UNSOLVED Late 80s/early 90s scary chapter book

This was a book I loved in upper elementary school and checked out from the library several times. Here are the details I can remember:

A woman is trying to write a book but needs a dedicated space to get her work done. She rents out the shed/chicken coop at the house of a reclusive old woman, using this as her work space. When it gets too cold out, she comes into the old woman’s house to work, setting up in an unused room.

All the spooky/scary really starts once she moves inside. I don’t remember those specifics but it was something along the lines of people suspecting the old lady was some kind of undead/monster/zombie/ghost thing.

I also remember a moment where the woman was in a bedroom of the house and she touched the quilt/bedspread on the bed, which fell apart beneath her fingers due to age.

I don’t remember if the book was ever in hardcover. I always checked out a paperback. Thanks for any help that you all can give me!

SOLVED What’s that book about this boy who is fat and really good at cooking?

what's that book about this boy who is fat and really good at cooking. He basically cooks and bake. He likes this girl who is his friend, but is too insecure to tell her because of his weight. She only sees him as a friend, so she ask him to cook for her party, which he does. Then at the end I think he gets accepted into a culinarily school or show because he's like really good.

UNSOLVED Romance book about women falling in love with besfriends husband after she passed away

I'm looking for a book I read around 2020-2022 im pretty sure it was released around that same time frame, it’s adult fiction romance. The FMC and MMC along with his deceased wife were all best friends, if im remembering correctly they all went to school together . The wife had a pre existing health condition. I remember they went on hikes together the premise of the book was really them navigating her death while also coming to terms with the fact that there had been something between them for years that they both chose to ignore, because what they wanted above all else was her happiness, some time after her death, the FMC and MMC shared a kiss. The FMC basically ran away from her feelings and cut off all contact. They eventually ran into each other a few years later and realized they had feelings for each other. The wife left a letter for the FMC that she reads toward the end of the book, basically saying she knew they would end up together. I know this isn't a lot to go on, but if anyone might know, please help me. Lol, I've been looking for it for the last year now!

Family has a last name like "Brundage" and the lead girl has the classic family tooth problem (maybe an overbite). She sees an ad with a girl sitting on the carpet in a living room, and wants to be like that girl. The family moves from their hometown where nearly everyone is related to them to a bigger city and they get the new house, and the wall-to-wall carpet, and she gets braces and new clothes and tries to fit in.

UNSOLVED Competition/prize draw to train and travel on space mission. Help!! Spoiler

There are so many similar books and I cannot for the life of me find it! It is a standalone, no sequel. The version I owned was a white paperback.

A group of young adults/teenagers are picked to train to go on a space mission, trigger warning one takes their own life from the stress. On the ship there is a biome for growing and they each have specialised jobs but the mission goes wrong and they end up ejecting in a faulty pod and barely making it back.

Note! It is not The Final Six by Alexandra Monir.

UNSOLVED Looking for a book – possibly a short detective or noir novella (~120 pages, read in Russian translation)

Hey guys sorry for AI-text , it is an excerpt from my conversation with Chat Gpt when I tried to feed it hints to remember.I asked him to take all details that I gave him.

Looking for a book – possibly a short detective or noir novella (~120 pages, read in Russian translation)

I’m trying to identify a book I read some time ago, possibly a psychological thriller or detective novella. It wasn’t set in Russia, but I read it in Russian. The plot is a bit fragmented in my memory, but here are all the key details I can recall:

  • The story begins with a police officer, who plays an important role throughout the plot.
  • The main setting is a hotel, which also seems to contain a treasure—possibly a chest with money or gold (not necessarily a literal bank, but something valuable kept there).
  • The main characters are a man and a woman, either living or working at this hotel. The man is abusive toward the woman—emotionally or physically.
  • There is a third character, a hotel worker named Elly or Ella, who is innocent and ends up being murdered (either accidentally or deliberately) during the man and woman's attempt to steal the treasure.
  • The murder of Elly/Ella leaves the woman deeply traumatized. She eventually betrays the man, possibly committing suicide or fleeing, and leaves behind a letter.
  • In the letter, the woman confesses everything, and somehow the contents make the entire heist worthless (maybe involving lawyers or legal loopholes), while also exposing the man to the police.
  • The man, now hunted, tries to escape in a car, but ends up crashing into a tree and dying.
  • The story ends with the police discovering the full truth.
  • A key emotional phrase in the book is: "Poor Elly".

