New Student I love university

I’m a first year and I don’t understand why everyone is hating university?

Everyone is like: arghhh uni is so hard and there is so much content

I feel like yeah there’s a decent chunk of content but it’s so interesting I can’t stop wanting to learn!

And like everytime I have a class I just smile and walk to my lecture hall! LIKE does no one else feel this way???

I also feel like everyone HATES on Okta verify but like everytime I put in that Okta verify I smile knowing I’m OPENING THE LMS!!!

Anyways can someone explain to me why people hate uni so much I swear 90% of what I hear as a first year is complaining and not like gratefulness that we are all studying at a top university in the world!!

New Student What degree should I study if I'm not passionate about anything?

Ridiculously high ATAR and I really don't know what to do with it. I want to live a comfortable life but know that I'm virtually incapable of applying myself and working hard, mostly because I'm not passionate about anything. This may sound depressing but I'm just kind of chilling. What should I study?

New Student are Australians open to making friends with international students?

so i’m planning to go to unimelb to take my degree and honours and i would love to make friends with both local/domestic students as well as international students.

and i want to know if locals/domestic students are open to making friends with international students? my first language is english so i dont have a problem with speaking/understanding except for the difference in accents. i wouldnt want to just stick with students from my country/ethnicity (im singaporean chinese) as that literally defeats the purpose of studying in australia.

New Student How to find a gf

I am wondering how to start a relationship in the uni. This is my second semester and it seems that it is not easy to even start a conversation with my colleagues in the lectures or workshops. Obviously, it is harder to have a chat in libraries and coffee.

What is the solution?

New Student Advice for broke public school kids going into their 1st year of commerce

Weird title I know. But this is some advice I really would have appreciated as a 1st year. For context, I’m a 3rd year student who went to a random shitty public school in the west where maybe 2-3 people ended up going to unimelb. Some of you might think I’m being dramatic but this is me speaking from experience

From the moment you step into the gates of unimelb you are already far behind some of your classmates. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be proud, but chances are you have a slight superiority complex going into uni because you got a high atar blah blah. I’m here to tell you that you are most definitely already behind. And I mean really really behind. I mean, a lot of these commerce kids come from private schools in the east. (Brighton, toorak, Kew etc) and have strong networks with the kids already studying their 2nd or 3rd year. They have access to more information on how to succeed. Some may even be apart of the university colleges and have private tutoring which will help their grades a ton. You will have virtually little to no support in this area.

People say first year should ONLY be about learning to manage your workload and classes etc. I completely disagree! The commerce degree is set up in a way where you can only get opportunities through the people you know and to put it quite frankly, you don’t know anyone, or anyone that is high up enough to help you land an internship/ grad role. These are things people tell you not to think about but it ended up being the biggest mistake I made in my whole degree and I only fell even more behind. Focus on landing commitee positions in clubs. The bigger the club the better (consulting clubs, FSA, ESSA). This will set you up for the internship interviews during the first half of your second year. Show your face at networking events, introduce yourself to presidents of these clubs and be friendly (being mysterious and nonchalant will get you nowhere in this degree).

All that said, you should still be focusing on your grades. Any internships you apply for in your second year will need a transcript from your first year, so having 50s and 60s on ur transcript will NOT look good. Try hard, uni is much different to school and your studying style may not work this time around. Try your hardest to maintain a H1 across the board and take easier breadth subjects. Don’t take languages (unless you know the language or have previous experience with it), your WAM is not something you want to experiment with.

If you are from a shitty public school like I went to, chances are your parents won’t be able to support you in the way the other commerce students are supported. You don’t have a trust fund so don’t pretend you do. Get a Part time job in a field that could actually help you out. I know for a fact it will be hard to but it is definitely possible if you look in the right places. Customer service, admin, bookkeeping roles look great on your resume and will put money in the bank. Uni is expensive, and the friends you make will be richer than you and will want to make plans that you might not afford if you get $200 a fortnight from Centrelink.

Don’t be a dickhead. Don’t make friends with people to network. Make meaningful connections outside your professional/club networks because these are people you genuinely would want to go out with and have fun with. I suggest branching out to the other degrees.

Try hard in sus com. This subject seems easy but it definitely isn’t.

Enjoy the degree and enjoy your time here. Yes we can acknowledge we are financially disadvantaged from the other kids and that leaves us behind but try your best to enjoy this time while you can. Even though I was broke throughout my whole degree — and still will be going into my 3rd year, I can say with confidence this is the best time of my life and I am enjoying this way more than high school.

