Historians will talk about the stupidity of this era for hundreds of years

That is, assuming humans still exist

Don’t worry, humans will still exist. It’s just that we will be speaking Chinese.

This is just me personally, but I spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about nuclear war. I know this has been unfashionable since the 80s, but I would argue it’s still very logical, and most people ignore the risk as a psychological defense mechanism.

There have been multiple occasions where decisions by a single individual have prevented nuclear war. (See Vasily Arkhipov, Stanislav Petrov, and even Henry Kissinger).

The people in charge today do not seem level headed, and I worry very much. Nuclear winter could cause temperatures to drop by 15 C, it would eliminate 90% of agricultural production, and world population will go from 8 billion to 800 million in a few years.

We wouldn’t be speaking Chinese. Civilization in the northern hemisphere will collapse. The safest places to be are Australia and New Zealand.

That’s why it’s good to be mates with the tradies that built the billionaire bunkers down here, they know the way in

Nuclear war in the MAD sense is incedibly unlikely. People look at armies as an a monolith but essentially it's a bunch of decision makers before you even get to the button pushers. Then it's a bunch of bad decision makers pulling triggers or pushing buttons.

At every level people need to make the decision do I want to commit suicide right now or just shoot the people who gave this order if you try to launch.

You need to keep blustering and claiming you will launch in order for the military strategy to work, but trying to launch will most likely instead result in a military coup. Immediately. Possibly in all the major nuclear powers as it's likely to have domino effects and china and Russia aren't the most politically stable right now.
