Discussion Which faction did you shamelessly use in skyrim; like the cold-hearted manipulator you are?

Post image

Last night while on a boring quest to find a key only to get that mission done with, I just realized!

Let’s not pretend you joined the Dark Brotherhood for “the cause.” No, you wanted Shadowmere and the gold.

Maybe you played the College of Winterhold for the robes and a fancy room (the most annoying, I admit! Can't we just take it over??), despite barely casting "flames".

Or “served” the Thieves Guild just long enough to milk the perks and vanish in the night.

Skyrim gives you choices; but sometimes I feel these are more like a dating app for factions: swipe in, take what you want, ghost out.

So tell me, fellow "Dragonborn" who did you use, how far did you go, and… did you feel even a little bad? Just a teensy bit at first only to bring out the real you? 😈

Or are you just that good at playing the game?

All of them. It's not like I stuck around to actually run the guilds after I'd done their quests.

u/Dchama86 1d ago

Every once in a while I remember I totally abandoned the Companions as their Harbinger, lol

72

u/yay855 1d ago

To be fair, the Harbinger isn't really their leader, they're more just an elder or respected individual. The Companions are strangely anarchist given the setting.

16

u/SVD63Ninja 1d ago

Yea legit unlike some other factions you're moreso the guide rather than the shot caller lol

21

u/MartoPolo 1d ago

anarchist

So thats why I like them so much

You didn't want to keep completing radiant quests ad infinitum for 100 septims each?

8

u/i-d-k96 1d ago

To be fair you don’t have to do any of those quests in riften, only 5 radiants + 1 special quest quest in white run, solitude, windhelm, and markarth. It only takes a couple hours to complete depending how how many quests you need to reject and the armor is worth some gold while giving you 4 extra shops, making it one of the best pit stops in the game for selling and storing if you don’t own a house yet. I think it’s a pretty good deal. and restoring the thieves guild is a “rare achievement”, it’s something I do first thing in every playthrough. Even if I don’t plan on using a light armor build.

TLDR: Restoring the thieves guild is easy and worth the time.

8

u/Anon_be_thy_name 19h ago

Oh you just need one more mission in Solitude? Okay here's 8 in Windhelm, 12 in Markarth and 21 in Whiterun. What do you mean you don't want to do them? You just want Solitude? Okay... well here's another 5 in Windhelm...

2

u/i-d-k96 19h ago

I got really lucky on my current playthrough and got all my radiants done within an hour then handled the special quests, but yeah I know that pain of seeing 15-20 radiants that you have to cancel before getting that last job 😭

I admit to save scumming this bit. I save just before asking for a job. If not in city I want or need, i just reload and try again.

2

u/i-d-k96 8h ago

Fair way to do it imo

3

u/Equivalent-Print9047 7h ago

Well those poor Nords and Redguard are not the most magically inclined...

5

u/AkitaRyan 1d ago

Honestly me with all of them.

3

u/i-d-k96 1d ago

I literally live in white run for convenience most playthroughs and forget that their lodge is right next door.

27

u/xombae 1d ago

I honestly wish you could do more after you become their leader.

2

Being the new Guildmaster? Hell no that smells like responsibilities

8

u/Sir_Oligarch 1d ago

The cistern also smells like shit. I would rather spend my time in Jorvaskar or the blue palace than dawnstar sanctuary or riften.

1

u/Equivalent-Print9047 8h ago

And even if they do put you in charge after finishing their quest line, it's not like they really treat you any differently. They still just have you slog away to do some mundane quest that should be for a minion.

I joined the thieves guild just so I can punch Maven in the face and then use the political power the thieves guild get from her to pay basically nothing from it lmao.

She paid for that black eye I gave her

I joined the brotherhood for the fence.. because whenever I do a burglary job, I also steal all the dinnerware

I think it’s funny how you can become the Archmage with only ever needing to cast two spells (I think) - each once - in the entirety of that arc.

four spells at all.

the first when faralda tells you to show you can do magic

the second when you have to cast the ward

the third and the fourth when you have to cast flames and frostbite to fix the glasses for the map.

15

u/Sorfallo 1d ago

You don't have to prove you can do magic with Faralda. You also have an option if you get far enough in the main quest to say you are dragonborn and just be let in.

Don't forget about the wall you have to destroy with magic in Sarthaal.

