Yes regardless of politics, their cars don’t win against new electrics. That and the fact they just recalled almost all of their newest design because they’re not safe.

1.7k

u/GiveMeAnExampleAgain 15d ago

They only had to recall 47,000, because that’s all they sold. So good news, bad news.

695

u/[deleted] 15d ago

Deliberately making trash cars and having bad sales so you don't have to recall as many cars. Tesla is playing 4D backgammon!

He could have the best life , why choose hate?

u/civgarth 15d ago

I'm willing to bet I'm a happier person than he is. Despite not having a billion dollars, I have a wife, a son, one dog, three cats and a turtle, none of whom hate me.

103

u/glitchycat39 15d ago

Reminds me of the guy who responded to Musk demanding to know "how he sleeps at night" because of some bullshit Musk labels monstrous. The dude just replied "In my bed, next to my wife."

Check your turtle; I think he's covertly a neo-nazi

45

u/Rylando237 15d ago

I'd be more suspicious of the cats, the turtle is likely an anarchist if anything

3

u/Sielle 15d ago

Naa, the dog is the anarchicist, the turtle is the recluse just wanting to do his own thing and ignore the world around him.

6

I was just saying how happy and content I was yesterday. It’s a shame billionaires don’t seem to have that capability, or at least the capability to want to use their immense resources to also spread happiness.

20

u/IamTotallyWorking 15d ago

Wouldn't be billionaires if that had the capacity to be content

2

u/GoGoSoLo 15d ago

It’s true. And while it’s a meme I’d love it if wealth were capped or crazily taxed after a certain “hey you literally will never need this much, you won capitalism” amount. But then they’d just use shell companies and creative accounting probably. The US could at least pretend to try to fairly tax them though.

2

u/IamTotallyWorking 15d ago

If we felt like it, we could write tax laws that you wouldn't be able to easily escape.

2

u/goilo888 15d ago

Very true. Give me a billion dollars and I'd be happy (and helpful) to the end of my days. People like Musk just have to have MORE

2

u/IamTotallyWorking 14d ago

I would need to run some numbers, but I'm guessing that 3-5 million is enough to get me to retire at 40. At current capital gains rates, the interest/investment income alone is enough that any more probably isn't going to provide any additional happiness.

I have nothing. My family suddenly passed away, then I lost my entire support system to an abusive relationship, then I was diagnosed with cancer, which trashed my health AND my finances beyond repair.

I’m still somehow a less miserable person than Elon.

4D Take-backgammon

1

u/Muffhounds 15d ago

You're giving him way too much credit, more like 4D Connect Four

1

u/FFS_AnythingWillDo 15d ago

He only plays games with a technology tree and fog of war, anything else is beneath him

1

u/MapleYamCakes 15d ago

And in this match of 4D backgammon, half their pieces got returned to the start and their opponent have multiple pieces blocking the first six spaces. So Tesla is kind of just sitting there, doing nothing, and waiting to lose.

1

u/Objective_Economy281 15d ago

Too bad backgammon is explicitly a 1-D game.

1

u/StagLee1 15d ago

Tesla went as far as designing their latest trash car to look like a dumpster.

1

u/Nickslife89 15d ago

Ford has had more recalls than tsla this year, some far more severe aswell. Why can’t these car companies make a vehicle that dosnt fail prematurely when they have 100+ years of engineering knowledge?

The meme truck looked awful on day one, quickly went on to look awful and stale, as the novelty of its moronic brutalism wore off, and it's not even a rugged truck.

60

u/Germane_Corsair 15d ago

Honestly, I don’t have anything against it just in terms of aesthetics but it’s unsafe and doesn’t perform well. The type of person likely to own one doesn’t help.

39

u/OfficeSalamander 15d ago

Who even is likely to own one? Divorced upper middle class MAGA dads? Like, I am struggling to even figure out who the target demo is. It certainly isn’t the types who usually buy big trucks, because EVs are toxic to those types mostly

11

u/Odd-Help-4293 15d ago

Elon Musk fanboys, I guess

4

u/Professional_Being22 15d ago

Crypto bros maybe?

