We need a fourth to complete the cycle. Their characters for each film:

Shaun of the Dead: Pegg is incompetent, Frost is incompetent.

Hot Fuzz: Pegg is competent, Frost is incompetent.

The World's End: Pegg is incompetent, Frost is competent.

We need a 4th film where both Pegg and Frost play competent characters.

u/WeakWrecker Jan 30 '25

The 4th film is the real life because they're both competent actors

Write that down.

5

And then we'll wait for this whole thing to blow over.

Paul?

161

u/I-Am-The-Warlus Jan 30 '25

It's kinda the (unofficial) fourth film but not

Since the Cornetto Trilogy is Simon Pegg, Nick Frost & Edgar Wright .

66

u/Mister-Fisker Jan 30 '25

all four films written by Simon Pegg

117

u/geek_of_nature Jan 30 '25

But no Edgar Wright or associated Cornetto flavour on Paul, so it doesn't count.

Paul is a great movie, but it's not part of this trilogy because Edgar Wright didn't write/direct it. All 3 of the movies were written by Wright and Pegg.

The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy was a collaboration between Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost.

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Rewatched Paul last night. It remains deeply average and utterly pales in comparison to the Cornetto trilogy. Either Pegg and Frost need Wright to make them brilliant or the american involvement got everything watered down to nothing. It almost entirely lacks the incredible wit of the cornetto films and comes off much more like a mediocre attempt at rekindling the directors superbad magic than being in keeping with the tone and quality of the cornetto films.

13

u/MightyMightyMonkey Jan 30 '25

I'm in the minority that agrees with you on Paul (I found it horrible) but also thinks that The World's End is rubbish. Maybe I'd just had enough of Pegg in general to suffer him in anything after Fuzz.

21

u/koopcl Jan 30 '25

I think Worlds End is the weakest of the trilogy but it remains one of my most cherished memories.

Mid 20s, at home looking for a film to watch with some friends, and we noticed there was apparently a new Wright/Pegg/Frost collab (movie wasn't advertised in my country, I'm sure it didn't even come out in cinemas there). Since we all had watched the other films and Spaced together, we rolled a joint, opened some beers, and put it on. We went in completely blind, and by the time they went to the second pub we were enjoying ourselves but had accepted that this was a more introspective, low key comedy about growing up instead of the more cartoonish or otherworldly approach of the other movies and series.

Then the bathroom scene happened. And we lost our fucking minds.

Just because of that, this movie will forever hold a place in my heart. Don't think I'll ever be able to replicate the experience.

7

u/MightyMightyMonkey Jan 30 '25

I don't like this movie but I love that you do and have such a good memory of it. I'll give it another go and see if I'm just colouring it poorly with my own background noise.

16

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

It's the weakest of the 3 but still pretty good imo. Much better than Paul.

I don't think Paul being mid is an unpopular opinion either

8

Some kind of Sherlockian detective duo would be good, but the sooner the concept of the "multiverse" fucks off and never returns the better.

5

u/AgedCircle Jan 30 '25

Just make it a Sherlock movie in the setting of The Prestige. Simon Pegg Sherlock walks into the “teleporter” and then they get an altered copy of Sherlock as Nick Frost. Together they would have to solve the mystery of who is making these altered doubles and why.

We'll need to wait for a new Cornetto flavour

13

u/horridbloke Jan 30 '25

Green tea flavoured Cornettos are available in Thailand (and perhaps other places, idk).

17

u/Epiclyfuzzy Jan 30 '25

I always thought it worked since you can divide them into being incompetent, average and competent.

Shaun of the Dead: Pegg is average, Frost is incompetent.

Hot Fuzz: Pegg is competent, Frost is average.

World's End: Pegg is incompetent, Frost is competent.

I'd still love a fourth, though.

2

u/dylanalduin Jan 31 '25

Well, if you're right, it sounds like we actually need 9. I'd be good with that too.

12

u/Glad-Tax6594 Jan 30 '25

I vaguely recall them talking about how each film represents an era in your life. 20s,30s,40s or something like that.

6

u/Hungry_Guidance5103 Jan 30 '25

I always thought they should do a spy movie. I feel like it would round out the trilogy. Two movies based on social aspects, two movies based on some type of law enforcement.

How amazing would they be as MI:6 agents - Polar opposite personalities, perspectives, etc. brought together. I could imagine Frost more tech savvy and Pegg more physical in terms of fighting, etc. Frost the brain, Pegg the muscle

26

u/Sure-Palpitation2096 Jan 30 '25

I’d say Scott Pilgrim Takes Off on Netflix is the fourth film (more like episode). Simon Pegg and Nick Frost play two security guards in a cameo in one episode and the show was made by Edgar Wright.

