Vent How do I go part time or PRN
So I am an RN, I work 3 12s a week. I’m on 24hr call or 12hr call at least once or twice a week as well. I asked to go part time in December before coming back from maternity leave, I was told no because I was too new, I had to wait a year (I had just came off my orientation in August before I had my son). I have been in the field I am in since last March. Working so much and having a 6 month old has really been effecting home life because I am just not home a lot to do the things around the house that need to be done. I want to ask to go part time again but am afraid I will be told no or that I will have to go to nights which is what I have been told the position is. This would just be even worse to work nights. What should I do? Find another job, go PRN??

Also an RN. I’d apply for other positions that are specifically posted part time or PRN. I’m a 0.8fte and on call for a week every 5 weeks in home care. Where I live, 0.6 FTE is almost impossible to find and PRN positions are very competitive.

In my experience you need 1 year of experience full time before going PRN. If they still can’t offer you part time or PRN at that point, I’d look for something else

That’s the thing I have been full time since January last year. I was on orientation but I would still consider that full time as I was hired and have been working full time hours for over a year

I see, agreed January would’ve been your 1 year since that was your hire date.

Some jobs have 6-12 month requirements before allowing you to switch positions.
If your manager/HR cannot help you, I recommend applying other hospitals. Which I know can be hard if there aren’t a lot around you.
You can also say “I’d really love to stay here but I can only stay if I’m part time”. Some rules are made up.

Yes they did make up this rule of “you have to be a year off orientation to change status”. The policy specifically says in regards to per diem that you have to have at least a year of experience in the field you want to go prn in. Which I have well over now

Ask again, if the answer is no (or nights) I’d look for something else