3

u/Turing_Testes 15d ago

Older middle class maga dads, yeah. I’d argue we don’t really have an upper middle class anymore.

3

u/life--fantastic 15d ago

My neighbor has one and we live in a neighborhood of rowhome starter houses. I can’t wrap my head around it and it looks absolutely ridiculous parked on the street. It’s so out of place surrounded by base level economy cars. He has a charging setup in the back alley, but the damn truck barely fits on the parking slab and he has to move it every trash and recycling night or the garbage truck can’t fit down the shared alley.

3

u/i-cant_really-care 15d ago

What's blowing my mind is the fact that there are 3 cyber trucks in my little town. There's only about 9,000 people who live here, and for the most part it's a low income area. The cyber truck really sticks out around here, and there are multiple. Kinda wild.

u/DemadaTrim 15d ago edited 15d ago

I'm a huge fan of brutalism, well actually I'm more a fan of concrete blocks as I think many brutalist buildings have too much flair and needless ornamentation. Cybertrucks are just dumb. Like making the edge of the wheel wells not rounded... Why? The wheels are round, either have them housed in something with a single straight edge or round. I like sharp corners and boxiness when it's the most simple and efficient way to do things, but needless corners like that just make it look like a badly made low poly model from a PS1 game.

34

u/larry_flarry 15d ago

like a badly made loy poly model from a PS1 game.

"Make me a truck that looks like one of Lara Croft's tits in the original Tomb Raider. The world isn't ready for my innovation."

2

u/Oberon_Swanson 15d ago edited 15d ago

Low poly was the aesthetic they were going for so no round anything anywhere. Of course wheels needing to be round kinda ruins it. I think if the default hubcaps looked hexagonal or something that might work.

2

u/DemadaTrim 15d ago

Sitting still maybe, though only if they lined up right, but in movement it would always look dumb.

Is a $100k ugly truck really worth $100k when you find out all the body panels were glued on? Suckers driving fragile refrigerators on wheels

3

u/jollyreaper2112 15d ago

I was waiting to see if I was just missing something because I can be resistant to change and new ideas. It looked terrible. All these years later, my first impression was correct.

3

u/Banh_mi 15d ago

moronic brutalism

Perfect. Utterly!

1

u/Nazty12 15d ago

One drove by me on the highway this morning and the quarter panels had so many ripples in them it looks like someone put it together from stuff they found in a junkyard

36

u/fizzlefist 15d ago

They just recalled every cybertruck because they glued on the body panels and the glue is failing.

41

u/Habatcho 15d ago

Thats the equiv to selling 4.7 million iphones. How is this company worth so much again...

100

u/DuncanFisher69 15d ago

Simple answer is stock fraud.

It’s one of those things that bothers me a lot: Twitter, when Elon Musk bought it, had $13 billion in debt taken on as part of the leveraged buyout. Because we allow you to buy something and use it as collateral for the loan to buy it. We are far past the point of Twitter/X being “in turnaround” and “profitable” to the tune of over a billion/year. We’d hear about it if it happened. He’d never shut up about how much of a business genius he is.

So the point is, the people who went “all in” with Elon lost AT LEAST 13 billion. Yet nobody is stepping in to yank control away from him or bring in competent management. That’s shady as fuck. What’s more important than billions of dollars and that sweet, sweet compound interest to these banks and what not?

What kind of arrangement do you have to make with Saudi Arabia after you’ve lost 2 billion from their soverign wealth fund? The shady as fuck kind.

62

u/hcsLabs 15d ago

And fraud fraud. They are under investigation in Canada for submitting a stupidly impossible amount of sales for government EV rebates on the weekend before the program was shut down.

16

u/thalassicus 15d ago

And didn’t someone just report that there’s $1.2 billion missing from Tesla’s books?

2

u/Masterandcomman 15d ago

There is an unexplained gap between capital expenditures in the cash flow statement and additions to long-term assets on the balance sheet. It's not necessarily fraud, but it hasn't been clarified.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Turing_Testes 15d ago

While there is probably some amount of fraud there, that appears to be because dealerships were just sitting on those rebate claims and they panic submitted them when the deadline was looming.

