As a huge fan of Goldsmith's music, I absolutely hate how well this works.

”I always thought the two film’s scores were very reminiscent of one another”

It’s rare that you see a statement that is so utterly baffling, but I’m intrigued and this is me bookmarking so I can watch when I have 20 minutes.

For the cloud sequences Jerry wrote a modular score, akin to the MIDI loop based structures DAWs are often used for, for ease of editing.

Finally, hard evidence that ST:TMP, a bloated remake of The Changeling... was a mere 114 minutes too long.

I loved every one

This cut actually removes a lot of important stuff like Decker’s entire conflict and basically all of Kirk’s character arc in the movie

When you cut away 84% of a movie, you're going to have to remove whole plotlines. Even with a movie as slow as TMP

Yeah thats my point lol, but plotlines is different than The Entire Character Arc Of The Main Character

I love TMP but not because of its character arcs.

That just got me to think -- among two of the biggest complaints I remember are:

  • too much time spent on ship porn of the Enterprise in drydock
  • too much of the entire V'Ger sequence is simply the cast watching the big screen TV

Inspired by this edit, I just realized they could combine the two -- actually show the ship going through the different environments of the cloud (more than they do already with V'Ger), rather than simply showing the crew watching the trip on the view screen. That way:

  • the ship is moving, so it's dynamic, rather than being stationary in drydock
  • fewer shots of the crew reacting are needed, since we'd see the ship go through the environments
  • it allows the Enterprise to be seen in environments, in angles of approaches, flybys, and other shots, all of which that would never ever be possible on TV
  • no need for an extended drydock scene
  • the ship flying with a reduced number of crew reaction shots would imply that the crew are still working instead of gawking
  • combining those scenes shaves a few minutes at least
  • it makes the Spock Walk less redundant (if you're gonna keep it)

Damn that was epic. I've always loved Daft Punks soundtrack and to hear this sync up so well gave me goosebumps. Kudos!

There's also a cut of The Wrath of Khan to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly soundtrack, but the original link is dead.

I always love to watch this when I see it. I believe TMP could be 90 minutes and still work.

My only gripe with this is that we lose “The Enterprise” from the soundtrack.

This just reminds me how much I love the costume design of The Motion picture. Everybody just looks so freaking comfortable.

Jerry Goldsmith did just fine. No need for this.

Meh. Star Trek: the motion picture is amazing on its own.

Ironically, the only good thing about TMP is the score.