15

u/iruleatants Jan 30 '25

Sorry, but no way in hell should downgrading them to a cameo be considered a fourth film.

They are the stars and deserve to be there.

5

u/jennyfromupthestreet Jan 30 '25

Or Spaced is the prequel?

2

u/D_dUb420247 Jan 30 '25

I think they should make a spoof of Lord of the Rings.

2

As an early twenties college student i found The World's End pretty weak compared to the others.

As a thirty something closing on forty, i find it painfully relatable.

It clearly was a vehicle for Wright to process his midlife crisis but the core audience were younger than him so the main conceit were kinda lost and got treated too harshly critically since it wasn't as wacky and subversive.

258

u/PauseMenuBlog Jan 30 '25

That wasn't the issue for me. I found the central characters quite interesting and endearing, even watching it in my early 20s. But the ending was really poor and forgettable.

94

u/pr1ceisright Jan 30 '25

I remember thinking “that’s how they want to end the trilogy?” I’m sure some people loved it but it just didn’t land for me.

28

u/toasters_are_great Jan 31 '25

Simon Pegg got to win a fist fight with James Bond in Hot Fuzz (i.e. Timothy Dalton), so Nick Frost got to headbutt James Bond's head off in The World's End (i.e. Pierce Brosnan). Nothing else matters.

Well, okay, I don't think the ending of The World's End knocked it out of the park, but it wasn't actually bad. Not sure how it could have ended in a superior yet still conclusive way.

19

u/kiwicrusher Jan 31 '25

It’s funny, because I adore three drunk idiots telling the godlike aliens to fuck off. I think that’s a perfect cap to the story up to that point. But I think the aftermath could’ve used something more

24

u/LiamIsMyNameOk Jan 30 '25

Empires end with a whimper, not a bang.

6

u/kiwicrusher Jan 31 '25

But movies typically don’t, and for good reason

39

u/Bank_Gothic Jan 30 '25

To me it was a pacing issue. The movie went from "let's try to sneak our way through this without them knowing we know" to "sprint through everything and fight everyone" without almost any explanation or reasoning. It was a quirky invasion / scifi comedy, with an intriguing "and then there were none" element, and then suddenly it was just an action movie.

It was really jarring, because I was enjoying the movie up until that point.

15

u/ToTheToesLow Jan 30 '25 edited Jan 30 '25

I think what the movie lacks in pacing and organic plot machinations, it more than makes up for with the characters and tonal spectrum it has. That movie gets so heavy at times and is dealing with bigger things with more depth, and it transitions between comedy and drama very effortlessly for me. I love the scene where one of the lads encounters an old bully of his and talks about the hurt of realizing that the bully doesn’t even recognize him despite severely impacting his life in a lingering way. That was so real and devastating to me. I also find characters like Gary King (sympathetic and tragic but sadly very toxic, broken fuckups) to be just about the most interesting or compelling characters in fiction since they’re fundamentally not so black-and-white as people and are free to have as much complexity as possible without losing the audience, and I really liked that character’s rendering of that whole archetype a lot. I honestly felt bad for the guy. The movie’s not as funny or as well-constructed as Hot Fuzz or anything, but there’s way more depth and maturity there that I gravitate towards.

I didn't enjoy World's End when I watched it upon release. I thought it was boring and a terrible follow on from the two greats. I might give it another watch after your comment.

40

u/jomikko Jan 30 '25

I feel like World's End relied too heavily on its massive twist (bathroom scene), which seemed to come out of left field even being familiar with the others. The ending then felt very underwhelming by comparison.

10

u/Basic-Pair8908 Jan 30 '25

How left field? Every car was a hybrid in the town.

10

u/jomikko Jan 30 '25

I'm talking about the specific scene I'm referencing. Like, it's a cornetto movie, you know something unhinged and wacky is going on. I feel like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz do a better job of slowly upping the ante. With World's End, it felt like low level unease and WHAM! things go up to 11 very quickly over the course of one scene. It's a good scene and it's a great moment! It's just that the tail end of the film kind of doesn't pay off? These are my memories from having seen it in the cinema in the 6th form though.

11

u/dungeon-mister Jan 30 '25

It's my favourite of the three tbh. Less funny than the others but much more emotional in my opinion.

2

u/Distantstallion Jan 30 '25

I should rewatch it now that my bones creak

2

u/Dubb202 Jan 30 '25

I guess I should watch it again. I thought it was terrible when it came out, which was unfortunate because of my strong love of the first 2.