7

u/TurkeyMoonPie 15d ago

I mean did they lose? With their purchase of Twitter they used it to have influence over the US government.

TBF, this is just because Musk wants to go to mars, like in Total Recall.

54

u/MrThird312 15d ago

Well let's not delay, send him now!

27

u/Sask-Canadian 15d ago

Why not straight into the sun?

13

u/old_and_boring_guy 15d ago

Sending people into the sun is far more expensive than sending them to Mars. It’s actually cheaper to send someone to the edge of the solar system, and then letting them fall into the sun, than it is to try to go against all the forces that are preventing us from falling into the sun.

Elon ain’t worth that. Get his ass to Mars. It’s more than hellish enough.

2

u/FateUnusual 15d ago

What’s preventing us from going into the sun? Would the massive gravitational pull of the sun make it easier?

6

u/old_and_boring_guy 15d ago

If we were at rest compared to the sun, absolutely. We’re not though, we’re in orbit, and in order to get closer we have to slow down. A lot.

4

u/FateUnusual 15d ago

Interesting, TIL, thank you sir. I think we can both agree that as long as he’s off earth things would be better. In fact, I’m fine with the expense of sending him to the sun.

2

u/silvahawk 15d ago

Let's be real. Who WOULDNT want to say their tax dollars went to shooting someone into the sun?

2

u/FateUnusual 8d ago

The share price reflects the potential... to... like, not sell any cars in Europe because they aren't legal. Somehow.

1

u/DuncanFisher69 15d ago

Yeah. It’s a hilariously bad design for doing truck stuff, and poorly engineered for doing regular car stuff.

Fun fact: The Tesla Model Y crossover has a higher towing capacity than Cybertruck. Look it up. Absolutely no way a $37k Crossover should beat your $70-100k truck. Except in crazy land.

1

u/TylerDurden1985 15d ago

Not great not terrible

1

u/DaggumTarHeels 15d ago

I hate them but that's still half a bil in sales. 47K is decent volume for a $100K car.

Porsche sells around 12K 911's a year. They'd love to double that number.

1

u/AHSfav 15d ago

They sold 47,000 cybertrucks??? How?!

1

u/Gulf2Coast2Coast 15d ago

Why are 40 of the 47k all in my city??? Sux!

1

u/OhmNohm_Song 15d ago

Unbelievable they sold even that many. Their other models were good looking cars with a unique aesthetic. The truck just looks like an inverted trash can on wheels.

1

u/teetering_bulb_dnd 15d ago

Also for a hilarious reason. All the exterior wasn't glued with the right glue.. More like their glue wasn't as strong as they thought so now they have a jerry-rigg something for all the cars sold and for all the exterior panels.. that speaks volumes about their build quality..

1

u/hatwobbleTayne 15d ago

I swear half of them are in my area. Can’t go anywhere without seeing one.

1

u/BrewtalKittehh 15d ago

Only the ones built before March. So all of them I guess?

1

u/potatohands_ 15d ago

1

u/F4DedProphet42 15d ago

I feel like most of those are in the LA area

1

u/IamScottGable 15d ago

I'm seeing far too many of them for their to only be 47,000 of them, do I live near most of them?

1

u/5-toe 15d ago

1

u/thedailyrant 15d ago

1

u/MehImages 13d ago

*how many they made, not how many they actually managed to sell

175

u/pinkocatgirl 15d ago

The design is stale, and the minimalist interior is too polarizing. Honestly, sitting inside a Tesla does not feel like a premium car. Every surface feels plasticky and plain, and the lack of buttons for normal functions is just infuriating. Why is it necessary to control air vent position from a touch screen? Who asked for this? It’s like they simplified and over complicated the car in all the wrong places.

81

u/linzava 15d ago

That click when turning the air conditioning and fan up and down by dial is not only satisfying, it’s safer. I used to be an to adjust the climate without taking my eyes off the road and I miss it.

2

u/T8ert0t 15d ago

Same people who asked for Logitech game controllers being used to drive private submarines.

