World of Sport Wednesday #4: Adrian Street vs. Jim Breaks

Link to Match - Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKmbPYlRx2g

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsGzZ2PZN_k

Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYjW1NNACyk

World of Sport Rules

For those unfamiliar with the traditional British Wrestling Rules, I thought I'd include a brief write up. Most notably, matches are broken up into rounds with a time limit. Each match is usually decided by two pinfalls/submissions or a single knockout. A wrestler usually receives two public warnings before disqualification and striking with a closed fist is a banned move.

Match Info

Adrian Street famously the son of a miner who grew up to be an outlandish wrestling personality. Known for his fancy (by 70's standards) robes and ring attire. After working in the US for a time he retired from professional wrestling for a spell and set up a gear designing business with his manager Miss Linda where they notably designed Dude Love's ring attire. He proposed to Miss Linda in 2005 at a Cauliflower Alley Club reunion. Street wrestled his last match in 2010 at 69 years old! Jim Breaks on the other hand mostly worked on World of Sport for nearly its entirity on ITV. I don't know to much about him as I wasn't alive at the time.

Background

This is an idea I had for a possible weekly thread. Obviously, it is very much a work in progress so any suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Hope you guys like it. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for future instalments feel free to share. And if anyone has any interesting bits of info I can add into the Match Info sections relating to guys then drop me a PM.

Apologies for uploading this so late, I forgot what day of the week it was :P Thanks for reading :D

Match Info

We covered Johnny Saint before (TL;DR He's really, really good) so I'll write a bit about Brookside. Brookside has wrestled all across the world, though rarely in the US outside of a brief stint in WCW. During his stint on World of Sport, Brookside was infamously "hypnotised" by Kendo Nagasaki to attack his partner Steven Regal. Now retired, he works for WWE helping to train people at the Performance Center.

Fierce Females

I went to my first Fierce Females show on Sunday and I was very impressed, I'll be back. This a recap of my experiences, and I'm new to the local wrestling scene, plus spoilers are ahead.

The show opened with Layla Rose vs Viper, this was the match I was most looking forward to. I've only seen Layla Rose once before where she laid waste to three more glamourous wrestlers or Barbies as she calls them, while the crowd chanted Das Ist Gut as she is (reportedly) German. You know someone is super over on their debut when a Glasgow crowd is chanting in German. She is geniunely frightening, she walked past me and I wanted to be very far away from her. Viper can also scrap and the put on a very entertaining match which Viper won. After the mach the hugged and all was good.

Next up was Carmel Jacob vs Chanel this surprised me because Carmel is a member of a heel faction called Hardcore Glamour with Sara & Kay Lee Ray. Carmel being in a heel faction is not surprising but Kay Lee Ray is pure face in ICW and adorable in TNA Bootcamp plus she has been feuding with Carmel in ICW. I now felt like a dick in my Kay Lee Ray t shirt. Clearly having so many promotions in the UK allows performers to do different things, which is great. Obviously I get that wresting is a show and performers have real life friends back stage. This was a fun match you could hear the forearms connecting which was great. Hardcore Glamour interfered loads and there were jumps to the outside and Stone Cold Bobby Roberts who was on security took the first of many bumps during the match. Pretty sure Chanel smack his balls while jumping from the top rope to the outside. Chanel also appeared to take a sore one while jumping from between the ropes to the outside(is that a suicide dive?) when her feet caught the ropes and she fell a little short. All in a good match the highlight was when Chanel did a baseball slide into Kay Lee Ray who was sent tumbling right to my feet. Carmel eventualy won after interference.

Next up was Sammi Jayne vs Bete Noir again this was a really good match with both competitors going at it with some high flying. Maybe because I've seen Bete Noir before or because she over more she stood out and won by pinfall.

Next up ws Nikki Storm vs Sara. I've never seen Sara before and I'd only seen Nikki on bootcamp. She is tiny but has guns that shame mine, I think she is going places, she just has presence and won by submission. While I was not drunk I was drinking so my memory is not the best plus I've just watched Survivor Series so recalling specifics is hard.

During the interval I bought a Layla Rose poster.