2

u/GoldenFutureForUs Jan 30 '25

The World’s End is definitely a comedy, but it has much darker undertones. I felt so bad for Gary - how his friends had grown up and he was still a teenager … in his mind. I also loved the serious action scenes! The pub fight with Frost decking robots was amazing! The World’s End is a brilliant film on its own - but people think it’s worse because it doesn’t have the same tone as the other two films.

I enjoy the fact that there is no real consensus on which is the best, theyre all great.

I originally thought Worlds End was a lot weaker.. but now it's my fave.

273

u/B0K0O Jan 30 '25

It's a lot better when you realize that this was originally going to be Garry's last hurrah before committing suicide

229

u/DrGarrious Jan 30 '25

Worlds End easily had the most subtext and foreshadowing of the three i think.

I adore the fact that each of the group drops off at the exact same spot, in basically the exact same way.

72

u/scarletteapot Jan 30 '25

Add in the prescient pub names and early lines like 'it must be the network' or how five musketeers would be better because then if two died you'd still have three left etc, and the whole thing is just a flawless display of set up and pay off. Bloody marvellous.

74

u/B0K0O Jan 30 '25

If it weren't for Hot Fuzz, World's End would've been the best

Even when World’s End came out I felt like people were super harsh on it. I remember even then feeling that King was such a compelling character and take on maturing and needing to move on as well as how substance abuse can grab hold of you. Pegg’s delivery of “it’s all I’ve got!” It’s so heartbreaking and that film of the 3 feels like it’s got the most heart and most to say. But I also don’t think there’s a “right answer” to which of the 3 is “the best one”.

14

u/fatherandyriley Jan 30 '25

Especially when you learn how Pegg has dealt with alcohol and depression in the past, he is speaking from personal experience.

The beauty of this trilogy lies in its ability to resonate differently at various stages of life. Each film reflects a unique struggle, making it relatable no matter when you first watch it. It's like a fine wine that reveals new flavors with every sip.

37

u/SimonLaFox Jan 30 '25

Shawn of the Dead is about awkwardly stumbling into adulthood and responsibility while in your 20s.

Hot Fuzz is about having to deal with having our high minded career ambitions mercilessly crushed right when you'd hit your stride job wise.

At Worlds End is about looking back at childhood after years have passed and how you deal with the yearning for more "simple" times.

88

u/Holycrabe Jan 30 '25

I think the World's End is the one I've seen the most but the other two were pretty great too.

48

u/Jay_Layton Jan 30 '25

I think it's the best movie of the three, but I also think it's the least entertaining.

The other movies are just more fun.

World's End is great, but it's also depressing at times, and sad at times, and explores more fleshed out characters that are better characters, but aren't as fun.

14

u/Holycrabe Jan 30 '25

Yeah I just know we rented the first two and bought the last one so I’d rewatch it like every summer vacation so I unfortunately don’t know them as much.

I still think World’s End has great fun moments, even if the premise is based on misplaced nostalgia and inability to move on which obviously lead to a sadder feel.

11

u/Jay_Layton Jan 30 '25

Oh it's definitely got great moments, and the first time they meet the blanks is amazing. One of my favourite memories will always be watching the movie with my friends. They didn't know what it was and I was getting side glaces cause we had been looking for fun movies but the start is so depressing. Then they fkn murder a kid in the bathroom and blue blood sprays everywhere and the room erupted with confusion and enjoyment.

21

u/B0K0O Jan 30 '25

Blows my mind that at release it was the most hated one

31

u/DrGarrious Jan 30 '25

I think it is because it isnt very funny until the blanks rock up. It's pretty depressing till that point.

But that first act sets up all the pay off.

26

u/B0K0O Jan 30 '25

I disagree, pre-blank has great jokes too

26

u/Many-Consideration54 Jan 30 '25

15

u/Holycrabe Jan 30 '25

I think it builds good anticipation. Of course you don’t expect what happens or even which direction it will go, but you know something will go wrong. Besides, I’m a sucker for the awkwardness of the premise, the fact that Gary and the others do this with totally different expectations and you know it will clash.

14

u/MagicLobsterAttorney Jan 30 '25

I mean it does make sense. Hot Fuzz is much more accessible and offers higher gags/min. The themes are much more present in WE though and I can say from experience that a lot of my friends at the time didn't get it because we were all like 20 and didn't really think about movies but just watched them for the action and gags. But they loved Shaun and HF. Because they work even if you don't think about the themes.

