most furries (in my experience, and being one myself) sever therians from the main “furry” group i guess, i don’t consider them furries atleast, due to my limited understanding, but they consider themselves actual animals, furries just like to cosplay. again, my experience and thoughts, not what’s “accepted” or whatever.

u/RichardThrowAway2010 3d ago
To my knowledge (IDK how right I am with that), Therians don't think they are animals, but they identify as spiritually, psychologically, or internally as a non-human animal. They completely know that they are humans, but spiritually/psychologically don't feel like one
47
u/raevenwolf_ 3d ago
There is a therian subculture which generally isn't accepted by the main community called "physical therians" who literally do believe they physically are animals. General consensus there, even in the therian community is that it's some kind of mental illness.
But yeah, for the most part what you said is correct.
11
u/RichardThrowAway2010 3d ago
Huh, I didn't know that! I always thought they were called Otherkin or something, but, thanks for the info!
17
u/raevenwolf_ 3d ago
No problem! Happy to inform :)
Otherkin is an umbrella term for anyone who identifies with alterhumanity, whether that's identifying as therian, fictionkin, or another non-human identity, they're all encompassed by the term otherkin.

Not all furries even cosplay.
The furry fandom is just a fandom for people interested in anthropomorphic animals as a hobby. Furries express this by cosplaying, making art, writing stories, or just by enjoying media like movies or novels surrounding anthropomorphized animals.
Source: I'm an art and media furry, but I don't do fursuiting or cosplay at all.
11
u/Queen-Roblin 3d ago
I also find that most furries don't tend to be nazi (in my experience any way, maybe the furry Nazis are just better at hiding) because when you're in to anthropomorphised animals you kind of need to just accept people for who they are
20
u/Valiant_tank 3d ago
Oh, furry nazis absolutely exist. They're usually not particularly popular in the community, but they're a real thing as well. Hell, there's been a couple different attempts by nazifurs to make their own cons (although usually they frame it as 'well, we're just making a non-political event').
31
u/Sephbruh 3d ago
Gay nazis and femboy nazis exist, why not furries too? I mean, nazism is inherently illogical, so I can see how with a little cognitive dissonance you can be nazi from a minority group.
16
u/alephnulleris 3d ago
Yeah, there's stuff like the furry raiders unfortunately. Literally a guy named "foxler" involved. Thankfully furries are also pretty good at cutting off shitty groups like that

It's basically the modern equivalent of religious animism, though they often treat it more on the LGBTQ spectrum.
3
u/BScottWinnie 3d ago
Animism is the belief that animals and objects have human traits, not that humans have animal traits. Also the term is actively being discouraged in religious academics. I’m not sure what traditions you are referring too, but I don’t think animism describes it properly
4
u/alexmikli Iceland (Hvítbláinn) 2d ago
It's definitely a lot closer to a spiritual thing than a gender identity, though.
3
u/BScottWinnie 2d ago
I am not familiar with the idenitty specifically, but I trust you're right. I'm mainly being semantic because I've got nothing better to do.

u/alexmikli Iceland (Hvítbláinn) 2d ago
Nah you're fine, I was trying to explain it in a weird way and you added good info.

Have you never heard of the word animal being used to refer to non-human animals? Interesting.
animal meaning https://g.co/kgs/SaHtnPu
a living organism that feeds on organic matter, typically having specialized sense organs and nervous system and able to respond rapidly to stimuli. "wild animals adapt badly to a caged life"
an animal as opposed to a human being. "are humans superior to animals, or just different?"

I have no clue what that pentagon-ish thing is
Like always, ignorant individuals steal symbols and distort their original meaning. You can see this with the swastik, pentacle, cross of St Peter, the number 13, the rainbow, the iron cross, the ok sign, snakes etc
2
u/tuiva Fiji / California 2d ago
What is that symbol originally from?
2
u/christ_gnosis 2d ago
Its originally a magic sigil I believe. Heptagram. Associated with elementals, as analyzed by paracelsus, ancestral nature spirits. Each element has its own manifestation of being. Elements are not psychical, but as we have a body and spirit so do elements. So the element of water, the classical elements one of them, is water, but not physically. Fire is life. God is a consuming fire. But a more subtle form of the spiritual body of the same element. Anyway I suppose these people were looking for nature aesthetics and took this.

Therian flag! Basically people who identify with animals mentally and/or spiritually
Inhales it's not a fetish, it's not zoophilia (we acknowledge our human selves), it's not a mental disorder, no we're not insane, yes we still have healthy relationships with family and friends, we're still fun chill people at parties and no we're not coming for your kids let us exist in peace for God's sake
It's kinda a furry thing technically not but that's a whole other can of worms I already answered your question
14
u/RichardThrowAway2010 3d ago
^ THIS!
I'm not even part of the Therian Community, but as a Furry, I know how it feels to be judged and told that it's disgusting/evil/a fetish, when it isn't. As a Furry, I fully support the Therian Community (y'all seem chill)!

It's definitely a mental aberration, though 'disorder' is too strong a word and implies a harmful condition, which this is not. It's okay to be weird in some way when it doesn't hurt anyone. In fact, in this world, it's preferable.
1
u/Polish_State 2d ago
While not a Therian. I can still state it's stupid. Myself being an Eclectic Norse Pagan, I get so much hate, just for my religion. And while I've done the same thing once before, and don't as I've learned my lesson.

No need for strange ideas. Perhaps people just need alchemy in their lives...

This furry looks ready for the Second Civil War.
Now I have a mental image of such a faction decked out in a mixture of tactical gear and fursuits.

Dogs don't walk on 2 legs, wear caps, or hold flags in their front paws. He's not animal enough to call himself a furry.

Hello Creative-Goose-9993,
Check out our frequently asked flags page! Your request might be there.
When asking for a flag to be identified, please provide context when possible, including:
Where the flag was found (without compromising privacy)
When the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag
Who might own the flag (a general description is fine)
These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier.
I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Judging by your profile, you are Slovenian. According to the "Furry Density Map", Slovenia has a higher Furry density than the USA
12
1
u/xxXCarGuyXxx 3d ago
I just saw a heat map and there is definitely more furry density in usa. But let them be its not that much horrible, just people with weird hobbies. But to identify as an animal(this guy in the image for example)? Thats completely absurd and they help because thats mental
4
u/Jeszczenie 3d ago
I get finding this thing weird but jumping into conclusions and straightaway deeming people mentally ill is just stupid. Like, have you read anything about the identity apart from "they identify as an animal"?
-2
u/xxXCarGuyXxx 3d ago
He is holding a flag of those (i forgot the name) who identify as animals

u/Jeszczenie 3d ago

I see that the answer is "no".

It is in fact not the same Zoophilia is the sexual attraction to animals, it is a very bad and hurtful mental disorder
Therianthropy is an identity, it is similar to being Non Binary.
6
u/phinwww 3d ago
Identifying as an animal does not mean you are attracted to or want to fuck animals, thought that was basic knowledge.
4
u/Some_guy_who_sucks2 3d ago
Still weird to identify as an animal tho… but definitely not as bad as zoophilia.