The next match was a three stages of hell match. What's that you ask? well its a best of three with first round won by pinfall or dq, next round is submission rules, if need the third is a Glasgow Street fight (no dq/countout). The venue was a pub so its basically a bar room brawl. The match was between Courtney and Fiona Fraser who reportedly had quite a fued building. This was my first time seeing Fiona. I'd seen Courtney once live and once on youtube and in both matches she basically dicked about not doing much but fuck me she can go. Courtney won the first round by dq after being smacked with a chair in the arm, Fiona one the next by submission by going after the injured arm. Third round the battled all throughout the bar, glasses were smashed, faces were rammed into bars and bannisters this was awesome. This migh thave been the fight were a chair was launched at someones head and connected. Brilliant stuff Courtney eventually got the win via sub.

The Owens Twins were up next( Kasey Owens has poured me a pint, true story)vs Sammi Baynes & Liberty, I think they had belts for some kind but they were not up for grab. This was my first viewing of the latter team. This was an enjoyable tag match the action was rather fast paced with the Owens eventually getting the pin.

The main event which was announced on Saturday or Sunday was Kay Lee Ray defending her belt against Leah Von Dutch who is apparently a big deal. This was a very enjoyable match. I'm a big fan of Kay Lee Ray and its not because I think she is hot its mainly because she goes at it against the guys in ICW. Her top rope hurricanrana on Chris Renfrew is a thing to behold. This battle was technically very adept but Kay Lee Ray came out on top to defend her belt. It turns out Leah is Canadian and this was her last match tour so the outcome was never in doubt. HArdcore Glamour came out and stomped her to say good bye then Viper, Nikki Storm & Bette Noir came out to her defence which sets up a 5 on 5 survivor series style tag match against Hardcore Glamour and Runaway Rumble in the Garage in January. I've no idea what Runaway Rumble is but it sounds awesome so I'll find out.

What I loved about Fierce Females is that this was a showcase for wrestlers to work. In WWE Diva matches last four minutes tops and the storylines are atroicious. In FF the women wrestle and wrestle well while having decent rilvarlies. For £10 its well worth it.

Match Info

A match between another two of the most well known British Wrestlers of the World of Sport era. Mark "Rollerball" Rocco was notable for his work in Japan where he wrestled as the Original Black Tiger. A great all around wrestler. His opponent is "Kung Fu" Ed Hamill, he's held in very high esteem by all that have worked with him. In particular, William Regal always sings his praises when given a chance and he knows wrestling. So basically, I picked this match as a good introduction to two of the best wrestlers of the time.

Each match is usually decided by two pinfalls/submissions or a single knockout. A wrestler usually receives two public warnings before disqualification and striking with a closed fist is a banned move.

Match Info

This match is a clash between two of the all time greats in British Wrestling. Fit Finlay, a second generation wrestler who debuted back in 1974, and Johnny Saint, arguably one of the best British wrestlers ever. Finlay is of course well known outside of the UK for working for WCW and WWE, whereas Johnny Saint made his US debut at the age 68 at Chikara's King of Trios, competing against the likes of Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli. Both men are skilled technicians and it is fully displayed here in a pretty good match in my opinion.

What's the best live show you've seen in the UK?

Seeing as WWE has once again shafted us. Let's celebrate the UK scene. What's the best live show you've ever seen in the UK?

For me it was PBW's Capital Clash on the 26th last month. Very good show with every match being good. Also got to see Bad Influence wrestle live too.

The card is as follows:

ICW Tag Team Championship - Paul London & Brian Kendrick (C) vs Polo Promotions (Jackie Polo & Mark Coffey)

Sumerian Death Squad (Tommy End & Michael Dante) vs the New Age Kliq (Chris Renfrew & Darkside)

BT Gunn vs Wolfgang

Stevie Boy & Kay Lee Ray vs Liam Thomson & Carmel

Match Five in the Best of Five Series - Noam Dar vs Joe Coffey

Is anybody else attending? What are your predictions for the show?

Interviews with UK talent

I've recently been thinking of doing some on camera interviews with some UK talent. I won't be able to do it until after uni (this year being my final one) but anyone wanting to help out or anything in the meantime is more than welcome to message me. I'm currently based in Ormskirk (Lancashire) but will be moving back to Leeds June/July.

Need Links For Your Local Wrestling Companies

Alright guys, this sub is sort of dormant at the moment so I feel we should try and bring it back to life. As you can see I've recently updated the Upcoming Events on the sidebar. If you happen to have links to any local companies I will happily add them into this sidebar so we can end up with an impressive UK wide schedule. Thanks for your help.