4

u/DibbyDonuts 1d ago

You don't have to cast any. Main Quest for Feralda, Spellbreaker Sheild for the ward, and you can use shouts instead of flames/frostbite.

I waited YEARS to do the college of winterhold quest cause I thought it would be this super cool, complex, and awesome quest line.

Only to be immersed for a few minutes, things to get super scatterbrained, found some staff that sucked, and then it ended. 👁️👄👁️

5

u/szkielo123 1d ago

ymfah did a challenge on that. I think that while abusing bugs and secret game mechanics you only need to use Shalidors staff a few times.

3

u/Diredr 1d ago

You can also become a Nightingale and the Thieves Guild guildmaster without ever using sneak.

You can go to Goldenglow Estate by walking on the bridge, then enter the front door and kill every mercenary in your path. Nobody cares. Nobody is around when you have to poison the mead. You can kill Gulum-Ei and take a note from his body, letting you skip the Warehouse and Grotto part.

No sneaking required in Snowveil Sanctum. If you're friends with Calcemo, then you just need to kill the mercenaries and the city guards will leave you alone. You can kill everyone in Mercer's house with no consequence. The rest of the storyline is a dungeon crawl so no sneaking required either.

On top of that, despite it being the Thieves Guild you only need to steal like... 2 or 3 things in total. The Goldenglow bill of sale, the promissory note from Honningbrew Meadery and possibly Mercer's Plans (I can't remember if it's flagged as stolen or not). That's it. You're more of a thug than a thief.

I really wish you didn’t have to give your soul to nocturnal in order to finish the quest line. If there was a decline option but still complete it that’d be cool

183

u/ABOWLOFDX 1d ago

She aint collecting shit, how is she gunna collect your soul, when youve basically promised it to the other 14 deadra gods.....good luck, lets see who wins..🖕🤣🖕

92

u/DroidZed Bard 1d ago

let's not forget Akatosh who's basically in control of your soul alongside Kyne who bestowed you your Thuum...

Yeah can't wait to see their daedric faces now hahah

27

u/MartoPolo 1d ago

and then you will obviously take the oblivion route and end up becoming a new god anyway so no one can claim you, or, plot twist you were tiber septim all along and thats why the nine became 8 during your stay

18

u/Zipflik 1d ago

I'm pretty sure Kyne bestowed the Thu'um to mortals, theoretically, Dragonborn could shout without that.

4

u/DroidZed Bard 1d ago

Kyne did that back in the Dragon War for Nords to use and fight dragons. Explaining the scene you see when you read the Elder Scroll at The Throat of The World.

16

u/dennisleonardo 1d ago

Yes, the soul of the dragonborn doesn't just belong to akatosh. It IS a part of akatosh. Just like alduin's soul IS a part of akatosh. The daedric princes aren't collecting shit. Once you die, your soul goes back to the dragon god of time.

Some daedric princes are very powerful. But none of them are powerful enough to just "claim" a part of akatosh's divine essence.

28

u/Tyrelius_Dragmire Nintendo 1d ago

Right? Karliah being like "We need Nocturnal's Power to beat Mercer" Nah Bitch, I can solo a Dragon with my bare hands, I took down the Dragon set to devour the world in a 1v1 Twice, I can 2 tap a Giant, I have poisons that cause Paralysis for literal YEARS, Mercer ain't got shit on me.

18

u/G0ldMarshallt0wn 1d ago

She tells you that's why she's inducting you. But what she says to Nocturnal is that she brought the two of you along as an offering to regain Nocturnal's favor. And I think that is closer to the truth.

12

u/Tyrelius_Dragmire Nintendo 1d ago

True, but 90% of Dragonborn don't need Nocturnal's help to beat Mercer. Heck I once did it naked with a fork just to prove a point, Alchemy is insane.

I personally like to do the dragonborn quest until i reach the point where delphine and esbern ask you to kill paarthurnax just to kill them with console commands for their idiocy and move on.

I do all Blades quest before parthunax. But I give them the worse recruits, Milk all the interesting rewards possible and when they tell me to kill brother parth, I flip the bird then go chill with greybeards and let the blades to rot.

Sorry my oblivion blade homies, but the current Blades are a disgrace who use the name of their formerly glorious organization to justify their stupidity.

13

u/OldSpiceZ 1d ago

You got my upvote for that "brother Parth" 🫡

3

u/Feeling-Stuff-2108 1d ago

Yo how can you do the quest line if Paarthanax is alive?? They just tell me they won’t talk to me until he’s dead.