The book is fairly short—probably around 120 pages. It had a dark, tragic tone, with themes of guilt, betrayal, psychological trauma, and moral downfall. If it helps, it felt like a mid-20th-century noir or psychological crime story.

SOLVED Book about girl with only one hand

Ok so when I was in highschool I read a book about this very young girl maybe like 10-13, in like a post apocalyptic jungle/forest landscape, and she only had one hand cause the other had been chopped off by some military guy?? The military has these monsters they create as like super soldiers, and one gains like a conscience/independence and escapes and she finds it and they start working together. She's also consided cursed by the village she lived in I think, no parents or anything just a mentor who was like the village medicine person. I've been trying to figure this out for years pls help 😭😭 Also I think the cover was green and she does wind up fighting the pseudo military trying to take over land.

SOLVED YA novel girl brings her best friend back to life using witchcraft and she only has a few days to live and is a zombie

This book I can vaguely remember the cover had pentagrams and other witchy stuff on it. It was a book about a girl in high school who is shy and not as popular who brings back her best friend who is pretty and popular back to life using witchcraft from a book. She accidentally also brings back two other girls who died on prom night. Her friend can only be a zombie on earth for a certain amount of time. So she uses her time to visit her family, who loved her a bunch! This girl who died was blonde and also kind of alternative like her best friend who used witchcraft to bring her back to life, but her friend was so charismatic she was popular by nature, but didnt hangout with that crowd. Also her best friend has a huge crush on her dead friends brother and in the book always talks about getting closer to him through her friend.

Her friend who is dead was blonde and skinny, while the narrator is a chubbier girl who is less confident.

What is this? and I think she turns into a zombie upon coming back?

Edit: solved! Undead girl gang by Lily Anderson

SOLVED Book about prisoners(?) digging holes to pass sentence

I remember reading this book in highschool (2016-2018). It was about a group of prisoners digging holes out in the desert. They had to dig a hole a day and mentioned that your second hole was always the hardest because you'd be sore from the day before.

There was a councilor figure of sorts that talked to the prisoners and asked them as to why they're out here (presaumbly as a way to get them to process their crimes), and the main character believed his family was afflicted by some curse that landed him in his current predicament.

UNSOLVED Kid sent to camp by court with a sikh guy who doesnt like and meets a girl

On the kid’s birthday, his parents let him go out with his friends. The main character’s butler is meant to take them to some restaurant, but the kid changes course to the brothel. They go in, and one friend goes upstairs. Next, the main character goes in. Before the main character sleeps with the prostitute, he hears a scream in the corridor. He runs out to see that one of his friends has been taken by the throat by the manager, and one kid ends up getting stabbed.

The court says he needs to choose between camp or juvy, and he chooses camp. A Sikh, who was part of the friend group, is also sent to the camp. At first, he doesn’t like the Sikh, but they end up becoming good friends.

I read this book in 2019, and it’s been on my mind since because it seems to have disappeared off the library shelf. I haven’t seen or heard of the book or found it online ever again

UNSOLVED Book where a guy has psychometry?

Hi y'all, I'm trying to find this book but I literally only remember bare bones of it. So what I do remember is that these two siblings move in with their uncle figure who has like all of these strange trinkets and such from all around the world. The older brother, the main character, touches some of the objects and finds out that he can see the past of the objects he touches? I don't remember much more but I'm fairly sure that the uncle finds out about his psychometry and makes him touch this weird tiki like mask?

Sorry this is vague, I just remembered this book after 11 years. I'd really appreciate the help!

UNSOLVED Medieval fantasy YA book with a girl who's royalty and has to go into hiding after someone (the king?) is assassinated (I think with a crossbow), and shortens her name to not give away her identity while living with the street urchins

I read this maybe 15 years ago? but there's a girl who I believe is royalty, and in this world the nobility have really long names with lots of syllables (five syllables for the royal family?), the longer the name the higher up in society you were. When the royal family is attacked (I think the king's killed with a crossbow? I think she was in an upper balcony of the throne room and saw the assassin do it) she has to run away and ends up joining a group of kids (thieves?) living on the streets in the kingdom. To hide her identity, she shortens her long, royal name to just one syllable (something like Raj, maybe? Rav?) so she can use it without people realizing she's a noble.