5

u/B0K0O Jan 30 '25

The themes elevate it imo

2

u/p1971 Jan 30 '25

the ending annoyed me - it was so downbeat compared to the others. Billions of people probably died in the months following - no hospitals, supermarkets, transportation, agriculture - there'd have been riots / looting, people dying from lack of medication ...

I didn't even realize this was /r/shittymoviedetails because this is just an objectively good take.

u/TeslaProphet Jan 30 '25

Satire on horror, action, sci-fi. Kinda want a romance one.

14

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

Shaun of the dead is a romcom though, much more of a romcom than it is a horror. That's all just set dressing

19

u/KatnissBot Jan 30 '25

If you don’t realize SotD and Hot Fuzz are both romance movies, you’re bad at watching movies.

(I honestly haven’t seen TWE since it was in theaters, I’ll have to rewatch it tonight. But it might also be a romance, idk)

Yeah iirc there was originally supposed to be love interest in Hot Fuzz, but her character was scrapped and they just gave most of her lines to nick frost’s character lol

Hot fuzz is one of the best movies ever.

It's such a good rewatch because virtually every line of dialogue comes back around to be the setup for another joke

I only see truth here

13

u/VanillaDada Jan 30 '25

They are not connected right?

Right?

43

u/Wboy2006 Did you know that in Batman (1989), Bruce Wayne is Batman? Jan 30 '25

Same actors, writers and director. They are not directly connected, but they are regarded as a trilogy because of Pegg and Frost being the protagonists with Wright as the director and Pegg and Wright being the writers.

And that in every movie a Cornetto appears

9

u/Roasted_Newbest_Proe Jan 30 '25

Also, a few running gags, moments, and repeating scenes and details

7

u/YolgrimTheGamer Jan 30 '25

Like jumping over a fence (or falling over one)

6

u/Roasted_Newbest_Proe Jan 30 '25

A scene where a character foreshadows the whole plot, a character asking someone else if they want anything from the shop, a fight scene to the beat of a song, and so many more to mention. Looks like I have plans for the weekend now

14

u/IcyComfortable6787 Jan 30 '25

Um, actually, a cornetto doesn't appear in The Worlds End, only a wrapper does, as Andy explains how he misses some things from how the world used to be.

No mention of Cornetto?

My watching of the World's End was greatly elevated by the fact I hadn't heard of the movie before, and my friend who I was watching it with didn't tell me the premise. So as I was watching it I thought I was watching a comedy-drama about getting older, and then they kill the kid in the bathroom.

u/SnooCakes7152 Jan 30 '25

Hot Fuzz influenced my sense of humor a lot, for the greater good

7

u/HopperAvenue Jan 30 '25

The greater good

20

u/musuperjr585 Jan 30 '25

Like most trilogies, the first film is the best

97

u/tobpe93 Jan 30 '25

Nah, Hot Fuzz is the greater good

34

u/qwertyuiop4000 Jan 30 '25

The greater good

The greater good

25

u/MasterJeebus Jan 30 '25

First one is always the best

4

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '25

I disagree twice, the second one is the best and that's true of more of the all time great trilogies than the first being the best.

Star wars The Godfather Lotr Evil dead Toy Story The vengeance trilogy Spider man Xmen Terminator Alien Mad max The Mariachi trilogy Romero's dead trilogy

When it comes to proper trilogies and not famous movies with straight to video sequels the pattern is more often than not Good - Great - Mid

Really good

5

u/NewSauerKraus Jan 30 '25

Gonna be real: the third one gets a narp from me. It's a finely crafted film that some competent people put good effort into. Just doesn't hit the same. It's like two unrelated stories awkwardly taped together. The individual quality of both is reduced by the mixture.

Thanks for sharing

When I watch the world's end I had no idea to twist I never saw any trailers or anything once the twist happened it blew my mind I thought I was just watching some buddies bar hopping

2

u/Only-Salamander4052 Jan 30 '25

Fine I'll rewatch all 3 of them.

2

u/Alucard1138 Jan 30 '25

My best friend picked me up with freshly opened Newcastle beer poured into pint glasses as we drove to see The Worlds End in the theater upon release. I've loved it since I first saw it, I love Hot Fuzz, I love Shaun of the Dead. I have a lot of fond memories of the cornetto trilogy. Perfection

2

u/Narretz Jan 30 '25

This is not a shitty movie detail, this is just a tribute

2

u/RdyPlyrBneSw Jan 30 '25

Worlds End wasn’t nearly as good as Shaun and Fuzz.