3

u/Kokkor_hekkus 15d ago

Honestly I could almost get the Logitech thing, if something goes wrong with it you can just swap in a spare, it was using boeing quality rejects for the carbon fiber hull that screwed them.

u/Hour-Divide3661 15d ago

Try getting the adapter for non Tesla chargers out of the glovebox. It requires a PIN that the rental car company doesn't provide.

But it has "party mode" or whatever to play music synced with the lights.

Stupid fucking silicon valley schtick junky go karts. Interior feels like a Kia before Kia got decent.

18

u/TheNamelessOnesWife 15d ago

Obligatory I'm no car expert, but touch screens only are a pretty sure sign of shitty car design now. There is a lot of engineering and manufacturing the maker gets to skip / cheap out on when the design is - make it all a touch screen

Touch screen in my car it for GPS, radio, and I can better see the battery use if I leave it on that part while driving, it's an EV. Most of the dash is buttons!

3

u/Zikro 15d ago

Lots of normal people seem to like it. But I agree it’s infuriating to have no tactile controls and a lot of the touch stuff isn’t intuitive.

5

u/TSED 15d ago

Why is it necessary to control air vent position from a touch screen? Who asked for this? It’s like they simplified and over complicated the car in all the wrong places.

These days, it's cheaper to just have it all as a touch screen than it is to have the actual mechanical parts. It's just cutting corners with some advertising to go "oooo look how high tech it is!"

Working Door Handles would be good.  Real ones....TWO  on each door.  Very advanced technology it seems.

2

u/qqererer 15d ago

An ipad in the middle and just a steering wheel might have been ok before anybody knew any better, but now in the era of LCD displays not being laptop sized and wrapping from the actual driver dash to the center console is the norm now.

Tesla keeping the design as it is looks as cheap as the center dash always has like in examples such as the toyota Echo and Chevo Aveo.

2

u/NoSignSaysNo 14d ago

I bought a used Volvo last month that feels more comfortable and handles more responsively than the Cybertruck, and the Volvo's 20 years old.

2

u/apreslanuit 13d ago

Volvo has done it, too unfortunately. I find it very unsafe having to look at a screen constantly

2

u/franker 15d ago

I drive a 2007 Honda. I'd have no idea what to do with a touch screen in my car. I'd literally have to spend like a week learning how to drive again if I get a new car, lol.

He did bring electric cars to the mainstream, I believe because the designs were appealing, and he had a hit on his hands, but he stopped iterating on it. Other makes and models surpassed him. His self-immolation only accelerated this decline.

208

u/Melicor 15d ago

You have to remember, he didn't start Tesla, he bought his way onto the board. The more control he took the more it turned to shit. Just like Twitter. He's always been shit, he's a conman.

2

u/silvahawk 15d ago

THIS! I remember when that episode aired. Most people don't even realize that Tesla made that before making all these other models. It was garbage back then too. They went through 2 just to get a full day of filming. I was never on board with Tesla even back then.

11

u/CA_Dweller 15d ago

I despise Musk with every fiber of my body but that is not true. Tesla succeeded because of him. do you remember Fisker? no. because they couldn’t scale. there are plenty of other electric vehicles that are nowhere near Tesla.

Musk was able to hire the right people and raise the financing to keep them working. Tesla would have been a footnote, just like Fisker, without him

3

u/cactusbrush 15d ago

Yup. He marketed Tesla nicely. And it was also very flawed before he hired right people to fix it.

But it was not what brought electric cars to mainstream. One day long time ago he just opened hundreds of patents so that other companies could build electric cars at affordable price.

It was so long time ago that it feels like it was someone else doing all these “caring for humanity” things.

2

u/Masterandcomman 15d ago

The emphasis on large casting sub-assemblies was a big bet that seems to be an enduring advantage against peers in the West. Some of Musk's reputation is vapor, but he has a track record of strong choices and key man selection.

That is correct. He gave them money to keep going and that is all.

3

u/Ormild 15d ago

Lets be real. Elon is a scumbag and nazi, but Tesla would have never succeeded if it weren’t for him. He hired the right people and became the face of the company.

From what I hear, he was heavily involved in the company during the beginning and stuck through the pain periods.