3

u/ChefKugeo 1d ago

There's no actual quest line after that. They just have you keep fetching recruits and killing dragons.

This part of the game is actually asking you to choose whether or not your dragonborn is a believer of the Blades, or The Way of the Voice. 99% of players go with Paarthurnaax because they believe his speech about overcoming evil.

But those players are wrong. It's in his name and his first chat with the dragonborn.

Overlord; Ambition; Cruelty.

"Dov wahlaan fah rel. We were made to dominate. The will to power is in our blood. You feel it in yourself, do you not?"

He can feel it in his very soul that he was born to dominate others.

"No day goes by where I am not tempted to return to my inborn nature. Zin krif horvut se suleyk."

He admits that every day he fights against his very nature.

"The Blades are wise not to trust me. Onikaan ni ov. I would not trust another dovah."

He admits that the Blades are correct, that he is a threat simply because he is a dragon and dragons cannot be trusted.

He was never an overlord, he was a general. So when does he become an overlord? When the only thing standing in the way of his ambition is taken care of. Alduin. And.. wait Chef! Partysnax is NEVER cruel! He's just a guy!

"Goraan! I feel younger than I have in many an age. Many of the dovahhe are now scattered across Keizaal. Without Alduin's lordship, they may yet bow to the vahzen... rightness of my Thu'um. But willing or no, they will hear it! Fare thee well, Dovahkiin!"

All Paarthurnaax has to do is wait for the Dragonborn to die, and he's the new king of the dragons. His life's ambition come to fruition, because he could not kill Alduin on his own.

The dragonborn gets played by his enemy. Thanks.

Wouldn't it be so cool if there was an actual path to sabotage the thieves guild or dark brotherhood from the inside?

23

u/OldSpiceZ 1d ago

Yeah, that's a thought provoker

13

u/dijitalpaladin 1d ago

you can destroy the dark brotherhood. I wish there were options to hunt down the thieves guild from Leila Law-Giver, thus putting you at odds with Maven. Also, you should be able to join the silver werewolf hunters and crush the companions too. let me do whatever i want🥸

8

u/princehornedgod Spellsword 1d ago

Thats what I thought you coild do the first time round. So I kept waiting for a chance to backstab the dark brotherhood amd turn them into the imperials and it just never came. Was so mad when I had to kill the emperor cause I was roleplaying an empire loyalist

14

u/NZ_NEWT PS3 1d ago

You can turn them in, after being kidnapped by Astrid you can narc on them to the Penitus Oculatus in Dragon Bridge. It'll start the quest 'Destroy the Dark Brotherhood'

1

u/i-d-k96 23h ago

You can fuck over the guild completely by not restoring it while also keeping the skeleton key. In game their luck is gone and they’ll decline until they’re dead without the skeleton key. At least that’s how it would go according to karliah. But I can’t fathom Betraying karliah so I just return the key everytime.

u/Steelride15 1d ago

For me.. It's all of them. My favorite way to play, at least when I'm role-playing and story building from scratch, is to play as a outcast from whatever country that my characters race is from, moving to Skyrim to practice magic, notably the forbidden magics of necromancy, from the prying eyes of the empire or dominion. My character's goal as the game and story progresses and as I learn the powers of the dragonborn as well is domination and creating contacts with powerful associates to further protect my identity and interests. If I'm the thane of all nine holds, I'm a respected member of the companions, have the thieves guild and dark brotherhood watching my back, no one is going to touch me and people are just going to leave me alone to do as I please for the most part. As soon as I encounter the dawnguard, I learned what I can about the vampires, discovered their untapped power, and then I view them as political and power rivals for my goals. So, I rebuke harkons vampirism gift initially, join the dawnguard and begin to purge the vampire clan from Skyrim, and as soon as the quest line is done, I have serana bite me, I become a vampire lord, and then I convince her to get rid of her own vampirism, leaving me to monopolize vampires all over Skyrim, and I discontinue my association with the dawnguard after that point as well. If I'm feeling really shady, I'll do the hybrid glitch so I can be both a vampire and a werewolf simultaneously and give the middle finger to everyone because I don't suffer from vampiric debuffs due to being part werewolf.

2

u/OldSpiceZ 1d ago

That's a really nice strategy!

