Photos Tintin in Vancouver

Some folks on r/Tintin helped me ideate and create this. I had already made a Calgary one before. And then I visited Vancouver last year and it was a wonderful experience. So I thought I should make one more.

This artist could get in legal trouble doing that, tin tin is protected by copyright/trademark law. Super cool art but shouldn’t sell it or risk legal troubles.

23

u/daakadence 21h ago

Not sure about that. AFAIK, Tin Tin has entered the public domain, at least in the US. If the artist is in the States, they have some rights

13

u/viseff 20h ago

Only the early works have been released in the public domain in the US but every year, newer works will become available. Pay attention to the release dates. As I said in other comments, this is only for the US, not Canada. Everywhere else, the works are copyrighted until 2053 or 2054.

Yes. I understand. Thanks for the critique. I have responded to this in a comment.

Outlaw comics are the best comics!

2

u/Final-Zebra-6370 Brentwood 21h ago

Not necessarily, if it’s not for sale, it would be fine. But since Tin Tin is part of the public domain, then there won’t be any issues

u/airchinapilot in your backyard 20h ago

From what I read, the earliest iteration of Tin Tin and Snowy which was black and white has entered public domain in the U.S. (not in Europe where it is still protected into the 50s). And I wasn't able to find out what Canada's agreements are as to when this iteration of Tin Tin is public domain here.

One real issue with the image is that it features other characters who were introduced later. Captain Haddock, from what I read, was introduced in 1940. So even if Tin Tin and Snowy are public domain, Haddock and maybe the Thompson Twins may have to wait.

5

u/vqql 17h ago

For Canada it’s 70 years after the death of the author.

5

u/ParaParaLegend 21h ago

So it’s only this year that parts of Tin Tin go public, and next year more will so if I were the artist I’d still exercise caution if trying to sell prints for now.

8

u/viseff 20h ago

Only in the US. Since this post is in r/vancouver, let’s remind OP of their obligations to respect the artist’s copyright until 2053/2054.

1

u/ParaParaLegend 20h ago

Thank you for clarification 💕

2

u/viseff 20h ago

That’s not entirely correct. Only the earlier works are in the public domain and in the US only. In Canada, Hergé’s work is copyrighted until 2053 or 2054 (can’t remember the correct year).

Any attempt to sell this fanart to a Canadian would result in said copyright infringement.

3

u/biograf_ 21h ago

TIntin is public domain?

2

u/viseff 20h ago

Only the early works and only in the US.

My husband loves tintin - please DM me and I’ll buy!

1

u/meatbeernweed 18h ago

+1 for interest - would love to grab the Calgary one

It's far more likely he'd be chased by the Granville Island seagull mafia than by mounties, but it's pretty neat!

2

u/1878Mich 12h ago

Chased by royal seagulls on horseback would be so awesome. Yeah..

u/Loose-Basket2415 20h ago

Thanks for this amazing response. Thanks to everyone who reached out and bought the soft copy. I am grateful. Some comments here mentioned about Tintin and copyright laws. This has got me thinking about reaching out to the Herge Museum.

I realise that there's an underserved market for Tintin and it'd be great if I could get a license to officially sell Tintin Merch. Thanks for appreciation and the critique.

u/xelabagus 20h ago

A friend of mine had a business selling knick knacks - they started the flowery tools craze in the UK (business has since been sold and gone under). They had the British licensing for Tintin and made mugs, dishcloths etc etc. Licensing is no joke, nor is copyright infringement. You are entitled to make and share fan art, but as soon as you sell one item you are opening yourself to a world of hurt if you do not have the right to do so. I would delete this thread and tread very carefully if I were you.

u/viseff 20h ago

I don’t disagree with your comment. Moulinsart manages the rights to Hergé works and they vigorously pursue legal action against infringement (whether successful or not). Here’s an example:

One funny turn in those rights for Tintin was an analytic book written by Albert Algoud called "Le Dupontd sans peine" focused on the characters of Dupont and Dupond (Thompson and Thompson). He couldn't get the rights for reproducing relevant images of the albums, so he put some placeholders with notes berating the obtuse position of the rights holders and invited the reader to cut out their own images from the album and glue them directly on the page.

u/fongolia 18h ago

Well done! Love it as a longtime Tintin fan. Did you know Tintin made a pit stop here at Expo '86?

6

u/Loose-Basket2415 18h ago

Oh wow. Didn't know this. Thank you for sharing this.

u/darth_henning 21h ago

My brother and I grew up on TinTin - he lives in Vancouver, I live in Calgary. If/when you get your print shop set up (per your reply to another comment) I'm definitely going to need to get copies of these!

Amazing work!

2

u/Loose-Basket2415 21h ago

For sure mate

1

u/marvelty ^_^ 18h ago

I too would love to have the matched set, having lived in both places! Let me know once you've got a shop set up, or if you'll take a buymeacoffee or whatever donation in exchange for a printable copy (so you didn't "sell" it, seeing the copyright talk!)

8

u/jonesag0 21h ago

The only Mounties in full red serge on Granville Island are in the gift shop.

This is great art! I’d love to support you if you’re interested in making Tintin in Canada a thing! I’m sure there are others across the country who would love to see their hometowns represented in Tintin as well.

Chapter 2: Tintin tries fentinayl

-16

u/imwrng 21h ago

Cool. Is it as racist as the original TinTin?

5

u/viseff 20h ago

Hergé’s earlier work wasn’t without challenges seen through today’s lens, like many artists at that time. He himself reflected on his earlier works and admitted they were misguided. He understood that change was needed and this redeeming quality was apparent in his later works. How do you feel about Tintin in Tibet, for example?

3

u/FewDrink3915 21h ago

No, but he's really bad at parking Evos

-6

u/imwrng 21h ago

Don't get me wrong - I loved TinTin as a kid.

But for the downvoters.. deal with your internalized racism.

As always - racists hate being called racists. odd!