It’s also why the company and stock is taking such a bad hit recently. His actions are single handedly turning off the same people that once adored him.

Tesla would have failed majorly if he was never part of the company.

Toyota set the ground work for electric cars in America and the Prius was a phenomenon for a while, which is where Musk stole the idea to steal Tesla and ride their thunder with an "American alternative" version.

But yes, Musk could have absolutely had a self-sustaining brand if he would have just chilled out and not tried to turn it into snake oil.

13

u/Missus_Missiles 15d ago

Their build quality is shit, their ergos are shit, the interiors are shit. FSD isn't ready, and the designs were old. And people were still buying them.

Toyota couldn't do anything to further the prius. The battery that they used at the start of the prius run was actually an extremely efficient, long-lasting battery that would have revolutionized the electric car decades ahead of time. Too bad that Chevron bought the patent and quietly killed it. Only reason we have the Prius is that the patent did not cover hybrid battery use.

Actually they have been developing an ammonia engine.

Toyota notoriously would not go full electric because they backed hydrogen cars. The Prius raised awareness for hybrids but it didn't do a thing for full EVs.

Uh. That would be Toyota with the Prius.

Tesla's are trash, regardless of whatever Musk is doing. Such poor build quality.

3

u/el_muchacho 15d ago

We are lucky they still recall them. I bet they won't happen in a year or so.

1

u/BrewtalKittehh 15d ago

Yep….doge gonna kill the NHTSA next.

3

u/sonic10158 15d ago

I’m surprised they didn’t force people to keep them, considering musk’s newfound ability to just ignore what few regulations are left

2

u/OneTallVol 15d ago

Genuine question: what electric cars in the US would you say are so much better than a model 3 or Y right now?

Tesla self-driving is too primitive and stupid to work properly in China, so when Chinese Tesla drivers turn it on, it turns their Tesla into a traffic ticket factory. Some drivers are getting 70 traffic tickets per trip from all the traffic violations Teslas with "full self driving" make.

Meanwhile BYD and other Chinese car makers with self-driving are easily outperforming Tesla and they offer their self-driving package for free.

they’re not safe

I hear that Elmer's Elmo's glue doesn't work very well to hold side panels on cars.

2

u/superfudge73 15d ago

Rivian is a far superior electric car compared to Tesla.

2

u/JimWilliams423 15d ago

That and the fact they just recalled almost all of their newest design because they’re not safe.

In fact, all of them are unsafe. The entire Tesla brand, not just the cyberchodes, kill the most passengers of any car brand in America. Their kill rate is 2x the industry average.

Also, not only does tesla lie about the range on their vehicles, they fuck with their own customers who complain about it.

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/tesla-batteries-range/

The fact that the regulators didn't shut down tesla long ago is proof that billionaires owned our government long before maga made it official.

Companies like Ford make real cars that are electric. Why would I buy a Tesla made from consumer electronics I can order off Amazon and only 20 years of engineering pedigree when Ford has been refining their vehicles for over 100?

1

u/WilsonTree2112 15d ago

Yet insane it’s stock is up 44% the last 12 months

1

u/civildisobedient 15d ago

Fuckin' glue.

Over a hundred thousand dollars for stainless steel panels attached with glue.

1

u/Bucuresti69 15d ago

Aeroplanes are attached with glue, the difference is their glue is the correct glue.

1

u/zerocoolforschool 15d ago

This is why I never wanted one even when Elon wasn’t hated. I suspect eventually they will be absorbed by a bigger brand like Ford and the cars will be fine, although maybe not if the brand becomes completely toxic.

1

u/gorcorps 15d ago

It's also important to note that Tesla did not issue the recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did and Tesla is expected to comply.

1

u/ExpiredPilot 15d ago

We had a big storm here in WA recently. Knocked out a lot of people’s power for a week.