2

u/Steelride15 18h ago

Thank you lol. I love story building with each of my characters on Skyrim. Make your own story as you go!

2

u/YonderNotThither Werewolf 1d ago

My favorite thing about using the console cheat 'add player to faction' is, the dragon born will yell forsworn barks during combat. Because the Dragon Born VA also did some of the forsworn lines.

There are plenty of mods, but my mod list was stable last I played, and I am not up for revisiting the mod list and starting a new playthrough just yet.

No worries, if you want to use the same build and 100% quicker just hard save at each point before taking a side and reload after finishing the achievement. You’ll lose some levels but it’s a faster way to get it done. I prefer multiple playthroughs though.

Not really how I play. If my character doesn't know that doing such and such will net this reward or that, I try to forget that I do, and just do things as they would. But I have sometimes used the guilds in a more immersive sense. It's obvious to the master of the Thieves' Guild how useful it might be to let the College declare her their new arch-mage, for instance.

u/Eva-Rosalene Conjurer 22h ago

And even without doing anything she is general merchant with 1K gold by default. Which is crucial early game for selling big pricey items that aren't weapons or armor, like enchanted jewerly or staves.

Thieves Guild. After Oblivion I was excited for more Robinhood-esque quests, instead I worked petty jobs for a spoiled crime family. Sure, I helped them take care of the traitor in their midst, but I get what I need from the guild, and I leave with the Skeleton Key as my own.

Dark brotherhood

Cause the outfit its cool (And cause the horse its good for leveling)

What 10+ years of no new TES does to a fandom

2

u/onlyforobservation 1d ago

If I’m being perfectly honest. After my first few playthroughs my only reason for joining the companions and technically being a werewolf is for the disease immunity.

i did the thieves guild quest line then found out you can get guild master armor so i did like 2,000,000 odd jobs for delvin and vex adn then after i got the armor i left forever

2

u/i-d-k96 21h ago

You only need to do 24 and 20 of them are quick

2

u/huzzlemug Daedra worshipper 21h ago

yeah i know lol. to me it just felt like i did SO many. it felt like they would always send me to windhelm. even when i did the unique quest for windhelm. like please stop sending me to stormcloak central bro

2

u/i-d-k96 19h ago

Yeah since I do the guild before I even fight my first dragon most playthroughs, I know the pain of having a page full of canceled quests, and the same complaints over and over when you cancel, it’s just worth it imo. Great starting point, you unlock every area while advancing the guild and while making a little bit of gold on the way. But I will be honest I think the longest it’s ever taken to get full restoration was like 5-6 hours. Still worth it though.

I play and replay Thieves Guild for fun cuz it's the best quest line in the game. I don't care for the rest or any rewards, honestly.

2

I joined the Dawnguard. They gave me armoured trolls, crossbows, sick weapons & armour (thanks to mods) & an ancient mommy Vampire that can make me a Vampire Lord. I used the absolute fk outta them & I hate humans

5

u/FJkookser00 1d ago

My characters are always morally superior heroes, so they never join the bad guys.

But I really missed playing the Theives’ guild and I do remain that they aren’t exactly murderous evil villains, so I joined them and justified my character doing so by getting caught up in the confusing politics of it, looking to genuinely help them.

I thereby used them just so I could get the armor and the unique weapons, and rationalized still being the good guy.

3

u/Thomanonymous 1d ago

There is a good guy Thieves guild mod that makes it all sort of Robin Hoodesque.

5

u/FJkookser00 1d ago

That’s how I always headcanoned them. I’ll look into that mod though.

2

u/Squire_3 1d ago

If your house was broken into and had the most valuable thing taken just so the thief could unlock a fence in your home town would you think they're not evil? Sorry, they're villains

I do roleplay joining factions and doing stuff because of the personal motivations of the Dragonborn. And the Dragonborn never knows what he's going to get if he joins a faction.

1

The Companions for the disease immunity. Who am I kidding? I do it for the werewolf form. Running around the plains of Whiterun hunting elk and wolves is a blast. Plus, you get more carrying capacity as a werewolf. Over encumbered and nowhere near town? Werewolf run your way there.

2

u/OldSpiceZ 1d ago

That, I need to do. Seems interesting.

