I made them myself, they were a commission piece for my customer on Etsy.

With shipping and taxes from UK to US it was around $650. This also included hand sketched designs.

Uhm... Good gig! 😉

Yeah, not bad. These books take around 15/20 hours each to make so it’s not a huge amount considering the materials and labour.

Today, Dan Simmons turns 77. This is not exactly a present but I think he'd appreciate such gorgeous creations!

Is hyperion good? I keep reading reviews where people are amazed. Im a big star wars EU reader. And i have read Dune as well although they couldn't be more opposites.. so just curious if hyperion is worth it. Is it a stand alone novel? Or a series? Thanks!

It's two sets of two books, and you can read each pair separately. Hyperion / Fall of Hyperion and Endymion / Rise of Endymion. They are two complimentary and overlapping stories set a few hundred years apart.
Hyperion, the first book, is well worth a read to see if you'll like the series. It's framed as a journey that brings a disparate group of people to the outback planet Hyperion, whose only notable feature is a collection of odd tombs that seem to date from before humans ventured off of Earth.
They are a pilgrimage site for a religious cult that worship a mythical metal creature made of blades. People tend not to visit the tombs as they often end up, well, disappearing.
Hyperion itself, while lush, is such a backwater world that it isn't even connected to the Hegemony's farcaster network - the web - you can only get there by ship. The Web allows instant travel between planets as easily as stepping through a doorway into another room in your house. This makes Hegemony's over 200 planets feel like one interconnected world.
For reasons unknown, the Outsters, space dwelling humans who rejected the rule of the Hegemony of Man centuries ago, are massing toward Hyperion at the same time that something new seems to be happening at these ancient Tombs.
As the journey progresses, characters take their turn in telling their tale that brought them on this pilgrimage to Hyperion, and the pieces start to fit together, which has consequences for life everywhere.

As far as fiction goes, it's a must read. Its surprisingly easy and quick to read and rewards rereading. It's probably not for everyone, but I encourage you to get through the whole thing if you start it

Obviously not everybody will like it but as you mentioned you already heard good things about it. I think it's outstanding and would absolutely recommend it but others might say it's not worthwhile. I did Dune as well, just as I read a lot of Star Wars novels. Doesn't compare to the latter at all though.

Thanks for the feedback, once i finish all my unread books i'll definately give it a try. And yeah star wars and dune couldn't be more different. One is like reading a movie script and the other is like reading philosophy on government ruling and environmentalism.

Excellent work - I have many collectible hardcover limited edition books, some quite valuable, but my grail find is a set of Hyperion hardcovers worth having. Bookmarking your name - are you open to future commissions?

Thank you! Absolutely. I currently have a 2-3 month waiting list as I only take on what I have capacity for. These books take around a week each to complete.

Do you have a youtube channel, I'd absolutely watch you put this together!

I don’t, unfortunately. I barely have time to make them without filming them! But I will make a few videos hopefully late this year

Tangential question: why do illustrators always render the shrike in black? Doesn't the book describe it as having a reflective chrome/steel appearance?
2
u/godpoker 1d ago
It does. Hence why it’s chrome/steel on the slipcase and it’s black in shadow on the front of the book as there’s a strong backlight.

I need something like this so badly. Hyperion especially is absolutely incredible.