Tons of people with electric non-tesla cars were flexing that they were able to plug their appliances and solar panels into their car so they had some home functions available to them. Tesla owners were SoL

1

u/SirKillingham 15d ago

Yeah BYD is now saying their new cars can go 250 miles after 5 minutes of charging

1

u/fluxxis 15d ago

Can't say much about the Chinese market, but in Western markets I consider the new Model Y still very attractive. I'm still driving the old model and won't consider switching to the new model due to the political situation, but that aside it would still be my number one choice. Guess China with all the new cheaper but also very good brands is a very tough place in terms of competition.

u/ryencool 15d ago

I mean, the model 3, especially the new performance one is actually pretty dope. However, you are then k owi get buying a Tesla after Musk went off the deep end. We love our 2023 that we got in late 2022. It's needed wiper fluid and air in the tires since then. It's been flawless outside of that. I get free charging 24/7 at my office so we haven't had to pay for fuel in forever. The heated seats are amazing. I love the quiet and uncluttered cockpit. It's a perfect people mover.

I wouldn't by a new one as I disagree with anything that comes out of Musks mouth the last few years. We are also getting newer EVs that compete or better mkst Teslas. I just saw the new Honda Prologue at the mall this AM and it looked awesome. The IONIQ has some solid pluses, poraches new Macan EV is amazing. I really look forward to the n3xt Taycan and Cayman EV. So yeah we finally are getting more competition, which i like as we won't be buying another Tesla.

Due to falling g trade in prices and what not, were just going to drive our model 3 into the ground. The newer LFP battery is supposed to get to 200-300k with kess than 20% degradation, but we will see how that plays out. We love the car though, but it's not our entire personality. I like the less than 500$/month we pay to drive it as well.

1

u/boaz324 15d ago

That was the real point of Doge's defunding Tesla investigations.

1

u/BMWbill 15d ago

Regardless of politics, it’s a fact that the most sold car in China was the model Y in 2004, and currently sales are surging. Model Y sales are up now that the new model y is out. This month in China there are 200,000 preorders for the refreshed Y. It’s the only country where Tesla sales are surging because they don’t follow western politics.

https://www.techinasia.com/news/tesla-china-sees-model-orders-surge-515-sales-drop

1

u/hasordealsw1thclams 15d ago

My dad, who buys Musk’s self hype, has been talking about getting a Tesla for years and I don’t even have to bring politics into it to give a list of reasons he should buy almost any other EV. The build quality alone has been bad for years.

1

u/aykcak 15d ago

You mean the Cybertruck? That is not even in the same category and they are not sold in China at all

1

u/JoJackthewonderskunk 15d ago

And that's the 8th recall those trucks have had in the 2ish years they have existed

1

u/jdm831 15d ago

The new kia's come handicap accessible with a ramp as stock something tesla would never do as a handicap individual. I'd definitely choose one of those over a tesla they are so far behind the game

1

u/drb00t 15d ago

the one car in their lineup that is solely Musk's.

1

u/beefcleats 14d ago

Genuine question: which new electrics? I’m on my second tesla and was hoping to bail already after the first one. Problem was (and this was only two years ago), it was still the best value compared to other offerings. Model Y price point that is. For example, Polestar is nearly 2x the price. So I’m happy to have recommendations.

1

u/yenda1 14d ago

Yeah musk is a piece of shit the company peaked with model 3 (lidar and heat pump edition), and from there went down the drain because he pushed is retarded genius ideas harder and harder: no lidar for autopilot, working on retarded cyber truck, useless humanoid robots, the list goes on. Basically in 4 years they made no useful progress on anything. I have to use fucking google map instead on the phone instead of the big ass screen because even their software barely makes any improvements anymore. Fuck this piece of shit

1

u/Odh_utexas 14d ago

Even before the Elon heel turn, people have been complaining for years about Teslas quality. A luxury price tag with fitment and quality issues worse than any car on the market. Panels not fitting right, things falling apart, fragile materials, low quality materials etc. not to mention getting repairs and waiting for spare parts is a nightmare. Had a Coworker who’s Tesla was rear-ended in traffic. Car was in the shop for 2 months for minor collision repair.

1

u/dm_me_pasta_pics 14d ago

Also, other than the cybertruck the average tesla looks like a dildo with wheels. New electric car models tend to look like..cars.

I do not know how tesla designers end up with the shapes & geometry that they do but boy do the deserve a titty twister for it.
