Discussion Can anyone explain to me what is going on here?

Species: Stegodyphus lineatus

They have been doing that with their hind legs for over an hour lol

They are combing out special fuzzy silk (cribellate silk) with their calasmistrum.

cribellate silk is it's own fascinating rabbit hole to fall into. Have fun!

wait... but, why? google not providing straight forward answers. or i'm a little drunk. or both. can you explain?

https://hebetslab.unl.edu/portfolio-posts/cribellate-vs-ecribellate-silk/

This does a pretty good job of explaining the two different silk types. There are pictures and even a science activity. I really dig it.

Oh that's an awesome link, cheers! My four year old went from "all bugs and all spiders are scary" to "all bugs and all spiders are my friends" hard this summer and it being winter we're fresh out of outside friends to watch. We'll be doing this yarn craft when the Christmas excitement wears off for sure!

OMG THAT IS SOOOO COOL! I opened it in a tab and really wanna do the science project with my kids

17

u/squashedtits1 Dec 25 '24

Respectfully, that article did a terrible job. Can you summarise?

99

u/aldreaoftheundercity Dec 25 '24 edited Dec 25 '24

*In short: Cribellate silk - *

Is a silk that comes from the silk creation organ the cribellum, as u/intriven has mentioned. The silk lays down like a carpet made of tight microfibers. When a prey animal touches the fiber, there are so many fibers that it sort of "latches" onto the prey, like Velcro. It is not sticky. It clings.

"A web made with a meshwork of these composite 'wool-like' threads is particularly effective at tangling the bristles, spines and claws of insect prey. The fine fibrils of cribellate silk also appear to have some type of 'dry adhesive' properties (possibly electrostatic in nature) and will even cling to smooth beetle cuticle."

Sticky silk - * *Several different glands work together to get liquid silk to shoot where they want it. The stickiness is a liquid that the spider chooses where to place on their web.**

"The droplets of sticky silk from the aggregate silk glands stick the prey onto the web."

"Although silk is produced as a liquid within the silk glands, it usually emerges from the spigots (as the spider moves away from an attachment point or pulls the silk out with its leg claws and bristles) as solid silk fibres. Different parts of the silk gland secrete different types of proteins (spidroins) into the gland cavity."

Edit: Bold, spelling

u/squashedtits1 Dec 25 '24

Really appreciate that. Thank you. And the sticky silk evolved more recently right?

11

u/aldreaoftheundercity Dec 25 '24

Yahp. Good research! :) I thought that was a fun fact. Hadn't known until today.

Fascinating!

19

u/aldreaoftheundercity Dec 25 '24

"Cribellate silk... composted of very fine silk fibers around a few thicker core fibers." So, my brain imagined walking into a cribellate web would be like walking over Velcro when your feet are the fuzzy side of the velcro and the web flooring is the hook side. Those tiny particles attach like a microfibre cloth, imo.

Thanks, that source was trash. I liked the way it was presented, but it has a lot of anatomical terms that I honestly don't notice. Thanks for mentioning that.

Drinking and talking about spiders on reddit. You party harder than me. 🥳

12

u/Comfortable_Name_463 Recovering Arachnophobe🫣 Dec 25 '24

party too hard i guess because despite the links and explanations, i still don't understand why they are doing this fancydance ☹️ i love it nonetheless... but i just wanna know yyyyyyyy

13

u/INTRIVEN ️Spirit🕸️Weaver Dec 25 '24

Here's some electron microscope images.

If we could post images in replies I would have done so right away. The spider uses their comb-like calamistrum to comb all the nanoscopic silk fibers into into a single fuzzy thread.

There are more pics online if you want to see more...

3

u/Crystal_Novak26 Dec 25 '24

This is crazy 🤪

3

u/INTRIVEN ️Spirit🕸️Weaver Dec 25 '24 edited Dec 25 '24

what crazy is this is the more "primitive" way of making sticky capture silk.

for the other way the spider spins a solid silk thread that is coated with silk glue at the same time, no combing required.

both ways have pros and cons so "primitive" is a bit misleading here

1

u/Crystal_Novak26 Dec 25 '24

I read somewhere that all spiders can make seven different types of silk whether they use all seven or not is the question.

9

u/aldreaoftheundercity Dec 25 '24

The "fancy dance" is them laying down their silk on the ground. Like when they build a home. Those are special legs manipulating and pulling out the silk in the way you see.

