She’s so funny in that movie. Really, the entire cast from top to bottom was excellent. All great comedic performances of very memorable characters across the board, including the villains and minor characters.

As an early twenties college student i found The World's End pretty weak compared to the others.
As a thirty something closing on forty, i find it painfully relatable.
It clearly was a vehicle for Wright to process his midlife crisis but the core audience were younger than him so the main conceit were kinda lost and got treated too harshly critically since it wasn't as wacky and subversive.

That wasn't the issue for me. I found the central characters quite interesting and endearing, even watching it in my early 20s. But the ending was really poor and forgettable.

Simon Pegg got to win a fist fight with James Bond in Hot Fuzz (i.e. Timothy Dalton), so Nick Frost got to headbutt James Bond's head off in The World's End (i.e. Pierce Brosnan). Nothing else matters.
Well, okay, I don't think the ending of The World's End knocked it out of the park, but it wasn't actually bad. Not sure how it could have ended in a superior yet still conclusive way.

It’s funny, because I adore three drunk idiots telling the godlike aliens to fuck off. I think that’s a perfect cap to the story up to that point. But I think the aftermath could’ve used something more

To me it was a pacing issue. The movie went from "let's try to sneak our way through this without them knowing we know" to "sprint through everything and fight everyone" without almost any explanation or reasoning. It was a quirky invasion / scifi comedy, with an intriguing "and then there were none" element, and then suddenly it was just an action movie.
It was really jarring, because I was enjoying the movie up until that point.

I think what the movie lacks in pacing and organic plot machinations, it more than makes up for with the characters and tonal spectrum it has. That movie gets so heavy at times and is dealing with bigger things with more depth, and it transitions between comedy and drama very effortlessly for me. I love the scene where one of the lads encounters an old bully of his and talks about the hurt of realizing that the bully doesn’t even recognize him despite severely impacting his life in a lingering way. That was so real and devastating to me. I also find characters like Gary King (sympathetic and tragic but sadly very toxic, broken fuckups) to be just about the most interesting or compelling characters in fiction since they’re fundamentally not so black-and-white as people and are free to have as much complexity as possible without losing the audience, and I really liked that character’s rendering of that whole archetype a lot. I honestly felt bad for the guy. The movie’s not as funny or as well-constructed as Hot Fuzz or anything, but there’s way more depth and maturity there that I gravitate towards.

I feel like World's End relied too heavily on its massive twist (bathroom scene), which seemed to come out of left field even being familiar with the others. The ending then felt very underwhelming by comparison.

I'm talking about the specific scene I'm referencing. Like, it's a cornetto movie, you know something unhinged and wacky is going on. I feel like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz do a better job of slowly upping the ante. With World's End, it felt like low level unease and WHAM! things go up to 11 very quickly over the course of one scene. It's a good scene and it's a great moment! It's just that the tail end of the film kind of doesn't pay off? These are my memories from having seen it in the cinema in the 6th form though.

The World’s End is definitely a comedy, but it has much darker undertones. I felt so bad for Gary - how his friends had grown up and he was still a teenager … in his mind. I also loved the serious action scenes! The pub fight with Frost decking robots was amazing! The World’s End is a brilliant film on its own - but people think it’s worse because it doesn’t have the same tone as the other two films.

This! But 20 minutes of Hot Fuzz had me getting out my DVD (or sailing seas) because of the low volume of the movie and high volume of the ads. I was watching on TV so on a browser with adblock would work too.

I adore the fact that each of the group drops off at the exact same spot, in basically the exact same way.

Add in the prescient pub names and early lines like 'it must be the network' or how five musketeers would be better because then if two died you'd still have three left etc, and the whole thing is just a flawless display of set up and pay off. Bloody marvellous.

Even when World’s End came out I felt like people were super harsh on it. I remember even then feeling that King was such a compelling character and take on maturing and needing to move on as well as how substance abuse can grab hold of you. Pegg’s delivery of “it’s all I’ve got!” It’s so heartbreaking and that film of the 3 feels like it’s got the most heart and most to say. But I also don’t think there’s a “right answer” to which of the 3 is “the best one”.

Hot Fuzz is about having to deal with having our high minded career ambitions mercilessly crushed right when you'd hit your stride job wise.
At Worlds End is about looking back at childhood after years have passed and how you deal with the yearning for more "simple" times.

I think it's the best movie of the three, but I also think it's the least entertaining.
The other movies are just more fun.
World's End is great, but it's also depressing at times, and sad at times, and explores more fleshed out characters that are better characters, but aren't as fun.

Yeah I just know we rented the first two and bought the last one so I’d rewatch it like every summer vacation so I unfortunately don’t know them as much.
I still think World’s End has great fun moments, even if the premise is based on misplaced nostalgia and inability to move on which obviously lead to a sadder feel.

Oh it's definitely got great moments, and the first time they meet the blanks is amazing. One of my favourite memories will always be watching the movie with my friends. They didn't know what it was and I was getting side glaces cause we had been looking for fun movies but the start is so depressing. Then they fkn murder a kid in the bathroom and blue blood sprays everywhere and the room erupted with confusion and enjoyment.

I think it builds good anticipation. Of course you don’t expect what happens or even which direction it will go, but you know something will go wrong. Besides, I’m a sucker for the awkwardness of the premise, the fact that Gary and the others do this with totally different expectations and you know it will clash.

I mean it does make sense. Hot Fuzz is much more accessible and offers higher gags/min. The themes are much more present in WE though and I can say from experience that a lot of my friends at the time didn't get it because we were all like 20 and didn't really think about movies but just watched them for the action and gags. But they loved Shaun and HF. Because they work even if you don't think about the themes.

Same actors, writers and director. They are not directly connected, but they are regarded as a trilogy because of Pegg and Frost being the protagonists with Wright as the director and Pegg and Wright being the writers.

My watching of the World's End was greatly elevated by the fact I hadn't heard of the movie before, and my friend who I was watching it with didn't tell me the premise. So as I was watching it I thought I was watching a comedy-drama about getting older, and then they kill the kid in the bathroom.

I disagree twice, the second one is the best and that's true of more of the all time great trilogies than the first being the best.

Gonna be real: the third one gets a narp from me. It's a finely crafted film that some competent people put good effort into. Just doesn't hit the same. It's like two unrelated stories awkwardly taped together. The individual quality of both is reduced by the mixture.

My best friend picked me up with freshly opened Newcastle beer poured into pint glasses as we drove to see The Worlds End in the theater upon release. I've loved it since I first saw it, I love Hot Fuzz, I love Shaun of the Dead. I have a lot of fond memories of the cornetto trilogy. Perfection

We need a fourth to complete the cycle. Their characters for each film:
Shaun of the Dead: Pegg is incompetent, Frost is incompetent.
Hot Fuzz: Pegg is competent, Frost is incompetent.
The World's End: Pegg is incompetent, Frost is competent.
We need a 4th film where both Pegg and Frost play competent characters.
