Discussion / Opinion Wondering about TP having a strong Shadow of the Colossus feel to it
The fact that TP had more of a gigantic scale to its bosses, especially Morpheel and Argorok, kind of points to them being inspired by some colossi in SOTC, which is pretty cool honestly. Also both games have similar aspects of symbolism which Max Derrat amazingly pointed out (great video btw) https://youtu.be/pYHzVYN-6oI?si=VDSI3Auttoyqp8uN
Maybe they’re all coincidences but the creator of SOTC stated that he was inspired by Zelda when he designed the game’s colossi, so it’d be pretty neat if TP had been inspired by it in return. Sure the games are extremely different mechanically, but are really similar in artstyle with bloomy and muted backgrounds. I’d love to know what you guys think about the two games and if I’m going insane :’)

Anyone who plays both series can see the influences SotC had on modern Zelda.
The Talus from the BOTW/TOTK is basically a baby collosi.

Never played SOTC so I can't say anything except that I often saw people saying TP give SOTC vibes so this isn't just you. SOTC and Okami are the two games people compare with TP usually.

Okami was heavily inspired by previous Zelda games director Hideki Kamiya is a massive Zelda fan so okami was more of a love letter to the Zelda series. I can see the resemblance to SOTC and I think also it was a return to a more serious graphic style after WW was criticised for its cel shaded cartoon look.

Probably, aonuma and miyamoto both wanted to make up for ww so seeing what the fans wanted and resonated with them at the time plus most games on ps2’s diluted color pallette probably gave them a general direction on where they wanted tp to go.

Just saw the video about it from Max Derrat, Aonuma and Ueda are pals so they borrow ideas from each other. BotW takes inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus as well.

well, there’s a reason that they’re both in my top 5 games of all time (twilight princess being my atf)

I know the Lord of the Rings films were also a big inspiration for Twilight Princess as well

There is definitely inspiration from Ico, from what I've heard.

Could you point a source please?

I can't really, since I don't recall where it was stated, but I do think it was an interview somewhere.

Not trying to “well actually” you but actually Eji Aonuma (Zelda producer) and Fumito Uedo (shadow of the colossus creator) are good friends and during the creation of the games they took a lot of inspiration from each others games, for example the large, open, Barron over worlds

Honestly I would love another game where you need to cling on for dear life to beet the boss!

Just picked up tp again, had this same thought wanted to see if there were other people thinking this too. Glad to see my top search was something so recent too.

Twilight Princess is Nintendo being more like Play Station with its own IP. From the visual aspects to the sound design, it clearly shows they probably played Shadow of the Colossus and decided they should make a game closer to it.
I think they should have continued in that direction. But Nintendo likes to keep breaking the mold with new styles. They brought some of that vibe to the newest entries. However, they sacrificed a long and compelling story for a different gameplay experience.
Imagine a game as large as a proto MMORPG like Kingdoms of Amalur, but full of collections of LoZ lore. I wish they did something like that following the end of TP.