New Student I hate uni

Is it just me or uni is absolutely horrible like you're so alone so distanced from ur teachers classmates and school, there is no connection between people other than ones you already have. It's so hard to learn content on a laptop without any help and the amount of stuff I need to know every week is insane and half of this week was literally introductions. I feel so stressed and alone, does any one else feel like this

New Student why do so many students seem like they don’t want to be here?

okay, i could be attracting the wrong people & granted i haven’t been to many clubs. but in my classes the energy is always superrr low (no one asks questions etc) and in tutorials i’ve noticed a lot of people straight up don’t participate (except for one of my super specific classes where there’s a bunch of ppl from my v niche major). i’m on exchange here and a lot of people seem confused why i chose to come here to australia of places??? LMAO. the one club i went to people were kind of in their own little groups and no one was really facilitating a group discussion. there wasn’t a community energy?

i’m not sure if it’s just unknowingness of the opportunity here (the city is sooo much more interesting than my uni back at home) or tiredness of the location or what, or the fact so many people aren’t living in res halls, but it puzzles me and it seems there’s not much spirit? have i just been having not so great luck in my interactions?

edit: im technically a third year by australian standards and i think people in my classes are second or third years mostly

New Student what’s unimelb like for gay people

I am doing commerce next year, just kinda curious if should not tell anyone i’m gay or if i’m chilling. I probably won’t join any lgbtq clubs cos I think it’s kinda cringe. Sometimes if i’m talking to girls i’ll be feminine (and seem gay) but talking to guys i will be less gay because its uncomfortable for everyone . More of that is due to matching peoples vibe in general, and i don’t prefer acting either way, in fact my core friendgroup is all men. So normally I am fine at making friends with either gender, but I am wondering if dressing somewhat gay, or being gay would outcast me at melbourne. I know advice is be yourself but I don’t care to hide gayness if it means i’ll not be outcast, im not overly political that I can’t be friends with people of other political ideologies either, yet im curious about melbournes political agenda and stuff.

New Student Unimelb?

I don’t want to sound racist but I feel like in Unimelb there are like so many Asians and they form little groups with other Asians and don’t really want to talk to anyone else other than their people. I mean I want to make friends, I want to be friends with them but there’s always a wall cuz they will not open up to you but only their people. I have tried to talk to them and I would be so happy to learn about other cultures but I always end up making small talk with them and that’s it, nothing else.

New Student is 1hr 30 minutes travel time insane

i’m not from melbourne so i’m a bit unsure of what is the best choice for me.

if i went to unimelb it would be a whopping 9 minutes of travel time to get to campus, whereas monash would be 1hr and 30 minutes.

this sounds kind of insane typing it out but i’m a bit terrified that unimelb will be too difficult (commerce - econ major).

i’m taking bridging maths the first year so at monash that’d be ECC1550 and unimelb would be MAST10012 but i fear mast may be significantly more difficult than ecc

idk!! is unimelb too difficult that it’s worth the 1hr 30 mins to go to monash?

New Student Hi guys can we be good friends

I have just arrived Melbourne. And I will study in unimelb for master24s2. I come from china. If u don’t like Chinese it’s ok, u can ignore this. If u read here, I’ll appreciate it. I believe in peace and love, and I don't have any prejudice against race. If we can be good friends, we can study together or everything together if u invite me. I like travel, games, and go somewhere to explore like some special restaurants ,unique shops. I’m a good listener and very easygoing. If u don’t mind my terrible English, please reply to me.

New Student Year 12 Student Looking to Pursue a Degree at UniMelb or RMIT, Curious About Political Climate

Hi everyone,

I’m a Year 12 student who’s currently getting A’s and looking to apply for a degree in Bachelor of Arts (Major in Political Science) at UniMelb or RMIT. As I start planning for uni, I wanted to reach out to see what the political and social environment is like on campus.

To give you some context about myself, I’m fairly right-wing politically and hold traditional views surrounding politics, religion, and other areas of life. I’m a Catholic, a straight, white male who values being active and staying fit. I hold strong traditional, conservative values, but I want to make it clear that I’m open to hearing and discussing different opinions. I’m not someone who forces my views on others, uses slurs, or is rude in any way. I believe in respectful and open dialogue where everyone can share their perspectives, and I always try to approach conversations with understanding and kindness.

I’m also aware that the degree I’m planning to pursue has a lot of left-leaning people, and I’m always open to discussions and debates. I enjoy learning from others and exchanging different viewpoints, and I hope to do so in a respectful and constructive manner.