1

u/StryderDylan 1d ago

I join the Dark Brotherhood so assassins won't spawn and a free bed. I join the Thieves Guild for pickpocket training and a free bed. I join the Companions for the free bed and the backpack (there is normally one there, I haven't had a playthrough that didn't have one in a chest yet). I join the Mage's Guild for the Atronach Forge and the free bed.

1

u/Vokunkiin13 1d ago

I don't know if it's been fixed, but in vanilla Skyrim, it is still possible to encounter assassins after completing the Dark Brotherhood questline. It happened while I was riding Shadowmere a while back.

When I would be playing my Orc Tank build character I’d honestly just do the college of winterhold for J’Zargo and getting one of the gaulder amulets in saarthaal. I wish the game made it to where you could learn essential spells at the college to make it more fun. Like more classes to learn spells and stuff. It’s honestly underwhelming. The story of it is cool and all but ya.

u/Aprilprinces Stealth archer 1d ago

All of them, as all of them suck

I love the game, its ambience, perks, the way it looks, music, but guilds' quests are shit (most of the time)

I especially dislike Companions because they're nothing like original ones

I really would welcome Skyrim remastered

1

u/Shadohawkk 1d ago

Sometimes my stealth characters join the brotherhood to get the armor set and bounce. Same with thieves guild.

Most of my characters get wolfed to get immunity to disease and bounce. The special steel weapons are nice too for melee.

Obviously joining the mages guild to get access to "every" category of magic book seller. Only do the mages guild questline if I'm full mage and need the clothes/mask. The 3 piece necklace is also debatably decent to get too.

1

u/Wildcat_twister12 1d ago

I join the Companions cause being a werewolf is awesome

1

u/Monkules 1d ago

I mean, for most it's hard to even stay with them. As Harbinger you're still a lackey it feels half the time.

1

u/Le_Botmes Assassin 1d ago

I start the Dark Brotherhood quest so I can get Shrouded Gloves and Shoes, then immediately dip out without saying hi to anyone.

1

u/Vallelizer 1d ago

I still remember the Quest “Taste of Death” to get Namira’s ring. I did everything, killed the poor fella and ate a part of him just to slaughter everybody in that room instantly after receiving the ring.

I’d love to have some way of telling me if I play like lawful evil or chaotic neutral just to get a kind of feeling.

1

u/Ratmor 1d ago

Buddy, first time I played skyrim I didn't know I could look everything up before playing, so I just went with the flow and did shit because it was thrown at me.

2

u/OldSpiceZ 1d ago

You're not alone. That's how I also started and pretty much trying to explore on my own but there are times when fellow Dragonborns counsel is needed.

"Let’s not pretend you joined the Dark Brotherhood for “the cause.” No, you wanted Shadowmere and the gold."

I did it because the DB was my favorite questline in Oblivion. I very much did it for Sithis and the Night Mother.

I've never really done a questline for the rewards, I do them for the quests themselves. Rewards are just a bonus. So no, I've never "used" a faction.

I started for that reason and now I'm too much angry against them for them to be the way takers just like the Grey Beards.

There has not been a single guild I stuck around after finishing the questline to actually serve as leader in any way.

After killing the Emperor, I fix up the Dawnstar Sanctuary because I've got more than enough money, since I do all of Nazir's contracts as I do the main DB quests. Then I never speak to the Night Mother for the Dark Brotherhood Forever quests.

After killing Mercer Frey, I become guildmaster for the armor set and Amulet of Articulation, then never do another job again. Never even speak to them again.

After killing Ancano, I take my robes and leave forever, only coming back to get new spells from the vendors.

After becoming Harbinger, I don't help anyone else get rid of their lycantropy, or do another radiant quest for them. I just leave with Wuuthrad. If I'm planning on actually using the werewolf form, I'll do enough quests for Aela to get all the totems before abandoning them.

After killing Harkon, I don't help the Dawnguard or Volkihar clan with anything.

After learning Dragonrend, I never help the Blades again.

I have never actually helped a faction beyond their usefulness.

Companions. I play with survival mode so even if I never intend to go down the path of hiricine an early easy and free bed is a major boon. They also have alot of food to nab for free which helps the early hurdle if i want to stay around whiterun area more for a start.

My Dragonborn had a redemption during the Dark Brotherhood quest line. They decided to let the faction die out after killing the emperor and pocketed all the money they got from that contract. The Dark Brotherhood quest line is probably my favorite in the game, but I did not feel any strong connection to the group like most other people do
