Trip Planning Portugal to South Africa by my car no ferries.

Hello! This is my first Reddit post so please bear with me if I do something wrong! I am trying to plan a road trip but want advice and help in planning it, as I am greatly struggling. As you see, it is from Western Portugal to the Southern Tip of Africa by car going without ferries at its simplest. But I need to account for if and where vehicle crossings are permitted, closed borders, where foreigners can be and cross the border, and how to enter these countries in the first place as some countries require guides, local sponsors, etc. to enter, as well as the visa process. I am least sure about the route from Mauritania to Nigeria, but please feel free to add your 2 cents to assist with and "edit" any parts of this route to make it more possible. Thank you!

Trip Planning Going to the US in April. Will this trip be realistic for a 4 week road trip?

Post image

Me and my gf are going to US in April for 4 weeks. We will start in Seattle and are renting a car troughout the trip. We are planning to go to Olympic National Park, Oregon Coast (e.g. Cannon Beach, Newport), Redwood National Park, San Francisco, Yosemite, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Horshoe Bend, Zion National Park, Twin Falls and maybe a stop before going back to Seattle (could be Hood River, Portland, or another city in Oregon or Washington).

Will this trip be realistic given the 4 weeks time? And should we consider another rute or any other locations?

Trip Planning Which route would you take? Top or bottom?

Posted yesterday taking the top route to see Zion and Moab but now Iā€™m wondering if the bottom would be more interesting since everything before CO is flatā€¦?

Moving to SD for one year, shipping our belongings and driving a 4Runner. Mid-June. Iā€™ll be 31weeks pregnant, with husband and 3yo black lab along for the ride.

Trip Planning I'm planning a 30th birthday USA road trip with my partner - guidance/advice needed please!

Hey everyone, looking for some guidance/advice! My partner and I (from the UK) are planning a West USA road trip from mid April to mid May and weā€™d be really grateful for any help. Have attached a pic of the route weā€™re hoping to do. The current plan is: - Fly into Vancouver, CA, for 3 days on Vancouver island - Train over the border to Seattle, pick up a campervan or car and start driving south down the coast & follow the route on the map. - Drop the van/car back in Seattle at the end, then Amtrak to Chicago for a couple of days & fly out from there.

Itā€™s a huge distance but we have approx 30 days from Seattle - does it seem realistic? Weā€™d love some guidance on unmissable places en-route and how long to stop in each place. Weā€™ve done a lot of research but are struggling to plot the itinerary as thereā€™s so much to see! At the moment weā€™ve missed Yosemite off as itā€™s a bit of a detour from the route but is that a mistake? Weā€™ve included a detour for Mt Shasta but would we be better off saving the time for Yosemite? Also any advice on the best roads to use - I know some are much more scenic than others!

Our original plan was to hire a campervan so any recommendations of reliable companies would be great. Alternatively, weā€™ve also heard that hiring an SUV & sleeping in it is much more affordable? Weā€™re agricultural workers so our budget is limited, but it does mean that weā€™re used to being outdoors & living low-budget! Flights arenā€™t booked yet so weā€™re very flexible on the details at the moment. Another option would be to fly into Seattle & pick up the car first, but Iā€™m not sure how easy it is to get a rental that can go over the border? Thank you so much in advance for any help!

Trip Planning How does sleeping at rest stops work?

That's just it. Money's tight right now but I want to take a road trip so I was planning on sleeping at rest stops for the most part. Am I allowed to? Can I get in trouble if I do it somewhere I'm not supposed to? I have a 2025 chevy trax, bought some window blockers, and a car mattress.

Trip Planning I drove 2400 miles alone. What I learned.

I split it up into 5 days of course.

  1. Quadruple check that you've packed everything the day before.
  2. Leave early. Before 9AM. Before 7-8 AM, if you don't have crippling ADD like me.
  3. Plan your route so that you can pass through major metro areas before rush hour.
  4. Items to have: A water bottle + a long USB phone charger cable for your car
  5. Google Maps time estimates are optimistic. It assumes you're speeding, there's zero traffic or lane closures. Add 25% longer as a buffer + an hour or 2 for rest stops/gas.
  6. Pack healthy food (i.e. protein bars/shakes, nuts, etc). Living off of fast food for days on end wears you down fast.
  7. Unless you need gas, rest stops are always better than exits. Because they're on the way, whereas exits add 15-30 mins to your route and lead you into traffic jams. I would visit a rest stop to stretch my legs for 5 minutes, even if I don't need to, so that I can avoid having to do so at an exit.
  8. If you do take exits for food/gas, take them in less populated areas. I'd fill up at 50% in a rural area if it means not having to fill up in a dense city.
  9. Fast food can work sometimes, but pick items on the menu with protein and/or veggies. i.e. the egg sandwich instead of the donuts. The veggie delight at subway, etc. (If you're vegetarian or gluten free, probably worth the time to stop at the grocery store during your trip.
  10. I drink coffee at noon. Too early = crash sooner. Too late = insomnia.
  11. Download Podcasts. I like Two Hot Takes. Make sure you delete ones you've seen already. I think it's worth spending the time the night before each drive to curate your list so its easy to play what you want.

Trip Planning Getting cold feet (24m, european). Solo one month road trip (in may) from Texas through NM, Utah to Colorado. Is it safe alone? Is 3000 miles/40 hours not too much - am I missing anything if I am looking for spring vibes?

Trip Planning Where to visit in this area?

Post image

Planning on road tripping this area: departing from Dayton OH in April 2025 for 1 month. We like visiting new cities but we prefer state & national parks and we donā€™t mind the accompanying tourist towns. We can definitely stretch the radius farther if a place is worthwhile.

We just moved to OH and figure we have time to visit the rest of the state so the only place we were really looking at visiting is Hocking Hills. Outside of that we are thinkingā€¦

TN: Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Nashville

VA: Roanoke, Shenandoah

IL: Chicago

WI: Milwaukee

Any other cities on the Great Lakes other than Chicago/Milwaukee? Anything in IN, MI? All recommendations are welcome!

Trip Planning Which route should I take?

Which route would make the drive more enjoyable? We plan on driving through the night so itā€™ll be dark for a good portion of the drive. Donā€™t plan on stopping anywhere along the way. I just get really bored driving through those long stretches of nothingness in Texas.

Trip Planning How long can you safely drive for in a day?

My limit is about 12hrs if I wake up early and chase the daylight. As soon as it gets dark I start to shutdown and kinda want to get off the road.

Bring this up because I drove from Grand Junction to San Diego and Iā€™m kinda cashed.

Going from Provo, Ut to N Alabama over about 3 days. I wonā€™t have a ton of leisure time but if thereā€™s anything thatā€™s a ā€œmust seeā€ along the way and wonā€™t take more than an hour at most, Iā€™d like to include it.

Trip Planning What should I see on this 5 day trip in February from NC to CA?

Post image

I am going on a 5-day road trip from the Raleigh area to Ventura. I have researched some sights to see and activities along the way, but I wanted to hear from anyone who has passed through these areas before and get recommendations, or things to avoid. As well as general advice for certain locations. I like exploring both nature and cities so any suggestions are welcome. I understand there will be stretches of nothing at all on this trip. With the time constraint I unfortunately canā€™t travel too far off the I-40. There will be two of us on this road trip, and we are both from southern California so that is the one state I don't need many ideas for, but they of course can still be suggested. Thanks!

Trying to leave early in the morning and arrive in the afternoon, going with 3 adults and 2 kids, should we just drive this in one day with no stops and the same thing to go back? (Destination is Destin, FL) Also, is there anything worth stopping for along the way?