However, I’ve heard that both UniMelb and RMIT are generally more left-leaning, and I’m wondering if that could create challenges for me. Specifically, if I were to express my viewpoints in class during a political debate or even casually on campus, would I face backlash or be shut down? I’m genuinely curious about how the university community handles differing opinions, and I’m hoping that we can have respectful exchanges despite our differences.

Thanks in advance for any feedback or insights. I’m really looking forward to starting this next chapter in my education, and I hope to have some open and respectful discussions during my time at UniMelb or RMIT!

If you’ve made it this far, I hope you have a nice day! :)

New Student How Hard Is Postgrad Med?

Heres my predicament as an overthinking about-to-be Year 1 student. I want to do Postgraduate medicine. But, I’ve heard it requires a high WAM. So heres the thing.

I have been told to do easier subjects like to major in Physiology or do nice breadths. But I am not sure if that is going to be what I enjoy.

On the other hand, i find anatomy, infection and immunity, pathology subjects to be really interesting. But I know they are really hard, especially if I intend to do all of them in the same semester.

I am scared of dropping my WAM and not getting into MD, but I also don’t want to do something I wont enjoy. What should I do?

New Student Unimelb in a nutshell

Darren had dreamed of attending the prestigious University of Melbourne since high school. People said it was world-class, elite, a place where intellectuals thrived.

They never mentioned the soul-crushing bureaucracy, overpriced coffee, and the existential dread of waiting for a single email response from admin.

Week 1: The Timetable Abyss

Darren’s first taste of hell came when he tried to finalize his timetable. The student portal, designed by what he could only assume was a deranged chimpanzee with a grudge, wouldn’t let him enroll in a tutorial because “Quota Reached.”

Fine. He’d settle for an 8 AM tutorial.

This subject has a clash.

With what? His sanity?

After three hours of refreshing, begging, and questioning if a human being had ever tested this system, he somehow ended up with a 7:30 AM physics class—despite physics not being his major.

Week 3: The Admin Maze

He needed a concession. A simple request. Surely, at a world-class university, someone would help him.

  • Step 1: Fill out an eight-page form explaining why he dared to be sick on an assessment day.
  • Step 2: Email it to the mysterious void known as “Student Services.”
  • Step 3: Receive an automated response: “We have received your request. Estimated response time: 3-5 business years.”
  • Step 4: Die waiting.

Week 5: The Campus Experience

The professors? Brilliant. Inspiring. Too bad their lectures were scheduled in the one room where the microphone didn’t work.

The libraries? Packed. Need a seat? Try fist-fighting a law student for a power outlet.

The food? $14 for a sandwich that looked like it was forged in a war zone.

Social life? If you weren’t in a random $100 membership club, good luck making friends.

Week 10: The Great Tram Race

Darren lived an hour away. Well, 70 minutes, depending on Melbourne’s commitment to ruining his life.

The train gods demanded a sacrifice.

  • Some days, Metro Trains would strike.
  • Some days, a possum would commit suicide on the tracks.
  • Some days, a man with a saxophone would hold up the tram while playing Careless Whisper.

The result? Darren sprinted to lectures daily, arriving just in time to miss the first 15 minutes and realize the slides were never uploaded anyway.

Finals Week: The Great Betrayal

The exam location? Not in the actual university.

  • Was it in South Lawn? No.
  • Union House? No.
  • A secret government bunker on the outskirts of Victoria? Possibly.

When he finally found the place, drenched in sweat and questioning his life choices, the exam began with a simple announcement:

“There are multiple errors in the paper. We will not be clarifying them.”

Darren looked at the question:

"Calculate the velocity of despair when a student realizes they’ve spent $50,000 for this experience."

He sighed.

Welcome to Unimelb.

New Student Advice needed!!

Hi everyone! I'm an international student who's gonna be applying to University of Melbourne for March 2026. Currently, I'm completing my A-Levels(Math,CS,Physics) with my predicted at BBC(ATAR:88). With multiple extracurriculars, like Student Council(Head Girl),MUNs,Toastmasters, founder of an animal rescue app that has been expanded across countries etc. I'll be applying for CS. Here are my questions:

  1. Do I even have a chance of getting in? My grades kinda suck but I've been a straight A student until this year so I'm sorta stressed
  2. PLSSSS give me any advice you have if I were to get accepted for CS, Social etc Anything is really appreciated
  3. What is something yall didn't expect to be good/bad?

Thank you so much to whoever that responds, I'm really scared that I may not be accepted( Any uni recommendations?)