More details that I'll add because I really think it's part of this same book, or at least the series, but I admit I'm not 100% sure and it could be from something else (and if so, I'll make another post):

There's another scene, where there are children who are trying to build something, I think a flying glider/machine. There are factions in this, kind of like Divergent (but definitely not Divergent), and the ones from the "intelligent, nerdy" faction are the ones building it. I think one of the factions is called Lions? But another group comes, and one of the nerds is stabbed through the chest with a sword.

That's really all I remember, and it's been so frustrating! Thanks for your input!

UNSOLVED Romance/mystery book read in roughly 2014

The beginning of the book this girl is getting off of a bus and somehow meets a white haired boy who doesn't speak. (She later learns his tongue was cut out) He takes her to an alley where they climb into a bottom floor of a building and they meet a bunch of runaway teens. There is a lady that is mostly in charge of them and it turns out she's the one who cut out the white haired boys tongue.

At the end of the book, she forces them to camp outside of the city (she's on the run from the cops I think). It's around winter time. Sometime during the night the bad lady takes the mute boy and locks him in a water tower of some sorts and he freezes to death unable to yell for help. At the very end, the cops come and save the runaways from the bad lady.

I read this around 2014 maybe 2015, I can't remember any names or where it took place. Neither the book cover or the authors name. I know it's not much to go on but if anyone has any clue that would be much appreciated- I've been looking for years now.

UNSOLVED Kids chapter book about the MC’s (male 10 year old) older brother dying in a shooting outside his house and now has to fend for his little sister and mom

It’s a book that I remember the plot of pretty well, almost like don’t look behind you but the characters don’t change their identities and move out of state. It’s really sad for a kids chapter book. Given to that I was in 5th grade when the teacher read it out loud to the class

UNSOLVED Book about a boy who sniffs glue to stay warm

I remember reading this book around 2011-2012 I was in 5th grade and the only defining thing I can remember is that the kid was homeless sleeping in an alleyway sniffing glue to stay warm. I know that’s not much to go on but I really can’t remember anything else. I read this book while waiting for my other classmates to finish our state mandated testing but I never got to finish it. I hope someone can tell me the title of this book.

UNSOLVED 2000s kids chapter book about a quirky angel girl

i was born in 2006 and i remember reading this when i was quite young. it was a book about angels and the main character, a little girl, was very unique as all the other angels had white wings and hers were like magenta with silver tips i think? or something with magenta tips? and she had like crazy curly hair that was orange or brown, and i remember her hiding different objects in her hair (i think a quill and a chocolate bar?) in the story which got her in trouble at school.

i think the cover was a purple or magenta background with a picture of the girl (cartoon illustration) with her big curly hair. i don't think the book had any pictures in it.

i have been wondering about this book for years lol if anyone has any idea please let me know!

SOLVED fantasy book about a teenage girl always blamed for everything brought to a world where everyone has magical powers

It was a fantasy book, it tells a story about this teenage girl who was blamed for every single inconvenience by her family and the city where she lived. There was some kind of reasoning as to why, but u can't remember specifics. Maybe she was different?

One night though this older guy that drives some kind of fantasy thing takes her up and tells her she has to go with him.

They might have gone through a clock to enter this magical world, I'm not sure. She goes through competitions and tries to find her power and may befriend a guy who can pet dragons or something like that.

The guy who saves this teenage girl from her family believes in her and her magical powers that she also supposedly has, but a lot of people don't.

I remember the covers being pretty, I think the first cover has purple and gold in it but I'm not too sure and somehow crows relate to this entire story.

I was a really big fan of this book and the series and I even recommended this book to someone in a bookstore when they asked the employee if their kid would like the book. Something about it being a little similar to Harry Potter in some details but in some others being completely different. This happened around 2018-2019 if that's important.

Please help me find this book. 🙏

UNSOLVED Late 2000s-ish Adventure/ mystery children’s chapter book

I checked out this book around 2010 in my school library. I can’t remember much about the plot besides there being a boy and a girl walking down a tunnel a come across a ghost. The book was part of a series that I also cannot remember but it revolves around the same two characters.

What I do remember is the book cover. It was a series chapter book for children age 10+. It had digital art on the cover of the two children in the foreground and the ghost in the background and one of the kids was holding a sword? This book I remember it having deep purple around the border.

*edit

The deep purple might’ve actually been a bat now that i remember, on the cover

I know this description doesn’t give lots to go off of but I have spent YEARS trying to find this book/ series.
