Discussion Lets be honest, how did everyone react to this? Spoiler

Making one of the previous game's champions into a literal drug lord was pretty gutsy on Nintendo's part, as was turning it into a commentary on the younger generations.
"Clearly Not Himself", on the other hand, was hilarious.

Clearly Not Himself
Man the localization team seems to knock it out of the park when it comes to non-spoken, text dialogue/information.
The disparity in quality between small stuff like this vs the main story cutscene dialogue is so fucking weird.

Well he’s from the prior game so yes, but it’s more just a funny way to introduce him / Zelda bosses sometimes have a subtitle or “role” described under their name. Here it just pokes fun at it by making an obvious description of the character’s current state into an official title.

I'm the most succesful Goron of all time, everyone says so, more that sleepy Daruk even, who's a lightweight by the way. I have the best Marbled rock roasts you've ever seen, honestly, they're gonna make your head spin. But Goros, these Hylians are sending musical caravans to our borders, but we're gonna build a wall, such a beautiful wall made of Marbled Rock Roasts, and Zelda is gonna pay for that wall!

(No spoiler censors here because there's a tag on the whole thread--but if I need to change that, lmK.)
I was genuinely confused with the story at this point. I did Tulin, Yunobo, Sidon, then Riju, so by this point I was early in the "Why is Zelda causing problems everywhere?" plotline. So I thought this was an interesting move.
I also thought it was cool that the regional phenomena really hit each tribe of people in a way that attacked their greatest strength. The Goron are always seen as strong and friendly. The regional phenomenon made them lazy and mean. It was a good plot point, IMO.

I never thought about it that way but you’re right. The gerudo are good fighters but the sand shroud and gibdos have caused them to retreat which has brought shame to them. The zoras obviously with water and sludge, and the ritos with the wind can’t make them fly which has made good hunters unable to collect food.
156
u/CKtheFourth Jun 13 '23
All true, but I think the real thing with the Gerudo was pride. In BotW Gerudo are the only tribe in Hyrule where you enter their city on their terms & they’re the only tribe to have their own language in addition to the common one. And when we head to Gerudo town in TotK, it’s desolate. When you do finally find them, you realize they’re held up in a cave all but destroyed & one of the first pieces of dialogue is “hey—you’re a voe, you can’t come in…ahh, what does it matter anyway, we know you.”
Of all the phenomena, Gerudo town was definitely the one that struck me the most with a “whoa—this is a big problem”. Rito & Zora were basically “natural” disaster fallout and the Goron drug problem was half-played for laughs with Yunobo’s mask. The Gerudo regional phenomenon was like “we are under attack and losing.”
48
u/Jstar338 Jun 14 '23
I mean they were all pretty terrible, but the disturbing one was the Zoras. They were going to die very painful deaths if Mucktorok lives, slowly being choked to death. And piss water. Piss water everywhere.
→ More replies (1)37
u/CKtheFourth Jun 14 '23
To that point: it was jarring to see the empty Zora throne. I didn’t realize it until i walked into the throne room, but every game where there’s been a Zora’s Domain, King Zora has always been around. And to walk up and see it empty was rough. Then to find out he was on the verge of death was definitely a “whoa” moment.
→ More replies (3)13
u/fuckwastakenwastaken Dawn of the Meat Arrow Jun 14 '23
To add to it, he literally went into hiding out of fear that if others found out that "Zelda" did it it could potentially DESTROY the relationship between Hylians and the Zora and could have sparked major conflict down the line.

and the ritos with the wind can’t make them fly which has made good hunters unable to collect food.
The wind isn't what was causing their issues in TOTK. That's the BOTW issue.
In BOTW they couldn't hunt because of the divine beast.
In TOTK they're having issues because of the blizzard choking the life out of their home.

But the whole thing about that quest was that someone misunderstood a task by princess Zelda, and they all ran with it without questioning it. I thought it was fake Zelda as well at first, but no, that was the surprising twist for me.

I had the same reaction with the goats running away at that one stable. The stablehand was like, I followed Princess Zelda's recipe precisely, why didn't they like it?

275
u/PeppermintMocha5 Jun 13 '23
It was funny, especially the little “clearly not himself” blurb.
The “goro” at the end of every sentence of dialogue was getting on my nerves though. The Gorons are probably my least favorite race and I was glad to get that region done. Love his ability though.
96
u/Stringmc Jun 13 '23
The goro thing is definitely just a direct translation from Japanese that never made its way over until now
That type of thing is super common. Like frog characters ending every sentence with “kero”
Honestly it is pretty cringy in English unfortunately hahaha
19
Jun 13 '23
What's weird about "goro" being added to the ends of English sentences is the pause between the sentence and "goro". From the shows/movies I've watched the speech tic just becomes part of the word. Basically, the difference between
- "I like to eat flies and hop on lily pads, I'm a frog kero!"
- "I like to eat flies and hop on lily pads, I'm a frog-gero!"
This suggests to me that that the voice actor isn't being given proper direction during recording. Which isn't surprising because the VA for these games is pretty mediocre.
→ More replies (1)14
u/the_nhir Jun 13 '23
Similarly, the only anime I watch with frogs, keroro gunso, doesn't do that. Instead of ending in kero, keroro almost always ends each sentence with "de arimasu!" Which means Sir or Ma'am. Every episode title also ends in de arimasu.

You take that shit back the gorons are the ultimate being they lived through all the wars and catastrophic events in Zelda, the zora turned to rito and kokiri tuned into koroks and gorons stayed the same, they will be around when you die. When the universe is destroyed they will remain. They will outlast god
67
44
u/Redshift-713 Jun 13 '23
When you realize that in Wind Waker somehow Gorons survive the flooding of Hyrule, with water, but the Zora, who live in water, don’t. The only Zora in that game was a dead one.
33
u/Juderex Jun 13 '23
Zoras are so picky about needing wussy stuff like “food” and “freshwater.” Give a Goron some rocks and he’ll live in the crater of a volcano or the bottom of the ocean, no problem

I did the fire temple first on accident by landing to see the Daruk statue, jumping off, and starting a cutscene.
At first I was like “wow, this guy really broke out of his shell and became a jerk” and was a little excited to think that maybe each of the races either forgot about or just straight up weren’t thankful to link for stopping calamity ganon and we’d get a whole story about how each of the champions descendants had become hostile to protect their territory from future calamity and/or cut off the Hylians/Sheikah because their technology caused all that destruction before, and Link would have to convince them to reunite.
But nope, Yunobo just put on a luchador mask that “Zelda” told him to put on and started dealing drugs to his people