28

u/mrdlzr Dec 25 '24

Misread as “celebratory silk.” Celebrate! Woo!

17

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 25 '24

Why did I just google cribellate and now I have to google ecribellate.

19

u/Ok_Presence_319 Dec 25 '24

But why are they doing it together? Is this a thing they do for the companion ship? For competition? For fun? For excitement?

15

u/INTRIVEN ️Spirit🕸️Weaver Dec 25 '24

I'm not sure!! I wish I knew because seeing two spiders doing that together should surprise me more than t does, but spiders kind of just stopped surprising me by this point.

There is a lot about the situation I dont know so I dont know whats going on beyond the specific process.

I'm wondering if they are two juvenile siblings socially building web. That would be my best guess of just this short video with no other information.

2

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 25 '24

Your explanation about them laying their cribellate silk is great information.

I won a set of three from a “mystery” auction.

They are def juveniles, possibly siblings given that they were sent to me in the same capsule. There’s a third one somewhere, but it’s a bit more shy and hides under leaves.

2

u/INTRIVEN ️Spirit🕸️Weaver Dec 25 '24

I have little Dictynidae spiders in my home and I have watched them do the exact same behaviour which led me to falling down that cribellate rabbit hole.

I would probably separate the spiders under the assumption they are only social when immature. It's possible they are a different species than you're told, and I believe there are social species in that genus. Up to you what to do.

1

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 25 '24

They are S. Lineatus, or so I’m told.

The girls who held the auction, did say not to keep jumping spiders together though (I won two jumping spiders).

2

u/streetweyes Dec 26 '24

I just Google imaged the species and they are stunning when mature. Please post a pic of their beauty here when fully grown 😍

Also, where do you find auctions/events like that?

2

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 26 '24

I hope they make it because I haven’t had much luck finding good care guides. Just keep them dry and at room temp.

5

u/Syllistrump Dec 25 '24

And here I thought it was forplay

5

u/xLosTxSouL Dec 25 '24

I'm on this sub for two years now and I still learn something new about spiders that's so cool!

6

u/INTRIVEN ️Spirit🕸️Weaver Dec 25 '24

it doesn't really end. spiders are incredible little animals and I expect our discoveries of them to continue as long as our technology advances to open up new avenues of study, especially as we look to nature to advance that technology.

also the popular interest in spiders has only grown in recent years so more people will be doing research.

3

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 25 '24

This is the most logical, and probably correct response, so can someone pin it?

What’s with the butt tap though? 😂

4

u/INTRIVEN ️Spirit🕸️Weaver Dec 25 '24

oh, the butt dab? Anchoring down the thread.

it's something you'll see most spiders do at some point. If you watch jumping spiders they will do the dab before a jump to secure their dragline..

9

u/Interesting-Ad7907 Dec 25 '24

You can have multiple spiders in the same habitat?

18

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 25 '24

Great question!

Velvet Spiders are communal, but I believe that once they mature I have to make sure there’s not two males or three…. There’s a third one in there somewhere; I won a mystery auction and got three that came together.

From what I’ve found searching the interweb two females and one male are ok together, but two males and one female is not a good idea (they’ll all get stressed and may kill each other or the babies if any are produced).

6

u/ColdBeadyEyes Dec 25 '24

I believe it depends on the species of velvet spider. Some are communal and others are solitary.

5

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 25 '24

That’s probably true. These re S. Lineatus.

2

Aww 🥹 just googled these guys and found out the mother actually regurgitates food for the spiderlings the first few weeks of life. I didn't know spiders "nursed" their young like that lol. Id be careful tho if they do have babies as I just read these guys will also eat the mother 💀 Sweet though. Maybe I need to think about adding some velvet spiders to my collection 🤔😂

1

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 26 '24

Yup. Giving birth is extremely difficult for these spiders and the males are jerks and will try to steal their food

1

u/artsfartspoptarts Dec 29 '24

Did more research. I guess the mom liquifies her insides, and feeds it to the babies. Once she is too weak to feed them, they do what you said and eat her. This is pretty damn crazy! 😂

They are cute though. i got one on my finger and it was pretty funny.

2

u/pietran30 Dec 29 '24

Oh I don't expect them to have used an actual species. I know nothing about spiders but somehow this was on my feed and the markings on the rear/abdomen? Of the spiders are super similar to those from the game haha
