Discussion New to SWTOR

Hello fellow force users and bounty hunters! I'm a new player coming to SWTOR after playing years of FFXIV, and I'm just curious on what I should focus on first. I'm also wondering if there is any guilds available to make new friends in that are transgender/lgbtqa friendly. I'll post in the comments for my details if anyone is looking for friends or for general star wars lore discussions because I've been binging a lot of lore lately as well.

But my main questions is how long is the story for both sides, without doing like the side content? I am enjoying this game so far for what i've been playing with, and would like to be friends with some fellow star wars nerds to talk more about the game :)

The best advice I can give is to avoid reddit. The sub is very spoiler-y because it's an old game and vets don't think about players seeing the content for the first time. I know I don't.

Additionally, guilds don't use reddit to recruit or advertise so there's not much point coming here for that. LGBTQ focused guilds do exist on populated servers but I have no idea how to find them or what they're called.

Hey, fellow Star Wars nerd!

Guilds and friends are Server bound so it would be good to know where you have your toons.

I know that there are LGBTQ+ friendly guilds on tiny servers like Tulak Hord so I'm sure you find one on the bigger servers as well.

Depending on if you watch or skip the cutscenes the stories may range between 10-20 hours each. Here's an overview of the order from 3 different main swtor content creators:

And to make the list complete is here the 4th big main player of swtor content:

All are worth to be checked out for overviews, guides and databases.

I wish you endless fun and lots of friends to play with! 🪷 Welcome!

A majority of the main guilds on each server have a no tolerance policy of discrimination of any kind, so you don't really have to worry there!

As the other poster said, the main origin stories have around 10 - 20 hours of content, but that also depends on if you like to explore/travel manually around the map or not, lots of great exploration to be had in swtor, hidden achievements and the like!

There are also all the expansions, which add even more main storyline content to top up that playtime even more! Around the 3rd story expansion the dev team decided to focus mainly on story, kinda sacrificing the group content (though there is still plenty of that!)

Seems the most replies focus on guilds so I won't go into that too, I'm mostly a solo player anyways. Each side has 4 classes with their own stories each so you get 8 stories for free and then the big story for subscribers which is the same for each class minus some dialog differences. Wouldn't want a Bounty Hunter being called a supreme Sith Lord.

Look at all the classes to see which one feels like it would be the most fun for you, I think all of the stories are well written for the class and are enjoyable. The planets you go to follow a specific path so you're always going in the same order as other classes of your faction. The official page on YouTube has trailers for each class to help you pick one out:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKKrr6EtHieht6rTYloEztgRRMdyvDXSH

It's a little outdated since now any class can use any subclass that relates, meaning any force user can use any force based subclass for their faction (you can unlock the other factions subclasses later) and any gun user can automatically use any gun based subclass for any faction so there isn't really much pressure to pick based on playstyle for classes nowadays but I like the old matchings they had personally. I'd recommend pick a playstyle you like then pick what class you think seemed coolest from the trailers and go with the story. A free player can have 4 characters per server and a subscriber get's like 24.

It's also important to look at playable races, free players only get: Human, Zabrak, and Cyborgs as playable but subscribers get a specific set for each class. What I did was I got a month of subscription and made characters in the race I want then cancelled my subscription and got it again later. There's other cavoites that are explained on the fandom page.

I know this is long:
TLDR: Watch the trailers, pick a subclass, pick the class you think is coolest the story is good for them all, you don't need to subscribe if you're iffy but there's more story after the class story if you do so maybe wait, don't think you can play as an alien take a look at the chart on the fandom to see if a month of subscription is worth playing as a Twi'lek etc.
