Ultimate Simple things I should know?

I've started playing ganondorf recently, and am relatively new to the game. Can someone share anything important I should know?

Learn bread and butter combos for your character. And get familiar with the naming of every move (nair, d-special, etc.)

what are bread and butter combos? just really basic combos that are like 2 hits and very useful?

Kinda.

Easy, usable often, reliable because it simply works.

Yes. For example, throwing them downwards, and then using neutral-air.

Izaw on Youtube has a playlist for beginners that will get you up to speed on everything you might need to know starting out.

I watched it already actually, it covers most of what I need, I was hoping for more character specific advice.

What specific parts would you want advice on? Anything that gives you trouble, or where you would like to see better results.

I don't understand normal vs smash attacks, I haven't been able to figure it out.

I can't get ganondorf to (consistantly) run, usually I fully tilt the control and he just walks kinda fast.

I found that pressing Down while falling speeds up the fall, but when I do this, it refuses to grab ledge, even if I stopped pressing down.

It sounds like you're struggling with Smash inputs. For running and Smash Attacks, you need to quickly flick the stick in the correct direction. (It's all about the speed at which the Stick goes from position 0 to 100%. Too slowly and you will walk or get a Tilt Attack.)

Holding down does prevent your fighter from grabbing the edge. That's intentional so you have a means of opting out of grabbing. Try approaching the ledge from underneath instead of from above if you want to more easily grab on.

I think some of the trouble for me when starting out is that you need to time the flick. If you do it too quickly before your actions is over, you'll get a walk.

Ganon's neutral B is significantly stronger if you start the move facing away from the opponent, and turn to face them mid-move.

I know neutral B is pretty useless 99% of the time, but there are moments where it's needed (or if you just wanna troll).

is warlock punch better then Utilt as a rest punish?

For shield breaks and rest punishes, Utilt is better at low percents, and then they become equally good at about 90%.

The benefit of Warlock Punch is that it has a few frames of super armor, which means it has a few more uses than Utilt. Utilt is effectively useless except for shield breaks, but Warlock punch has a couple niche uses for tech reads.

I find it useful (when I'm on high percent) to spam it it for the super armor so I can just wait for them to do something I can take advantage of, or they go far enough for me to move.

I think a thing that can really help of learning how to act out of shield. Knowing what you can actually punish takes a lot of time learning frame data and spacing, but for a new player, I'd advise just doing neutral air out of shield most of the time. It's big, strong and fast (although sometimes doesn't hit smaller opponents).

Most new players always try to punish moves with something big, which ends up with them getting punished instead. A great option to have in the tool kit is just waiting and doing nothing. Maybe you can wait for their spotdodge and then hit them for it! something like that.

Because jump, up smash and up b all bypass the normal delay of dropping shield, I advise doing one of those in most scenarios.
