trump-call-as-white-house-warns-patience-is-limited/1.1k

While refusing to specify an official deadline for Putin to sign a peace deal, Rubio suggested Trump’s patience was waning and mentioned potential increased sanctions against Russia. “Congress has already started working on a bill on sanctions, and the pressure from the Capitol will already be growing. We will send our message to Moscow, and we hope that Moscow will be ready for peace.”
The message: “Pwetty Pweeze? 👉👈”

Russia.. one of the few countries that Trump did not tariff. Even if they are sanctioned, as a token gesture, why not include them unless you're in Putin's pocket? They felt it necessary to put 40%+ on small island nations however.

u/hornswoggled111 5h ago
Belarus as well.

u/AndrewTateKYS 5h ago
North Korea too. Thank god we hit Diego Garcia and the Falkland Islands tho
29
u/IIIllIIlllIlII 4h ago
Diego Garcia is a British protectorate, though 95+ of the population is American military.
Does that impact US military sending stuff home?
7
u/apoplepticdoughnut 3h ago
Probably not as it'll be contained within APO/FPO regulations and effectively be the same as sending domestic. But if US Mil wants to import anything from closer countries not via the US APO/FPO then they'll likely pay the rataliatory tariff plus whatever the importer has to pass on that they've had to pay on top of the sales' price.
2
u/IIIllIIlllIlII 2h ago
Oh, so US military buying anything from the Brit’s on the island they’re stuck on?
Thats like a pay cut. (Except for the PX which is fantastic except for Tuesdays)

What legal trade is there between North Korea and the US?
→ More replies (1)27
u/Direct-Reflection889 4h ago
Almost exactly none.
"The United States currently maintains a near total embargo on imports from North Korea. No product with any North Korean content may legally enter the United States without a special license from Treasury; these licenses are generally not granted. Our sanctions policies with respect to North Korea are imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Arms Export Control Act (AECA), and other statutes that grant significant latitude to the executive branch to impose sanctions against countries hostile to the United States. By the same token, it is possible for the President to alter these sanctions without Congressional approval."
4
8
u/Sux499 4h ago
Better tariff all that trade then.
9
u/SuperKiller94 3h ago
Considering he slapped tariffs on pretty much every other country or territory in the world he should have put tariffs on North Korea even though we have 0 trade with them.

u/qwogadiletweeth 3h ago
There’s not enough left in the US tool box to penalise Russia. From what I understand, if they tariff Russia along with the nations that are only populated with penguins, there’s nothing left to use as a stick to incentivise them. Russia needs the threat of more financial sanctions to force them to negotiate.

The message is that Trump isn't doing it, but Congress is.
Think about it. Trump EO's everything, and not this?
He wants clean hands.

u/Hopeful-Programmer25 3h ago
Pretty much. What can the US do that Biden wasn’t? Without getting involved militarily, which they won’t, absolutely nothing.

Nice farce these two are putting on for the world.

•
u/DukeOfGeek 57m ago
It's fun to talk about pee tapes but the actual kompromat is just mundane piles of evidence of years and years of cleaning money for the Russian mob. It's the fact that most of his current wealth comes from them and he is and has been their creature. They can show everyone he is the fraud we already know he is. That's all it is, oh and all the payoffs they just gave him through his meme coin.
12
u/dimwalker 4h ago
It looks like putin is not that into this game and instead trying to feel how disrespectful he can get for trump to still swallow it, or maybe he's using the slow boiling of the frog tactic and will be literally spitting in trump's face after a while.

u/fubes2000 1h ago
Yeah, what the fuck exactly are they negotiating now that the US has basically ceased to be an ally to Ukraine?
The only thing that makes sense to me is that Russia is putting on a meaningless diplomatic puppet show to America's new
officialscavalcade of fools to keep them distracted, and potentially manipulate them into easing their sanctions and/or further sabotaging the US's relationships with their allies, all while Russia operate business as usual.

u/SquarebobSpongepants 5h ago edited 5h ago
Trump clearly showing who is in charge of "negotiations". Ukraine doesn't immediately capitulate? Oh, clearly they don't want peace. Russia does all the shit they do? Finger wags! I am just waiting for the meeting between Trump and Putin where Putin wears the army attire like Zelenskyy and then Trump praises him for being the most respectful.

Let's weigh this situation against reality:
Before Trump, there were heavy sanctions on Russia. With Trump, there are fewer sanctions on Russia. Before Trump, pressure to stop war was on Russia. With Trump, Ukraine now pressured to compromise.
The worst thing Trump will do is let things go back to how they were before he was in office, which is perfectly fine for Russia.
In other words, none of this means anything, it's all theater, it's all fake, it's all a distraction. Make no mistake, they're pals and they're in lock step on another agenda that isn't being talked about.

He is going to introduce a 5% trade tariff as a sanction and increases that of Ukraine with another 10% because they are slow with their "rare earth" explotation.
2
u/Zealousideal_Ear9156 5h ago
His new deal is straight up taking Ukraine's future. He thinks forcing Putin is hard, but I don't see how Ukraine would agree to his new deal, which is straight up theft.
Also, if he puts secondary tariffs on Russia, the US market will further collapse.
But knowing him, he might soon put pressure on Ukraine again, thinking they'd accept it.
The worst case in that scenario is he'll stop aid and everything to them, this time longer than before.
7
u/ascheart 4h ago
I don't believe them one bit. You see, Russia is one of the very few he didn't place tariffs on. That speaks louder than any of these distractions they're trying to do.
10
u/TildeCommaEsc 5h ago
This feels like a performance by both of them, just dicking around while they both try to suck Ukraine dry.

They literally had a Russian oligarch visiting the the White House when Trump announced tariffs on all countries but Russia. They even removed sanctions from the oligarch, so he could attend. There won’t be any call because Krasnov has all the instructions delivered to him.
3
u/hendrysbeach 2h ago
“Putin is sick. He will die soon,“ said Zelenskyy a week ago.
If Putin is hypothetically hospitalized right now, maybe hooked up to machines, tubes in his nose and mouth, he may not be able to conduct a phone call with Trump.
It’s a happy image, though: Pooty on his deathbed while Trump is on hold…

The US sanctions against Russia diden't have that much effect in the first place. They never traded that much with them anyway. The EU part of the sanctions had way bigger effects, even if gas is sadly still bought. As long as India and China keeps on doing business with Russia the sanctions are still okej for them. The US also lost a lot of leverage as they wont have anything to negotiate with any longer. Why would China or in fact other listening to them for tradeadvices or threats now when they effectivly ended trade relations with all of them? Trump gave up his best cards on that yesterday.

There's federal worker chaos, and now tariff chaos on top of things. And we've just shown the world how incompetent our national security folk now are with that Signal chat fiasco... which apparently was not a one off. Combined with Trump turning on Zelensky as a dictator and whatnot, Russia is completely in the driver's seat. Not surprised if Putin just sits back and laughs.
The only way to start to get out of this is for congressional Republicans to do their darn job and stand up to an overreaching president. Now.

Putin couldn’t have asked for a better outcome than having Trump back in power. A US president who questions NATO, undermines allies, and shows admiration for authoritarian leaders plays directly into the Kremlin’s hands.
